Review Sushi Nanaimo - Vancouver

Great food and service. The fish is so fresh and tasty. The boxes are great value for money. They do take out but order early since they are very popular and busy. Love this place. This is a must try if you love your Japanese food

Always love this place for their quality of food and service. I was there since they grand open! Would recommend anyone to go there to try, would not regret!

Extremely fresh sushi. Their sashimi is fresh and fairly generous size pieces. The staff is extremely friendly. This places gets really busy on the weekends so plan ahead. Definitely my one of my fav places!!

Very good and fresh food. Extremely yummi. Could be more spicy but very delicious. Very reasonable for Vancouver. I've we hadn't been visiting from Germany, I would eat there every week 😊

One of the best sushi I ever ate... Food is very tasty and nice presentation... The staff were very kind and helpful... Love the fried tofu and veggie tempura... Restaurant was clean...the portion is very good for one person and even the lunch box is good for 2....

Well priced sushi. Probably the biggest sashimi pieces I ever had. An egg sushi was a nice surprise and tempura beef plata coming in addition to sushi board was very filling. Enjoy 😊

Absolutely delicious. Fast service. Tons of food. In and out in 1 hour. Would go again +++++++

Ordered their Tofu Don, I remember this having broccoli and it was much better back then. Not sure what happened but i felt pretty sad eating this because it wasn’t as good as it used to be Maybe other stuff on their menu is better? Besides from that I remember this place being pretty lit

Incredible food at great prices! The service is always very kind and efficient. All their rolls taste amazing but I especially recommend the Alaska Roll, Yummy Yummy Roll, and Gangster Roll the most. When making pickup orders it’s now super convenient because you can order in advance through their website. Really shows they care for the convenience of their customers. Thank you Sushi Nanaimo for being amazing!

Big portions, affordable prices, and delicious sushi! It's impossible not to love Sushi Nanaimo and there's clearly a reason why they're the best sushi restaurant in the neighbourhood. Their spicy salmon sashimi and special rolls will get you addicted!

Over-hyped. Don't get me wrong - sushi is still good but there's better out there. I guess the thing about this place is that it's the only okay/good sushi place in the neighbourhood. Heads up - wait times to get seated sometimes reach 30+ minutes.

Another day, another sushi spot. Sushi Nanaimo is the latest one for me to try with the Van crew. This is a popular place and prices are very reasonable. Apparently, this place is normally crazy busy so most people prefer to do takeout. We hit the jackpot and came on a rather slow Tuesday night. The menu is massive. Lunch boxes (11:00am – 4:00pm) look like a good deal.

Back when Sushi Nanaimo opened their portions were huge and the line ups were long. Spring forward to 2018, their portions are average, just like their sushi. Their cooked foods like tempura and Katsu don saves this review and places it at a solid 4. Their lunch bentos are a good value, however it’s just not like before. Sigh...the overflowing spicy salmon combo are just a memory.

This place had a nice hole-in-the-wall feel but is obviously very popular.

The food was delicious and the presentation was pleasant.

We will definitely go back when we are in the area.

The best sushi in Vancouver.. worth the bus ride down Hastings . Fresh and fast sushi . Great service and dead cheap.. we ate like kings and queens. We would recommend this place.

Initial impression: small but packed and loud establishment, decent variety on menu, hole in the wall place that appears to value quick in-and-out service.

Experience: the food and service were decent and on par with Sushi California. The Alaska roll was almost as good as SC and as I look over at the other tables, the slabs of sashimi appeared to be healthy in size; however, our chicken karaage tasted did not taste very fresh. My favourite part of my meal had to be the 5 pieces of nigiri I had: hamachi, unagi, toro, hotate, and inari. The rice had a subtle hint of vinegar, the way it should be. Unfortunately, they were out of the uni nigiri, which happened to be only $2.50. I mean, c'mon, you gotta try the uni if it's only $2.50. Overall, we were looking to get in, have a quick meal, and get out. Mission accomplished.

Lasting impression: would come back again for a quickie meal or take out. Hopefully they have the uni next time.

As usual, Sushi Nanaimo was packed and we ended up waiting about 10-15 minutes. One thing I used to hate about this place was that their floors were so SLIPPERY. Every time I came, it felt like they greased the floor or I was going ice skating in my regular shoes.
Negitoro roll: The negitoro roll was pretty decent, no complaints about it. Good ratio of toro and onion, mixed well and the toro was nice and soft.

On a recent trip to Vancouver, we were in a rush to have dinner before picking up a family member. My wife did a search and found Sushi Nanaimo which looked to fit the bill. When we walked in the place was packed and they told us it was a five minute wait. Five minutes later we were seated and perusing the menu. The first thought I had when I saw the prices was that the portions would be small. Was I ever wrong! We over-ordered by two rolls. The second thought I had was that the food would take a long time because of how busy it was. Wrong again. Our appetizers and entrees came out in less than ten minutes and everything was delicious and fresh. The Agedashi Tofu was piping hot and the Gangster, Canucks, and Unagi rolls were scrumptious.
Sushi Nanaimo will absolutely be on our list of family favorites. We were all fed with delicious sushi at two thirds the price of a comparable meal in our hometown restaurant.

Amazing sushi at incredible prices! Sushi Nanaimo is an one of kind because they offer delicious rolls and combos at prices you really can't find anywhere else. The Awesome roll and Nanaimo roll are my favourites and the Dinner for two combo is also excellent if you're there with a friend. The service is always efficient and friendly so this my go to place when I'm in the neighbourhood.

We were in rush and wanted to eat something quickly in the neighbourhood. Most of the restaurants that we wanted to visit were closed on Family Day. We came to this Japanese restaurant. When we first stepped into the restaurant, the ambiance was okay. A lot of tables were packed and they were very close to each other. Customers (who did not know each other) sat very close to others. We could hear the conversations next to us and we could see what other customers were ordering and eating. We felt this restaurant was not clean. Fortunately we didn't feel sick after lunch.

We got a table right away. A server greeted us and brought us tea and gave us a menu. Their menu had a wide selection of food. Their prices were affordable. Probably it was the reason why this restaurant was highly rated and many customers came here for Japanese food.

We ordered Maki party tray (42 pieces), tuna and salmon sashimi (9 pieces) and beef yaki udon. All of them were okay but not great. We had way better Japanese food somewhere else in Vancouver and the price point was reasonable and average. The quality of food and environment were better than Sushi Nanaimo. We probably wouldn't come back here in the near future.

First time, I went with my friends and we ordered not a lot. Love the price and food! The service is fast and I enjoy the atmosphere and it's always crowded during dinner time! When there's crowds, you know it's good! I ordered a roll and combo and it was delicious!! I definitely need to visit again :)

The dinner line ups can be a bit of a wait, but it's worth it. The sushi is very fresh and delicious here. If your a frugal eater, this place has value written all over it. The nigiri is cheap. I always gets the spicy salmon sashimi. It's delicious. Alot of people here get sushi combos. You leave stuffed for sure with little damage to your wallet. I'm not sure if they have there liquor license yet but one of the servers told me they are waiting for city hall to approve. But anyways, hasn't dissapointed me yet.
Karen
Decent sushi for a descent price. This place is your typical casual sushi/sashimi place. They have lightning fast service though 👍👍. I recommend getting the Assorted Deluxe Sashimi (pictured).

Had the roll combo at lunch time and made it the lunch special so it came with miso soup and salad. Very filling, extremely friendly staff, good food, and reasonable prices.
DanoRama
Sushi was good, however still unsure as to how this place has such a high rating. My guy instinct is because it may be actually Japanese owned and operated. Sushi is fairly standard (tasty and fresh). Great quick service as well.

The other day I was on a mission: on a mission to find (and eat) the BIGGEST KATSU IN TOWN!! My (google) search brought me to none other than...Sushi Nainamo!. Channeling my inner Raymond, I proceeded to order 3 dishes, to which the waitress responded: "Is that all for here, or to go?". Why do I always get asked that? ;) When the katsu arrived, it was indeed the biggest katsu I've ever laid my eyes on!! It wasn't just for show either, that thing was tasty!! I proceeded to devour the entire thing heheh. I also ordered two sides of rice (instead of salad,) being the rice bucket that I am. They layer the katsu on top of fried glass noodles, which I thought was really neat ~ edible decorations rule!!

Overall, I was pretty impressed with the food at Sushi Nanaimo, especially for the price!! Sushi Nanaimo has VALUE written all over it. The king katsu I ordered was only $7.95!! I knoww, hard to believe right? I definitely prefer Sushi Nanaimo over Sushi Garden. This place gets really busy though, even on weekdays!! No surprise here ~ us Vancouverites love our cheap sushi!!

I was on a budget and looking for dinner, my guest suggested “Nanaimo sushi”. Apparently this place is known for their quality of fish paired with value friendly prices. To be honest I have passed by the restaurant on occasion, but given its uninventive name, have never stopped to give it a second thought.

Love this place! One of the best sushi restaurants I've been to in Vancouver! Always really fast service and high quality dishes for reasonable price! Frequent customer and never disappointed! Would highly recommend! Best roll is smokey yam roll and their salmon is always top notch!
Somerville Kitchen
The gift of Sushi came to somerville kitchen from Sushi Nanaimo. There was food for 8; we were just four. There were rolls, sushi, goyoza, noodles. There were sauce after sauce.Food was your typical sushi, nothing more, nothing less. But being a gift from a special someone made the evening fun, and all left with stuffed tummies and lots of leftovers.Colourful sushi is my best descriptor.

Last Saturday my friends and I visited Sushi Nanaimo in Vancouver which is located on Nanaimo and East Hastings Street. The place was fully packed when we arrived there around 7pm. Their food was pretty much the same as Sushi Garden and Sushi California which are all owned by Koreans. Wouldn't be an option for someone looking for authentic Japanese, but maybe good place for having decent sushi at affordable prices and generous portions.
ViVi
Love this place! Service is fast and the servers are friendly. Food is delicious, big portions and very decently priced. One of my all time favourite sushi restaurants!
Marv Wang
very very interesting sushi, ordered a few of their specialty to go, and the place is quite remote from skytrain, need to go from commercial then take another bus, but totally worth the time. and so far, all the taste are really really awesome i'll say most of them are really good, if not they are not then they are just decent.

the deep fried and with sushi with sauce is awesome, can't remember the name of the roll but it was awesome i'll say :D definitely worthy of the exploration and price.

I'll definitelly recommend the place, and will definitely come here if i do have the time, but not to the point of moving my job/living nearby the area to have this awesome place nearby :D but defintely a good restaurant with great sushi.

Food: 4/5 Service: 3/5 Atmosphere: 3.5/5 Price: Avg. $18/person
Return: Definitely Must Eat item(s): Hotate Sushi (whole scallop), Chopped Scallop Sushi, and Saba Sushi

I usually order for take out. One reason is they accepted phone call to-go order, and the other reason is the restaurant would apply 10% off for to-go order. Indeed, it will apply for the 10% off discount under the following 2 conditions only: a) you have to pay in cash. b) phone call order must be called in at least 1 hour prior the pick up time. Sushi Nanaimo is one of my sushi favourites. It is somewhat similar to Sushi Garden as many sushi lovers know that, and the restaurant is operated by Koreans either. If you liked to fill up your stomach with sushis and pay less, Sushi Nanaimo will become one of your great choices!
Nomnomnom
Tasty food, reasonable price, and great portions!!!! Service is okay... Busy long line up for dinner tho! It's pretty hot inside the restaurant as well. I will definitely go back there again.
Molin Toss
Really really good for the price. The only issue is that because this place is so busy that it requires an army of sushi chefs . As such , I've had a few experiences where the roll consistency is less-than perfect due to the 'new guy'. Other than that , Sushi Nanaimo is easily one of the best places for the money in the city .
Tanya N
Never fails for please my appetite here! The food is delicious and cheap! This place is quite a gem, the only downside is that it's so far from my place but it's worth the travel for good food. Good service, fast delivery to the table. It's busy there, always. To the one waiter though, I know you're stressed because it's busy but don't show it on your face and do an eye roll. Overall I like this restaurant! Recommended!

Great value. Quality is bang on for the price, large portions, tasty, what more to say, can get busy with a bit of a wait
Eatmunchlove
Usually we’d just go to one of the many Japanese restaurants we have quite literally 2 minutes from our house, but brother deer had work that day and Nanaimo would be closer since it was on his way home. The sushi here is pretty standard, nothing we’re over the moon about but it’s good cheap eats!
Jeff Dice
Bad lunch. Service was prompt but the takeout sushi was a 5 out of 10 . Homemade sushi would be a 6 out of 10.
Blankness
So so for me. Portions are big and prices are affordable.
but the way they roll some of those larger rolls arent very good (they crumble after being picked up).
other than that, the service has always been the same for me, nice staff and food is made quite quickly.

also, if you dont want to wait , go during non-busy hours. ive been there at about 2-3pm and it's pretty quiet on a weekday
Jennifer.luong
Went from great to horrible. Used to go to this place all the time, I would say it used to be one of the best sushi joints. Until they have been going down hill and their sushi quality became cheaper and skimping on everything and servers been messing up orders (4 times)

Our first viist, and much-enjoyed!!. We (threesome - two seniors and daughter) went to Sushi Nanaimo for lunch in early-October. We walked into the restaurant a couple of minutes after it opened at 11am, and were their first customers of the day, but only by less than a minute!! And fortunately, we were able to find on-the-street parking on Nanaimo, just a few feet north of the restaurant.

We then received prompt service to a table of our choice, with menus, and requests taken for beverages (for the latter, their tea, and glasses of ice water). We chose to sit at one (of three) of the larger booth-like tables by the windows (these tables easily-accommodate four people, so were very roomy for the three of us). The remaining tables are 2-seaters, perfect when dining solo, or as a couple, but easily moved together to accommodate larger groups. There were three servers waiting the tables, answering phones, and readying take-out orders while we were there.

What we ordered:
-- appetizers - chicken karage (wings) ($3.95) - 'ok', and gyoza ($4.25) - 'the' best we've tasted anywhere - stuffed full, and perfectly prepared!!
-- tempura - assorted tempura (prawns, various veggies) ($7.50) - well-prepared, tasty and crisp batter, though I wish the veggies had been sliced a 'touch' thinner, no real complaints, a nice selection and enjoyed.
-- rolls - red dynamite rolls ($5.95) - beautiful to look at, 'spicy and tasty' stuffings, and awesome rolls w/fish flakes ($6.95) - highly 'decorated', fun to see, and tasty to eat. Both types of rolls were well-prepared, and sure enjoyed by all of us.
-- sashimi - assorted sashimi (w/salmon, tuna, octopus, shrimp, other fish & shellfish, and etc., on a bed of shredded daikon & lettuce leaves) ($14.95) - a rather nice-looking plate of offerings, very fresh-tasting, and so easy to savour and enjoy!! Daughter and I did this one, and nothing was left on the plate!!

This was our first visit to Sushi Nanaimo, and we much-enjoyed it. The food was good and very reasonably priced, the service good, the ambiance 'ok' (the music was a touch loud) .... our dining experience -- yea!! thumbs-up, and emphatic yum!!

Great Place. I always come here for the sashimi and tonkatsu. No matter what you order you get a large portion at a low price. The service is prompt and friendly. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend.

Affordable and very good. Casual busy sushi joint - hard to tell if authentic Japanese or adopted Korean but nonetheless friendly, efficient and delicious. Nothing fussy or fancy. It's a no frills place. Small, very popular restaurant. Have to wait for table at tiny entry. Crowded. You literally are inches from your stranger neighbour. Can be loud with conversation, yelling of orders, and house music. But sushi is inexpensive, quick-to-table and excellent value and quality. Coming from Victoria (the city of overpriced sushi!) this place is like striking gold. A well run place. One of our fav sushi joints in Van.
Pen
Great food but crowded all the time. Food was amazing but the place is always crowded and you're always expected to wait and because it's always full the staff is rushing you out after you eat so you can't even sit for a bit after your meal...but food is amazing nonetheless.
Unepetitfoodie
Not super authentic, I think it's run by Korean chefs ? Portion size and the food's relatively fresh quality is great for the price though. Good place for a quick sushi lunch !

Went to the sushi place to try it out was pleasantly surprised. Service was great, portion sizes were phenomenal, an overall excellent experience. I would 100% recommend this sushi restaurant to anybody, it was by far one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to.

NoM!. Quick, inexpensive, high quality Japanese food. Totally worth the drive!
Chicas
The quality is not very good, seem low quality to me. I taste many Japanese restaurants and this one is quite disappointing. The portion is big and price is cheap but don't expect good quality. They put way way too much sauce on spicy sashimi that you couldn't taste the fish at all. For same price I rather go kawa for sockeye sashimi. We couldn't even finish the food because the food taste so bland and too much sauce on everything.

Like sushi garden, Korean own cheap eatery
DineVancity
I love the atmosphere of this place! the staff is friendly and welcoming and the food is great! I do wish the place was more spacious since the line ups are incredibly long.
Cheeseburger
Great for takeout. They have really good quality and quantity for their rolls at decent prices. I ordered takeout here and it was quickly made for me-super filling and delicious. Definitely coming back!

Ninja Service and Good Value. I wholeheartedly believe that this neighbourhood sushi has covert ninjas dressed as servers in providing ridiculously fast service.

They could get quite busy AND crowded but this is my go-to place if I can't get a seat at Kishimoto on Commercial Dr (1+ hour wait time).

My fave is their Nanaimo Sushi Roll. Good value for money, big servings and pretty good sushi (not the low quality one).
Food4elephants
Friendly service. It's the new Sushi Garden: with quick service, quality food and great friendly customer service (which is rare in most fast sushi joints)! I love how they always greet and open doors for their customers. It's family friendly being a great addition to the Sunrise Community. The place is bumping! Including their tunes!
The Ikamite roll is worth a try.
Victor Li
I must say I'm a bit confused at the service of this place, normally the service is somewhat good. However during this experience it kinda annoyed me. Not only did they bring us the bill when we were still eating but the server actually took my food away when there was still food on my plate. Step it up a notch.
Big Belly
Middle of road sushi. After reading the other reviews on urbanspoon, my partner and I were really looking forward to our meal at Sushi Nanaimo. We were not impressed with the food. If this was the only sushi joint in a small town, it would certainly suffice. But in a city like Vancouver, this sushi place does not cut the mustard (or should I say the wasabi). However, we do have to make a plug for the Nanaimo roll. It was tasty and quite different.

The servers were friendly and very prompt.

If you do not have a discerning palate for sushi, this place is fine - middle of the road.
Natalie W.
Fresh. Out of my neighbourhood, but since it's my best friend's favourite sushi, I go here pretty often.

Generally, it's busy and it seems kind of disorganized at peak times. But you do get your food and beverage refills eventually.

The Nanaimo roll is yum-tastic.
Sauvetagemoi
My Favorite!. I've had chirashi don a lot and from many restaraunts, and Nanaimos chirashi don is the best by far for the best price as well. They've always been very polite and helpful and fast!!! If i ever feel like sushi with my budget this is my favorite place to go!!!
Samantha A
Possibly my new favourite sushi place! Fun upbeat atmosphere meets great service and good / well-priced food. I will definitely be back! Food 5/5 value for your money 5/5 service 5/5.
Genevieve Collins
Was in the mood for sushi, so I came in not knowing anything about the place. The atmosphere is fun, the service was prompt and the food was reasonably priced and delicious! I will be returning back with friends in tow!
FoodGoes
Great service, great food.. I have been going here for sushi 3 - 4 times a month ever since it open, and always had great food and great service. Some of reviewers say their service sucked, but it has been pretty much opposite for myself and my wife. They have staff on trying sometimes and they might have messed someones order, or not understood them properly. It is clear that many of them are ESL students and I think these negative reviewers are being too harsh. As for the farms and wild salmon reviews, you can get both. I like the taste of wild in my makis and farmed on nigiri, I am not sure why some reviewers think everyone else would want to just wild salmon.
I have tried many different items on their, while not a fan off everything, the things I do like, I really really like. Last time I was there I had the Chirashi Don, I don't like roe and I asked for no roe, so instead they added another piece of salmon, I was a happy camper, and pretty damn full after that meal
For the price and value, you can't go wrong.
PickyKasumi
Went there today with friend.. music is too loud.. bring us the bill while we were eating, tried to rush us to leave with No line up and still have 4 empty tables left. Toro sashimi are not fresh, hard and taste like regular tuna more than Toro. Prawn tempura taste fishy. Tokoyaki got more powder than meat. The famous nanaimo sushi... OMG... got the spicy tuna inside the roll are too smushy and can't taste like tuna until I need to find out from waitress. Sushi pizza hardly got fish on top.. taste awful.. it's cheap... but won't go there again..

4 STAR - ARE YOU KIDDING???. We are regular sushi consumers and tried Sushi Nanaimo because of the high urban spoon rating. Come on folks...it is a 2.5 star low end sushi place. In other words, it is OK for a low end place but is certainly does not serve "good" sushi. Sushi should be succulent, lots of fish, lots of flavors. Their agadashi tofo was rock hard with a thick cold coating - terrible. we tried 6 different rolls, they all tasted the same, and all had very little taste despite all the "toppings" and sauces. Almost no real fish in anything. Way too much rice and their rice was not superb. For cheap Brittania Sushi is better, for real Sushi Volcano kills this place.
Vin
I was impressed by first impression with the greeting at the door. As I'm eating, I slowing realize service is just your typical Asian/Japanese restaurant service=no service. I'm here on a Monday afternoon. I tried many dishes including their spicy tofu. But this dish barely have any hot sauce on it. I had to ask 3 times for the sauce and it's not busy. It's a small place but alright atmosphere. Coming back? Maybe since I live close by
Stew
Very loud. The tuna and salmon rolls were chewy because they were made ahead of time and sat too long. They need to understand body language better. If diners are still reading the menu, then they're not ready to order! Also, don't bring the bill while the customers are still eating!
Shawn
Solid Sushi Joint. Solid sushi joint.

Food is fresh, good portion size and prices are very reasonable.

Have visited 6+ times in 2013 up to March. Each time the food is well prepared and consistent.

I actually like their cooked foods here too as effort is put into it.

Restaurant can get crowded on busy times and there might be a wait. Plan your dining appropriately!
Jill
Absolutely love this place! I have been to do many places for sushi in Vancouver and this one is the best!!!
Alfaquad
What a neighborhood gem !!!! This is truly a great find in a quite area in east van. Their sushi is so fresh from the unbelievable turnover from take out and eat in diners. Come before 6 as if your a minute past you will be waiting in a line up out the door. The spicy salmon or tuna sashimi is to die for. Roll lover try their Nanaimo roll and Rainbow roll. This restaurant is a must if you live in the area and even if you don't its worth the drive. The best part of the meal is the bill at the end. Super Cheap!!!!!
Girllovesfood
They copied sushi gardens menu!!!! To the TEE.... Anyways. Its not good

Great Service and amazing food. Upon entering, the entire staff greet you, making sure you feel very welcomed. If you like sashimi, this is the place! Their portions are huge and their pricing is very reasonable. Ingredients are fresh and service is fast. Will definitely return.
Saeryn Correll
Good service, good food.. Came here with some friends after reading some reviews. The place is of moderate size, and bigger than a lot of other Japanese restaurants. They do welcome you in Japanese when you enter but they're not all Japanese - you see Korean written down in the back as notes to themselves.
Service is fast and they're attentive. People are usually roaming around and they ask if you want tea or water. As for the food, it's above-average for cheap sushi - things like toro are rather fresh and the portions of things like tempura are fairly large. If I had to criticise something, it'd be the sushi rice - I got a chirashi don but the rice was too glutinous and lacked a lot of rice vinegar and other seasoning. They tried to season it on top of the rice, but it's not enough. Still, the overall experience will make me come back for more.
Jinny
Perfect Sushi place!!!! Foo.... Perfect Sushi place!!!!
Food. Service..everything's perfect!!
This season, x-mas deco..excellent.!!
They gave me nanaimo membership card. Wow!!! It's 10% discount card.
Whatever I order!!!
I love sushi NANAIMO Forever!!!!
Beth L
Fresh and tasty sushi, super friendly service. Awesome place!
DaintySecret
Not a happy customer. I usually love coming to Sushi Nanaimo. Their sushi/ sashimi is alway so fresh. I always order the sushi pizza, nanaimo roll and the chopped scallop roll. However, this time i went, the servers FORGOT OUR ORDER! The table next to us sat down after us but got their food and finished their food before we even got our food! We were getting furious so we asked the server what happened to our food. We waited over 30mins for it to come. It usually doesn't take this long. The server apologized and told us that our order did not go through the machine. We wondered if that was true or they just completely forgot about us. At least the server was nice and gave us free house salad & 2 bowls of miso soup. When our food came, I was pretty disappointed. The quality of the sushi tasted different. It wasn't the same as it use to be.

Really affordable and Good Value. Nice Japanese Restaurant for the neighborhood. We have been here since the Restaurant opened, so really have aten their sushi for a long time. The quality and quantity is really consistent. I could not say anything bad about this place at all.

we normally order the maki tray, only 18 dollar with lots of varieties and great selections of sushi and rolls. There is one or two different items as specials per diem. I will always order those as well. The specials are either discount from the menu, or some special which is not included in the menu at all. Love, Love, Love Salmon tempura, if it is the special, highly recommend!

Busy restaurant for most the time. as the time goes, it is no longer the local secretes any more. You will see people from all kinds of background. It is truly the best deal for this area. If you like sushi, and don't want to pay big bucks....This is the place to go.

Tips: come early, it fills up really quick. ask them for VIP card, visit 10 times and get 10% off forever......
JoyCakes
Fantastic cheerful service. The food is fresh, well priced and anything you order on the menu your granteed to love!!!
Marty
Sushi for ignorant Canadians.

This place is everything sushi is NOT about. baseball sized sushi , lots of
corn-fed
farmed salmon , fake crab and cooked dishes are poorly seasoned and executed.

It has good reviews because people can stuff their face for cheap.

If youre looking to just be full go here or eat 3 boxes of Kraft Dinner at home. If youre looking for quality, you wont find it.
Travellin' Daves
Very fresh, excellent quality!. Visited at 7pm on a Sunday night.
Well.... the 20 minute wait was totally worth it. We picked this spot on a recommendation.
Kind of an odd little dining place, like sitting a noisy open kitchen. At Sushi Nanaimo it's all about the great food and it's colorful presentation. Started with the Miso soup which is priced at $1, it was simply excellent. Where can you buy anything so great for a dollar these days?, especially in a restaurant. The three of us ordered a selection of sushi and tempura.....all very good, and well priced.
One diner in our party ordered the Sushi Boat thingy, it turned heads as it made it's way to our table, you may want to have your camera ready if you order The Boat, she's a photogenic ship!
Gem
Yum, Yum, Yum!!! 4.5 out of 5!. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food, service, ambiance, price and parking is at this little gem.

First I was concerned that with the PNE opening, it will be parking hell. I went there on a Sat for lunch and found parking nearby quickly.

Second, I was used to unattentive servers in similar places and was amazed to see friendly, attentive, smiling servers.

Third, the place is pretty new and the decor is pleasant, not the usual dingy little restaurants.

I did have to wait 20 minutes for a table but life is not perfect :)

Now the food, I ordered pan fried beef udon (the only dish I complain that the beef is too salty), teriyaki chicken (exceptionally good), salmon/tuna sashimi (fresh and exceptionally thick), agedashi tofu (good), chicken karaage (average good), Alaska roll (good), House roll (good) and Dragon roll (very good). The did forget my Miso soup. But I canceled it cuz they refilled my tea a few times :)

All the dishes are very tasty and the prices are very reasonable.

I WILL be back for sure!

A new favourite. Good food, nice staff, very reasonable prices! A little loud, chaotic, and somewhat quirky but you are rewarded when the food arrives.

Great tasting sushi and ok prices -BUT I wish they used 100% wild salmon. Please ask them to change to 100% and ethically harvested fish. why are we eating Atlantic salmon in BC ? It's crazy and any decent sushi restaurant serves exclusively wild salmon. It's cool
To have women at the sushi bar not just as servers. It's 2012!!

Garbage. Had the awesome roll and I can taste the chopping board the sliced the salmon on. Not worth the $7.00.
I also had the yakisoba which was ok. Nothing special from your regular Japanese restaurant. Tentasu is better.

Great Sushi place to go!!. I go to this place pretty often. I would say like once a week.
What keeps me going is the great service they provide and the smiles that they always have on their face. Of course, I have to say the food is pretty good for a decent price.
They do have a stamp system where you get a stamp each time you go and by your 11th visit you would be able to enjoy 10% off your entire meal because the stamp card gets you a 10% discount card for being loyal.
My favorite dish there I would say is the awesome roll the second one. I get it almost every time I'm there. The difference between awesome roll one and two is the first one has fish flakes on it and the second one has the crunchy potato and yam placed on top. Like what it's called, it's pretty awesome.
I definitely will recommend it for people to do take out vs sitting in cause it is a pretty small place.

Best in East Van. This place is an awesome find. Great food, service and value! I'm definitely going to be a regular here. The Nanaimo roll is one of my favourite. They've got a winning combo!!!

Stop Yelling At Me!. No, but seriously, you get used to it and the upside is so great. After the ambush on arrival that makes any discreet meal impossible, there is the excellent service, great food and low prices to take into consideration. What a wonderful addition this is to the burgeoning restaurant scene in Hastings Sunrise! Go often!

Great food. Fresh and delivered with flare. We have made Thursday Sushi night knowing that we will enjoy a really good meal.

Membership Card. Okay, so I went again and asked about the membership card after I finished my meal. They gave me a stamp card with 1/10 stamps. Each visit whether eat-in or takeout, you get a stamp, no matter the $$. Once you fill your stamp card 10/10, you get a membership card thats good for 10% discount on your bill everytime.

So I guess... visit 10x = membership card = 10% discount from then on

-----18 Jan, 2012-----

All around GREAT :D. Very good quality and portions of japanese food for their price. They yell their greetings when you enter and when you leave. Servers are smiley, quick and informative, telling you about their daily specials. Daily specials are displayed outside their door, so you can see as you drive past :P

I noticed theres a special membership card that gives you 10% discount..no clue how to obtain one; didn't ask. Will ask the next time I eat there :]

A Rare Gem in East Van. This place has something that many sushi restaurants do not- great service! I love how all the staff greet you when you arrive and wish you farewell when you leave (in Japanese).
The food is great and reasonably priced. Hooray for Nanaimo Sushi! I'm so glad I live within walking distance.

Delicious food, great service and just a wonderful atmosphere! Definitely my new favourite place to go for sushi!

Good sushi, great value. King tonkatsu was HUGE and only $7.50. Staff was super attentive and very friendly. Not yet licensed (booze), server said 'soon'. No beer and sake at least kept the bill down ;) Great addition to the neighborhood and will definitely be back.

Fun, cheap, good quality. We went to Nanaimo Sushi for a quick, cheap dinner. We ordered Miso soup (came quick and hot), Vegetable Combo sushi, Salmon Combo sushi and Vegetable Udon. It all came quickly, fresh and delicious. We even had "compliments of the chef" treats: bean curd and rice, and at the end, cute little chocolates.
The restaurant was decked out for christmas and had christmas music blaring, maybe a little too loud, but that is by far the most complaint I have about this place. It was warm, friendly and everyone shouts hello and goodbye when people enter and exit. Friendly Japanese staff and great cooks. Thanks guys!

Great service and food!. They are a long mile better than the other japanese restaurants in the vicinity.
The food, service and price are right!
Hope this one stays around.

Great value and great service. Will definitely be going back and recommending to friends.

Cheap, great quality and service, and love the way the chefs and servers yell when someone enters or leaves! Will def be a regular

My dishes arrived very quickly and the first item to arrive was my half order of Salmon and Tuna Sashimi (half order: $5.95). The Salmon Sashimi was fresh and had a good amount of flavour to it. Interestingly, it was segmented along the white lines like toro. The Tuna Sashimi was moderately soft and a touch salty. It could also use a few more minutes of thawing time, but it was neatly cut.

There was a generous amount of Tobiko on the Tobiko & Quail Egg Nigiri. The Awesome Roll was very big, but was unfortunately not wrapped perfectly. I had a hard time picking it up with my chopsticks as it broke right away. Overall, it's one of my regular spot to go to. Food is always in good quality, no good or bad surprises.

For brother deer’s birthday we decided to order take out instead of dining out because it’s been getting quite snowy out. We usually choose from either sushi town, sushi garden or sushi nanaimo to order take out from because of the 10% discount then offer. Since I was doing the ordering, it was going to be from nanaimo because it’s my favorite out of the three. Pardon the photos, I’m sure everything would of looked more enticing on a plate…

Grayson decided to get the gomae ($3.50), of which he expected there to be a lot more spinach and a lot less peanut sauce. Either way, he enjoyed his small helping of vegetables. I got the wakame ($3.50) because I haven’t had it in a while and I love seaweed salad. Mmm…creamy avocado and sesame seasoned seaweed. How could such a small bowl of sea plant be so satisfying and nutritious? I got the vegetable roll ($2.95) with my seaweed salad, I usually get the spicy salmon roll as well but I w

...hot diggity did this place have the best yellowtail I've ever had or WHAT?! The two sushi experts agreed and hogged whichever pieces they got (we let the other try a teensy piece). Yellowtail's definitely my favorite and I don't know if I'll ever look at any other places' offerings the same way. The pieces threatened to fall apart in between my chopsticks as I picked them up because they were just that delicate and

I was expecting mediocre sushi quality because it was made so quickly. False. I don’t like raw food and more specifically, seafood. But I loved everything except the toro nigri which Beebs liked. The alaska roll melted in my mouth. It had a hint of sweet-ness and didn’t have the typical strong “fishy” taste in raw salmon. The scallop roll was fresh and sweet. The only other scallop roll I ever tried was at Honour Roll at UBC so I don’t have much to

I don’t think I’ve come across that many “authentic” Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, aside from the few downtown. However, I heard, by word of mouth, that Sushi Nanaimo was not only authentic, it was fabulously good and cheap, so off I went! First off, we have the Roll Combo (7.95). It includes California Rolls, Dynamite Rolls, Tuna Rolls, and Salmon Rolls. The california rolls had a nice firmness to the rice and wasn’t overly loaded with mayo like some places do! (cough….Samurai Sushi…cough). The dynamite roll was really tasty and, for once, the tempura actually tasted very fresh and warm! The tuna and salmon rolls were both very nicely, tightly, wrapped and fresh (not overly slimy or anything like that). The salad and the miso came with the Roll Combo. The greens tasted very fresh and crunchy while the soup was super super rich and had large chunks of tofu simmering around. Tamago Roll (1.95). They were very nicely wrapped, like the tuna and salmon rolls, and weren’t overly sweet.

First off, EC did NOT warn me about the portion sizes. So of course I ordered way too much >

One of our favourite cheap eats is Sushi Nanaimo! Great service and great food. Perfect spot to get our daily fixtures of large pieces of sashimi, california rolls, etc. I think this place is very comparable to Sushi Garden. But I personally prefer Sushi Nanaimo for dinner since the wait time is less and it is easier to find parking.
Cameras And Cuisines
The decor was nothing out of the ordinary, and if anything it is a very simple kind of restaurant. It likely seats about 60 or so. They also provide a long bench on one side of the sushi bar for people to sit and wait when the restaurant is busy. Funnily enough, I actually just came here the night before so I already had some rolls I had in mind to have. Compared to a Sunday night, when we arrived at 8pm and had to wait for about 10 minutes, it was still relatively busy on a Monday night at 6pm. The restaurant was approximately 40% full when we arrived at 6pm, and more and more people just kept sifting in! Like I said, I already came here the night before so I had an idea of what I wanted to eat, and since there was 4 of us this time, we were able to get a little bit more!
