Shared a platter for 2 yesterday, this was my first time trying smoked bbq meat and it was amazing! Definitely coming back! The servers were great, the food is heavenly, and perfect portions too! Me and my fiance eat a ton and it was the perfect amount of food,100% recommend this place to anyone looking for some good bbq.
Yummmmm the brisket is sooooooooooooooo (seriously add all them o's) delicious!!!! And the fries were really good and the ketchup was yummy (homemade? I dunno but it was freakin' tasty!) and so was the beans and mac... mmm and the pulled pork... we got a platter between 3 people and gorged and it was really good and well worth every penny! That brisket though.. I need to take my bf. *Homer Simpson drools* mmmm meat.
We came across the Devil's Elbow after attending the Queen+Adam Lambert concert at Rogers Arena, and has a great late-night snack here.
We ordered the Brisket Nachos and House Salad to share, and I had a Blueberry Heffeweitzen to go with it, while my wife had a Raspberry Ale. I really enjoyed the nachos, as they were well-layered, with cheese and toppings throughout the chips, unlike some that have masses of over-cooked cheese at the bottom.
The salad was reasonably good, but suffered IMHO because of the Dijon mustard in the dressing (which is one of very few flavours that I don't like), but my wife liked it so no fault against the chef.
This is a bar/bbq joint located right next to the ever popular Jam Cafe. In addition to their regular menu, they also offer lunch combos where you get a sandwich, a side and a beer for $15. Being a non-drinker however, I stuck to their regular menu, and had their Chicken n Waffles as well as a Mac n Cheese, which I added pulled pork to for an additional $5. I found their food, with the exception of the pulled pork (which was very tasty), to be too bland but still enjoyable. The portions are fairly generous, makinge their prices quite reasonable. The service is casual but friendly. All in all, even as a non-drinker I think that the food here alone is worth checking out (personally I'd actually rather visit here than wait over 30 minutes to get into Jam Cafe next door).
Chicken n Waffles ($16):
3.5/5
This consisted of a waffle and two generous pieces of fried chicken, and was accompanied by a side of syrup and butter. The chicken had a nice crispy coating that had some nice spice to it, and although it was white meat, was still quite tender and relatively juicy. Unfortunately, I found the meat itself to be completely underseasoned and very bland. I liked the waffle however, which was fluffy with some nice chew. The butter had a nice sweetness to it, and the syrup had a great smoky flavour that I really appreciated. The portion was also fairly good and quite filling.
Mac n Cheese + Pulled Pork ($10 + $5):
3.5/5
The noodles here were well cooked and were tender while still retaining some chew. I did find it to be a tad dry however. More importantly though, the dish again was quite underseasoned and very bland on its own. Fortunately that was offset by the addition of the pulled pork, which was tender, juicy and had a great smoky flavour as well as a bit of sweetness that I really enjoyed. There was also quite a generous amount as well. While the mac n cheese wouldn't have been very good on its own, it was quite tasty when paired together with the meat. The portion was also quite generous too, and since I was quite full from the chicken n waffles, I ended up taking most of it home.
Summary:
Food: 3.5/5
Price: 4/5
Service: 3.5/5
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: Pulled Pork, Chicken n Waffles
Smoke house, bar food favourites.
Made reservations on a Friday night. Great atmosphere & ambience.
My recommendations- the dirty fries & mouque choux.
Bring a crowd & try the share platters!
Yummy bbq! Great smoked meat with a large variety of yummy sides. Friendly servers and yummy drinks! Would recommend, although gets pretty busy fast!
Best place to gather chill catchup do work spend time kill time hang out celebrate. I love coming here when I want to have a few drinks or local beers
Grabbed dinner with some friends here Sunday evening as I was curious to try yet another downtown bar. A good friend of mine had recommended so I figured why not? First impressions of the dining room; decor of the pub almost felt like I was on a movie set filming a pub scene (good thing). Friendly & attentive wait-staff made our experience pleasant for sure. Simple, uncluttered food menu + expansive spirit selection. We had: southern fried chicken sandwich, devil's burger, "dirty" fries, chicken & waffles, pulled pork sandwich plus two orders of wings (BBQ + S/P). Everything was delicious & I was definitely stuffed! Though I have to say the wings, though passable, left something to be desired. Great experience all things considered & your boy here is definitely looking forward to future trips to the Devil's Elbow.
Best place to sit and read a book, especially if you manage to nab a table by the windows. The negronis were delicious and they have a great scotch selection. Try the Dalwhinnie 15 year. The service was excellent.
Devil’s Elbow is located in between Chambar and the recently opened Jam Cafe. My friend and I originally had plans to check out Jam Cafe, but the line was insane at the time, and we noticed that Devil’s Elbow offered brunch so we walked in. The interior fit in with the whole Gastown vibe. Their brunch menu was not very extensive, but still had good choices.
Convenient location near Stadium skytrain station at the edge of Downtown. This is a homey pub with good selection of drinks and BBQ/smoked foods. I had the Chicken & Waffles, which was interesting because the fried chicken was more Cajun-style. Big portions, I couldn't really finish and left the place super stuffed. Come here for refreshing experience if you don't wanna crowd with everyone else in Downtown.
Vancouver has some great Asian eats, but when it comes to Mexican or BBQ, we’re a little behind the times. Although we have a long way to go, I’d argue that the Mexican food scene has slowly improved over the past five years or so, but I’m not sure the same thing can be said about the BBQ scene. Granted, newer restaurants like Peckinpah, Buckstop, and the Hog Shack have popped up and offer some variety over the previous reign of Memphis Blues, but they all still receive mixed reviews. And we certainly have nothing that can compete against the different varieties of BBQ offered up down South. So when I agreed to meet up with Kili the Dwarf and Lapin en Cocotte for some BBQ at The Devil’s Elbow in the former location of Chambar, I was hesitant to say the least.
