Great service, great coffee and great food. The chorizo is amazing and the bread is so good that it can be eaten with nothing else. Also, the breakfast sandwich (toasted bread with ham, gruyère and an egg) is a must eat. Lastly, the place is very clean, and it has a cozy environment.
It's a cute little patisserie. I had lunch there with my husband and had the roast beef sandwich and dip. I loved the chocolate hazelnut praline eclair. They also had a small area where they sell tea, coffee and honey. I'm looking into trying the East Van Honey that has a bit of spice in it.
One of the best places to retreat and eat wholesome delicious French inspired goodies. Everything is made with care and with wonderful ingredients.
Stopped in for the first time to buy bread. Stayed for 5 mushroom soup and toast - outstanding. Loved the charm and vibe of the place. Will return (all the way from Sechelt!)
Exceptional food. Not sure that I've ever enjoyed a beef dip more. And the soup. And the service. Love this place.
Our favourite coffee spot. Sorry we are not the only ones! Weekend mornings are busy. Too bad about the hipsters who feel it is ok to occupy a four top sip on a coffee and check their social media. Time to get a real life. lol
Wonderful coffee and fresh baking. Great atmosphere. I really enjoy having business meetings at Batard. Highly recommended.
Consistently high quality. Appealing ambience. Love the international newspapers, too!
Yummy breakfast, good service! Price reasonable!
Try the best bread in the city hands down their Batard Levine - perfect mix of sour dough / whole wheat / white - crusty - chewy - moist - perfection. We only get this bread now. Don't even bother getting anything else.
With every visit I am always trying something new, but it's hard to do, when the LAST thing you ate here was AWESOME!!
I've finally had a chance to pop into this bakery/cafe after passing by it a number of times. The place seems to be quite popular and there was a good lineup when I visited at around 10 o'clock in the morning. Service seemed to be reasonably efficient however, and I didn't have to wait for too long to order. They don't have a large selection in terms of baked goods. I've sampled their Financier, Salted Chocolate Rye Cookie and Cinnamon Orange Morning Bun.
Financier ($4): 4/5
This is the first time that I've had a financier cake. I guess the best way to describe this is something in between a muffin and a cupcake: it's sweeter and richer than a muffin but firmer than a cupcake. It was very moist, sweet and had a nice fragance. There were a few cherrie sinside that lent a nice tartness.
Salted Chocolate Rye Cookie ($2): 4.5/5
I loved the texture of the cookie: it had a nice crispy interior and a wonderful soft, chewy interior. It had a great rich and fudgy chocolate flavour that was well enahcned by the added salt. This is one of the better cookies that I've had. My only complaint is that it was very small and overpriced at $2.
Cinnamon Orange Morning Bun ($4): 3/5
This is essentially a croissant that has been covered in orange/cinnamon sugar and rolled up like a cinnamon bun. The pastry might have been sitting out for a while for I found it to be a little soggy. I liked the orange/cinnamon sugar, but found that there wasn't enough of it present. The dough itself was actually salty, making the entire bun more salty than sweet. Although not quite the same thing, I really much prefer the croissant-style cinnnamon bun from Small Victory Bakery.
I quite enjoyed my visit to Batard. While nothing blew me away, I think that most of the offerings are pretty solid, and I'm glad to have finally checked this place out.
If you want to disappear for a little while and feel like you are in Paris, visit Batard. On the right is the "market place" where you can find specialty foods like freeze dried strawberries or copper molds. At the counter there are beautiful breads to choose from and stunning baked goods. I can vouch for the lemon Earl Grey Shortbread cookies. Delicious! On the left is the seating area where you can sit with your coffee and enjoy a treat.
Hanging out at Batard's is a warm yet elegant experience. I can not wait to go back. To get a real tour of the place check out the post on my site Suzie the Foodie.

Bâtard is a family business created by Chris Brown of Rise Artisan Bakery (he's the former owner on Ecco il Pane) and Bruno and Sally Born (and daughter Elsie Born) of Finest at Sea on Arbutus. Whatever the lineage, Bâtard is a fantastic bakery and more. The building is over 100 years old and and some of the exterior features are original. On the inside, things have been opened up with the bakery and epicierie on one side, the café on the other. There are local products as well as some interesting European items too.
It is a nice and cozy place. Good brunch options available although I would say it is a bit pricy for the quality. Great atmosphere with a community feel. Great spot for a first date!!
Batard is a comfortable French cafe for lunch and snack! The service is very efficient, despite the long lineups by the counter on a weekend lunch. Most of the tables are large and communal, but if you don't feel like sharing your table with a complete stranger try to snag a tiny round table for 2/3 people. There are light lunch options like avocado on toast and a BLT, and they also have quiches and soups. They have a wide range of French pastries and delicacies, and the financier I had was filled with brandied cherries and was absolutely delicious. I also wanted a tarte a l'oignon but they didn't have it so I opted for a quiche Florentine. The green of the spinach busted with flavor and the egg in the quiche was interesting, it tasted sweet! The quiche was not too filling which was nice. A quiche and a bowl of soup makes a nice lunch during a busy weekend. No service except serving of your food.
Their Koog aman is divine! beautiful valance of crispy crust with nice soft and chewy interior. not sure if it was a sugar crust or honey crust. nice balance of savoury butteriness and flavourful sweetness but not overly sweet. its quality defiinity makes up for its "petitie" quantity. I guess thats what makes it fine french pastry which is my 1st taste of that in Vancouver. The rest of the baked goods didnt looked that good. If only based on my dessert id gave them at least a 4
A cafe with a ‘French’ charm. It ‘sectioned’ into three sections. The first area by the entrance is a little shop with organic goods and a take out deli. The next is the cashier, ordering station. There were a couple of muffins. The beverage menu is on a letter-sized paper by the cashier.

Batard Boulangerie is a fabulous little spot on Fraser, a couple doors down from Earnest Ice Cream. Batard offers not only a cafe experience, but the ability to buy locally made jams, sausages, pastas, breads and much more. . My first time, I went for lunch. The staff is very friendly and approachable, and you feel like you’ve stepped into another country or time with the way they’ve put their beautiful boulangerie together.
Came here for lunch.. This place has a kick ass BLT. Avocado, goat cheese, bacon and fresh local veggies. The bread holding all the goodness is also made in house of course.
Also had a kouign-amann which was so buttery, flakey but dense from the lovely caramelized sugar. I loved how it had so much crunch and layers but still needed a bit of a bite.
Go and stuff yourself with pastries!
Why I love this place: delicious pastries in an enchantingly decorative environment. I can spend all day analyzing all the pictures and objects in the room. Try the kouign amann, it's delicious.
Would I come back: yes
Would I recommend it to others: yes
Good addition to the neighbourhood. Almond Financier $4 3.75/5 - It looked more like a blueberry muffin. The centre was very moist. Just less sugar needed. I think the icing sugar on top was totally presentational.
Kouign Amann $4 4/5 - I would come back just because of this. It has a crispy outer shell with a soft and moist centre. It wasn't as sweet as expected because of the glossy finish. It was still sweeter than how I wanted it.
Orange Cream Rhubarb Meringue $5 3/5 - One of the staff told me they will not have the St Honor for a while. I've decided to get this instead. Less of the sugar can be used. It was alight but not excellent. There were decent amount of rhubarb on the meringue too.
I've seen Batar Boulangerie in the Winter Farmers' Market with a lineup. They were more focused on breads instead of pastries. I also really like the idea of the grocery and cheese side of the cafe (especially there isn't much around). I'm glad to see this new addition in the neighbourhood along with Earnest, Graze, and Le Marche St George. I saw there will be a new coffee shop across the street soon. I'm sure I will be visiting more often.
From home-made financiers to BC’s very own The Farm House products (my personal favourite dairy brand!), this little cafe/grocer has all a locavore needs to be content. As I sat there with my sampling of goods, I couldn’t help myself admiring all the knick-knacks on their shelves – they have a selection of their own canned fruits and arguably some top-rated artisan olive oils out on the market. It’s almost like a more expansive version of Le Marché St. George. Minus the silver trays and vintage cups, of course. I’m enamoured with the whole shop, the philosophy, the people behind the brand, and the community they are trying to reach. If it wasn’t such a trek, I would find
