When I am in the Davie Area, I go here. I really like their Sashimi because the size is generous and fish is fresh. The other items on the menu are also great and it is not expensive. They have good Udon and sushi rolls too. It is a hole in the wall place and my favourite for Sashimi.
I had a real hankering for fast sushi while I was downtown. I must say though, the service at this location is by far the best I've had. The fraser locations service has gone down alot with the old lady at the till. I was greeted promptly and I would definitely come back for the service. The rolls are consistent. I ordered the house roll and it satisfied my craving.
This has to be one of the best Japanese dining experience I've had so far. The restaurant itself is minimal but the food and sake makes up for it big time. No bookings allowed and queues usually go out the door. Can't wait to return to this little gem.
I ordered take out a few days ago and service was very prompt and courteous. The restaurant was full, a good sign. Will definitely order or come here again!
This place is my go to for sushi in vancouver, its become a tradition with my sports team to go there and order their massive house rolls (10$ and your stuffed) and see if anyone can actually finish it! Haha definitly recommend
Fantastic! Great food for so cheap, and big portions too! This is where I ate when I was a student!
Best tamago!. Still prefer the Cambie location, but had it last wed. as it's a bit smaller but the same goodness and sweetness.
Loooong line ups. If u have the patience to wait it out, u'll be happy u did. the decor in this place is a lil run down but it gives it a homey feel to it. the sushi/sashimi portions are huuuge so make sure u don't over order....just order as u go. great place for a bite before taking a scenic stroll along english bay.
Best fake crab in town. "Best fake crab in town" might seem like a dubious honour to earn, but trust me - when I've been out of town and craving cheap sushi, it's the fake crab in Samurai's California roll that I dream about. What the heck is in there and why is it so delicious? I don't know, but go try it for yourself and see if you don't develop your own hankering for it. You will also become adept at the art of eating the fillings first, pulling them out with chopsticks so as to be able to stuff the rest of the roll into your mouth, and at hacking giant pieces of nigiri apart with chopsticks so as to be able to eat them at all. These may be unorthodox techniques of sushi dining, but in the case of Samurai's giant rolls, the end deliciously justifies the means.
The best sushi for your dollar in all of Vancouver (yes, that is saying a lot). I like this place so much I bought the t-shirt.
Tasty sushi. I do a take out today, nice miso soup, but i hope i can get more tofu in it. and Cali roll take out, $3.5 for 6 pieces, each piece is 2cmX5-6cm size. and it delicious. must go back. and it japanese own japanese restaurant, nice staff. come back soon.
Decent Place. Sushi is okay and big!
but there are plenty of choices in the menu... Most of them are pretty D.
Awesome. Always fast friendly service. Nothing fancy but affordable huge portions. Love coming to this place. Always stuffed for 10 to 15 max per person.
Hi !!. I was so impressed when i went to there~ your staffs are very kind and food was so delicous and flash~ i've been there three~ I always tell my frineds that samurai is the best japanese restaurant in Vancouver~ the sushi is very big size and price is not expensive so I could enjoy there~ I always support your restaurant ~ thank u~ see u again~
Affordable and fast service. Not the best sushi out there but decent and the prices are great.
Simple and satisfying. I really Samurai because it is quick, inexpensive, and tasty. Their rolls are pretty simple. They don't have as many varieties of the newer places, but what they do offer is great value. I especially love the huge portions of salmon sashimi, the alaska roll, and the yam tempura roll.
They offer takeaway which is a great and fast option too. You really can't go wrong!
Hole in the wall kind of good. Some good japanese here for sure
Huge Portions!. Very good value for your money. The sashimi and rolls are really big. This place gets packed quickly, so it would be best to reserve ahead of time.
Good value for money paid. Sashimi pieces are huge! Beef sashimi and oysters were ok...could be fresher... Not as good as other places but you also pay more elsewhere. Stick with the sushi and sashimi and you won't go wrong
Samurai Dinner Combination C. Samurai is fast but not fancy by any means. And for great value, order the Dinner Combination C. It includes the 5 (generously sized) piece sashimi appetizer, sunomono, green salad, miso soup, vegetable tempura, sprouts/carrot/broccoli and prawn teriyaki. All for under $13 the last time I checked!
Best value sushi in the world - enormous portions of sashimi at budget prices - love this place if u eat lots!
Good bang for your buck. If value is what you're looking for, this place has decent quality for lotsa quantity!
Sugoi!. Great place to eat sushi and other Japanese dishes. Friendly staff and great food at a low cost.
Love this place. I was shocked when I read a bad review of this place- the writer must have been there on a bad night!
When I moved here (10 years ago), this was one of those little treasures that my then-boyfriend and I loved. The servings are HUGE. Yes, it can be difficult to eat, as I know that 'proper' sushi is supposed to be eaten in one bite. Not possible with this place. I find it hard to fault them for that, though, when it's so darn tasty.
My then-boyfriend, now hubby (aka Mr. Man) still go there when we're in the area, although since moving to Bby, we make the trip more rarely. The place is tiny, tiny, tiny. When I lived in the West End we used to prefer to call in for takeout then waltz past the folks waiting for a table. Now we just go in off-hours so we don't have to wait.
The sushi chefs and waitstaff are Japanese. In a city where many of the Japanese restaurants are run by non-Japanese people, I like this. Yes, I understand that you don't have to *be* Japanese in order to make good Japanese food - but I also know that my friends in Japan say that there is a Japanese sensibility that demands excellence, and I suppose that's what I'm commenting on. A few years ago, when I went to get takeout, I mentioned to the sushi chef that it was Mr. Man's birthday, and that he loved salmon sashimi, and he instantly 'carved' me a rose out of salmon, with a roe centre. Gotta love that attention to detail.
We went a few weeks ago, to get our fix before the Olympics crowds scared us away from downtown. It was Mr. Man's birthday, so he ordered whatever he wanted - sashimi AND chicken teryaki AND sushi. The tiny little waitress almost giggled every time he added more. She wasn't wrong - he couldn't finish it all. I ordered an avacado roll and an order of kappa maki and could barely finish it. Considering that was about $6 worth of food, that's not a bad deal. The avacado was perfect (wow, am I tired of places with crunchy avacadoes, warm rice, or soggy cucumbers). The rolls were great. I snagged a bite of Mr. Man's chicken teryaki and was happy to find that it tasted like real chicken teryaki - decent flavour, not a lot of fat, real chicken texture. We've been to so many places that have chicken pounded to sad textureless mush, that this was a lovely reminder. Mr. Man's sushi and sashimi were things of beauty. First of all, they were huge - not a teeny little piece of fish on rice. Second of all, they were fresh (I may not eat raw fish, but I know when raw fish smells a little off - this stuff was great!!), and Mr. Man was happily chewing on sashimi that actually kept him busy. The rice was nondescript - with is a HUGE compliment - that's what sushi rice is supposed to be! In my humble opinion, it's meant to float gently in the background, bringing forward the flavours of the food it's carrying. Bad restaurants make you notice the rice by texture (too chewy or mushy), taste (too much vinegar), or temperature (oh, those sad, sad places with warm rice sushi). This place had that lovely blend of flavours that makes your mouth happy.
Is this the perfect place to eat? I suppose not. It's tiny. That means you're privy to the conversations of those around you - not normally an issue, but the last time we were there, we were about 2 feet away from a couple trying to impress each other on what seemed to be a first date (loud, bad, I won't go into details). It made me long for the days of take out. That being said, for 'bang for your buck', this is a darn good place. Takeout, here we come!
This has got to be the only sushi house I know of that serve's sashimi piece's the size of 2 finger's...get there early as the line up can be a while or just head to the bar...no waiting for that
Samurai rocks. Got take out from here a few times. The size of the portions really are incredible. Enough to confuse some sushi beginners I've brought along.
Walking back to the office with take out from Samurai always makes me look like a pig too, as they like to put split their lunch combos to fill 5 separate containers. The quality is still there and is one of the better spots for lunch in the area.
Definitely recommend going here if you’re looking for great sushi, big portions and value!
A simple menu done well, a nice wine list and great atmosphere make for a fun weekend meal or delicious lunch. Our somellier, although new to Pizzeria Mozza, was knowledgeable and kept us entertained all meal. Priya’s lessening hatred of fish allowed us to order an Italian classic of Baccalà or salted cod, made with a twist. Creamy, breaded, fried goodness with a rich aioli to match. The pizzas were good as always, although Priya’s squash blossom pizza came out cold. However, our waiter was more than happy to provide a fresh
Giant Sashimi! Samurai Sushi is probably one of the first sushi restaurants that started the giant sushi trend. My friends and I came for dinner because we haven't been in a while. On the table we had a full order of Salmon Sashimi , chopped scallop , spicy salmon, negitoro, dynamite and unagi rolls . Those are just my friend's orders, I had a Chirashi don with a side of tako yaki because it was on special that day. The Chirashi don was very filling. It had an array of sashimi such as salmon, tuna, saba, red snapper, shrimp, octopus and scallops. Between the seafood and the rice, there were some pickled shitaki mushrooms and some sweet Japanese rice seasoning. This was really nice because not a lot of Japanese restaurants do this. Giant Sashimi, giant sushi! This is probably one of the best places to get your sashimi cravings fixed, because a full order of a salmon sashimi is pretty much equivalent of half of the salmon itself. And as for the rolls, they will definitely fill a su
