Shiro is a real dining experience. There's lots of different items to choose from and after tasting their sashimi it now makes it difficult to go back to my regular sushi places. The service was attentive and we look forward to visiting again soon and trying more items on the menu.

Currently my all time favourite sushi resturant. Shiro has very fresh sashimi (can't taste that seafood-ness). I ordered take-out recently, and the food was amazing. The spicy salmon roll is highly recommended. I enjoyed their chopped scallop rolls, assorted deluxe sashimi, and their salmon avocado (which in my opinion was a bit expensive). Also, if you order between 4-5pm for take out its 20% off.

Busy little Japanese restaurant. Quick and friendly service. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. We over-ordered but managed to eat everything. Sashimi was fresh, sushi was tasty and tempura was crunchy. Would recommend as a standard Japanese spot.

This is a long time favorite for my family.  Great quality for affordable prices.  Their food was one of the first things my little niece decided she liked and we had hours of fun watching her scarf down their food.

Things that stand out for me is that they use fresh wasabi, real crab in the Cali rolls, and have excellent Japanese servers.  They also give you a pack of Pockey with your bill which is a nice touch.

All in all it's an extremely solid option if you're in the Cambie area.

My favourite go-to sushi place hands down in vancouver. The fish is wild, the selection always changing and the environment is friendly. Not the biggest place, or the most central but definitely worth the trek from downtown. Decent prices for the quality of the sushi they serve!

I hadn't come here for dinner in ages. I knew the sushi or food at Shiro was great in the past. I came back here again after many years. The quality of food was great that it did not disappoint me. The restaurant is always busy. It is always full that people have to line up and wait at the entrance.

My friend and I ordered a lot of food such as tuna and salmon sashimi, curry tuna croquettes, eggplants and deep fried "tofu skin" (as appetizers), shiro maki, negitoro maki, and special scallop roll. All the raw fish were fresh and tasty. All the sushi were having the right size. Some Japanese chefs put a lot of rice on the sushi that is not proportional between rice and sashimi.

Customer service was great here that servers always checked on our table or others and made sure they took care of all customers' needs. A couple of things that my friend and I did not like was that the size of the restaurant was small and it was packed with many tables and chairs. All customers were sitting very close together. It was kind of uncomfortable. One of the servers was very impressive that he was not a Japanese but he could speak Japanese fluently; however, he was very loud talking and doing bigger gestures that Japanese servers don't normally do them. Native Japanese servers are very polite and talk respectfully to customers or anyone.

There is a tiny parking lot in front of the restaurant but it is always full, so if you come here for meals, either walking or parking on the street is the best.

I actually remember coming here over fifteen years ago with my aunt… which goes to show how long this restaurant has been opened for. So, I’m not going to count that visit because I don’t remember anything about it except for the fact that I went there LOL. Tuna & salmon sashimi, $14.95: We really appreciated the fact that they had freshly grated wasabi here, as most places do not! I normally like to eat my sashimi plain, but I used wasabi this time because it was freshly grated.

Great fresh sashimi, definitely try a don! Moderate price is worth the quality and charm of this place.
Toro and hamachi nigiri: ermahgawd this was really good! Definitely super fresh and buttery. Don't miss out if you're a tuna/toro lover :)
Monkfish liver: really interesting flavour and creamy texture
Tuna don: really fresh tasting tuna. There's a bit of ginger taste to the rice, but I liked it, quite fresh that way.
Deep fried eggplant with miso sauce: nice and crunchy, miso sauce is quite flavourful so a little goes a long way.

Was quite happy with the sushi and makeral aburi. They did a delicious aburi makeral better than Miku. They ha a powerful kick of smokiness, tang and tart.

Sushi appetizer was better than average also. I think they use a different rice m8x for neguri than aburi

Would definitely go back to try omakase

As much as I love budget eats (it runs in my blood) I love splurging on a little something something now and then. And by "splurge" I mean spending more than $15 on a single dish...ha. (Yes I realize $15 isn't exactly splurging...).   Well...if I'm going to park my money anywhere, it might as well be in my stomach!! (jkjk...I would rather buy a house.)

Being the relatively price conscious person that I am, I rarely order "higher end" items like: lobster, crab, foie gras, deluxe cuts of sashimi, etc. If anything, the closest I'll get to eating high quality seafood on a regular basis is by way of ordering a chirashi don (or a sashimi don of some sort.) Sashimi dons are basically my "gateway" luxury seafood...until I can afford something else

Anyways, a few days ago my mom and I went to Shiro for lunch! Shiro is an authentic Japanese restaurant on Cambie, known for their amazingly fresh seafood! I enjoyed my first visit so much that I decided to revisit 2 days later! And guess what? The waitress remembered me!! :D

This humble Japanese restaurant serves up some of the freshest sashimi. The chefs are Japanese and I believe there is a connection between Shiro and the restaurant Sushi By Yuji in East Van on Kingsway. Anyways I had the Shiro Roll, Katsu Don, and Agedashi Eggplant. All very tasty!

I've tried a lot of sushi from a ton of different places all over the Metro Van area, and this place is BY FAR the freshest, most flavourful, and HANDS DOWN the best sushi you will eat. I'm basing this review on the salmon, did not try the tuna or other sashimi/ rolls. The Karaage wasn't the best ever, Kishimoto on Commercial Drive still takes the prize for me on that, but it was still good. Staff was super friendly. If you enjoy fresh ingredients and yummy food, give this place a try. Definitely my new go-to spot.

Shiro is a busy Japanese run restaurant on Cambie St. The emphasis at Shiro is more on the quality of the food rather than the quantity. The sashimi taste great and the rolls are good as well.

Shiro can be a bit pricey (a bit more expensive than your average sushi joint). Also, be sure to come down early as the place fills up quick! We recommend the Shiro Special Roll.

Authentic Japanese, around same price as Toshis. Came here on a weekday around 8:30 or so, it was still quite busy. I was excifed to try a new sushi joint. Heard good reviews about this place. For the price its authentic Japanese sushi not Chinese or Korean. The sashimi I would say was the best. It is more pricier then other places maybe by a few dollars but worth it. Gomae was mediocre, I have had better. Also got the Shiro Roll? It was way too many favours in this one, salmon, tuna, ika, hamachi, Was too much and I had to break it apart to eat. One thing about this place is the wasabi, you can tell its fresh and not out of the tube.Love the $5 plum wines and the dessert pocky =)

Box Sets anyone?!. Small family style Japanese Restaurant.
It's cheap for Japanese food & better than expected.

I suggest you order the box sets as opposed to a-la-carte. It's cheaper that way.Their fried stuff (i.e. tempura/ croquette) are done really well.

Only thing I'd wish they'd improve on = size of the sashimi.

I like how they give you a packet of Pockey at the end as well. (not sure why though)

Shiro - the Place. I have been eating at Shiro's for 20 years now - although it is graded as #2 best, I think it is the #1 best for sure - the quality and the quantity for the price is awesome, the sushi makers are exceptionally friendly, the waitresses cute and funny and very good at what they do. I have take so many people to Shiro and they ALL loved it -
Keep on the good work Kazu.

Unbeatable Sushi. A great sushi restaurant that resembles small, family run sushi restaurants in many Japanese Cities and towns. Although we expect to wait for a while after reading blog posts of Shiro, we were lucky enough to be seated right away as there were 2 seats at the bar table available. The quality of the fishes and oysters are great and fresh. We realize the rice and the nori are A grade quality. The combination of fresh seafood and rice makes a sushi even better. The chefs use the best part of the fishes (Hamachi-yellow fish contains some fat that makes it even tastier), just literally melts in the mouth. However, the major drawbacks are that the rice has too much wasabi that affected the taste of rice, and the toro-fatty tuna does not contain enough fats that typical toro sushi does. Nevertheless, the service is fast and efficient. Also, the sushi chefs made the sushi and sashimi at an unbelievable speed. That shows the quality of the sushi chefs. If you are hungry, definitely go there and your stomach will get filled up quickly.

After work sushi stand by. This is one of our favorite sushi places because they are consistent in their quality and it's good. The sushi is always fresh and the fresh wasabi kicks butt. Their menu is not full of fancy inventions but just straight forward good sushi done well. They use top notch ingredients like wild salmon. I always order the salmon and tuna chirashi and the fresh crab cone.

They have been around forever and that's a sure sign of a good joint.

My favorite sushi place!. Shiro has been around a longtime. I was taken for lunch there by Japanese friends when I first moved to Vancouver 20 years ago. Shiro had a full head o fhair back then! It's a staple of family Japanese Restaurant in Vancouver. Fresh food, friendly staff, it's always busy and full of Japanese people which is a good sign! Not unusual to see a line up or people waiting in the entrance.

Things I always order when I make the trip from the North Shore: BC cones, tuna tataki, uni and another dish which I forgot the name, small grilled fish (sardines? you eat them whole, the head and all)

If you are a sushi aficionado you must eat there!

Had a wonderful weekday lunch at Shiro. Arriving at 1:30, it was not crowded at all. The fish was super fresh and the meal very tasty, but the decor could use some upgrading. If we lived in the neighbourhood, we'd definitely go back over and over again, but there are other sushi joints closer to us that are just as good.

but the sushi bar only seats about eight people and we had to sit at a table. the decor is pretty bad though, not a very good ambiance. plus, why on earth would a japanese restaurant/sushi bar have a television going on the wall??

One of my favourite sushi places. The sushi here is always fresh and tasty, and even better, the sushi is authentic! A nice treat to look forward to is the package of Pocky that accompanies the bill at the end of the meal. The only downside to Shiro is that the service isn't as efficient as other places, so every now and then, expect having to flag down the server to refill your cup with tea!

Lovely place. We both liked the inside, and sat at the bar. The bbq smoked salmon belly was great. The chicken teriaki roll was chewy and I will not order that again. My sweetie enjoyed the spicy dynamite roll and when she told me that it was super hot, I decided not to partake. The tuna takaki was awesome - although I think the other sushi place a bit further up on Cambie still gets my vote for best tuna tataki *ever* (so far). And the gyoza were yummy.

Happy Thursday everyone! It’s almost the end of the week, so let’s talk some sushi. For part two of Itadakimasu’s sushi outing we went to Shiro . I had heard some good things about the wasabi here, so is the wasabi the catalyst for superb sushi or could you homebrew your own for the same effect? Read on to find out. Food: For dinner I ordered a Takoyaki (deep-fried octopus balls) , a plate of Special Assorted Sushi (Shrimp California Roll and a selection of Salmon, Tuna, Surf Clam, Yellow Tail, Squid, Octopus, and Shrimp Nigiri), and the daily special of Tuna Karaage . The Takoyaki came first. This tasted better than takoyaki I’ve had at the Richmond Nightmarket and the batter was cooked very well (gooey on the inside, crispy on the outside). The bonito flakes came out alive and moving which is a good indicator of how hot these come out. Next came the Tuna Karaage. The tuna was a little dry on the inside, but the batter covering them was pretty juicy. I think I’ll pass on the appetizers next time though. The sushi is the important bit here. I couldn’t decide what I wanted so I ordered a whole bunch. The sushi quality is good here. It’s better than Matsuyama but not as gooey soft as Tokyo Joe’s . The real draw here is the wasabi . They use fresh real wasabi here which gives you a sinus-clearing feeling instead of the usual pasty spicy powder wasabi. All of my nigiri dipped well and were greatly enhanced by the wasabi. I would argue eating sushi here without wasabi is the wrong way to do it. You get asked if you’re cool with wasabi because they expect you to eat it if you are, so answer carefully (and say yes).  Features:  This is a small authentic Japanese restaurant that seats about 30. The kitchen extends into the restaurant so you can get a good look at the fine work in the kitchen if you sit at the bar. The largest table here can hold 6 guests and if you’re a fan they have a ton of merchandise for sale (t-shirts, bowls, Pocky, and more). Service: Service was time

Wax On, Wax Off. Wax on. Wax off. Sand the floor. Paint the fence. Mr. Miyagi, is that you? No, it was not Mr. Miyagi, but once you stroll into Shiro’s Japanese Restaurant, you’ll understand why Shiro had me feeling a little like Daniel-San in 1980s Reseda, Los Angeles. It’s not every day you get to take it back to the basics and have your sushi served to you fresh and unaccompanied by pools of multiple mystery sauces...

Been going to Shiro for many years now. They’re always a good option when you want more high quality Japanese food. That being said, it also comes with a quality price tag, but completely worth it. The restaurant itself is quite tiny, I highly recommend making reservations. They get busy really fast really quickly. The fish is always fresh, and everything is prepared with care. They also have weekly/seasonal special dishes that’s not on their menu. Service is quick and prompt, but sometimes when they get really busy, you have to get the server’s attention. As it’s a small space, seating is uncomfortable at certain tables as the back of your chair is touching the back of the chair of the table behind you. Overall it’s a great place for quality sushi and sashimi. I wouldn’t recommend big groups or a fancy date night though. Parking is also a struggle as they are in a small plaza.

One of my favourite sushi spots in town. Shiro never disappoints. They're currently offering 20% off all nigiri (on Wednesday and Thursday only). Our go to dishes include: - Deluxe assorted sashimi ($35.00 for 17 pieces) - Aburi butterfish box ($12.00) - Special scallop roll ($5.95) - Ume shiso roll ($3.95) - Negitoro roll ($5.50) - Bluefin negitoro roll (when they have it) - Toro sashimi ($13.95 for 5 pieces) - Nigiri - toro ($3.65) always good. Chu-toro ($3.85) so buttery when they have it. Tamago ($2.50) to end They also offer homemade ice cream ($4.95 for 8oz). Flavours include hojicha, black sesame, pear & yuzu and chocolate crunch & cream. Incredibly fresh and consistent. Make sure to try their butterfish too.

Always love it when the grilled fish is done perfectly. Not too dry, not too fat, not to salty nor not too blend. They just managed to do that! I’d say everything on their menu is pretty decent, and their service is also on the spot. A very popular spot with the locals, but unfortunately they don’t take reservations. The parking can also be a problem but if you don’t mind walking, there’s plenty of street side parking on the 16th.
