Review Sushi California - Vancouver

Nat S
Great sushi for a good price. The portions are quite big and the servers are all very friendly. We got salmon avocado rolls, a yam tempura roll, dynamite roll and a chopped scallop scone. The food arrived quite quickly and it was very delicious! The udon dishes are also very good.

Best bang for your buck - Whenever I visit Vancouver, I go there once to twice a week. The rolls are delicious and service is extremely fast! If you want to try multiple rolls or other items on the menu, I would suggest to bring a larger party. Very affordable prices compared to high-end sushi places and very good quality for what you pay for. They do not take reservations, it is first come first served and everyone in your party must be there to sit down. If you plan to go, make sure you come a bit earlier before peak hours (12:30 /6:30p/7p) as it will get crowded and the wait might be long.If you like sashimi, you must absolutely order the spicy salmon sashimi!

Generous and creative rolls, give them a try, and you will be definitely coming back. The venue itself is very spartan with a traditional open kitchen in view, no fancy decorations but the service is friendly and quick. They bring you a hot green tea with every meal, and this is how I like my donburi or rolls to be accompanied with☺☺. I opted for a BC COMBINATION which was a selection of 2 rolls and 2 pieces of tuna and salmon sushi. The portion is very generous, it is very satisfactory 😇😊 The price 13,95 was a DEAL, considering we are in Van downtown!!! 😊 The fish is definitely fresh, and rice is sticky and delicious 😋 I would definitely come back to try their Dynamite roll which was highly recommended, and tuna /salmon donburi seemed very inviting, as well.

California sushi looks great with large size meat at a high price. The restaurant looks very nicely decorated. I had high hopes for great sushi. The only problem was they don't know how to make good sushi. The rice was cold with no rice vinegar. If I wanted sushi like that I would have gone to safeway and got it. I have never had clod rice sushi. Like some one can in the morning or the day before and made the rice and forgot the rice vinegar. If this was in japan no one would go there they would be closed. Please send your staff to learn how to make sushi. They need alot of help. I wa very disappointed 😞

Ordered thru ubereats. The best one among my order was Takoyaki. I probably expected too much from this restaurant. I heard so many good things about this place. However, the Salmon sashimi was super rubbery. It was cut in a wrong way.. I could not chew and cut at once. I am a huge salmon lover, but.. this happened first time in my life. And Alaska roll had a weird flavor. And avocado in Alaska roll was not fresh at all. And even Tamago Nigiri was not freshly made. I could definitely taste that it was pre-made some time ago. Since the portions were great I would like to give another shot one day.. maybe I picked wrong dishes..

Good service and good food for a fair price. A place that has also options for everyone. Vegan, vegetarian and all eaters. Presentation of food is good and sizes are also good. You get free delicious hot tea to enjoy whole eating or waiting. Service was pretty fast. Overall good food and fair price.

This is a great place for basic, affordable sushi. Service wasn’t my favourite, but the food does come relatively fast. This location was playing Christmas songs and the vibe was casual yet intimate, if that makes sense. I’d say it’s a cozy place to catch up with friends or have a casual date. I ordered the dynamite combo, house roll and takoyaki. I’m a fan of combo’s and they happen to be very well priced here. I like how the rice is relatively thin for the rolls and focuses more on the content inside of the roll itself. I will say their ebi wasn’t good though, felt a bit tough. Besides that, no complaints! The house roll and takoyaki was good. Takoyaki had a sufficient amount of octopus, inside was soft, hot, and outside had a bite to it. They also have hot stone bowl plates, noodles, etc. Overall, if you’re craving sushi rolls and bento box type food, I’d definitely come here because the price is definitely worth what you get and you’ll leave there place content! It’s not the best sushi I’ve ever had, but for the the price, it’s pretty good and would have me coming back.

Definitely my favorite Sushi haunt. Quick service, pretty good sushi, and friendly staff. It's worth mentioning that the order accuracy isn't 100%; I've picked up the wrong order a few times, but these things do happen in a busy restaurant. However, they've always promptly fixed it; the only inconvenience is returning and waiting for the correct order.

Fabulous rolls, nice atmosphere, great service! I recommend you get your Sushi fix here.

I always order the grilled salmon tomato salad and it never fails me. Great ambiance, fast service and efficient staff...

Just wanted to shout out Sushi California for going above and beyond yesterday! I ordered delivery via door dash for 5 rolls and only receiving 1 due to a back end issues on door dash’s end. Gave Sushi Cali a shout and owner itself delivered, threw in extra rolls and apologized on behalf of door dash! Good stuff #boycottdoordash

Salmon sashimi: The salmon sashimi was delicious and satisfied my sashimi cravings. The sashimi was very fresh and the pieces were very large too!

Sushi California is a Korean operated Japanese restaurant chain in Vancouver. They now have 3 locations in the lower mainland. I went to their Mount Pleasant location to check it out. There are a lot of customers lining up, which is a phenomenon in itself judging by the poor food quality and lack of integrity. Sushi California is located on Broadway near Cambie Street, Vancouver.

Cheap and fresh sushi! Loved the salmon nigiri and the spicy tuna sashimi. We came for lunch and parking was easy, packed inside but we managed to get a table. Overall 4/5! Will definitely return :)

Excellent food. Great seafood soup. Best stirfry yaki soba. Very friendly, helpful and informative staff. Good atmosphere. Clean and pleasant interior. Definitely a favourite to visit again.

Love this place! Dishes are very generous and tasty. The Nabiyaki Udon comes piping hot and full of goodies. Order the tempura on the side to get it with the dipping sauce. The Chicken Yakisoba is huge and comes on a searing hot plate. Shareable and very generous with meat and ... well, all of the ingredients! The staff are very friendly and responsive. Unlike its predecessor, Sushi Garden, that always feels short staffed, this place I can always get service right away whether it’s a refill of hot tea, or taking my order promptly. The place always seems to be full, even on a Monday night.

Best specialty rolls in metro Vancouver! Consistently good and fair priced. Almost everything on their menu is tasty. My only complaint is the long wait times for a table. But that wont stop me from coming back here!

Came here for lunch with coworkers and ordered tuna aburi sushi and spicy scallop roll. The tuna aburi sushi was quite different from other Japanese restaurant since each piece had a jalapeño slice on top of it. Personally I didn’t find the taste unique or good, it was just ok. Even the scallop roll had a more sweet spicy sauce which I found overwhelmed on top of scallop roll so I couldn’t taste the scallop. The tuna aburi sushi was more spicy than other Japanese restaurants but the taste for both didn’t really stand out at all. The quality was average but the price was decent. Not my top choice of Japanese restaurants but I would come back for lunch since the price was reasonable for lunch.

Sushi time! Huge seared sushi that isn't just rice. The actual fish on it is big.  Nothing more need to be said.  Fresh seafood.  Really delicious toro, but can toro be bad?. Been eating at the two branches for years. Sashimis always taste tender and fresh, and sushi portion never disappoints. Have taken friends from different countries here for lunch and dinner and they enjoyed the experience as much as I did. Service is quick and efficient, and that's really what matters in a restaurant that's always jam-packed during lunch and dinner hours.

This is the second time ordering from Sushi California and the first time wasn't a fluke, this place is good. Luckily for me, I've gotten some Door Dash credits from referrals. (Click here for $10-$15 off your first order: . We ordered a BC roll, Alaska roll, aburi pizza, tuna and salmon sashimi, spicy tuna sashimi, and assorted nigiri.

Decent place to get affordable sushi. They serve a huge selection of rolls - all the classics and many creative rolls. <br/><br/>The portions are larger than average. And, the quality of the sushi is pretty solid.<br/><br/>This place definitely satisfies a sushi craving without breaking your wallet!

Great food & selection.<br/><br/>So much choice for sushi & other great dishes. The karaage chicken came out piping hot & was so delicious!<br/>Pan fried pork gyoza were crunchy & flavourful. We tried 3 sushi rolls- chicken katsu, salmon king & crunch roll.<br/><br/>Food came out quick even though the place was packed for dinner service.<br/><br/>My recommendation- sushi, duh!<br/>

Sushi California is one of my favourite Japanese Restaurant in the Great Vancouver Area. There are two locations as I know. One is in the City of Coquitlan and another one in Downtown. I’ve been both of them before. Mostly, I’ve been to the one on west broadway because it’s nearby my apartment. We always went to the Broadway location right before lunch and dinner time. This location was always busy. If we went there late, we had to wait for a half hour or one hour to get into the restaurant. Inside the restaurant was also crowded. People were all like this place. The servers here were nice, friendly and helpful. They took an order fast even through here was super busy. The food always came fast. The sushi rolls here were fresh with large portions. They were all very tasty. The prices of the food were so cheap. I strongly recommend people to try Sushi California.

My first comment - Great food at an affordable price!! :)<br/><br/>I tried the food here before. Now I am coming back for a takeout. I ordered for myself and coworkers. <br/><br/>We ordered tempura udon, chicken teriyaki roll, dynamite roll, miso soup, chicken karaage and crunch house roll. All of them were good. The portion was big at a reasonable price. The flavour was very tasty that the dressing or sauce on some of the special rolls was about right. I had a super salty sushi somewhere else due to the sauce that was heavy loaded. <br/><br/>We ordered the food by phone. The food was ready for pickup in the next 15 mins. It was on time. The restaurant was very efficient and fast. <br/><br/>When I stepped into the restaurant around 1:30pm, it was crowded. Servers were busy running around and serving customers. I wouldn't be able to comment on their customer service as I did not eat at the restaurant. But I could see it was a fast pace environment even though it was a Japanese restaurant. They would serve customers quickly and the turn around time was quick. Once customers have paid, they would clean the tables right away and serve the next customers. <br/><br/>I wouldn't mind to come back here and try other dishes next time. <br/>

• really busy location! Street parking available, more along the side streets. Don't park at No Frills because they will tow your car if you are not a customer<br/>• do not park along W. Broadway after 3pm, rush hour<br/>• SC doesn't take reservations so go early, tell the hostess your name/# of people in your group, wait 15-30 mins until seated<br/>• Fast service, takes a while to get server's attention for tea refill<br/>• as always their sushi are good and affordable. Its different & yummy! <br/>• Crunch calamari roll, Mango, Rainbow, Dragon, House crunch rolls are my favourite and I order them over and over again as they're the best and you can't get them anywhere else.<br/>• anyways I'll be back as I've been numerous times

Great food and service. I found my experience at this location way better than the Coquitlam location. They don't have a parking lot so you'll have to find parking on the streets.

Food here is generally quite good ... Dons/Bibimbaps are delicious; sushi and rolls are gigantic and satisfying; grilled fish jaw is definitely for fish lovers! <br/><br/>The new decor is something quite confusing to me. I understand the trend for restaurants and it's dining environments to be current and designed; however, the night-club-like music, dark wood walls, and dim incandescent lights are just so contrary to the light and fresh food prepared and served here. Dark, noisy, and loud beats are not good paring to Japanese food in my opinion.<br/><br/>The service here is something very disappointing. The front staff/waiters/waitresses are clumsy and distracted and 'too-busy-to-care.' No host/hostess means that some people stand at the door do not get greeted or acknowledged -- furthermore some cut in the queue ahead of the ones in the waiting list -- utter chaos. No reservation will be taken, either. <br/><br/>If not the food was delicious enough for me to return, I'd avoid this place altogether.

Everything is ok, sashimi is fresh, tried the crunchy rolls, I personally not a tempura fan so I didn't enjoy all those deep fried flakes, but my friend enjoyed very much! <br/>

Good option for quick sushi or Japanese food fix. I like coming here once in a while. The decor got updated so the interior has a completely different feel now -- wood on all the walls and quilted leather seat backings. Not what you'd expect at a sushi place. 😊

Great value from portion size and good quality food! Had the chicken katsu with house salad, which is listed as an appie / salad but could've been a whole meal for $7.50. Chicken was crunchy and flavourful, very moist. Didn't love the dipping sauce though, which tasted a bit like Worcestershire? Oshitashi spinach ponzu salad was also good and well portioned for $3.50. Definitely coming back if I can grab a seat!

Sushi California is my bae.  I loved this place so much for it's quantity and affordability.  Stopping by on a Thursday night, we were greeted by their staff and promptly seated at one of the few tables left.  We all ordered the sushi and sashimi combo, and ordered a roll each.  I ordered the smoked salmon sushi roll which was good, but not amazing.  We all sampled the Alaskan Roll which had an amazing sauce.  The slices of sashimi were great (at least for this poor Edmontonian who lacks good sashimi in his city) and it's hard to find a better place for the bang for your buck.<br/><br/>Service was average.  I found nothing great about it, but there was nothing horrible either.  They did their job.  I liked the environment of this place too.  All in all, recommended.

Cheap, decent, and filling. This place satisfies a quick sushi craving without breaking your wallet. I don't eat sashimi so I can't comment. In terms of rolls, I really like the Crunch Munch Roll.
DontTellMeWhatToDo
Great value for the quality of food. Everything was very fresh! Their pressed sushi was decent for $7 and the sashimi was awesome. It has bumped our previous go-to sushi take out place.

A real slap in the face. I stopped dining in at Sushi California when their staff training has gone down hills. I have had many incidents with this place but never with their food but always with their staff. It would normally be about wrong order, wrong bill, half an hour wait for bills, they forgot to take our name and seat us etc. It has gotten so terrible that I have started to do take outs only. Their food quality is fantastic and pricing was the best part about this restaurant. But SERIOUSLY...!<br/><br/>you have the worst staff ever! I called recently to place an order, been waiting for them to finish their renovation for quite some time. I placed an order over the phone and the server takes the order and goes absolutely silently for a minute and goes<br/>"I didn't get any of that, can you repeat", I ended up repeating my order 3 times and the bill came up to 50 dollars! My bill only ever comes up to 20 bucks. <br/><br/>How is it that after 3 times of repeating my self, the server has managed to place a complete different order on every single one of them? I was on the phone with them for good 5 minutes! and the attitude these girls were giving me was over the moon! <br/><br/>Oh plus their price went up substantially. Everything went up by minimum dollar to 5 bucks. my actual order came up to 39 dollars and I wasn't ganna pay that. Ended up going to a sushi restaurant in Kits and paid 43 bucks for the same order and two pints of beer. <br/><br/>Absolutely disappointed! after 5 years of enjoying delicious food from this location I am not completely boycotting this place until they take adequate measurement to fix their sassy servers with poor customer service!

Very very Terrible service. A piece plastic came out from our energy roll and the worst part was the waitress didn't even apologize. Disappointed.

I've been to sushi california many times, as the prices are fair and there are a variety of options on the menu. My personal favorites are the seafood udon salad, ishi yaki, tempura udon, b.c. roll, and spicy sashimi. <br/><br/>We came in for dinner around 6:30pm and had to wait around 20 minutes for a table. This was not surprising, as sushi california is ALWAYS really busy. We ordered the seafood udon salad, b.c. roll, and cream cheese mango roll. I absolutely LOVED the seafood udon salad. The salad dressing went very well with the udon and the crispy bits on top added texture, as well as flavor (reminded me of chips). There was arctic surf clams (the red fin looking thing), mussel, scallops (a lot!), shrimp, and egg. <br/>Since the restaurant was very busy, it was also very loud. If you're looking to catch up with a friend or to have a long chat, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.<br/>The service was good. The servers were nice and very efficient.<br/><br/>Sushi cali is one of my favorite sushi restaurants and without a doubt, I would return again, again and again!

I’ve been coming to Sushi California since they first opened when I was in university. It’s one of my favourite places for a quick bite of no frills Japanese food, and I have often come here from my office Downtown just to pick up lunch!. What I ate: Tuna Battera(Chopped spicy tuna, Jalapeno, Garlic mayo) ($5.95) and Box Sushi (Smoked Salmon, cooked shrimp, scallop, avocado and sliced lemon) ($4.95)

I is very satisfied. <br/>Rolls are cheap and delicious. <br/>Sashimi slices are HUGE. <br/>Much all round bang for the buck yum yum in the tum tum Sushi place.

Good sushi at affordable prices. <br/><br/>You can't expect the best sushi in the city, but at this price point you get great value for money. The fish is fresh and the noodles and rolls filling. <br/><br/>My friend and I got:<br/>- beef yakisoba <br/>- agadashi tofu<br/>- salmon and tuna sashimi <br/>- double spicy tuna roll<br/>- scallop tempura roll <br/>- ebi sunomono <br/><br/>My eyes were bigger than my stomach, but I couldn't help myself. I live in New Zealand and decent sushi costs a fortune. This entire meal cost me $37. That is a bargain! <br/><br/>Best dish:<br/>- The spicy tuna roll - the roll was freshly made and the nori still had a bit if a chew. The tuna was spiced well but it didn't overpower the flavour of the fish. It was covered in a crunchy tempura crumb that added a nice richness to the dish. <br/><br/>Worst dish <br/>- The ebi sunomono - the dish lacked the balance of sweet and sour/vinegar that a great sunomono delivers. The noodles were also overcooked and therefore lost their texture. I didn't finish it as I wanted to save my calories for the good stuff. <br/><br/>The remaining dishes were as you would expect them to be. <br/><br/>Have I had better? Yes, but this place is what it is and it's a solid meal. <br/><br/>I liked it (enough but not a lot) = 3 stars. <br/><br/>

went here for take out, and i used to like the branch in lougheed a lot when i was studying in a nearby area, because the service was fast, and wasn't exposed much to sushi too much and i thought it was good. Now that I've tried quite a few bit of sushi places, going back sushi california is another real test, I ordered a few things that my friends always ordered, spicy sashimi, negitoro roll, and i can't remember the other two rolls are, however the sushi taste decent i must say, although the price have increased over the past few years, it's still affordable, the place is still packed in this new location as well. The taste, i find it definitely okay, nothing that I'll come back repetitively, as there are other places that serves these kind of sushi quality at similar price.
The Sushi Connoisseur
You know how it is with sushi establishments: If the Salmon and California rolls aren't up to par, do not bother going. I ordered just that and I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't impressed either. Service was nice, but it felt like the niceness was being forced out. Before I received my order, I noticed that even close to closing, the establishment was packed, so I had high hopes. The sushi itself was adequate. Good price, good flavor, nice texture, but it felt basic. Must be just a small nitpick on my end.
Viraj Abeysekera
Without a doubt one of my favourite sushi spots! They have all the standard fare you'd expect from a sushi restaurant plus some other really interesting and unique rolls of their own. Service is always fast and friendly. The ambiance and overall decor of the place is certainly chic making you feel almost as if you're in a much higher-end restaurant. A very refreshing change from most dine-in/take-out sushi joints. The prices are a bit steep, but then again quality always comes at a price.

I was quite surprised with the decency of the food from here. Noticing the long lineups, but looking in to see only mediocre food, I never ventured into the restaurant. I finally got to try it when we got takeout to celebrate the completion of a project. I have got to say that the creativity with some of their rolls really hit the spot.

BEST sushi is Van. Fresh and inexpensive sashimi, and fast service! Food is always hot. Tofu and the stir frys are always delicious! Make sure to come early as they are always busy!

This is definitely one of my favorite places to gray some sushi. Located just off the Broadway/City Hall Station - this place is always full when I come by. The tuna and salmon sashimi melt in your mouth - must try. Recently tried the Beef Yakisoba and it came out on a sizzling plate - large size. I highly recommend this place!

When I think of budget-friendly places to get my sushi cravings fulfilled, I think of Sushi California or Sushi Garden. Since I live closer to Sushi California in Coquitlam, it’s usually my go-to place.  Any time of the day, the restaurant is always filled with people waiting for a table.
Jill
For thick sliced sashimi lovers. Just look at that fat juicy salmon. Great value for money. Creative jalapeno sushi that was spicy enough to taste but not overbearing. First time trying uni nigiri and here's what I think it tastes like: creamy, thick texture with a slight seafood taste? It's not full of flavour bursting in your mouth (less taste than your typical fish sashimi) but I'm glad to tell people I've tasted the sea urchin now.
Rain
My friend and I had dinner here yesterday and I had a great experience. The lineup was very long but we got seated fairly quickly. I got the chicken soboro and crunch cali roll. They were both fresh and very delicious!! I highly recommend the chicken soboro. The service was great. Servers were pleasant even if it was crazy busy. Great food for a great price!

After visiting Sushi California (their Broadway location) in 2014, I vowed never to return. But Sushi California Coquitlam made me reconsider ~ that Kimchi Yaki rice was just too darn good!! I pass by SC en route to UBC, so I decided to go there for dinner on my way home from school the other day!<br/><br/>  Let me tell ya, the place was packed!! No surprise here, us Vancouverites lovee our cheap sushi. If you avoid the rolls (lesson learned) everything else at SC is pretty decent! Especially their salmon sashimi!
Steven
Did takeout from here for a NYE's party. I've never seen sushi not eaten at a large party, most people had one piece of sushi and then knew better not to  eat more. It mostly ended up in our green bin.  Eat here at your own peril.

I eat a lot of sushi. ~5x a week.<br/>If you are looking for pretty good sushi with large portions and good prices, this is the place. The pricing is very reasonable, and the rolls are large. <br/><br/>The spicy tuna sashimi portion is massive! I usually just get the 1/2 order now.<br/><br/>They have a deep fried California roll called 'The Crunch Cali Roll' which is clearly unhealthy but YUM YUM YUM. <br/><br/>Few things, if you are ordering for pickup they say '15-20 minutes' but it is rarely ready on time, especially if its a large order. I order 30 mins in advance usually so I am not sitting there waiting. <br/>The service when you dine in is very 'meh', but what are you expecting at a cheap sushi place?
Aloe
Have never dined in so my review is based on the dozen of take-outs. I usually go in, order, go to the nearby No Frills for grocery, and go back to pick up the order. All the servers i have encountered are friendly and efficient. Especially like their Alaska roll that is filled with avocado and has a nice sauce. Also like crunch munch roll that has crispy potato threads on top.
Pauline Vancouver
We eat here every other week when we need a huge dose of raw protein. Their portions are so big we typically don't finish our order of salmon sashimi. The fish is good, the huge turn over and volume of business means nothing is sitting there for very long. Price is right. All-in-all, much better than some other sushi restaurants in Yaletown which will remain unamed.
Feelingfamished
I've gotten take out here a couple times and the food is always quite good! Portions are large and tastes are similar to what you would find at any korean-run sushi place. Love the spicy salmon sashimi plus they also have rolls on the menu that aren't seen at other places like the hot n' roll (topped with a little piece of jalapeño) and the double spicy tuna roll (the more spicy the better!) In addition they have all the expected ones such as alaska roll and smoked salmon cream cheese roll.

This place is great! I will definitely be coming back. Pretty certain they recently renovated because the place looked super new. I was surprised at how spacious and bright the place is (considering their blinds were all down). The servers were really nice.

In a land of sushi restaurants, rating a sushi restaurant with a 4.0 must mean something. And it does! Having been here a couple of times and finding it solid, I think it deserves some good words from a happy camper. <br/><br/>Food/Drink: They offer the quintessential sushi restaurant food: rolls, hand cones, udons, don buris and so on. They have an extensive list for speciality rolls at good prices. So if you're feeling more adventurous than your cali roll, check this place out. Their Spicy Agedeshi Tofu was really good. For 4.50, it was a very generous serving and perfectly fried too. Delicious! The Negitoro Roll is solid. The Spicy Tuna order is GIGANTIC. We were 2 girls and we still had leftovers to pack up.  Needless to say, if you're coming from work or school and want fast and good sushi, here's one to try!<br/><br/>Ambience: Really spacious for a sushi place (Ehem, Samurai Sushi). Really clean and provides a big space for both small groups and bigger groups. <br/><br/>Service: Stellar service, speed wise. We got in at about 1pm the other day and there was a line for the seating. Someone took our name and sat us within 10 minutes. When we ordered, the food came out within 10-15 minutes as well. Really quick and efficient. Our tea was topped off regularly. <br/><br/>Transport: You take the Canada Line to Broadway-Hall Station and you walk a block or two up! It's hard to miss; it's quite a huge space.

The food here was INCREDIBLE! I will definitely return. I had the spicy odon noodles and some salmon nigiri. Everything was delicious and the prices are great, service is fast and friendly!

If you are craving for sushi but have little time or don't want to spend too much money - this is the place for you. The food is quick and the portion is generous. Wide array of selection and delicious tasting food. It won't taste high end like Miku or Kingyo but it is not bad for what you get.

I am in love with the sushi joint. I just newly discovered it this past month and it has quickly become favourite. With their special rolls priced under $5 (most of them at $3.50), how can you possibly go wrong. Large portion sizes, the freshest seafood to go around and definite speedy service! Welcoming/enthusiastic staff members (a little on the younger side), definitely an upbeat environment always playing the top 40s on their sound systems. This Korean owned sushi joint is a go to place for the perfect foodie and savvy spender. <br/><br/>Recommended sushi: 'Salmon Mountain Roll' & 'Crispy Avo Roll'

New favourite sushi restaurant. Great experience! Very busy but staff are friendly and very attentive. We chose to sit at the bar which was great because we saw all of the action and got to talk to the chefs (and got a treat on the house which was awesome). The menu has a wide selection and the orders are served very quickly. My tea was never empty and the food was delicious. Highly recommend!

I would say I like it here. The food is cheap and delicious. It's always busy and has a good atmosphere. The setting is nice and bright as well. I've been here about 4x and plan to come back. Thanks Sushi California! - T

SLOW!. I've been here many many time over that last couple years. Usually everything is decent, food and service. But the last couple times it has gone down hill. It's a Wednesday night, 1 .5 hours to get sashimi and 3 rolls. They are alway busy, but I noticed every table getting irritated by the slow service. Recent visits seems to be getting slower and slower. Really need to improve on this. Use to come here a lot, Don't think I'll be coming back for a while now till things improve.

I really like this sushi place, they serve very large rolls which I can always get on board with. Their specialty rolls are really delicious, I’ve only tried a few but I found that the ones that I have had here always taste pretty fresh. I recommend it! There’s lots of seating, and it’s very nice and bright in there… very modern!

You get what you pay for!. So far I've been here 5 times, and this place is always full! Although it is true that the waitresses are often rushed, and not very attentive, I can overlook that fact because of their low prices. Definitely not authentic sushi, but yummy enough to keep my friends and I happy! <br/><br/>Don't expect stellar service (it is a fast-food style restaurant), but do expect to be full on $10! :)

If You Don't Like Something You've Ordered, Don't Expect it to be Removed From Your Bill. I have eaten here before mainly for take out as usually the restaurant is SO under staffed so the wait for a table, let alone any service once you HAVE a table, is brutally painful. I feel quite badly for the servers, they always looks so exhausted. <br/><br/>However, my most recent experience has put me off this restaurant completely. I have always ordered their salmon nigiri and it has always been fine. not top quality but fine for the cheap price. This time the nigiri was very chewy, like rubber, and it tasted awful. I informed the waitress politely, stipulating that I have eaten here before and that I have never had any real issues with the food before but that this time the salmon tasted poorly and that I wasn't going to eat it. If ever this has happened to me in any other restaurant they have been kind enough to remove the item from my bill. In Sushi California, however, the young waitress spoke with the manager, who then passed on to her that the salmon is the 'same as always and that there is nothing wrong with it'. I was told that the item would NOT be refunded from my bill. <br/><br/>I am astounded by such a poor response from a business as this. I was so stunned by this reply from the restaurant that I simply nodded my head, and said, "Ok, fine", when really it was not. The food tasted terrible which means it should be removed from my bill, simple as that. Common sense. <br/><br/>I will not be coming back again, Sushi California. You need to work on your customer service.

Interesting sushi creations. The food menu, portion and size are comparable to Sushi Garden, even the lineups! Ordered the california combo, salmon sashimi and seafood salad. The size of the salmon and tuna were enormous. The seafood salad was very refreshing, included some cold vermecelli, lettuce, prawns, squid. The fish was quite fresh and tasty. I would definitely come back and try their creative sushi rolls.

Sushi California. Well I'm not the biggest sushi person , but I've had enough Sushi around Vancouver and this was the worst , first off the ordering system is totally wierd I was given a menu to order take out no one came back , then I saw people heading to the back to place an order and I caught on. <br/>The dynamite roll was totally weird tasting texture of rice was peculiar can't remember the other roll I ordered but neither of the two I had were good in my opinion, I had walked by this place a few times and saw how busy they were . well I won't be back and I don't recommend it to anyone , Sushiyama or Hime Sushi are much better and much higher quality both service and food . <br/>Thumbs Down

As always the food was great and the girls were working hard to please! But tonight there was this chubby guy in a striped sweater that was glaring and yelling at the servers right on the floor! He is not the man I would work for nor was he creating a great dinning experience for the full restaurant! This fella needs to grow up and treat his staff well, instead of creating a hell kitchen that will rot the fish!<br/>Jeffrey

Bland Food, Bad Service. Went here during the weekend and despite being busy, we were seated promptly and had our orders taken. However, I was disappointed when the food arrived. The sushi rolls were poorly put together and there was something off about the sushi rice.. it was bland and mushy. Strangely, we had both ordered a variety of food but one of our orders came all at once and the other arrived 15 minutes later. After the long wait, we asked the waitress if they had forgotten our ebi sunomono, which should have been the first item out. She left to check and came back to serve other tables without so much as a word. The sunomono came when we asked for the bill. No explanation.

Huge portions!. This place is one of my favourite sushi joints in Vancouver. The prices are super cheap and reasonable considering the portion size. Their salmon sashimi is humongous and puts other places to shame. Only had a problem once with service where they served me a bottle of beer with the lid still on and expected me to take it off. I'm pretty sure that violates some liquor law - and honestly, I'm a woman - I'm not taking a beer cap off with my bare hand! But I still keep coming back despite that hiccup.

The Alaska roll and spicy sashimi are the best. The rolls are very unique and well priced. The unagi sushi is delicious and their sashimi is always fresh. The service isn't always the greatest when they are busy but servers are generally friendly. You can expect extraordinary service when you are paying $3-$4 a roll and $8-10 for large portions of sashimi. People who complain about the service just aren't being reasonable.

Best Sashimi. I love their Sashimi delax! Super fresh, super tasty, enough for 2 hungry people and not expensive at all!!!

DON'T GO THERE - terrible experience with takeout order. We ordered by phone two orders of wild sockeye rolls and a beef teriyaki for takeout. When my husband got there to pick up, he was reassured by the waitress that the order was correct. Later when he got home, the rolls were actually regular farm salmon, not sockeye but we were charged for it obviously. My husband called to have them redo the order and made the effort to go there again. This time he came home with sockeye salmon rolls full of mayonnaise. We ordered a regular type of rolls that you can find in any Japanese restaurants, and we were really upset by the repeated mistake. My husband called them again to complain, and the waitress he spoke to tried making up excuses, saying it was a specialty roll and that the chef might make it differently. She asked my husband to reorder and come pick up again. We had enough of the crappy service and demanded to refund our entire order. We had ordered from them a few times before because they are relatively close to our home. After this experience, never again will we go there or order from them again.

The only reason the sushi portions are large is because they give you more RICE. Otherwise the portions are like any other place. Taste wise the food is bland (probably because the large amount of rice watering down the flavour). The service is usually rushed and rude.
Vivian
I love the sushi here. The portions and taste is great but service is sketchy at best.

Unbelievable! Been waiting for half hr for my food so asked the guy who toke my order for the status. He came back saying that he didn't save it (they take orders with ipad). WTF! This is my first time ever experiencing something like this! It's not missing a dish but the whole list of my orders. Crazy! I was so pissed and left the place. Went to Sushiyama after and guess what? Foods came in waitin 10 minutes and delicious . I think this place sucks big time.

I called in an order for pick up at 6:20pm. Was told it would be ready in about 20 minutes. Arrived at 6:40pm to pay and was told by the wait staff that my order was just being finished. 20 minutes pass and I am still waiting. So I ask them to check on my order status and am given answers like "sorry it will just take a bit longer". In the end, i did not receive my order until 7:20pm. Extremely dissatisfied with the service of this restaurant.

Never order take out!!!. Can you imagine waiting for an extra hour for your orders despite you have ordered it 2 hours in advance?? I have experienced this twice with this restaurant. During that 1 hour I was waiting, I was seeing other customers shaking their head, constantly standing up checking for the take out orders...apparently, I wasn't the only one waiting super LONG for the orders. The most ironic thing is that you think you are doing them a favor to prepare for your food to order in advance; however, they make you wait for an extra hour? What did they do when they realize you have been waiting that long? They gave you two small bowls of miso soup for a four people meal!!!! How generous! Never again to order take out from this restaurant if you are hungry!

This place is great, don't let anyone tell you different. I work close to Sushi California and go there at least once a week. This place is the bomb. The rice they use for their sushi is great, never mushy or overcooked, tasty as hell rolls, miso chicken salad is always just goddamn amazing. I've introduced multiple people to this place and they've all agreed that this is some of the best sushi around. I get takeout so I don't know about the service, but I don't know what these chumps are complaining about, they must have some awfully high standards to be so let down by (at worst) totally decent sushi.

Quantity over quality. Sushi are huge, but aren't flavourful. Quite bland, actually. Service was so-so.
Amarat
You get what you pay for. The food isn't the best but the pricing is fair. The service is quick and fuss-free.
Jackie
Terrible service, won't be returning. The portions here are decent and I've had ok experiences in the past. I recently ordered take out and after being told my food would be available in 20 min, when I arrived 1/2 hour later they had lost the order - no explanation, no apology. They even accused me of phoning the wrong restaurant (which I obviously didn't, when I hit redial on my phone). Won't be returning. Banzai sushi or Samurai on Cambie are much more reliable for similar quality and price.
Sav
The food and service at sushi California is horrible. It took almost an hour for the food to arrive. The portions were massive but very low quality. The rolls were soggy and clumsily put together. They would fall apart when picked up. Very young and disorganized staff. No manager working at the time.
Jvel
Awful quality - won't be returning. I just ordered a yellow town roll, a spicy tuna tempura roll, and a salmon role as take out for lunch, and I am so disappointed I chucked it in the garbage. The yellow town roll was basically a cali roll with coleslaw on top of it - no signs of crab or smoked salmon.. the spicy tuna tempura roll had a 1.5" bone in it that I had to dislodge from my throat, and the salmon roll was slimy, gummy and smelled fishy.. so NOT up to par. I am never going back there!

Meh. I know this sushi restaurant is ALL ABOUT THE COMFORT FOOD STYLE SUSHI. However,I ordered kimchi pork fried rice and agadashi tufo. PAYING FOR $8 for rice with barely seeing the pork in the dish was terrible and ripped off. The agadashi tufo was not fresh and the sauce was the only warm part. Also, I think the cook did know how to make a sunny side up egg because it was fully cooked LOL! (sorry, I found that the worst part because any person who does not cook can cook a sunny side up egg) Also, the waitresses who have been working their for a while need to improve their service because it takes forever to take our order and also they are unfriendly compare to the newly trained servers. Also, I found it disgusting that they would lay the food scrap cart or cart with diry dishes near by the sushi counter, where the sushi were all prepared. It is very unhygenic. I WILL NOT GO BACK HERE AGAIN. It has a nice interior though. Anyways, good luck Sushi California. I hope it will improve it's quality of the food, service, and the hygine.

Food was average. Particular.... Food was average. Sushi rolls had way too much rice on them. <br/>What made me dislike this particular restaurant was the fact that they did not handle a street power outage well. We asked for the bill, which the had to be manually calculate due to the outage, that was great. However, when we wanted to pay using a card, they had no alternative for us other than to pay cash. The manager insisted to write our credit card information and sign it to "authorize" the payment on a STICKY NOTE so they can properly process our payment afterwards. Cannot even grasp my mind about how anyone will think that is even a safe and secure method to accept payment... <br/>I give it to them to think of an alternative on the spot but as a business, there should be a "plan b" if "plan a" cannot work. Disappointed.

Great deal for good sushi. This place is our staple place for workday lunch and get-togethers. Similar to sushi garden, similar price to Samurai but a much nicer environment. The rolls are creative and tasty, appetizers like sunomono and ponzu gomae are not sloppy at all, but my favorite are the chirashi and the deluxe chiraishi with so many big pieces of sashimi. I do find the pieces big (but that's a good thing for me), so I just do takeout and then cut the pieces a little smaller at home ...
Lulu_banane
Budget sushi at best. Rolls were sloppily made, way too big and they fell apart. This made them very difficult to handle with chopsticks. Too much rice was being used on the rolls. It took a solid 15 minutes for the server to come clear our table when the restaurant wasn't busy. Prices were decent so if you're on a budget and want fun sushi for really cheap, this might be the place for you. Just don't be surprised when you have to use your hands to pick up the rolls and they fall apart in your fingers.

Large portions and relatively cheap, but the quality was mediocre. <br/><br/>Update: I gave this place another chance and have been more impressed with the quality in subsequent visits.

Really good!. It's situated about a block east of Cambie and Broadway -still a very convenient location for commuters in the search of decently priced and delicious Japanese food. <br/><br/>I've only gotten take-out from there so far but I have to say that from what I've ordered I love it! I tried the chirashi and deluxe chirashi don- ingredients were fresh and proportionately balanced. A really nice touch I appreciated was the light sprinkling of bonito flakes on the rice, something I've never seen before and helped make the rice more appealing. <br/><br/>Food was prepared promptly and the waitresses were friendly and efficient. I would definitely return to eat in!

First time is the last time! Few days ago I been there, ordered a avocado roll, it was terrible! Dark and not fresh.

Mediocre Offerings. Went there for lunch and it was definitely busy. We ordered sushi and the portions are quite big but the fish quality is mediocre. The tuna was still partially frozen. One particular hostess/server had a VERY off-putting habit of literally screaming orders and greetings across the length of the restaurant. I was in the middle of placing my order to her when she cut me off to screech greetings to the customers that had just walked in. My lunch companion and I were almost deafened considering we were seated near the back of the restaurant and her voice carried all the way to the front. Don't think we'll be back.

I was excited to try this new restaurant, but I had to say I was disappointed in the overall taste of the food. Ordered Chirashi, and found the salmon and tuna to be cut too thick that it tasted gross. The tuna was still slightly frozen. Tried the box sushi and the smoked salmon was over powering and didn't have a good balance of taste with the scallop, Ebi, and lemon. Price wasn't too bad, but definitely the taste of the food was a turn off. The staff was attentive and friendly, I hope their food gets better. <br/>Overall experience: thumb's down

Date of visit: May 29, 2014 I put on lots of weight during my New York trip, so I have been trying to lose the weight by eating less carb and dining out. However, my evil boyfriend, who ate as much as me yet did not gain one pound during the trip, was craving for some sashimi on this particular day. We were in Richmond, but we felt like there's a lack of delicious and affordable sushi joint. Thus, we went back to Vancouver for Sushi California on West Broadway. I did not really have any craving for Japanese food today, so I just ordered my usual: Chirashi Don ($10.95) , and I substituted all the Tuna with Salmon as I do not like Tuna. My boyfriend did the same. We also requested some spicy sauce on the side as we love the spicy sauce and ordered an order of Ebi Gyoza ($5.95) . The  Ebi Gyoza ($5.95)  was pretty normal. It's just a dumpling filled with a shrimp and vegetable. I did not taste any meat in the filling. I'd prefer regular gyoza over this one as I found this one to be quite

Paradise mango roll and california roll were acceptable, but I prefer the fusion style roll in Kuma in Dunbar and I prefer the house roll in Samurai too. These rolls have too much rice yet too little mango, avocado etc. The mango roll had only very tiny piece of mango attached to it yet too much of mango syrup that covered the other flavors in the roll. Rice was just plain white rice - no vinegar and no the kinda fragrance that you can find in premium rice.

Now if only the salmon sashimi wasn’t already starting to degrade before my very eyes. A bizarre situation, my raw fish managed to be mushy, tough, and stringy all at once. Admittedly, I’ve been known to appreciate a bit of chewy texture to

The prices, quality and taste is comparable to that of Sushi Garden. Like Sushi Garden, you have to leave your name with the waitress to get a table if they're busy! Not going to lie...the fusion rolls at Sushi California puzzle me because none of them were executed very well. Best to stick with the basics like sashimi haha, lesson learned! For sushi on the cheap, I would go with Sushi Garden over Sushi California any day!! :) On an unrelated note, I ate Shin Ramyun for dinner yesterday because my dad didn't want to go out and we didn't have any groceries in the fridge. I haven't had that stuff in FOREVER haha. Come to think of it, I've probably onl

Sushi California is a medium sized Japanese restaurant located in Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver. This is a new location that has recently opened while they have another location in the Burquitlam area.

After a morning of shopping, Mother deer and I decided to go to California sushi for lunch. The Mount Pleasant location’s interior looks completely different than the Lougheed one in that it is much more modern and sleek. We got there at 2pm on a weekday and service was pretty quick. nothing's better than sushi take out on a friday night...especially at a great price like at sushi california .  top: spicy tuna tempura roll ($3.95) - deep fried tempura in a spicy sauce in a roll for 4 bucks...as good as it sounds...  4/5 bottom: smoked salmon garlic roll ($4.50) - prawn tempura in the middle with smoked salmon on top sprinkled with garlic chips, kind of plain tasting/starchy without a sauce to hold it together and heavy on the rice!   3.70/5 house roll ($4.50) - just like at sushi garden, its just loaded with stuff like crab meat, assorted fish and tamago. perfect for a filler and to get a nice variety 4/5 top: hot n roll ($3.95) - spicy tuna in the middle topped with spicy salmon, pickled onion and jalapeño, my favourite of the night, perfect amount of spiciness and delicious overall!  4.5/5 bottom: alaska roll ($3.95) - again, like sushi garden an avocado filled roll with a salad dressing type sauce and salmon. slices on top were a bit thin but the garlicky sauce

Sashimi is always solid, I regularly get atlantic salmon and toro but they always sell out of toro early evening so for the people going in after 8:30-9:00pm, don’t say I didn’t warn ya they have good tuna though so that’s a good alternative. Salmon Sashimi Tuna Salmon Sashimi Alaska Roll The Alaska roll here isn’t as amazing as other similar restaurants, they seem to pack more rice onto their sushi. I really like their Energy roll though so it’s worth a try. The boys enjoyed the flavors of their Yakiudon although I thought they could add some veggies to the dish because currently it’s just udon, beef and green onion. Beef Yakiudon If you enjoy mackerel, try the Saba Shioyaki. My boyfriend is crazy over it. Saba Shioyaki Their salads are reasonably priced. Get the Tuna Gomae! Loved th

I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll (only $2.95!) and my favourite Negitoro Roll (only $2.75!) The rolls came together on a nice flower dish. I must say the presentation was nice.As for the taste, the Negitoro gets a thumbs up. Two thumbs up for the price. The Spicy Tuna Roll on the other hand was that spectacular.

It’s your run of the mill Sushi place. I wouldn’t mind coming back, though there’s nothing that’s exactly new and exciting

Tuna and Salmon sashimi. The slices were HUGE. It was almost on the brink of being difficult to eat. However it was a really good deal and fresh! It was about $8.95 for 9 slices which is pretty good since they were so big.

Great prices for unique, innovative, delicious sushi and rolls, but not so great for long conversations...

One night in February, SB and I had dinner at the Coquitlam location of Sushi California, and it was a terrible experience. I had a salad, the contents of which obviously came from this prepackaged salad mix sold at Costco (my parents often buy the exact same mix), and our sushi rolls were practically falling apart, with the rice having no hints of vinegar or sugar. Because of this, I was quite wary about visiting the newly opened location on Broadway. But since it was late, and I was too tired to think of another option, we ended up going there anyway. I ended up ordering the  Kimchee Yaki Rice ($7.95),  kimchi fried rice topped with seaweed, diced green onions, and a fried egg.   This isn’t a dish available at a lot of sushi restaurants, but it is available here, since the restaurant is Korean-owned and operated. Despite being Korean, I don’t eat a lot of kimchi fried rice at home, as my mom only makes it for lunch, which I’m rarely home for. The table beside us was devouring this wi

Another post that I have been sitting on for a while now is Sushi California – the latest one has popped up near Cambie and Broadway. Sushi California is quite busy but I would have to say that the servers are very friendly. We haven’t had the time to eat in but we’ve taken out twice already. The first time we ordered takeout was with my parents. My mom ordered salmon sashimi ($8.95) and Ikamaru Yaki (grilled squid – $7.50). My dad, who isn’t that adventurous when it comes to Japanese cuisine ordered two dynamite rolls ($3.95/roll). Finally, I ordered the Salmon Don ($9.50). My mom’s salmon sashimi is thickly sliced pieces and she enjoyed both the sashimi and the grilled squid.   My dad’s tempura in the Dynamite roll was still crispy which was nice. The Salmon Don is a healthy portion and the taste of the sashimi is quite nice and buttery. A nice touch to the rice is that they add Furikake (Japanese seasoning that includes seaweed and sesame) to it. Delicious. There was a small bone in
