It was raining, and we had been in it all day. Soggy socks and a drenched jacket, the result of traipsing around without an umbrella. So when lunch rolled around, we were within walking distance of Denman Street, and thought ramen would be the cure. Something comforting to help warm us up. With all the options in this “noodle corridor”, choosing is hard. My guest narrowed it down by refusing to visit any restaurant that was empty at 2pm this Sunday afternoon. I restricted our pool further, not wanting to wait for a table. So what cinched it for us, and had us stopping at “Motomachi Shokudo” was their menu. The menu opened and laid out, outside their restaurant showcasing their black charcoal ramen.

To my dismay, the chashu was piled atop a pile of bean sprouts. It wasn’t as egregious as the towering mountain that you get at places like Gojiro, but honestly, if I wanted to eat bean sprouts, I’d be going for pho.

I’ll start with the broth. The miso flavour was present, but accentuated with a slight smokiness from the charcoal. It wasn’t particularly overpowering, and the smokiness was a nice addition, but it didn’t really blow me out of the water.

The chashu was probably the one of the highlights in the ramen bowl. Like the appetizer dish, the slices were thin enough that it wouldn’t weigh me down on the walk back to work, but still heavy enough to feel like a substantial meal. I think the chashu had been seared a bit before being served to give it a bit of crispiness and texture, which I appreciated.

Motomachi Shokudo is consistently one of our favorite ramen places in town. The texture of the ramen is fantastic, the broth is sufficiently rich, and everything is beautifully presented. The dining room itself is tiny - don't expect to be able to get a large group in.

New owner and new menu. The previous owner retired and the head chef became the owner. I was here last time, I ordered their signature bamboo-charcoal dark miso ramen and I remember the noodles were too soft and the soup was lukewarm... This time I ordered Shio Ramen and I was impressed! It was the best shio ramen I had in town and everything was perfect! Highly recommended! I’ll try the spicy shio ramen next time!

Its nice to try new tings like the bamboo-charcoal miso ramen. Nice thick soup, kinda rich but still delectable and very healthy for you coz bone broth and charcoal are considered superfoods nowadays. Chasu was ok and the egg was perfectly cooked.

I tried their Bamboo Charcoal Miso Ramen and thought it was interesting but didn't really taste that different from a typical miso ramen. The portion was a bit lacking and the extra chashu I ordered was lean and slightly burnt.

This is by far my favorite ramen place in Vancouver, and there are a lot of them!! I always love their cold ramen when they have it, super innovative with a nice touch of authenticity. Usually however I get the charcoal ramen with extra chasu. The charcoal part is hard to get over but once you do... you will be amazed!!! Their chasu is unbeatable, super soft and flaky and the fat just melts, heh like it should. Worth the wait and if you get their early you can usually get in. Super small restauarant so advise to not take large parties!! They don't allow takeout, but you wouldn't want to ruin the experience anyways!

Motomachi Shokudo Ramen, not a name that rolls off the tongue thats for sure. A friend made a quick stop in Vancouver a couple days before he went back home to the Yukon and had a hankering for some ramen. Why not I thought, it was a cold rainy day, I could go for some soup! After driving downtown Vancouver and looking for parking for far too long, we finally decided to park and “hike” to Denman through the rainstorm. The first ramen restaurant we went to, Kintaro Ramen, was pretty busy. The line up that went out the door. Unfortunately we didn’t have the desire to wetter so we decided to walk down the block to Motomachi Shokudo.

The Ramen was flavorful. This is one of the best ramen in Vancouver. The Onsen tamago was done perfectly. What is better than a hot bowl of Ramen on a cold winter day.

We came here on a Friday afternoon for lunch. It wasn’t too busy, but since there were three of us, we had to wait about 10 minutes — not too bad at all for downtown ramen. Interestingly, a group of people came here and told the staff that Kintaro ramen (a nearby competitor) told them to come here because there were seats here LOL. Apparently they had left the (kind of long) line at Kintaro too…

Accepted an impromptu invitation today to try Motomachi Shokudo. They have a variety of soup bases, including an intriguing Bamboo-Charcoal. You get a pretty big bowl with lots of soup, so the volume you get is sort of comparable to a big bowl of pho. Pork tender but not melt-in-your-mouth tender. Still, overall, you get a rich and tasty soup, a generous amount of pork, and some interesting flavours to mix it up, including a tender boiled egg and seaweed.

Finally visited one of my old favorite ramen shops in Vancouver again. Motomachi was one of the first ramen shops established in what had become ramen central. This was my go to restaurant whenever I was craving ramen before the recent boom. Now, having eaten at most the new shops, I still think Motomachi is one of the best.

The noodles and organic chicken broth is always consistent. Plus their charcoal black miso ramen is a pretty original menu item. Though over the years, they have changed the way that they served their chashu and gyoza. On this visit, I was happy that they are grilling the chashu again. I only wish that they brought back their gyoza from years ago. It used to be much juicier than it is now and was an elongated shape that was not common which made me believe it was housemade. Their gyoza now tastes kinda generic.

Motomachi has a steady flow of regular customers, but the lines are not crazy long like other popular ramen shops in Vancouver.

Food was good and the servers were nice. This places feels more comfortable and is cleaner than Kintaro Ramen. Although the seats weren’t that comfortable, the ambiance was quite relaxing in comparison to Kintaro Ramen’s rushed atmosphere.

Will wanted his last lunch in Vancouver to be Ramen. So I took him to the corner of Robson and Denman, where we could choose from some of the best Ramen places in the city. I was thinking either Kintaro Ramen or Ramen Santouka, but both places had a big line-up. There was a smaller line-up at Marutama but I wasn’t a big fan of the place. Motomachi Shokudo seemed to have a decent rating on both Zomato and Yelp, and since there were only a couple people waiting, we settled on this place.

And I actually liked their broth in my Extra BBQ Pork Miso Ramen ($12.95), which was warm and not overly cloudy. The noodles were thin but had a nice and firm texture. The added beansprouts and bamboo shoots helped a bit too. But if you are obsessed with the soft boil egg in your ramen, the version here might be a little disappointing.

Came here near closing at around 10ish with a group of 4 including me and we were seated immediately. The tables were extremely small so we had to huddle together to avoid taking up space of the incredibly small dining space available. I ordered the miso bamboo charcoal ramen as it was the first time I saw a variety of that kind so I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed at all; the broth tasted how a miso broth should taste: aromatic, multi-layered and slightly creamy but it had that earthy flavour to it with the addition of the charcoal powder which really sold me on the dish. The noodles were slightly more al Dante that I would've liked but there were by no means undercooked. Only gripes I have with the dish was the condiments; the ajitama (soft boiled egg) given to all four of us were very small in portion and the cha schuu was larger in portion than usual but it was as tough as rubber, quite bland and the rest aka corn, green onions etc. were barely evident. I could understand the lack of condiments due to the fact that it was near closing time. All in all, will definitely come back around an earlier time to try again....

Tsukemen is certainly spicy and tasty.  The menu offered extra noodles for $3 and I thought what a good way to enjoy more of the broth!   BUT I was told by the server you can only order this at the beginning?!?!   This is unlike the "Kaedama" system in a lot of the ramen shops in Tokyo I've gone to.  Perhaps something was lost in translation ;-)

They say sometimes the best things in life are found when you least expect it, and I think that was the case with Motomachi. Discovered whilst turning away from a humongous line at Kintaro, the ramen here is pretty solid. Although I have been coming here quite regularly, I didn't have a chance to write about it until now.

Coming here has made me find almost everything I needed in my ramen. Not only does it come out quick and cheap, but the broth tastes amazing. From the thickness of the broth, to the noodles to the toppings, the spicy chicken miso ramen is delicious. Would like it to be more spicy though.

Moto Machi was simply AMAZING...I wish I had more days in Vancouver to dine there AT LEAST one more time!  Recommended by a BC local and the broth was very flavorful which complemented the perfectly cooked and firm noodles!  The wait staff and kitchen staff were very welcoming and accommodating!  A perfect escape from the chilly and rainy weather outside!

I came back after a bit if a bitter experience here. This place does have great ramen. The consistency of the noodles are excellent. They are nicely alkanized giving them that rich orange colour and chewy and not sticky texture. The soup was not fatty, but still very complex and almost smoky tasting. The egg was so so. The price was great and I loved how it included the egg all in.

This is the only place in Vancouver having Bamboo-Charcoal Black Miso Ramen.

"Bamboo charcoal is effective for improving digestive functions and relieving skin problems, and it is excellent for dieting and anti-aging." Is it a gimmick?

Love their dark broth. The egg is done perfect too. The only thing is you can't go here and get a table while waiting for your friends. Basically your whole party needs to be here before being seated. It's a fairly small restaurant so i guess it's understandable.

Came here during our first night in Vancouver, and were greeted by a line out the door! Waited approximately 20 minutes, and then were seated inside. It's a super small ramen joint (think Japanese-style ramen places).I ordered their black bamboo charcoal ramen... special in that the broth is literally pitch black, and different in that it tastes basically like garlic and salt. Charcoal does, indeed, taste like nothing! My parents did like their respective ramen bowls, so that was great. I wish I ordered something else, but I guess that's what I get for trying something "different"!

It had been several years since I had gone to Motomachi Shokudou. With so many ramenya opening up in Vancouver, you can never run out of choices. I was craving some good authentic Japanese ramen, so I decided to come here again. The tiny restaurant was packed, but luckily, we only had to wait a few minutes before a tiny table opened up for Sheepie and I.

There are many popular ramen restaurant in Vancouver, mostly clustered around Denman/Robson. The most popular ones are denoted by the crazy line up. Forget about the waiting line, my sister showed me  Motomachi Shokudo, about 10 meters away from Kintaro. Although curious about the popularity of Kintaro, my hunger couldn’t take an at least 30 minutes wait, so Motomachi Shokudo won over. ( Apparently, Kintaro and Motomachi are owned by the same proprietor)

In the land of Ramen joints that is the Robson and Denman area you better make good stuff or you ain't lasting all that long! Motomachi Shokudo has not only survived but it has won awards along the way. So its got to be good..... right?

I went for the Shio Ramen and the Butchigiri Gyoza. Both were good. The Ramen was super flavourful and the pork was probably the best tasting pork I've had in a Ramen to date. The Gyoza was equally as good. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. The service was fast, efficient but typically, it seems for Ramen places, quite impersonal.

All in all it is very good but with the calibre of competition around it, it doesn't stand out for me. I'd go back though.

In Perfect Japanese Style. I am going to do this review short and sweet. In Japanese Style. Pffaa, at least let me try.

How many Japanese ramen joints in Vancouver downtown area alone? Your guess is as good as mine but "plenty' is the close answer. We have good old Kintaro, almighty Santouka, and recently opened on International Village Taishoken. But sadly none of what I mentioned reminds me of my three-year contract work days in Tokyo. I guess it's because the taste and quality of some joints are great but their interior and service are just... no. Except this one.

Enter Motomachi Shokudo. Located by Denman and Robson Street, you will find this small -- even to Japanese Ramen joint standard yet very Japanese-ly decorated space that serves mostly Japanese ramen (Their gyoza is da bome!! haha but that's not the point of this review.). Everything about this restaurant presents the authentic atmosphere of young yet sophisticated Japanese culture I encountered back in that city. To me this is very good, I mean real good. Sometimes when you visit a Japanese restaurant, all you have for your money is some Americanized-Japanese flavour and pathetic pseudo-Japanese menu title.

For the ramen, I have two words for you: Spicy Miso. With all the add-ons you'd like, it's going to be a dollar or two more expensive than you pay at your Tuesday Japanese ramen joint. The noodle is great enough in the rich & density department, and the soup is deep (:D) yet not as "oily" as other joints serving which you so used to now just OK with. Just the way you'd have in any good Ramen joints in Tokyo.

This is my most favourite Japanese ramen restaurant in Vancouver, and dare I day it is the best.

NOT too oily, a bit salty. Ramen expert always mention about the soup -> ramen -> meat...
To me, the soup and ramen was just satisfied, the best part is the meat (pork). not too oily, but a bit salty.

Best in Vancouver, hands down. I have tried all the other places around but will always return to Motomachi. If you want to wait outside in the rain for a good, cheap, greasy bowl of ramen, go to Kintaro 2 doors down. If you want quality delicious ramen without the huge wait and sauna atmosphere then motomachi is for you. I always get the Nama shoyu (raw soy sauce) ramen with what they call 'flavor oil' - burnt green onion oil, so good! Adds the right amount of oil to an otherwise fairly lean dish. Toppings are fresh and some may dislike it but it is kind of nice to have less fatty char siu pork on top. Love it!!!!

Definitely worth going!. I have been receiving really good comments about this ramen place, so I decided to go with my friends for lunch after having our morning classes. The reason why I really like this place is that it is not crowded like Kintaro, where it feels as it doesn't have a good enough ventilation system, and I hate the huge line-ups at Kintaro....

The bamboo-charcoal black miso ramen is one of the best ramen I have ever had. The noodle was cooked just right, not too chewy but not too soft, and the broth was the most amazing part. It tastes a bit different from the typical miso, but since I always prefer ramen with a strong flavour, I enjoyed it really much. Also, because of my experience of broiled eggs when I was a child, I was reluctant whether I should try the onzen egg, but it definitely adds value into the whole ramen bowl. The only thing that puts me off is that the meat is too lean, but it didn't affect too much of its grade.

I had come back to this place a few times, and it was still so good that it becomes one of my favorite ramen place =D

My favorite ramen place in Vancouver. I've been to other ramen places like Kintaro/Benkei/Santouka/G-Men (and other ones that might not belong to this league), and I still find this place to be my favorite. I tend to prefer less salt and oil, and the ramen here fits that description. Well, to a certain extent :)

Even better than Kintaro. I'm aware the place is both opened by the same chef, but there's two things that sets this place apart from Kintaro.
1) Way shorter line up -- Kintaro has become synonymous with great ramen in Vancouver, and many don't realize Motomachi is opened by the same great chef. The longest I had to wait here was 10 minutes.
2) All organic -- Unlike Kintaro, this place seems to have a more health conscious niche to it, and I like that. Their ingredients are supposedly all organic, and I think the freshness shows.

Also, note that they use chicken broth instead of pork broth like Kintaro. Personally, I prefer chicken broth.

The negative compared to Kintaro would be that you don't get to choose the richness of your soup.

This is now the best Ramen place we've tried. Big bowls, excellent noodle taste and texture, lots of quality toppings, rich and tasty broth. Not too salty either. Very authentic, and a very cool looking place to hang out. Really good ramen places can be a little more expensive, and this will cost you about $16 or so dollars per person if you have a beer, but it is well worth it.

Kintaro's Hot Cousin - Excellent Ramen!. Why hello Motomachi Shokudo. You're posh, sexy, and speak with a French accent - but can you cook me a big bowl of super satisfying ramen like your cousin Kintaro?

You're certainly prettier than your cousin. Your warm wooden walls are more soothing than Kintaro's lime green painted walls. Your tree stump tables are more intimate than Kintaro's bargain bin IKEA crap. And your rectangular communal table, wrapped around a cool wheat garden, is certainly more inviting than Kintaro's big ugly group table. I even like the classical music playing - it suits you.

Motomachi ShokudoBut how's your ramen? Your prices are about $1-$2 more than Kintaro (~$10 for a bowl of ramen). You have a pretty face, but can you impress where it really counts?

Yes. Motomachi Shokudo serves up excellent ramen. The noodles are chewy. The broth is full of flavor, albeit not as fatty as Kintaro's (this is good or bad depending on your tastes). And the toppings are fantastic: fresh vegetables and meat sporting sharp grill marks - won't find that next door.

Affordable, tasty, and authentic food.
Soothing, warm, and intimate decor.
Fast and friendly service.

No longer will Motomachi Shokudo be thought of as a ramen backup plan. I'd go here even if there wasn't a line up next door at Kintaro.

We went to check out Motomachi Shokudo on a late Friday evening and the place was packed. It probably doesn’t help how tiny this ramen’s digs are. It can fit at most 20 people so we ended up having to wait patiently while wafts of ramen broth tantalized our taste buds. Even crazier is the ramen shop a few paces down, Kintaro Ramen, had an even bigger lineup outside the door. Good for them though (apparently, they are owned by the same owners). Wish I could have tried a few more ramen shops but this was the one and only during my trip. Super sad, I know.

Hey guys! To cap off this week’s feature on ramen, this last piece is on one of Vancouver’s smallest ramen stops, Motomachi . Does their famed Himalayan make a difference in their broth? Read on to find out. Food: Team Itadakimasu arrived here and I ordered a Gyoza and Bamboo Charcoal Dark Miso Ramen . This comes with a very dark broth that’s supposed to go well with the noodles. The taste wasn’t too different from your typical Miso broth but there was a smokey taste in there which was interesting to say the least. Noodles here tasted a little oily compared to Santouka, Hida Takayama , and Shibuyatei which affected their absorption of the broth. I’m not sure if the charcoal has anything to do with that. The chashu was a little dry but the soft-boiled egg delivered quite well in terms of gooey-ness.  The Japanese gyoza was pretty tasty. There’s no soup trapped inside and so it’s full of meat; my favourite! The vinegar added a nice sour layer to the savoury meat and I’d recommend this as a good dish to share. I used to come here all the time, but now that ramen competition has intensified this past experience wasn’t as magical as I remember. The Himalayan salt seems to be a pretty hot topic here but I don’t think it makes much of a difference if you’re ordering a Miso broth. Features: If you’re looking for tiny this is the restaurant to be at. Seating probably around 20 guests this is one of the smallest ramen joints I’ve been to. Dark walls and cozy lighting fill the small room and there’s a nice plant in the center bar so you don’t have to awkwardly see the (likely to be) stranger across from you. Washrooms are single units so don’t be too hurt if you have to wait. It’s clean though not automated. Service: It took about 10 minutes to get a table at 5:30pm so you know this place is still pretty bumping. Tea service happened once and we got a nice roar from the kitchen on our exit. That’s my favourite part of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver. One-Liner:  A ramen rest

All of the ingredients are organic and super delicious. The broth is extremely savory, and the noodles compliment it in the perfect way. Some might think it’s salty, but not this sodium enthusiast. I was pretty grossed about by the egg at first, but it ended up being my favorite part. This Ramen place shows that the more really is merrier. I’ve heard of blackened fish and blackened chicken. But blackened soup? Or bamboo charcoal dark miso ramen, to be more precise. In Asian cultures, charcoal powder is considered a tonic for digestion, skin problems and aging. But the flavour? At Motomachi Shokudo, a top Japanese ramen house in the west end of downtown Vancouver, the soup is delightful—beautifully presented in a large ceramic bowl, with curled noodles, a soft-boiled egg and barbecued pork. But the revelation is the dark, pungent broth, highlighted by the smoky charcoal powder.

Santouka Ramen has my number one vote because of the delicious melt-in-your-mouth toroniku (pork cheeks) and tasty pork broth. However, their regular cha-shu is actually inferior when comparing it to Motomachi Shokudo's cha-shu. If I only had $10 to spend on a bowl of ramen, I will head over to Motomachi Shokudo. Otherwise, a bowl of Tokusen Toroniku Ramen will make me very happy, costing $15. I personally find Kintaro Ramen a bit too rich and greasy for my taste, but I do have my occasional craving for their yummy Cheese Ramen! It is all personal preference, so leave a comment stating which is your favourite ramen shop :)

I LOVE this ramen and soup. First, the ramen is cooked perfectly al dente and this bowl is just packed full of all sorts of goodies - peas, corn, green onions, bamboo shoots and so many more delicious veggies. And then there's the soup... oh the soup. Rich in miso flavour and just spicy enough so that it gives you a bit of kick but you'd still be able to drink the whole bowl. Surprisingly, the weakest part of this bowl was the chicken - I mean, it tastes good but since everything else is super awesome, I honestly didn't even know or care if there was chicken in the bowl.

While there’s plenty of ramen options in the neighbourhood, for me Motomachi stands out as a favourite. The ramen is excellent here - good options, quality ingredients, and decent portions. Intimate space, friendly staff, quick service, good ambiance. Seating is kind of uncomfortable so I wouldn’t come here for a lengthy meal, but great for a quick bite solo or with a couple of friends - tables are small.

We came here as the lineup outside Kintaro Ramen was a bit long for our liking and our kids were super hungry. Plenty of seating available here so were worried about how good it would be. There was no need to worry. We found the quality of the Ramen broth to be excellent (rich and plenty of depth in the flavor with the right amount of umami) and the noodles in particular to be even slightly superior to the ones at Kintaro. The Gyozas (both spicy and regular) were very tasty and perfectly cooked with just a slight char and crispness to them. The flavor of the filling in the Gyozas were also slightly better than Kintaro, in my oppinion. Surprisingly! They ended up running out of soup while we were there and we only had the choice of the Tonkotsu broth. Which as I wrote, was excellent. This is a testament I suppose to the quality of their Ramen. Though I love the Garlic and Spicy Ramen at Kintaro and the overall quality of their food, I would not hesitate to return to Motomachi Shokudo for sure. We had an excellent experience here.

It’s very authentic and not too complicated! I love that the chair is so unique! I also love the fact you can hang your jacket on the wall and not worrying where to put them! Services are very nice, they are very efficient and kind! I ordered Shoyu chicken chashu and gyoya there! So delicious!

Delicious! The ramen broth is lighter and they have the black miso flavour! The pork kakuni was also tasty. Would go again, perfect date spot for the winter!

This place is amazing. It has a very traditional/authentic Japanese feel. Indoor is small but cozy, which really adds to the experience. The staff was friendly and courteous. I had their shoyu ramen and it was absolutely delicious. I found it lot better than other higher end ramen places in Vancouver that are famous. Totally recommend to try this place out in the west end.

I used to come here a lot. I used to love their Spicy Miso Ramen which included chicken, corn, lotus root, sugar snap peas etc... Then later on they changed owners and tweaked that fantastic Ramen!!! Now I don't say is as good anymore. But it's still on my top 3 Ramen shops that I like in Vancouver.
