Review Russet Shack - Vancouver

Friendly staff and creative flavours on baked potatoes. Large portions to fill you up plus it's even cheaper with Groupon!

It’s right next to the Vancouver Public Library which makes it so convenient to stop by while having a full day of working/studying at the VPL. Very disappointing this time at this place which I used to like so much as a place to grab a quick bite at the middle of the day. The quality has degraded clearly. They didn’t put enough butter to mash the potato. I ordered the Mexican potato which I have had here before. Surprisingly it came with no fresh salsa, but instead with tasteless red sauce. I also asked them to put chili on it which they charged me extra and when I asked them to put some cheese on it they said they will charge again! The staff’s attitude wasn’t that nice which wasn’t like what we have experienced here before.

About $7 for a big potato with lots of goodies on top. Enough food for a small meal. Very tasty, very clean. Fast and friendly service. Many vegetarian options. I'll be back.

I just got a butter chicken one. An almost raw potato with only two tiny pieces of chicken for $9. That's it. I just feel I got rubbed.

Best baked potatoes in town. Price is very reasonable and the owner is super friendly.

A good potato eatery. They have a nice vegetable chili and a good variety of baked, and mashed potatoes. They have a lot of different flavors and options for your potato. The price is a little more than I would be willing to pay but the quality is good. They have a small area for eating internally but no outside seating. This is where Mancakes used to be so it is a smaller storefront.

Tasty potatoes and the owner seemed to make a point of interacting with his customers. Not very much seating and the high, pedestal seats are a bit wobbly. Good option for those eating gluten-free as there were multiple menu options.

We bought a Groupon online to try it out. It's a great concept and we did enjoy it for the most part. With such big potatoes though, you run out of toppings very quickly. I ran out of Feta and Tzatziki and my girlfriend ran out of garlic sauce. And then all you have left is a bland potato. If they're more generous with the toppings, I'd certainly go back.

Had a poutine baked potato and it was the best!! Lunch companion had tomatoes, green pepper and cheese and it was equally as good! Great place!!

We will be back. My family of three (plus a baby) each had different topping. We were not disappointed. It wasn't the best set up for kids, but we made it happen for us as to be fair, the shop is in a small space.

Great little place, and friendly staff! I ordered the one item that I *thought* had no cheese in it, and it did, and the staff (who may have been the owner?) immediately made me a new one without hesitation. 5 stars for the awesome customer service alone!

Delicious , We will definitely go back again in the future. A chance to try another of the many different kinds.

Tried this earlier just to see what the fuss is all about, and from the first bite, i thought, God must have really loved me! He made a way for everything I love to come together in one spectacular meal thru RUSSET SHACK! My baked sweet potato and customized salad have never been so right! (plus i get to put all the cheese that i want!!! IkR??) The staff (slash OWNERS) are also very friendly. Did i mention the servings are HUGE too?? Can't wait to try the rest of what they offer.. i'm pretty sure they won't fail me..

This is a small shop specializing in loaded baked potatoes. You can either choose from a variety of different toppings or go with one of their specials, which are either $6.50 for (mostly) vegetarian varieties or $8.99 for meat varieties. I sampled their Taco, Steak & Cheese, and Turkish flavours. In general, the potatoes were pretty good, albeit a tad bland since they don't season the actual potatoes themselves and all of the flavours are coming from the toppings (meaning that while the upper portion is tasty, the remaining parts are bland). I do find the prices for the meat varieties to be a tad high. One thing that I'd like to mention is that during my visit, they had apparently run out of ground beef (which is supposed to be for the Taco potato) so they replaced it with steak. However, the staff did not inform me about this: I only learned after overhearing them talk. It's not a big deal - their steak is certainly tasty - but I do wish that they could have checked with me first before making the modification. All in all, while I wasn't exactly blown away by this shop, I did enjoy my visit enough and I think that it's definitely worth checking out.

Taco Potato ($8.99):
3.5/5
Disclaimer: The potato was supposed to come with ground beef, but they were apparently out and replaced it with steak instead.
This was filled with ground beef (which in my case has been substituted with steak), salsa, sour cream, green onion, cheddar cheese and taco chips. I quite enjoyed the sour cream and cheddar cheese, which provided great creaminess and flavour to the potato, which on its own was unseasoned and bland. The chips were also a nice touch, lending a nice crunch. I did find them to be a bit stingy with the meat - I only found maybe 3-4 slices of steak.

Steak & Cheese Potato ($8.99):
4/5
This was filled with steak, cheese and onions. Even though it was probably the most straightforward, it was also my favourite of the three. Unlike the Taco, there was quite a generous amount of steak present here, which was very tender albeit a tad salty. The cheese was gooey and provided a great creaminess and tang, while the green onions lent a nice fragrance.

Turkish Potato ($6.50):
3/5
This came with sausage, corn, pickles, ketchup and mayonnaise. I was a bit disappointed to find that the "sausage" was not real sausage, but rather hotdogs. It's not a big deal per se, since I do like hot dogs, but I did find the description a tad misleading. I personally did not care too much for the corn and pickles, which I didn't think added much to the dish. The ketchup and mayo were surprisingly tasty however, and went well with the potato.

Bought on Groupon. Glad to not pay full price. I get it, if you want a potato and stuff on top of it to fill you up..okay, this will do it, but.. enjoyable? no. I was super hungry, so forced myself to eat at least half but thru the rest in garbage. Ingredients were not very fresh tasting, likely from a container or can. I'd rather just buy fries at food court if I was hungry

Super awesome. I wish I had a spare stomach so I can have the whole menu! I'll just have to come back again and again instead - that's a good thing. Totally have the Butter Chicken. X-L-Ent!

Very great and friendly service! Many options to choose, ranging from British to Mediterranean. The potatoes and ginormous and very fulfilling - definitely worth the visit. I would surely eat here again on my next visit to Vancouver. Californian approved!

My husband and I came here for a quick bite before the hockey game. The potatoes were very tasty and quite giant. I ate half of one and I was pretty full. Very friendly service! We will definitely go back when we are in the area and want a tasty, quick, and affordable meal.

After 10 days of eating out during our adventures in BC and Alberta my significant other and I fancied something simple.

The Russet Shack was conveniently located around the corner from the hotel and offered that favourite comfort food (potatoes) which you can jazz up or have as simple as you want. We went for the simpler end of the spectrum as far as the potato accessories were concerned - me with mash and her with a jacket.

The food was cooked to melty perfection and washed down with a can of Sanpellegrino limonata. Yum!

great food and good ambiance. I had Greek one with extra toppings. It was huge and it was awesome! My friend has Mediterranean one and she liked it as well- so all was good than expected!

Great concept and great food. Four of us tried 4 different spuds. Each was great. Stop in and enjoy. The staff was also very friendly and helped to direct us to nearby sights.

Excellent price for a huge tasty potato. They have options for everyone: carnivores, vegetarian, vegans and gluten free. I was surprised at the number of toppings they offered. I liked the menu options as they have Butter Chicken, Thai, Mediterranean, British, etc. but opted to build my own and pay for the toppings like when you build your own pizza. (But healthier!) It was delicious and the price is right.

Being a die-hard potato fan, I was thrilled to stumble across this gem. Huge baked potato (hubby who doesn't eat the skin even said that was good!), loads of toppings AND good cold slaw?? Thanks for a great meal, guys!! Everyone else...get IN there!!

What a great find! I loved Mr. Kumpir in Vancouver and now we have this. So good. I agree there could be more meat ingredients but maybe the owner of this very new place will be able to do that some time. The place is really clean and well kept. I'm glad he opened and will be going back.

One-liner: The first baked potato shop in Vancouver with good vegetarian/tuna options and warm potatoes

Highlight: British Baked Potato

Recommended for: A craving for something super filling for cheap.

Would I go back? Yes (especially if they get some meatier options on the menu!).

Check out my blog post for the full review!

Really like the variety of flavors but they definitely need to introduce some MEAT toppings (there's currently only tuna).
The potato is baked nicely, very soft but not mushy. I personally would have enjoyed a crispier skin but it overall was very delish and filling (especially for the price).
I tried the Middle Eastern option and really enjoyed the pickled zucchini!
