Shared a platter for 2 yesterday, this was my first time trying smoked bbq meat and it was amazing! Definitely coming back! The servers were great, the food is heavenly, and perfect portions too! Me and my fiance eat a ton and it was the perfect amount of food,100% recommend this place to anyone looking for some good bbq.
Yummmmm the brisket is sooooooooooooooo (seriously add all them o's) delicious!!!! And the fries were really good and the ketchup was yummy (homemade? I dunno but it was freakin' tasty!) and so was the beans and mac... mmm and the pulled pork... we got a platter between 3 people and gorged and it was really good and well worth every penny! My 2nd visit (from the US). Nothing short of brilliant. Delicious, unique, fabulous fun! I took my Canadian colleague here and he ordered the brisket burger...he took a bite, and motioned for me to wait a moment...."one of the top 20 best burgers EVER". I had the brisket dinner with mac n cheese and that sassy coleslaw. I had a Brown Derby cocktail this time and we had the beer, bourbon and bacon appetizer. We walked 12 blocks in the pouring cold rain...WELL worth it. Bravo DE! (Awesome staff too)
We had the plater for 4 it was great! Shared with you younger (smaller appetites) and 2 older (bigger appetites). Perfect amount of food and all were filled up. They made us burnt ends (not on menu) and they were great. The maple vinegar are Brussels sprouts are a must. Nice place to eat. We will be back. Great location if your heading to the game
Easy place to rate. 5 stars. Been there a dozen times over the last couple of years and had a great experience every time!! Triple Pork sandwich? Kraken Rum? Southern Fried Chicken sandwich? Pothole Filler Stout? Fun staff? What more could a sane man ask for!!!
While waiting for family to arrive I had the Whiskey, Lager, and Bacon special. The service was on point, the Red Breast Whiskey was slightly smokey and friendly/lively, the house Lager was a good pairing, and the Bacon was ; a nice tie-in.
It's easy to recommend a visit, and in fact I'll make plans to go back soon.
We came across the Devil's Elbow after attending the Queen+Adam Lambert concert at Rogers Arena, and has a great late-night snack here.
We ordered the Brisket Nachos and House Salad to share, and I had a Blueberry Heffeweitzen to go with it, while my wife had a Raspberry Ale. I really enjoyed the nachos, as they were well-layered, with cheese and toppings throughout the chips, unlike some that have masses of over-cooked cheese at the bottom.
The salad was reasonably good, but suffered IMHO because of the Dijon mustard in the dressing (which is one of very few flavours that I don't like), but my wife liked it so no fault against the chef.
This is a bar/bbq joint located right next to the ever popular Jam Cafe. In addition to their regular menu, they also offer lunch combos where you get a sandwich, a side and a beer for $15. Being a non-drinker however, I stuck to their regular menu, and had their Chicken n Waffles as well as a Mac n Cheese, which I added pulled pork to for an additional $5. I found their food, with the exception of the pulled pork (which was very tasty), to be too bland but still enjoyable. The portions are fairly generous, makinge their prices quite reasonable. The service is casual but friendly. All in all, even as a non-drinker I think that the food here alone is worth checking out (personally I'd actually rather visit here than wait over 30 minutes to get into Jam Cafe next door).
Chicken n Waffles ($16):
3.5/5
This consisted of a waffle and two generous pieces of fried chicken, and was accompanied by a side of syrup and butter. The chicken had a nice crispy coating that had some nice spice to it, and although it was white meat, was still quite tender and relatively juicy. Unfortunately, I found the meat itself to be completely underseasoned and very bland. I liked the waffle however, which was fluffy with some nice chew. The butter had a nice sweetness to it, and the syrup had a great smoky flavour that I really appreciated. The portion was also fairly good and quite filling.
Mac n Cheese + Pulled Pork ($10 + $5):
3.5/5
The noodles here were well cooked and were tender while still retaining some chew. I did find it to be a tad dry however. More importantly though, the dish again was quite underseasoned and very bland on its own. Fortunately that was offset by the addition of the pulled pork, which was tender, juicy and had a great smoky flavour as well as a bit of sweetness that I really enjoyed. There was also quite a generous amount as well. While the mac n cheese wouldn't have been very good on its own, it was quite tasty when paired together with the meat. The portion was also quite generous too, and since I was quite full from the chicken n waffles, I ended up taking most of it home.
Summary:
Food: 3.5/5
Price: 4/5
Service: 3.5/5
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: Pulled Pork, Chicken n Waffles
Smoke house, bar food favourites.
Made reservations on a Friday night. Great atmosphere & ambience.
My recommendations- the dirty fries & mouque choux.
Bring a crowd & try the share platters!
Yummy bbq! Great smoked meat with a large variety of yummy sides. Friendly servers and yummy drinks! Would recommend, although gets pretty busy fast!
Best place to gather chill catchup do work spend time kill time hang out celebrate. I love coming here when I want to have a few drinks or local beers
Grabbed dinner with some friends here Sunday evening as I was curious to try yet another downtown bar. A good friend of mine had recommended so I figured why not? First impressions of the dining room; decor of the pub almost felt like I was on a movie set filming a pub scene (good thing). Friendly & attentive wait-staff made our experience pleasant for sure. Simple, uncluttered food menu + expansive spirit selection. We had: southern fried chicken sandwich, devil's burger, "dirty" fries, chicken & waffles, pulled pork sandwich plus two orders of wings (BBQ + S/P). Everything was delicious & I was definitely stuffed! Though I have to say the wings, though passable, left something to be desired. Great experience all things considered & your boy here is definitely looking forward to future trips to the Devil's Elbow.
Best place to sit and read a book, especially if you manage to nab a table by the windows. The negronis were delicious and they have a great scotch selection. Try the Dalwhinnie 15 year. The service was excellent.
Devil’s Elbow is located in between Chambar and the recently opened Jam Cafe. My friend and I originally had plans to check out Jam Cafe, but the line was insane at the time, and we noticed that Devil’s Elbow offered brunch so we walked in. The interior fit in with the whole Gastown vibe. Their brunch menu was not very extensive, but still had good choices.
Convenient location near Stadium skytrain station at the edge of Downtown. This is a homey pub with good selection of drinks and BBQ/smoked foods. I had the Chicken & Waffles, which was interesting because the fried chicken was more Cajun-style. Big portions, I couldn't really finish and left the place super stuffed. Come here for refreshing experience if you don't wanna crowd with everyone else in Downtown.
Vancouver has some great Asian eats, but when it comes to Mexican or BBQ, we’re a little behind the times. Although we have a long way to go, I’d argue that the Mexican food scene has slowly improved over the past five years or so, but I’m not sure the same thing can be said about the BBQ scene. Granted, newer restaurants like Peckinpah, Buckstop, and the Hog Shack have popped up and offer some variety over the previous reign of Memphis Blues, but they all still receive mixed reviews. And we certainly have nothing that can compete against the different varieties of BBQ offered up down South. So when I agreed to meet up with Kili the Dwarf and Lapin en Cocotte for some BBQ at The Devil’s Elbow in the former location of Chambar, I was hesitant to say the least.
We decided to check out Devil's Elbow because it was available on Open Table and close to the skytrain. We will likely return for the great atmosphere and decent food. We'd recommend it over Memphis Blues, which was always just okay.
I have heard great things about this place, so when looking for a happy hour spot, I jumped at trying their $6, $6, $6 offers. Wine, beer, and appetizers at $6 each. Walking up to the building, the window read “beer, bacon, bourbon”, I thought, “this is promising”. The building was black in cast iron with their logo in red, a muscular forearm lifting a trident in the air. Though I guess it must be a pitch fork, because that is the devil’s weapon of choice.
On Beatty Street in downtown Vancouver is the wonderful Devil's Elbow. It's located next door to the new and improved location of the popular Chambar. The full name for the pub is Devil's Elbow Ale & Smoke House, and it's the Vancouver venue for the Howe Sound Brewing Co. of Squamish. Howe Sound brews some of the best craft beer in BC and the Inn in Squamish has become a favourite spot for Jeem and others too. The Vancouver pub takes its name from Howe Sound's popular Devil's Elbow India Pale Ale.

At lunch time, their $15 deal is amazing: entree, side and beer. They have a good variety of sandwiches you can choose from. I tried the duck and I loved it. The sides are not your typical fries or salad, they also offer mac and cheese if you're really hungry. The beer selection was also decent and a welcome addition to my midday meal. I hear they also have live music every Wednesday evening, which we have yet to check out! Hopefully soon! It's located where the old Chambar used to be... stop by if you're in Gastown!
Awesome lunch deal. Great little beer /sandwich /side special for $15. Excellent bahn mi
Pub food perfected, but a bit pricey. As my partner put it "pub food perfected". The licorice stout (a new introduction to the menu with an IBU of one of the highest I've tasted) was so rich and beautifully dark that holding it up to the candle let no light through. Their fried pickles are amazing, as are their ribs and sandwiches. This place is a great place to take a few friends out for either a good meal or just a drink and an appetizer, however it is on the pricier side. The beer is reasonably priced, as it is their specialty, however if you'd like a glass of wine or a whiskey you're looking of upwards of $9 a glass. Their food is also quite high for what it is, I feel. Let's hope that their high prices mean that their employees are being paid well!
Great food, excellent beer and awesome staff. I have been a fan of Howe Sound beers for a few years now and happened to walk by this restaurant while visiting from Alberta. Kaleah was our server and made us feel right at home. Had the Rail Ale Nut Brown and chicken sandwhich. Will definitely make this a regular part of my future visits to Vancouver.
Awesome beer selection, many of the good ole ales that I prefer over lighter beers. The smoked brisket sandwich was very good, the dijon mustard and horseradish added that nice subtle bite to it all as your mouth is trying to comprehend the amount of flavour and juiciness that is the brisket. Fries were pretty good too, liked that smoked creole mayo as well, a good twist on the overdone chipotle mayo.
Smoke House and Craft Beer. What a great resto! Amazing décor to match with the incredible food and great craft beer! The smoke flavour in the food is so good that I had to get a smoked chicken sandwich to go! There are other smoke houses but this one is head and shoulders above the rest!!
Finally...a Craft Beer and Smoke House Combination DONE RIGHT!. Was at the opening last night and it's finally great to see someone do this style of restaurant the right way. Howe Sound Brewing has done a great job with the decor, giving the Devil's Elbow a warm warehouse feel to match the 20+ taps. And it's great to see that it's not all Howe Sound beer. While many of their favourites are available (Bay Ale, Devil's Elbow, Howe Sound Lager) they're also carrying quite a few guest taps, great idea. And the food was awesome. We had the smoked duck BLT, Brisket sandwich, warm potato salad and the mac n cheese, and it all hit the spot. If last night was any indication of what's to come, I'll definitely be back.
For a downtown bar close to the stadium district, you can't go wrong with the quaint, appealing bar. In between Crosstown and Gastown, it's wedged in a fancier district near the stadiums and makes for an appealing watering hole.
