Fratelli's has incredible selection of baked goods. Our personal favorite is definitely the Sicilian Canolli. The price is a bit expensive but the quality is pretty decent.
Fratelli's quite a popular bakery in Little Italy (i.e. The Drive). I'm quite impressed by their selection of tasty-looking goods and very affordable prices. I've tried their whip cream cannoli, hazelnut square, and triple chocolate cake. In general, I found their flavours to be a bit too mild for my liking, and some of their pastries do taste a bit artificial. My favourite of the bunch is easily the triple chocolate cakes.
Whip Cream Cannoli ($2.5):
3/5
The shell was flaky, similar to that of a puff pastry. It was filled with whipping cream which, while fresh and smooth, was also quite mild and too bland for my liking. I will try their regular cannoli next time for comparison.
Hazelnut Suqare ($2.5):
3/5
This consisted of layers of cake with chopped nuts and whipped cream, and was topped with a chocolate/hazelnut ganache. It was soft and moist, and the nuts provided a nice bit of crunch. Although it was sweeter than the cannoli, I still found it to be a bit too mild for my liking. It also had a slightly artificial flavour (perhaps extract) that I found to be a bit off-putting.. The hazelnut decorating the top of the dessert was unfortunately bland and stale.
Triple Chocolate Cake ($3.25):
4/5
I know that I'm biased since I'm a massive chocoholic, but this is easily my favourite of the three. The cake was very moist, fudgy, and in contrast to the cannoli, quite bold in flavour. I think that they might have purposely slightly underbaked the cake as it was a bit gooey in the middle (in a good way). It was topped with a layer of chocolate icing that was sweet, with a slight hint of salt. Again, I did find the cake to have a slightly odd scent that I couldn't quite discern; fortunately, it wasn't very strong and it didn't stop me from polishing off the cake.
Although Fratelli might not be the greatest when it comes to quality, their offerings are still tasty enough and their prices more than reasonable for me to recommend this place to those looking for a place on The Drive to get their sugar fix.
Fratelli, a famous Italian Bakery on Commercial Drive. We came here to buy some sweets to go before heading to our friend's home for barbecue. I was melted when I walked inside the shop, because the sweet scent of puff pastry cake and tarts smell so good! And my eyes cannot leave the display shelves, with great selections of cakes and pastries. It was very difficult to make decision there. Indeed, they were so fresh and delicious! The sweetness was quite mild. Price range was fair and great attentive service. MUST EAT!
God bless another great addition to commercial street. While I was taking a stroll with my husky pup I smelled fresh pastries on the block first thing this morning. I walked in and was greeted instantly. I love their setup. Clean, fresh, straight forward, community oriented. This buisness does functions and weddings. They deliver! I wanted to surprise my girlfriend with a cranberry cheese cake. It looks amazing! I scarfed down my eclair before I even noticed I forgot to take a pic of it LOL. Great little place, love it.
Mmmmm Fratelli is the best! Such a wonderful array of cakes, pastries, freshly baked bread, cookies - you name it! Their St. Honour cakes are filled with fresh custard and whip cream. Eclair a are great too, go for the hazelnut one. For those who don't have a big sweet tooth, their sausage rolls are flaky and delicious!
I love this Italian bakery!! They have a wide variety of pastries and sweets. Big and small. I can't name them all here. If you love European sweets, you should visit this bakery and check it out.
One of my coworkers bought a box of pastries and sweets. We all loved them. Even the ones who are super healthy or health conscious could not resist the pastries and sweets!! They were just so good and delicious!! If you eat them, you cannot worry too much about calories or fat.
I would like to give them a "LIKE"!
This is a well known Italian bakery in the area of Commercial Drive and a great stop for some treats on the go. They have everything here and a great window to feature some of it out front. This season it was pumpkin, like everywhere else. The goofy faced pumpkin shaped cookies were eye catching. As were the round shortbread and the Eccles, I ended up getting shopping from here, being so drawn in. But I also took the time to go through all the showcases inside, row by row. Trays upon trays filled with a multitude of cakes, cookies, tarts, biscotti, and many other pastries. Each showcase was well themed, with labelled names and some tiny descriptions, but you basically order with your eyes anyways. On this colder day the glass was moist with condensation, but it didn’t hinder the ogling process much.
Although some of their goods are a tad pricey, it all does look very tasty and the workers were all very nice and helpful
Not bad. I had a pretty decent latte. Though it was very weak, it wasn't burnt, which is a rarity in Canada. The sausage roll was tasty, but it was mostly just pastry. The cakes and pastries looked amazing, so I decided to try one. The Silk chocolate truffle bar didn't disappoint.
Helpful and tasty. I went in there the other day, last minute looking for a special birthday treat for my friend.
I was so lucky to find a big sized cheesecake marked down to 7.50 because it was a day old. I am always up for a good bargain, and they even put a big chocolate sign that said "happy birthday" on it for free!
the cake was still really good, even though it was 1 day old!
I will have to try not to buy discount cakes everyday.
We've ordered (and bought over the bakery counter) the Saint Honore Cake from Fratelli's for a number of times and it was always fresh and delicious. Firstly, the custard and whipping cream are not overly sweet, so it doesn't seem too rich after eating a piece or two. Secondly, the cream puffs and puff pastry tastes fresh, still with that light crunch on the outside (unlike ones that have been out for a long time and have gone soft). And we also like that nice fluffy/crispy crust at the bottom. Definitely thinking to order this for a birthday cake soon.
Great cakes, other stuff ho-hum. I've been in here a bunch of times (mainly in conjunction with food-shopping at Grotto next door) and I've almost always walked out empty-handed. Most of their cookies and pastries just don't grab me. Too white-sugar/white-flour for my tastes. But I gotta grive Fratelli props for making the tiramisu and St. Honore cakes that are sold a short walk away at Caffe Calabria. Those are stellar! Too bad the good stuff sells out fast at Fratelli and I have to buy it elsewhere, eh?
Breads breads and more breads !!. Potato and Leek Bread equals the same feeling as the canucks winning the stanley cup this year !!!
Cute Bakery. Went here after lunch and enjoyed myself very much. There were lots of things to choose from! I was a bit disappointed with the hazelnut cake as it felt like it sat out for quite a bit. As a previous reviewer has written, pick the things that sell out quick! I loved the majority of pastries/cakes though. I would definitely recommend the cheesecake, it's smooth and creamy with a cookie bottom. The ganache tarts were melt in your mouth lip-smackin-licious! I'll be back to try their more of their pastries and bread. Service was wonderful too, super friendly place. Prices were great, $2 per mini cake.
Fantastic Place. I just did a review on Caffe Calabria (hated it) and saw this name come up when I posted. Easily one of the best bakeries in Vancouver. Service is great, all the sweets are amazing and every time I go I am met with a great smell and a smile on my face when I leave. Two thumbs up!
I love sweets. It is the only place I can get my pastrie fix, I love it. Nice looking gilrs also :)
Good Bread. Their bread is tasty and fresh, almost as good as home made. Service is good, staff are patient and friendly. Some items are priced on par with other bakeries (biscotti, muffins, bread) while others are much higher (squares, petit fours, cheesecakes)/
Good But Quality & Freshness Varies. I'm glad this place is here; every neighborhood needs a good quality bakery (and pastry shop). But the quality varies more than it should, especially in regards to the pastries which don't sell fast. You can't tell what's fresh and what's old just by looking at it, and an old pastry is really yucky and disappointing.
I would recommend the bread, and the pastries that sell out daily such as turnovers and cinnamon sticks and whatnot; these are all in the glass counter across from the entrence. Veggie rolls make a nice snack. Otherwise, buyer beware and all that.
The prices are really affordable! And I really like the small sizes of their desserts, because it means I get to try more instead of eating a giant piece of cake.
The chocolate shavings just pushes this cake over the top. Fratelli also has a huge assortment of pastries including Neopolitains, Lemon Tarts, and Cannolis (the one drizzled with chocolate is their Sicilian
When I read today's Vancouver Sun, I saw an article featuring Canucks Cupcakes from Fratelli's Bakery on Commercial Drive…my old high school stomping grounds. We gathered up the gals and high-tailed it to "the Drive" to do some grocery shopping and buy a couple of Canucks Cupcakes for dessert while watching the game tonight. Upon opening the box, I was so disappointed to notice that I had been given a cupcake with smushed icing ! Bebe's grade 2 class is helping to decorate one of the doors in their elementary school in honour of Kesler. Every class is assigned a different Canuck. So cute. Her own personal contribution to the door was a little collage of newspaper clippings on blue and green construction paper. I also have an affinity to #17 because it used to be Patrik Sundstrom's number (do you remember him?) and I had a little crush on him when I was a teenager. I was into everything Swedish at the time. I even wanted to
I'm on my quest to find a canoli that compares to, or IS the one from La Piazza Dario Ristorante! I am really really jonesing for that sweet treat again - crisp shell, lightly sweetened, creamy ricotta and the whole thing lightly dusted with sugar. It see
After my lunch in Tony’s Deli, as written in yesterday’s post, I went to one of my favourite bakeries in Vancouver. Without further ado… Fratelli Bakery! It is really difficult to describe/explain why or how much I like this place. In a way, it is akin to
By far, one of our most favourite Italian bakeries in Vancouver. Always super delicious pastries of the highest quality. We have been here many times over the past 20+ years and have never been disappointed in every aspect of our visit. Highly recommended.
Lovely hospitality, the lady working there was so caring, gentle and kind. And omg the pastries and coffee here is amazing!
My favorite bakery in Vancouver, known best for their cannoli. Don't stop there though, because their éclairs, cakes and puff pastries are fantastic. Everytime my wife and I go, we buy a variety of goodies. We try our best to not eat everything in one sitting but always fail to do so. Make sure to have lots of coffee and tea on hand before you get here!
A gentleman in the line was telling me about how he's come here for the past 40 years and ordered a custom wedding cake for his wedding back in 1989. After visiting this cute, authentic and astonishing bakery I can completely see why.
This is a real cute and traditional, as good as it gets Italian Bakery and Espresso bar. Located conveniently 5 minutes from the skytrain in the heart of commercial drive.
Yummy treats everywhere, incredibly friendly staff and vibe as well as the wafting smell of freshly baked bread makes this joint a must. 5 stars every time no matter what you choose.
This bakery has been here for 25 years, and offers dozens of beautiful and delicious treats, cakes, and other items sure to meet with your approval.
I've recently joined an evening Church group, and take a dozen items each time I go. All of the items are devoured immediately.
Very good.
All the baked goods (I thought the cookies were a tad bit expensive) were pretty good, especially the leek potato bread. The only downside was that their latte was meh at best-- which was alright with me since this is a bakery, not a coffee shop~
It's been quite a while since we've been back to Fratelli's... And one of the items we always pick up here is their Saint Honore cake. Nothing like a good cream puff cake. But they also have a lot of other baked goodies to choose from.
5/5 star bakery! Every treat looks so delicious with great price point. Customer service was fantastic offering really good recommendations based on my needs. Ended up sampling bunch of pastries and they were so good. Definitely coming back here.
