Review Red Ginger Asian Cuisine - Vancouver

Gary Lee
My favourite restaurant in all of Vancouver! This place is a Hidden Gem. If you have never been you are really missing out. The food is excellent and the portions are huge and the food arrives so quick its incredible. Kam is the owner of this place and he is the life of the place. I will always keep coming back here. Try Everything, never had a bad dish!

We love this restaurant and should go more often. First, the food is excellent. There is free covered parking. Great service and interior decor /ambiance, all at an unbelievable price. Located on West Broadway, Red Ginger is just an unbelievable value. Update - once again what a great dining experience. For all the Vancouver historians, the owner actually had another restaurant called Kam's Singaporean on Davie Street before. We also loved the food back then and want to say to them - keep up the great work!

Great atmosphere, delicious food, good sized portions and priced right. Fast and friendly service. Apr 8 - went back for that ginger beef. Unfortunately their last day is Apr 13, 2019 and the owner is retiring.

Super great Asian restaurant ! A warm soup to prepare your stomach to an amazing flavour explosion. We shared the sweet and sour pork and the green beef curry and both were just super tasty and delicious ! Big portions to fill you up but it's not too much and when you leave the restaurant you don't feel like having eaten too much. Perfect balance ! And they offered to the customers the dessert with a smile and a Merry Christmas :) Definitely a spot where we're gonna come back often during our long stay in Vancouver ! Thanks to the team !

We had the house chili chicken which came with vegetables and we had the ginger beef. This was the first time attending this location and it is definitely on my list of favorites and the price was very reasonable. The staff was exceptionally friendly and very efficient as the food was out in less than 10 minutes and freshly cooked. This place is highly recommended by us and be sure to see the two photos that I took after we started eating.

Delicious food at an amazing value! Service was top notch and we will definitely return.

Love, love, love this place! Have been eating here for years! Kam is a wonderful, generous owner with character and a big heart! The food is delicious! Great place to take family or a large group of friends and share some amazing dishes! Great value! Love the orange chicken, the coconut rice, pad Thai, fried tofu, and the crispy spring rolls! Their lunch meal is a steal! Friendly, fun, and fantastic!

Food was amazing! First thing out of the way. Seemed to be plenty of parking behind the restaurant but we were there at a slow point. Atmosphere was very nice. Servers were very friendly. Didn't take much time for the food to come out after we ordered. Good portions, nice for sharing a couple dishes. Tasted amassing. Price was perfect for the service and meal.

I have been dining here for years, and Cam and his team never disappoint. They always go above and beyond and the food is always consistently great. HE has accommodated every request we have had and is always giving you a free "something" for coming in. LOVE CAM and LOVE his team - THANK YOU as always,
Z
Very slow service. Not written at the entrance that they take don't take credit card for under $20. Food didn't taste good. Owner/manager said he'll accept credit card for under $20 as its first time for me but added a credit card fee to the amount without telling me.

Ate here last night. It is in my 'hood and I've wanted to try it for a while. Was not disappointed. The ginger beef was about the best I've had and the chili prawns and lettuce were excellent. The host and hostess were most engaging and it looked like everyone was having a good time. It was quite busy for a Wednesday night. We also go the complimentary dessert of fried banana and ice cream. I look forward to going back and want to try everything on the menu.

We just ate here at Red Ginger me and my wife brought my son. At the end of our awesome diner the host Cam came over and engaged our son in conversation told him to eat up because dessert was on its way. He brought over a few deep fried bananas with mango ice cream and a sparkler (firework) on top. Made some jokes at our table and was gone. The desert was on the house my son was stoked. Best dining experience I have had in a long time. You don't get service like this anymore. THANKS CAM and all the Red Ginger staff.

I ordered soup over the phone. They were busy and abrupt. When I went to pick it up I provided my visa and was advised it is cash only for under $20.00 or I could pay a .50c extra charge. I advised the man this was illegal ( apparently some merchants can when checking visa website). The man got extremely rude, I placed the cash on the counter where upon he yelled at me to leave the restaurant without my soup. I will never go back as that is unacceptable from a restaurant. I believe this may have been the owner. I will take my business elsewhere to the lovely lunch place next door who are kind and friendly.
We are an English family of 3 who called in here to pick up a "takeaway" meal to take back to our nearby hotel & watch the Vancouver firework display from our balcony. We were greeted by, I presume Kam , the owner who entertained us amusingly whilst our food was being prepared, melon & water whilst we waited. We ordered a king prawn dish, lemon chicken , chicken fried rice & spring rolls. We eat a lot of good quality Chinese & Fusion dishes in Winchester ,our home City but I have to say that this was easily the best fusion " to go " meal we have ever had. The prawn & mixed vegetable dish in particular was remarkable, beautifully spiced, very fresh & a very generous portion. Kam tweeted our dishes to suit our tastes & charged us less than he could have done for our order. All in all a very enjoyable experience & fully deserving of a maximum score.
Thanks from Terry , Jensia & George Butler

I am writing because of the surprising negative reviews. I give this restaurant 4/5 because it is not trying to be a gourmet restaurant. If I were rating their lunch special when I usually come, I'd give them a 5/5. Food is tasty, plentiful and very reasonably priced. Servers are always very pleasant though they can be busy because it is popular at lunch.

The ginger chicken was excellent, and I was surprised to learn that they threw in a large bowl of soup for me to try - which turned out to be delicious. (Some type of spicy tomato bay leaf concoction). For a take out order, I was still pretty impressed with the service. Extremely friendly on the phone and in person, and free food to boot!

Red Ginger located on West Broadway and Oak is an Asian fusion restaurant that I had been meaning to try. It is close to my husband’s workplace and his coworkers get take out from them regularly. I read online that Kam, the owner of Red Ginger, formerly owned and ran “Kam’s Place” on Davie (now occupied by Banana Leaf). I had been curious about Kam’s Place before but never made the time to go there. I finally seized the opportunity to go Red Ginger when I saw that they had an Entertainment deal for BOGO free entree.
Tasty Talk
Used to really like Red Ginger about 1.5 years ago. Got take-out last night and it was horrible. Ginger beef tasted fishy, sweet and sour pork was mushy, lacking flavour, pad thai was never great (not authentic) but got worse. Spring rolls were okay. I will not go back. Dissapointed.

Vancouver has hundred’s of authentic Chinese restaurants to choose from but we also have an abundance of hybrid Chinese restaurants where they serve dishes from many different Asian countries. One such place that I love is called Red Ginger on West Broadway. Casual and comfortable, Red Ginger serves up Asian cuisine with influences from China , Malaysia and Thailand .

WORST!!! Don't go!

I'd say they are writing their own reviews. Cocktails arrived after starters. Had to remind them. Hadn't finished starters when mains arrived and wine. So cocktails and wine simultaneously.
Pad Thai was in edible. Cooked in a tomato paste. To be fair, they didn't charge for that.
Garlic prawns and vegetable - hardly any prawns and vegetable pieces were cut too big. Terrible. No time or preparation put in to dishes.

Flavor, flavor, flavor. So good, tasty, crunchy and did i mention so very flavorful. each dish with it;s own taste not just all soy etc.
and check out the owners amazing miniatures! right down to a tiny tin of whipped cream. it;s like eating at a museum

Eating in another dimension. Overall, was definitely better than we expected. Spring rolls were great, sweet and sour pork very good, pineapple rice and red chicken curry were average but still good. Definite value for money, although, the most interesting thing about going here is that it is actually kind of eerie. I think all of the people here are maybe aliens or from some strange alternate dimension. The waitress really freaks me out. Check it out for something different.

I have been twice excellent food I order with no chilli very good mixed vegtables dish with black bean sauce great ginger beef orange chicken very tasty fried vegy rice is good
The owner and his wife are charming
Service is fast
Cupon in Georgia straight $10 off
Our bill for 4. Was $57 a very good deal for the quality of the food
We will be going back again

Had lunch there the other day. VERY pleasant and prompt service. Food value exceptionally great. Looking g forward to the next time.

This was the worst food I have ever had...hands down. Avoid this place at all costs. Delivery was fast but once we opened the food we were in shock. It was so terrible looking and the taste was worse.
Yummy In My Tummy
Will not order from here again. I ordered delivery from Red Ginger which was the first and last time I will order from there. Whoever answered the phone was super nice and only charged me for two cokes rather than four. The delivery was fast and paid by credit card. I ordered sweet and sour pork which is all fat and disgusting! The veggie fried rice was good, the orange peel chicken was overpowered by ginger and the spicy tofu is nothing special. I would not recommend this place or order from here.

Great Food. I love going to the Red Ginger. The food and the service is terrific. Kam and his wife are always so friendly to everyone. I love the House Prawns, long bean, and the curries. Kam always treats my son with ice cream on the house. Very nice. I have had staff dinners there as well as just casual dinners. You can't beat it.

Marie

Great service, food, value and atmosphere. Covered parking in the back downstairs. Probably the 5th time I've been here and the first line has been consistent. Try the coconut rice with the dishes! The owner and family are as welcoming as your own good friends.
The_eugene
Mediocre Asian fusion. Nothing special.

Great Experience x2. My husband and I are staying just down the street from the Red Ginger and stopped in for dinner on Monday. It was very quiet, the service was great and the food was very tasty ...... so we decided to try it again ...... I'm usually disappointed the second time I go somewhere but NOT here. It was busy, lots of repeat customers judging by the friendly banter with staff, Food was even tastier than the first time. Everything is fresh and there is a lot of it. I thought the value was amazing ...... I will definitely be making this a regular stop for us when we are in Vancouver.
Toni
Cold and not so hot. Ordered take out tonight. it was quite pricey and not good value. the food was very low quality, fatty sweet and sour, cold and flavourless rice. it felt like things were old and just heated up, not freshly cooked to order. the chow mein was decent, and the ginger beef was cold. we asked for everything to be spicy andit was all quite bland and flavorless. After dinner my husband had tummy ache. would never order again. should stick to our usual peaceful.

Fantastic Team Lunch. I ordered in a lunch for a work event and the food from Red Ginger was a huge hit! Every dish was excellent, especially the ginger beef, and also a nice variety of meat and vegitarian options. They also threw in spring rolls as a bonus - a nice thouch. Thank you Red Ginger!

Wonderful food. Had another fantastic meal. Curry chicken and ginger beef absolutely to die for. Cam is a outgoing and humorous host and helps to make everyone comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

-----29 Sep, 2013-----

Wow...delicious. Hadn't eaten at red ginger for almost a year I was so glad to be back the food is consistenly delicious... in fact the ginger beef best ever... and the pad thai and green curry absolutely fantastic. Keep up the good cooking cam .

Not an enjoyable experience. Pro: friendly welcome.
Cons: Spring rolls were average. Pad Thai sauce was runny. Ginger beef was oily. Two other dishes were overseasoned (with MSG I suspect). My group's impression was influenced by the friendly-welcome-turned-hostile when we inquired about the buy one get one free (which is buy 2 dishes get $10 off or buy 5 and get $20 off).

Love It. I love being greeted by Kam. He and the staff know how to make small talk and joke just the right amount without being intrusive. It's such a nice and relaxed atmosphere. The food is good too, with a very healthy portion.
I go back regularly.
Keep up the good work!

My tongue is burning. I'm working a 12-hour midnight shift at the psycho ward, and my choices for dinner are a final go-round of the home-made macaroni salad with tuna and hard-boiled egg that I've been eating for a week, or getting something take-away. You already know which way I went, because I'm writing a review on a restaurant's page. We have Red Ginger menus scattered all around our nurse's break room because it's so close to the hospital. I thought it was time I gave it a go.

I'm always curious about Singaporean food, so I went with "Singapore fried behoon." It's a mish-mash of thin rice noodles, long strips of onion that still have some pungent bite -- I better brush my teeth before I talk to any patients! -- along with shreds of fried egg, almost-unnoticeable bean sprouts and a decent scattering of smallish shrimp. Those could have been cooked a few seconds more for my taste -- they were a little more transluscent than I like them -- but that's just a personal preference. The best part of the dish was the sprinkling of green curry powder (that's what the menu says -- I hope it's not MSG) that gives this dish a subtle burn on the tongue. It's OK -- I like a hot tongue.

Other reviews have mentioned the owner. There was a stocky, cheery guy at the register checking me out, and I asked "Are you Kam?" He said "Yes" and joked with me a bit about hospital stuff. I appreciate when a restaurateur makes a total stranger feel at ease, instead of letting cross-cultural coldness stand in the way. That human touch is what would keep me coming back for more fire-tongue.

NOT WORTH IT! Bad service! Food r below standard and not authentic! Portion size r being skim down due to buy one get one! Do not try their curry dishes, super spicy !!!!
Ryan JG Morgan
It's good but don't eat the curries for lunch. Their version of coconut milk curries are not up to Thai standards.
Chuck
People aren't kidding about the portion sizes. I ate leftovers for a week.
Food was overall good and host was super friendly.
The pad thai. It's more like sweet and sour noodles with shrimp and peanuts. Not my idea of pad thai but I guess some might find it ok.
Kerren Cru
Great Food. I go here 2-3 times a week for lunch, it is so delicious. For $8 you get huge portion of food, salad, rice, soup. The dishes have loads of fresh veggies. I recommended the Kai Pad and Sweet and Sour Pork or Long Bean chicken.

The service is amazing and take a look in the kitchen, so clean! They leave it wide open for the public to see which is nice.
Phoking BEAST
The service is excellent but the food is very mediocre, green chicken curry had no taste whatsoever, we asked them to take it back and add flavour, they added a few chillis and that really changed nothing, it tasted like spicy green water, the pad Thai, was probably the worst ie ever had in my life. Tasted like noodles with bland ketchup. Again, excellent service, poor poor food, first time customer, and last time.

Amazing food and lots of it, awesome service, highly recommend eating here, won't be disappointed.
The Transformer
I really wanted to like it, but first they polluted their food with Japanese MSG, then the second order had a hair (which they offered to switch out but not to take off the bill, then I realized the cauliflower was a bit moldy. Such a shame.

Food was off. We both got hill the day after : ( it was a sad experience....

The food here is so good. The staff is super friendly. The portion sizes are huge, and the prices are cheap. This place is the best.

Kam is Back!. So glad he opened a new place...missed him when he left his place on Davie. Have dinner here about once a month with friends. Good food, good atmosphere, great host!

Great service. Amazing owner. He's very funny and pleasant. Great food and great location. I'm glad Kam is back!

I've tried a ton of Asian fare in the area and few compare to red ginger. The food is superb, the prices very affordable and the service is amazing. The owner is absolutely charming and at Christmas even gave us free spring rolls! This is our new favourite neighborhood spot.

I love Red Ginger as I was a loyal fan of Kams Place. I am addicted to the singapore fried rice, its simple yet so delicious. Everything on the menu is great. Nothing bad to say about this place, good food, good prices and the owner is awesome. Always service with a smile

Excellent food, wonderful service, and LARGE portion sizes...you won't be disappointed!!

Leo. Was there last evening (Sat. Oct 22, 2011) and ordered
the Red Curry Chicken which the menu describes as Singapore Curry with coconut flavour.
What came was a shock to me. It is not Singapore Curry, does not taste curry at all, no coconut cream, but corn starch to make it creamy. It was absolutely disgusting and horrible.
Being from Singapore who has eaten lots of curries in one's lifetime, this restaurant cannot fool me with that horrible dish and called it Red Curry. Only those diners who never eaten Singapore curries before would not know the difference.
The prices are low, but food........totally lousy ! Would not
dine in there again.
Those readers who wants to taste REAL SINGAPORE FOOD, GO TO HAWKER'S DELIGHT ON MAIN STREET
(@ East 26th Ave).

Can't Stop Eating!!!. I usually reserve myself when I go out on the town. But every time I go to red ginger I glutton myself out. Everytime I have to be carried out because i've eaten too much.

I've been to Kams on Davie. It was also amazing. The original owner of Kams, I'm happy to say is none other than the owner of Red Ginger.

I walk in and it never fails, I'm warmly greeted and seated. Their food is delicious and nicely priced. The atmosphere is amazing with very warm colours surrounding you.

I'll be back again and again... Their food is just too good to pass up. Its rare to come across a restaurant that is genuinely interested in the service and not the money. They want to give you amazing food and a wicked environment to dine and it shows.

Dine here and don't forget to say hi to the man who is all smiles when you walk in.
Lilsweetie
Same menu as Kam's. The menu here is exactly the same as the old Kam's on Davie. I love the new decor and new location. Parking is so much easier to find.

As usual, incredible value and delicious fresh, hot, food served incredibly fast. Our favorites: orange chicken and black bean chicken. Kam is so friendly and talkative. You must also check out the miniature food displays handmade by his wife. They are exquisite.

RED GINGER!. Alright, so my family and I have been touring Vancouver Canada. We've been to several restaurants and the first place The Keg was top price for average food. Now on our last night in Canada we went to a new place called Red Ginger. I was impressed by the restaurant to say the least. We ate a copious amounts of food! It was all very reasonably priced and in Vancouver, for vacationers like us, that was hard to find. Not only was the food quite delicious, but the waitresses were very attentive and whom I believe to be the owner was not only attentive, but entertaining as well. The decorations were fun and the atmosphere was inviting and friendly. I recommend this restaurant to locals and newcomers.
Veggieburger
NOTHING IS VEGETARIAN Unfortunately I cannot eat here. The whole kitchen is cross contaminated with meat utensils. The soup and curry contains chicken broth.
Jetta
Delicious. So happy that Kam is back , even if it s under a new name. The decor here is beautiful and as soon as you walk in Kam is there to greet you. The portions of food was beyond what other Asian restaurant serve. Better service then Banana Leaf.
Second Stomach
I was reasonably full and surprisingly had some leftovers – this is what I ended up bringing home.

If you remember Kam's Place on Davie, you'll be happy to know that they reopened on West Broadway under the new name… Red Ginger.

It seems like this is a family-run affair and it’s doing pretty well!

Kam's closed after being on Davie for years but the new incarnation is now on West Broadway, serving much of the same fare that was at the downtown location. Although I'd only read about the old location, I was excited to try this place. Let me first apologize for the overly yellow tones on all the food photos. The Torch has a horrendous flash, so despite what you see here, I didn't have curry everything! The first thing we got were the Spring Rolls - these are filled with vegetables and vermicelli and served with a slightly sweet plum sauce. Flaky skin, piping hot filling, it's exactly what a spring roll should be. Get some hot chilli sauce on the side for an additional punch of heat. Another go-to dish is their Lettuce Wrap which we got with beef, but you can also get it with chicken. Mixed in with a lot of diced veggies, this dish almost feels healthy. The hoisin sauce is a good addition and serves to hold the diced filling together. Everyone has their own way of rolling a lettuce w
