This year Fannypack and I did birthday dinner a little different.  We didn’t tell each other where we’re taking them so it was fun to see what we came up with.  It was also hard though since…we’ve both been to so many restaurants that it might be a repeat!

L and I finished shopping in South Granville. Before spending the afternoon at Granville Island, I suggested we have lunch at one of my old haunts – Café Salade De Fruits. I’ve been dining here since it first opened, back in the early 2000s. For this post, let’s listen to Les Champs Elysees by Chantal Chamberland.

Wonderfully authentic French experience with the French speaking waiters and even customers. The food is absolutely delicious, and if you think you will order from the menu, give your waiter a chance to tell you all the specials and I’m sure you will change your mind. The atmosphere is cozy and conducive to conversation without having to battle against loud obnoxious music. Here, it’s a place to be at ease with a good friend. The sitting area is quite tight so there isn’t as much privacy, but it’s like you are in a European Cafe—community-friendly. Pricey for sure, as you would expect for great French cuisine. Would go here all the time if I could afford it. But I’ll save it for special occasions.

This is a small but popular French cafe located a couple of blocks from Broadway. They serve a lunch menu consisting of a rotating variety of sandwiches, quiche, crepes and other items. I had their Poulet Cordon Bleu and Daily Sandwich (which was steak). The food was tasty and pretty good portions for the quality and price. The service was quite friendly, and the staff took their time to explain the menu to me. I do have one complaint however: they appear to have forgotten to serve me any complimentary bread. Even though I had ordered more than enough food, and was certainly not left hungry, I still couldn't help but feel a bit jealous seeing all the other tables receiving plates of bread and butter. Bread aside however, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Cafe Salade de Fruits, and I'd highly recommend checking this shop out.

Poulet Cordon Bleu ($18):
4/5
This consisted of breaded chicken breast that's stuffed with ham and cheese, and is served with a creamy mushroom sauce, fries, and salad. The chicken was quite tender and moist in spite of being white meat, and is very flavourful from the ham and cheese. The mushroom sauce was creamy and had a nice fragrance. I also really enjoyed their fries, which were thin and super crispy.

Sandwich + Soup ($14):
4/5
Their sandwiches vary; the one I had was steak. I'm generally not a big fan of steak, but I really enjoyed the version here: it was quite tender and juicy, albeit just a tad underseasoned for my liking. I really enjoyed the bread, which was nice and crusty, as well as the condiments, which included caramelized onions and mustard. The sandwiches come with either fries, salad or soup; I went with soup since the chicken cordon bleu was served with fries. The soup was a creamy clam chowder; I quite enjoyed it, even though it was a bit short on clams (which I didn't mind since I'm not big on clams).

Summary:
Food: 4/5
Price: 4/5
Service: 3.5/5
Overall: 4/5
Recommendations: Steak Sandwich, Poulet Cordon Bleu

Omelette with Soup or Salad $12.00 ~ 蕃茄南瓜濃湯,味道不錯,但奄列只屬一般

Steak Sandwich with Soup or Salad or Fries $13.00 ~ 用多士夾著燒牛扒,再配以砵酒洋蔥和美奶滋,相當好吃,薯條也炸得十分香脆

Fish of the day with Rice or Salad or Fries $18.00 ~ 今天用的是紅鯛魚Red Snapper,吃起來近似烚魚柳,賣相甚差,口感和味道亦一般

Steak with Fries and Salad $18.00 ~ 用了牛柳而不是牛扒,牛肉外層燒得微帶焦香而內裡肉質仍然保持軟嫩多汁,再配搭大量炸薯條和雜菜沙律,非常好吃

came here during lunch after doing some routine testing, and always wanted to go here, but no opportunity yet, so this time i planned my opportunity, came in luckily as a solo diner places/tables are easier to get, ordered the daily chef creation, and the soup then apparently the waiter make mine into a combo because it's the same price with or without the desert, very thoughtful of him despite of the busyness of the restaurant/lunch hour, so overall the food was okay, maybe due to it's lunch and i think the selection are a little bit lighter as well. but overall taste wise everything was spot on as predicted and it was delivered correctly

Good food, but maybe a tad on the greasy side for me. Ordered the quiche with a side of fries and it was a lot to handle. Their fries are house made and truly excellent. They did lack in the condiments department though. Service was friendly but sometimes had trouble with basic things like splitting the bill and understanding what we were asking for.

I have been coming here for years. I've never really thought to write about it as I just wanted to keep it for myself. They are well established in the area. They have gone through some renos and expansion through the years, but the food and service has been consistent throughout. Prices have changed with the times, not the steal it was years ago, but still pretty good value considering quantity & quality.

If you want comfort French bistro food with down to earth service in a casual setting, this is the place. We came here for an early brunch today, and it was perfect as we had the place to ourselves. We had the escargots to start. C'mon man. Who wouldn't want escargots for breakfast? The escargots were tender and the garlic butter was perfect to dip our sliced baguette. I, of course, had the moules frites with the cream sauce. It has always been my go to dish. The mussels were plump and perfectly cooked. In my opinion, it's tastier and better value than the one at Chambar. My wife had the lobster benny which had nice large chunks of lobster. She said that it was rich, delicious and bargain at $14!

After a disappointing foodie week, I can't think of a more decadent brunch to spoil ourselves. And it didn't cost an arm and a leg.

I initially didn't want to rate this place as I wanted to keep it for myself. It is my favorite French place in Vancouver and has real French people working there serving real French food. I know it because I was born in Paris and lived more than 20 years there.

The mussels are our favorite, with lots of bread :)

It's cash only and you must make a reservation for dinner. They have a small patio which is ideal for brunch/lunch on a sunny day.

This hidden gem is attached to the French Cultural Center. I would suggest trying their table d’hôte (weekly 3-course meals) - it's almost like being able to have DineOut Vancouver meals every week even though it's not DOVF! The only thing I didn't enjoy about my meal here were the desserts... note: CASH ONLY!

Tucked in the French Cultural Centre on West 7th is a casual French bistro serving good quality food with fine dining service, Cafe Salade de Fruits. For a few years now I have heard a lot of about the bistro such as the prices are reasonable, mussels are a must order and the place is small so make sure to make reservations. Fortunately arriving out of the blue on a weeknight reservations were not needed! I still recommend reservations however since there are not many seats.

I have no idea why it took me decades to discover these French Gems of restaurants in the city (Read Vancouver French Gem #1). And how can one not fall in love with a café with such taste in art. café salade de fruits is more of a bistro than a café. Service is offered in French, unless you choose to speak another language. Specials and more specials on the black board. Pleasant experience sums it up.

My friend was celebrating her birthday at Cafe Salade de Fruits and I’ve always wanted to try it! It’s on 7th between Fir and Granville and it seems to be the only restaurant on the block. They have a small patio space on the sidewalk but the inside of the restaurant is small. We sat right next to the kitchen counter so we could see all the delicious food coming and going! I also liked how they have a large painting of TinTin and his dog on the wall.

Although I wanted to try the Steak Sandwich too, I had heard great things about their Moules et Frites. So, I spent a bit more for lunch to try this dish out and I couldn’t be anymore happier. I got the regular size for $16 and it was a huge pot! The mussels were one of the most fresh and plump mussels I’ve had. There were no empty shells. You can choose between some broths, and I went for the classic white wine and shallots. All the guys tried some and said they were delicious! It also came with a huge order of fries again. These were skinny and crispy. I ended up dipping them into my broth. I wished there was more bread to do so as well.

Went to this community centre restaurant with some family tonight. When we arrived at 6pm, there were already quite a number of tables on the patio and most of the tables inside were reserved. Luckily, we also made reservations and were seated promptly. Overall it was a good experience. I wasn't blown away but it's a solid restaurant with fresh ingredients. It's a little tight, cash only, but I'd recommend a try. I probably won't be returning though: I'd rather have French food from my French cooking classes.

Good: EXCELLENT. Staff was super nice and friendly, but they forgot our order. We (2 of us) waited for an hour, and watched the tables next to us (both were large groups) get their food prior to ours, despite having ordered first. We thought it was reasonable to wait before speaking up since they were busy, but you would think that someone would have wondered why we were still there when there was a line of up people waiting to be seated. The food definitely made up for the wait.

Three of us went for lunch during the weekday. The restaurant was small and packed, but had a lot of unique ‘French’ decor that gave it a nice European atmosphere. The complimentary slices of bread were soft and spongy. Tasted really good. We ordered a plate of pâté which went even more well together with the bread.

...we ended up walking up the street to Cafe Salade de Fruits, a cute French-style restaurant that’s hidden in the bottom of a residential tower. We managed to go in for their brunch menu, and I definitely had to dig in the back of my brain for those years of French in high school – all the menus were in French and the servers (or at least our server) was from France or somewhere where they speak French. Actually, by the time we walked to restaurant and got seated, the sandwich I ate earlier had digested and I was pretty full. But I had heard so much about this place before that I forced myself to try something anyways, and thus, went into the infamous #secondlunch. Pain perdu et sa salade de fruits – french toast with fruit salad ($9) The french toast was pretty good and served with the obvious side dish which I would assume is the restaurant’s signature: fruit salad. The toast was on the softer side, which is how I prefer my toast, and it came with a really cute mini-mug to hold the syrup. Salade de saumon fumé sauvage – smoked salmon sandwich ($15) The sandwich was filled with a very generous portion of smoked salmon (very nicely smoked salmon, if I may add) and the fries came with the European side of mayonnaise instead of ketchup.         Soupe à l’oignon – French onion soup ($6)         The soup was on the less-flavourful than I would have liked, the colour itself wasn’t too dark but it was served pretty hot! There was a healthy portion of cheese, but I think it could have been baked a littleeee longer because it wasn’

Great fun. Cafe Salade de Fruits always manages to be a fun experience. The cheeky waiters are awesome.

The lunch specials are really, really well priced and at dinner the entrees can easily feed two! The regular moules et frites is a big pot of plump mussels (more than 20 tonight) in silky white wine cream sauce plus a big bowl of fries with aioli. It's helpful to ask for some bread to sop up the broth, but it's a huge meal for one person even without the bread.

Another favourite is the (large filet of) salmon with (many) shrimp sauce. There are a number of specials as well (plus table d'hote options) and the actual menu is longer than the one presently featured on the cafe website.

Good food but bad service. Table d'hôte $28 - 1. duck and pork terrine - meatloaf, i like their duck rillettes on their menu more. More creamy and less salty, 2. salmon+trout (+$2) - I like the trout better, the salmon was more salty, maybe because of the sauce. I asked to replace the mashed potato with frites. I couldn't believe they didn't give me any vegetables and a big bowl of frites. 3. blueberry tarte - best part of the night. It was a firmer rather than creamy custard.
Moules et frites with chorizo & tomato sauce $19+2 - I liked it with tomato sauce more, otherwise it was a white wine sauce. My friend said it was overcooked so they appeared to be smaller.
Chocolate Ganache $7 - gluten free gave it a funny texture, too sweet for me.
Service is bad. Don't expect any service. They gave us a table for 12 and expected us to seat for 18. It was full, maybe because there was a 8pm show next door. We waited 1/2 hour for our bills to come because they need to handwrite them.

Exceptional service every time! We had the escargot in a very fragrant garlic butter sauce and the mandatory mussels. These are plump, juicy, and fresh mussels in the most well balanced cream and white wine sauce ( or soup if you'd like to slurp it up). They also come with house made fries-- delicious as well. To finish, a blood orange sorbet that refreshed our palates with a creamy texture. Thank you for one of the best dinners in Vancouver!

Their mussels and fries is to die for, with fresh cut fries and a bountiful pot of mussels. They do eggs benny with a twist - on fresh croissant instead of english muffin.

I have heard good things about their dinner menu, so I will need to give that a try some day.

Sad about the little wooden menu going away but now the list is more complete. Service is always stellar from the French guys who endeavour to explain the specials and menu items. Food is fresh simple and delicious. I love their pasta specials with a hint of saffron, my favourite! Mussels are sometimes a hit or miss I think...the other time the every mussel was the size of my thumbnail and had sand in them bleh. Great desserts as well though I'm often too full to enjoy it properly.

Lunch or breakfast. In a french community centre...this place practically is taking it over haha

Everything is good here. Don't ask for ketchup for your frites! :) Great house-made mayo and they only take cash. Yeah, I know, even in this day in age! But oh well, it's worth it. And everyone is bilingual, so time to practice your french!

Great ambiance in the evening, but it's so much cheaper for lunch and breakie and it's tucked away so it's nice a quiet area all day long. But they are always busy.

Dinner and a play.. Go see at play at Studio 16. And before or after the play, go to dinner at Cafe Salade de Fruits! If the goat cheese-stuffed figs wrapped in prosciutto are available, be sure to have them. They are heaven. I don't like mussels but those who do apparently think these are great. Limited choices of wine, so that part of the night is easy as can be. Go when it's nice and sit on the little patio that borders the sidewalk. You might think you're in Paris.

Très bon!. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the staff friendly!

My appetizer was crab cakes - DELICIOUS. So tasty and it was cooked perfectly. The dish only came with 2 crab cakes of reasonable size on a bed of alfalfa. I WANTED MORE CRAB CAKES.

I had mussels with fries. The mussels were very delicious and I was hooked because it was my first time having mussels. The sauce that it came in, DELICIOUS! The fries were delicious as well. It reminded me of Boston Pizza's yam fries. Its dipping sauce was yummy.

I was full after the fries and mussels but my friend insisted that I have dessert. I had the cream puffs (profiterolle vanille). The ice cream in the middle (don't know if it was homemade) was creamy and the pastry part, perfect. It came with whipping cream and chocolate syrup. SO GOOD!

Definitely leave room for dessert. I will be coming back here and bringing more people!!

Tres bon, mais .... Aims high and meets its goals on the food front. But la atmosphere is ... how you say banal? At lunch it's like sitting in a badly-lit waiting room in a suburban bus station. Taking that into account more than a bit on the pricey side. Lunch for two came to $85 (with an adequate demi-carafe, true, but without dessert); one can certainly do better as to layout and dining experience at this price point. Moules just perfect, not the usual hockey pucks, but the frites are frozen, chers amis -- even if they look great and taste good with the skin on. Tres Vancouver in several departments, then ... but the food is yummy and lovingly served. The chefs deserve a better venue, and so do the patrons.

Chouette comme resto. The restaurant is cute and tucked away, you could walk by it without realizing that it's there.

The waiters are very friendly and are extremely familiar with the menu. Except there are only two of them and sometimes you have to wait a long time to order or to get the dessert menu.

The portions are small, but it's French food. I think Bistrot Bistro on 4th has better value for food. Bigger portions.

The crème brûlée was a bit tasteless and small for my liking. Very different than the ones I've had in France. However, the chocolate desserts are all very good.

I ordered the table d'hôte, with sole and shrimp as the main dish. I was expecting bigger shrimp but what I got were shrimp the size of the cocktail ones. The sole nevertheless was soft.

I had to order escargots, but there were so few of them and they weren't very tasty at all. Moreover, they arrived swimming in a bath of oil...

I was very impressed by their onion tart (although I kept thinking it was quiche). Very flavourful and fragrant, with a pleasant light texture. This restaurant has great ambience and authenticity. The French servers speak in trusting accents, you can hear their voices float as they speak the language of love. The feeling is also very homey, but you know that they mean only the best. I really enjoy it here. The vibe is what I would imagine to be a laid back evening in a French suburb. Also speaking, the food has a quality to match! It is well decorated, and they seem to be successful in creating the perfect atmosphere for a fun but intimate evening. First and foremost, something I have come to dislike is when the starting basket of bread you typically receive at restaurant is not warm and freshly baked. This is not the case at Salade de Fruits! It’s quite the opposite. The bread you will first encounter here should be fresh, hot, and oh-so-satisfying. It has been for the past 4 – or so – times that I’ve come here. It’s absolutely pleasant! So you're served this big pot of mussels. Steamed in a delicious white wine cream sauce it was great with subtle notes of garlic and spring onions. The mussels themselves were plump, tender and perfectly cooked. You get A LOT of mussels - and the sauce is pretty rich. So as good as it is, about 1/2 way through you don't feel like finishing. I would definitely recommend splitting this as an appetizer with a friend instead of eating an entire order by yourself. But if you've ever craving mussels - you would be satisfied.... and them some.

Mountains of mussels in an absolutely fantastic broth. I can taste the white wine and garlic in a perfect balance without being too creamy. After a while, I was abandoning all social constraints and drinking that stuff out of the pot (with a spoon of course - I'm not an animal... yet). A bite of tasty mussel with a bit of that broth and a piece or two of green onions = perfect bite. Or use that complimentary bread to sop up that broth! That broth is just amazing... Do you think it'd be really looked down on to bring tupperware here to take the broth home? The fries are also tasty - crispy, hot and salty - but many pieces were stubby but I don't mind when I give it a dip in the broth and they're still crunchy. This dish is so popular, a table of four each had their own pot. Should've gotten my own pot... Je regrette ma decision.

I had their daily quiche special ($10), which happened to be crab and spinach. The quiche comes with your choice of fries or a mixed greens side salad. This quiche was so good. It had a perfect light and fluffy texture and a rich eggy flavour. The combination of crab and spinach went well together. These two ingredients could potentially overwhelm the dish, but I didn’t find that was the case here and everything was well balanced. I was impressed with Cafe Salade de Fruits and I would definitely return for lunch. The food was very good and the prices are affordable. Recommen

Located inside the French Cultural Center, Salade de Fruits can be easily missed. But those fond of French cuisine and a casual bistro to dine in won’t pass up this opportunity. In fact, you will probably need to fight for elbow space with their loyal clienteles. Reservations highly recommended. The red bricks, high ceilings and even the Adventures of Tin Tin is warm and inviting. The restaurant itself, is really small in fact. Compared to Pied-â-Terre, Salade de Fruits, this casual setting is nothing less of a good meal. Owners Antoine Bonard and Balendran Rameshan runs the front end greeting customers with friendly services and a sense of humor.

No ketchup, no refills, and no credit cards.  These signs adorn the large brick wall that covers the kitchen area.  It would be easy to pass by this little bistro, located inside the French Cultural Centre on West 7th, and completely miss it.

The menus are in French, and the servers have charming French accents. I love them. I am usually served by one of two, and both are very lively and patient, helping to translate at one point the whole menu. They make innocent jokes, and make you feel at home.

I’ve heard a lot of good words about this place and have wanted to make a visit for some time. Since we were meeting Lun for brunch, I thought it was a good chance to do so. When we arrived, there were a couple people waiting already. The location was an interesting one - inside the French Culture Centre. It was a tiny little bistro that has limited seating. We were told the wait would be about 15 minutes. Luckily enough, we were able to get seated quite quickly. It was definitely a very tight seating inside in order to fit in more people. I didn'€™t mind about it because I was anticipating more on the food.

Salade de Fruits is a small little French restaurant located on West 7th right beside the French Cultural Center. Upon looking at it from the outside, it definitely doesn't look like much and it's also very hard to tell that a restaurant is even there! Th

The most interesting thing about this cafe is that it is directly connected to the community center with some seating in the corridor. It is a very small place with cozy decorations and seating. Definitely not a place to lounge around but a place to devou

Found a piece of France that was more French than the restaurants I ate at in Paris. The dinner we had at Cafe Salade de Fruits is what good back-to-basics French cuisine is all about. Cafe Salade de Fruits is tucked away on the side of Granville and West

Ordering was actually a bit… Problematic. No, it was not what was in the menu; rather it was *how* it was written in the menu. As you can see in the picture above (or not really…), everything is in French. Sure, there were a couple of things I could have
