Review Red Star Seafood Restaurant - Vancouver

Chris Charles
Fantastic food, delicious, incredibly prompt, polite and accurate service. More upscale Chinese restaurant, so is a bit more pricey than typical but definitely worth a trip or for brining visitors to Vancouver. Deep fried spicy fish is awesome, crispy fried chicken is wonderful, delicious fried rice. Everything was very good. Highly recommended and we will return!

We arrived at 630pm on Remembrance day without reservation and was seated promptly. The restaurant was 75% full but service was very efficient. We ordered the black pepper crab, which was very fresh and tasty. The waiter recommended catch of the day and we also ordered deep fried squab. All was very authentic Cantonese style. Service was good. Parking needs a bit of planning ahead but not a big issue. Would go again if I'm in the area.

Had dinner with family here not too long ago and just loved the flavors. The Peking duck is crispy and moist, and the crab with noodles, delicious! We loved the combination cold plate as well. Would love to return again for their signature dishes. Do make reservations as they are crowded.

Dim sum overall very good, excellent service. Feel comfortable with social distancing, highly recommended to try.

Expensive and food is just average. Service is fine but if this restaurant is target for high end customers, they should provide a better service.

I haven’t sat in the restaurant for a while, been ordering takeout. What can I say, the food is always good. It’s a little pricy, but it really is delicious.

This place has excellent Chinese food. The Dim sum and seafood chow mein were very enjoyable.

Great Peking duck. Great quality food. Attention to detail in the kitchen was amazing - even the lettuce served were all the same size for round 2. Service was typical of dim sum style place - a little hard to get attention from so it took a little longer between requests and getting the bill, but otherwise a very enjoyable experience

What a crowd on Sunday morning! So busy and even with a reservation, there was a wait. But it was well worth it. Tastiest dim sum I’ve had in I don’t know how long (and much better than in my hometown of SYDNEY Australia. Wow: those delicate siu mai! Or the perfect rice rolls with prawns or char siu!

The environment was, at best, mediocre. My family and I came here to celebrate grandma's birthday and spent ~$350. I was so disappointed at the tiny portions of each dish, impatient staff and shit service. Every Chinese seafood restaurant I've been to, the waiters would refill hot water, take away emptied dishes and swap plates automatically, regardless how if busy dinner service was. But at this place, they never bother coming to our table unless I shamelessly hold up my hand and yell for help. I'm never coming to this place unless they revamp their style.

I like Red Star. My parents hosted my wedding reception at the Red Star in Richmond. I heard that the dim sum at Red Star is pretty good too. I suggested to Beep Beep that we enjoy our last lunch together Red Star’s Marpole location. Red Star offers free parking, though there are limited stalls. When we arrived, I noticed several parties were ordering crab and lobster to supplement their dim sum feast. It took a while for the dishes to come out, but everything that arrived was hot and fresh.

Really enjoyed my dinner here. The Peking Duck was delicious, as well as the lobster! The other dishes we ordered (pictured) were also quite good! I would come back again.

Horrible service, had a family dinner there, used a coupon and upon paying with my credit card, they hovered over me and reminded me that I should tip on the total price without the discount. How insulting, never going there again.

We had lunch and dinner at this restaurant in the past. Yesterday we came here for a Mother's Day lunch. We made reservation two weeks ago. Even though we had made reservation, the wait for a table was still very long. More than half an hour.... Lots of people were waiting for tables. The foyer or entrance of the restaurant was packed. Some customers had to wait outside the restaurant. It was ridiculously packed.

We waited to be seated. The service was quite good even though the restaurant was busy full of customers. Surprisingly a few servers took care of our table. Not bad!

We ordered a few dishes of food and some dim sum for lunch. Everything tasted great. We didn't have any complaints about it. We loved their roasted squabs and BBQ duck. The skin was crispy and tasty.

This restaurant is located on Granville Street in Vancouver. There are not too many good Chinese restaurants around that neighbourhood. Be expected to pay a little bit more, but it was worth for the wait if you would like to eat good food.

There is an underground parking next to the restaurant but not a lot of parking stalls that belong to this restaurant, so I would highly recommend people to look for street parking directly. Don't even drive into the small underground parking and get stuck that you have to wait to go in and out of the parking lot. There is free street parking just a couple blocks away.

For a pricier place it's alright. There were unique food options and it was good. My mistake however was coming here with my family on a Chinese New Years weekend. It was an absolute gong show. I reserved for 1 pm and was not seated until 2:30 pm. I don't think they understand the concept of reservations and I was starting to get the impression that certain types of customers were being seated before us, I was absolutely fuming. Although once we get inside the manager was very accomodating. We ordered quite a few things from a tofu mushroom dish, sauteed duck, typical fried rice - yang chow, sauteed beef steak. For me the first impression has been imprinted at the door and there are plenty of other options to try. So I will not be back, at least not so soon.

Portions were a good size but the cost was just as much and way too much MSG.

Sunday dimsum. Service was fair, but kitchen was extremely slow. It took 30mins for the first small dimsum to get to our table. Everyone had to wait for at least half an hour for food. Did not see much selections on the dimsum menu. Food was okay, but had to much msg for me.

Good dim sum. Always busy during dim sum and justifiably so. Everything is fresh and tastes delicious, good selection and good service. The items may cost a bit more than say Golden Ocean but there is a reason for that.

Awesome Dim Sum. I know that Vancouver has a lot of good dim sum restaurants, but one of the ones that stands out to me most is Red Star Seafood. I've been returning to this place for years. From the restaurant's quality of food, service, to ambiance, Red Star is definitely one of my favourite of all times. There are no surprises, every time I go, you can tell that they've put effort into making their dim sums. It's fresh and the portions are just right, not too small, not too big. I personally don't like dim sums that are too big, I like quality over quantity, so the ones here are just right. They also have locations in Hong Kong, which I believe is where they started, the same with Sun Sui Wah. The Red Star Seafood in Hong Kong are excellent as well, so if anyone's planning to travel to HK, I would recommend a trip there. This is because the last time I was there, they had dim sums that were made into cute shapes and designs. When I went, they had a circus theme where you can get ha gao's, siu mai's, dumplings and some other deep fried dishes in circus-related shapes (such as animals and clowns). I'm a grown up, and I can't even tell you how excited I was, nonetheless if a child went. I'm not sure if they still have them though, or if they have another theme.

All in all, this is definitely one of my favourites!

BAD RESTAURANT, CHEF CHANGED. We dined at the restaurant 2 person for $150 set dinner.
The food was horrible. The chef must have changed as I've been eating in this restaurant for past 7 years or longer.
The fried rice was tasteless & dull; the snow pea was even worse; the dessert was way too sweet (so i didn't even drink it), the shark fin soup was very bad too.
The only thing that was 'acceptable' was the abalone and the duck meat
I Will go to Dynasty on 777 Broadway next time and not come back here unless I am with client. Every dish there surpass Red Star.
The only thing that's good about Red Star is the location now.
Service was very bad. We waited 30 minutes for 2nd dish to come.

Unless you are a frequent patron to this place, don't go. Looked like the wait staff only pays attention to the frequent patrons. We were not frequent patrons, but have been there for both lunch and dinner many times. When we go with someone that the staff knows, service was fast and good. However, when we don't go with a frequent patron, we get slow service. We literally have to waive the wait staff down.
I rather go to Kirin and pay the same price.
Lulu Yang
Over priced, service is slow, they make you wait for 30 mins to get your take out food.

Dim Sum. Went here for dim sum on the weekend. It was pretty busy even at 2pm. I usually only order congee, steamed shrimp dumplings and fried rice flour roll with soya sauce. They got only 1/3 of my staple dim sum dishes right. The minced beef congee with poached egg was a big disappointment. First, the minced beef was not minced - they were thick slices of beef. It tasted kind of bloody to me, but my bf liked the congee. The poached egg was not even poached. They just cracked an egg in the middle of the congee. At the bottom of the bowl was tons of thinly sliced ginger. Why put so much in?! Lastly, the portion was ridiculously small for the price. The fried rice flour roll was okay, but overpriced again. I am usually very picky about steamed shrimp dumplings as it is my favourite dim sum dish. I must say that it was pretty good - comparable to the Jade's.

I was excited to try their steam chicken cartilage. I was a little disappointed. There was too much chicken and not enough cartilage. A final note, they don't have deep fried whitebait (those tiny fish) for those that like eating them with their congee. Overall, I would not return for dim sum.

We went to dim sum and we loved it!! No msg feeling afterall not oily at all. Service was excellent! We will be back.

Excellent Dim Sum quality without that gross MSG feeling after. Not as cheap a those on Kingsway and a bit off the beaten path, but well with the drive!

Below my Expectation. I was invited to a dinner at Red Star last week. It was a dinner for 10 people for approximately $400. The service was not good at all for a Chinese restaurant of this calibre. Dishes came too fast together and plates were often not changed between courses. It is important in Chinese foods not to mix up the sauces of different dishes. The table was not cleaned often enough so it looked quite messy most of the time.
The food was average and not innovative at all. As a matter of fact it is quite ordinary like any of the mediocre Chinese restaurant in town.

Order The Duck. Weekend dim sum was packed. Service was very good considering the volume of people and food moving about. I expected mistakes as they don't use a cart but rather bring out orders from the kitchen individually. Everything came as ordered.

I love barbeque duck and this one was excellent. Dim sum was hit and miss. Will definitely go back and fine tune my ordering. I would also like to go back for dinner. They validate parking in the underground garage.

Great roasted duck... and dim sum is ok. Roasted duck is a famous dish here, but i wouldn't say dim sum selection is the greatest and price is higher than other places with similar standard.

Right service and food for this area.... The price is fair as well...

Good selection of dim sum, and their roasted duck is so tasty!

Alaskan King crab season! Have been hearing that king crab is one of the tastiest treats from the ocean. My friends and I have chosen Red Star Seafood because it had been voted as one of the affordable places that offer good value of king crab dishes. But somehow the three-course dish let me down because it wasn’t as great as I thought.

We splurged on peking duck and it did not disappoint. The crispy duck is thinly sliced and served with scallion, pancakes, and bean sauce. For a little extra, duck fried rice can be made with the remaining meat (above). We enjoyed other dishes as well - sparing no expense in our choices. After the meal we received complimentary bowls of red bean soup

... very crisp skin, strong duck flavor, some pieces had some duck meat still attached (exactly the way I like it); pancakes a tad thick, but held up very well, no ripping or tearing when grabbing a piece from the stack; exactly the same as previous visit...

...instrumental music in the background but like any Chinese restaurant regardless of the class (maybe with the exception of restaurants in China), the loud sounds of clinking and clanking is very well heard due to the staff cleaning and setting up tables.

I really like their signature roast duck, steamed radish cake and Chinese broccoli with dried sole. Other dim sums are not bad at all.

It's always good to have more varieties right? One more good dim sum restaurant on our list:)

Apart from the soup dumplings that were slightly inferior to the soup dumplings in their Richmond location, every other item was better than versions that I’ve had at any of the local Cantonese/dim sum restaurants I’ve been to. I know that Red Star is often mentioned as being on the same level as popular favorites such as Kirin, Jade, Sea Harbour, and Sun Sui Wah. But I have never actually heard or read anyone claiming that Red Star is the best. Let me be the first one that I know of to fan the flames and make this claim: Red Star Seafood in Vancouver has the best dim sum that I’ve had in Vancouver (read: Metro Vancouver, the Lower Mainland, B.C., Canada, North America). It is my gold standard for dim sum in North America, replacing the Sea Harbour outpost in Rosemead, California… Please do not hesitate to start bashing and trashing this claim in the comments below…

Red Star's dim sum was pretty good quality for what we paid, since the bill for all four of us came to just around$50. They have a wide selection of dim sum and I didn't have any major problems with their food. The line up here can get long during weekend morning/afternoons though, but that's typically the case for all dim sum restaurants anyways. Red Star is definitely a candid dim sum restaurant that I will return to in the future, and I look forward to trying out their franchise location in Richmond as well.

Yearning for Har Gaw? Craving Cha Xiao Bao? Drooling over dumplings? Who hasn't spent a lazy afternoon or woken up bloody early in their favourite Chinese restaurant sipping tea and feasting over an assortment of Dim Sum delicacies?

I have to say their seafood dumplings is a MUST order dish.

+ all in all, red start seafood is still one of my favorite go to place for dim sum (after kirin). it has is at a good location, has free parking, efficient service and nice interior for a busy and crowded cantonese restaurant!

Chicken Knees * This is what "popcorn chicken" dreams of being. If you're not a fan of cartilage, then these are not for you. I love cartilage-y things. The knees are crunchy and the soft bones "pop" in my mouth. Fun! Red Star's version is a little different than other restaurants. Usually these are served garlicky with jalapeños, but here they have a bit of sweetness to them. It's a nice change. I like it. *Note: Sometimes these are called "chicken ankles." I think it's safe to say they're referring to the same joint with respect to our poultry friend. Green beans with Pork and Fermented Black Bean Can you tell I'm dining with others

... The geoduck was cooked perfectly so it wasn't too chewy. It goes great with the light soy dipping sauce. Roasted Squab This was perfectly roasted with tender meat and crispy skin.

Ah, Sunday..the best day of the week. Everything gets slowed down a notch or two, it seems. More often than not, it's a late snooze, a slow meander to Starbucks and then off for another dining adventure. Lately we've been hitting up a lot of Dim Sum. This past week was no exception. Our mission on this day was to check out the award-winning Red Star Seafood . Red Star has won a plethora of awards. Last year they took home the gold for their BBQ Duck at the Chinese Restaurant Awards . This year it was the "Most Innovative" award for their Dungeness Crab with Wild Rice . As with most large, upper-scale Dim Sum restaurants, this one was packed to overflowing on a Sunday afternoon. Even with a reservation, we had to wait thirty minutes for an opening. After the third time the hostess told us, "Five minutes, we'll call your name!", we seriously considering crossing the street to Talay Thai . Just as I was about to bolt, our table was finally ready. The ordering system here is somewhat confu

One of my favourites is the Gold Award dish the Dungeness Crab with Wild Rice Sea Conpoy & Chicken and Peking Duck.

Red Star Seafood is a Chinese Seafood restaurant located on Granville Street's Marpole area. It's a pleasant looking establishment with a formal atmosphere and comparatively upscale decor, but how do their dim sum dishes stack up?

When I wrote that "Cantonese cuisine is the fat, bloated rock star of all regional Chinese cuisines, cruising on excess and ripe for young punks to pick off" for the last Chowtimes dinner, I meant it. The fare is like the Bill Nighy character in Love Actu

The third dinner in the Eight Great Tradition of Chinese Cuisine (8GTCC) dinners was the Cantonese cuisine. It was supposed to be the easiest of all dinners but as it turned out, it quickly became the hardest to organize.

I remember in Hong Kong, we'd always go to may sum with my grandparents and relatives on saturday mornings. We'd get the usual ha gow siu mai cha siu bao. Nothing can beat that! My parents are leaving for hong kong for a month (jealous) so we had lunch be

For the tenth and final Dim Sum Sunday outing, our party returned to Vancouver with great expectations. We’d heard good things about Red Star – a member of our group had recently been and raved about it, not least because they served amazing “footballs”!
