The chickem momos (dumplings) are so good as well as the chicken sherpa. Always love this place
First time and it was delicious! Fast service, we had the goat curry and the grilled lamb, both fantastic, steamed momos and chicken wings were also very tasty
Awesome delicious tender taste!!! They make something for me wich isn't on the menu, and regular food from menu is super tasty as well.
Only one problem here but only if you have sensitive nose and have not lived in Vancouver area-it's weird smell, like wet mold smell. In Vancouver and all cities around this smell in every second restaurant and shops UNFORTUNATELY:( I think people who lived here get used to it and it's not a problem for 9 out of 10 visitors.
The food was wonderful, the staff more so! I tried an off menu item, yak, was very impressed!
The food here is delicious!! The customer service is also great!
Yes. We,re Eating Again.

When we saw that Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen had prepared a Picnic 2 Go for DOV, we were all in. Gurkha is located on Davie Street where you can't miss them, beside the Shoppers Drug Mart. We gathered up 2 bags of picnic and walked down the hill to Sunset Beach, the perfect dining room. There we took stock of our little feast which cost only $20 each for the two of us. For appetizers, we chose one order of Chicken Momos and one order of Vegetarian Momos. While momos can be a pretty sturdy dumpling, we found these to be pleasantly chewy and with a tasty filling. The dips, of course, round out the experience, one being cilantro based, a sort of milder curry and one fairly spicy sauce. We chose Chicken Noodles as one of our mains. There was a lot of this! Tasty saucy noodles and a decent amount of chicken and vegetables. This was not too spicy and seemed like an Asian leaning sauce which was rich and had some depth! Next was the Chicken Curry. Again this was a generous portion with rice. I always whine about takeout butter chicken being all sauce but this was the opposite. There was a little bit of heat in this delicious curry and was great with Basmati rice. One of these mains also came with lentils which always make me happy. Finally 2 tasty and refreshing desserts. One was Coconut Rice Pudding which I could eat all day long. The other was Cheese Pistachio Lush. I had never heard of this before but apparently, it is a layered dessert based on a cheesecake? I'm not quite sure as its hard to Google a definition without ending up at a cosmetics store. The picnic came with a soft drink and we ended up with a lot left over for the next day. They have a comfortable little dining room and lots of patio space at GHK where you can dine a little remote from the noise of Davie Street. This was our best of all 3 of our DOV experiences and highly recommend that you give it a try.
Reasonably priced small cozy place to eat in West End. Food was good though you can’t expect it to be perfect. Staff were courteous. The food was served in no time.
I think this place has wonderful food and I'm glad there are some Himalayan options in Vancouver. Their curries are very flavorful and actually spicy when you ask them to make it spicy. The daal-bhaat masu is a great option for a good introduction to Himalayan cuisine. Prices are expensive, but the food is worth it. Nice dessert menu as well. I think their momos are not very good, a bit too dry and lacking in the moisture and juices that good momos usually have.
Great curries at a reasonable price. The meat is super tender and the sauce is well seasoned. Not a fan of the Phuraula though, which are similar to falafel balls made with lentil instead of chickpea, they are super dense and flavorless.
One-liner: A unique Himalayan restaurant tucked above the bustle of Davie Street
Highlight: Himali Chicken
Recommended for: Indian cuisine lovers looking to branch out
Would I go back? Yes.

The food here is original and tastes good. I also liked the cocktails we ordered. Service was excellent, as well. All in all, I can hardly think of a reason to not recommend this place!
I’m new at this whole taking photos thing. I’m all about writing posts and talking about food in what is likely mind numbingly boring detail to most people, but other than a point-and-shoot I bought when I graduated over a decade ago, I’ve never really been much of a photographer. So when I finally acquired what I consider a super fancy DSLR camera half a year ago, I just assumed the problem was solved. Obviously this was a magical contraption that would take fabulous photos of food – even in dark light – without me having to do anymore more than point the camera in the right direction and press a button, right? Unfortunately, as the pictures in most of my posts can attest, this obviously wasn’t the case. I really need to take a food photography class….or any photography class really. It’s getting embarrassing.
Awesome outdoor seating. I really like this place. the food was delicious and affordable. the service was fast and friendly. the outdoor seating in the back is awesome. i will be back.
The decore had a peaceful, warm and beautiful ambiance, with a delicious aroma in the air. I came in expecting poor service thanks to some of the reviews on USpoon, however I was pleasantly surprised. Our waitress graciously greeted us and was very helpful in choosing menu items with us. The food was delicious, my one complaint was that it was quite pricey for the serving size but still filling. I would definitely come back and recommend this restaurant to anyone who asks - or doesn't!
I'm half Nepalese. I loved the food. Amazingly tasty blend of spices. The goat curry sauce was excellent, I ate all of it with my rice and roti! The chai creme brule came flaming to the table. Aside from the impressive presentation, it was so delicious!! I will definitely come back.
Their special that day was Yak meat Momos; dumplings that you dip in curry or chutney-like sauces. Lots of vegetarian options and the spices are delicate; not too intense. Loved the quality and the prices!
This place is quite nice. Himalayan food is similar to Indian except its milder. I really enjoyed their pot stickers and had the sampler meat dish.
Definitely would come back again, The Works was fantastic, and even though the desert that came with it wasn't sweet, i couldn't help but love it.
Excellent food. Subtle spices, well balanced. Excellent friendly service.
Great food here !. We wanted something special for diner . Boy did we find what we were looking for ! Service was A1 , and the food even better. We are on our way back soon, and are bringing a small group with us .
Authentic Nepali food!. We've always been disappointed in the lack of Nepali cuisine in Canada until we found Gurkha! In fact, we recently moved from Toronto to Vancouver and this is the first time we've encountered authentic Nepali cuisine. We had the Kothey Momos, the Sekuwa chicken, Daal Bhat Maasu, and Himali Chicken and it was all delicious.
Go now!
Dined at this place on Saturday last week. Clean and nice ambience. Loved the flavor n spices of the goat curry, sherpa chicken, daal, machha tarkari, momos and lamb skewer. Appies on the platter was awesome too. We were six of us and we each had to pay about 35 bucks drink n dessert inclusive, very reasonable. Can't wait to go back again. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for fresh n good food.
The food is super fresh with excellent flavor. Momos are the best I've had. Service prompt & friendly. The chef came out to chat too 5 stars!!
Great food and service! A hidden jem!
First time dining and first impression was a very accommodating staff.
Tasted both vegetarian and meat steamed Momos. At a buck a piece I will only recommend the meat as they are heartier and tastier than the vegetarian version.
Our table ordered three different dishes and they were all tasty and spicy. I thought the $21 mixed dinner was over priced for what you get. The idea of a salad lays on the tray to utterly destroy any semblance of complete meal. If they could improve the salad it would make this entree worth the money as the chicken and Dahl were very good. I'm not a big fan of lamb, but it too was good although all three were quite small portions. This tray was shared,so the tiny roti that came with it was not near enough for two to enjoy with the curries.
A week flavored chai should be improved to make it a better all round dinner.
I will return based on the many dishes I would like to try as well as for the friendliness of the staff.
Really happy we checked it out!. Didn't want to trek far so we decided on Gurkha and it's a new favourite! Really good appy's (Taas and steamed veggie dumplings) and shared the chicken curry and the pan fried meat dumplings as a main. Everything was flavourful and not greasy or overly spicy (though you specify your spice levels and we went for mild). We shared the nepalese milk/pistachio dessert, which was awesome. Service very welcoming and the chef even came out later and did a walk around to see that everyone was happy. Will definitely return!
What A Great Spot On Davie !. Stuck in Vancouver for three months, so I'm making the best of it via the restaurants in town. I have now been to sixteen different establishments, and easily the best has been Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen. It is the only restaurant I have revisited, and I plan on going more. Once you try Taas as an appetizer, you will be hooked too. I have had the momo's, sherpa chicken, goat stew, and the vegetarian curry dinner special. The flavors the chef creates are so deep. You don't just take a bite of food and swallow. You enjoy the layered tastes, the different textures in the bite, the spice in the dish. The flavors, while slightly familiar, were very new to me.
Not only is the food stellar, the service is fantastic. They are patient, informative, and helpful. The second time I went, it was quite early for dinner. The chef actually came out and explained the dishes to me and allowed me to choose the spice level of my liking. I know once it got busy he wouldn't be able to do that but him being so aware of his customers was great to see.
Please, do yourself a favor. Don't walk by or ignore this great spot to eat. It is treat to find a new place that is so in touch with what makes a successful restaurant. Fabulous food, great service staff, good value.
PS You have to try the Taas !!
Charming place! Loved the food we had temzing momos and Maasu Bhojan (The Works). Great service, beautiful patio. Such a peaceful spot amidst crazy Davie St.
Great experience!. The experience at Gurkha Kitchen was excellent. We had the Chatpate (chickpeas, potato) for a starter - a cold dish that was unique and very flavourful. There are lots of vegetarian options. We had Momos (dumplings), both boiled and fried - both were very good. We also had a dish that contained potatoe and black eyed peas, which was excellent - you can request the level of "spicy-ness" that you want. The basmati rice and roti were not to be missed.
The staff was welcoming and made suggestions about different menu items. Prices were very reasonable.
Do not miss this restaurant! They also have a nice little patio in the back
Had the pleasure to sample this new place on Davie, super friendly, nice place and most importantly of all, tasty! I had the goat curry and my wife had a bamboo shoot veggie thing. The pilau rice was the best I've ever tasted, which is saying something as a curry addicted Brit. Jon
Deliscously flavourful. Great Flavour

Overall, a great dining experience where the food has flavour. I certainly recommend people go there for a meal.
We went to Gurkha for a change of scenery from the usual fare on Davie street. The food was excellent because the food was very flavourful and the flavours were quite distinct. It was a nice change to have food that was not overly westernized.
We ordered the Kathmandy Sekuwa for as an appetizer. The chicken is definitely spicy, but has the distinct benefit of being flavourful. I am not a fan of spice for the sake of spice and this dish was delicious. Overall, the Sekuwa was succulent and full of flavour.
We had the potato salad with beaten rice. The salad had a very distinct and pleasant taste.
The two entrees we tried were the Paalungo (spinach and potato in a seed sauce) and the Gorkhali Khasi (a goat stew with rice). Both were deliciously flavourful and well cooked.
We also tried Lassi, basically a yogurt and mango smoothie - very tasty, excellent texture, best saved for desert, but still not overly sweet.
Criticisms: The rice was either a bit old or of insufficient quality. Since the restaurant is new, I expect the rice will be fresher when the restaurant picks up more business. The tomato chutney was also lacking in flavour - but the whole wheat roti was a nice change from the white flour flat breads you usually get.
Lastly, the venue itself: The restaurant is very pleasant and simple. It was nice to dine in a restaurant where the TVs are not on in every corner and the ambient music is quiet.
A few days ago I had the pleasant opportunity to eat out at Gurkha – Himalayan Kitchen in Vancouver, BC. Not too many places serve himalayan food, so I jumped at the opportunity to come here when I saw their deal on Groupon. The best way for me to describe himalayan food is to mix traditional chinese and indian food together – the outcome is most delicious! I came to Gurkha during the afternoon. They are only open for lunch for 2 hours (12-2) during the day so plan wisely if you plan on coming here. Inside it is pleasantly decorated, but a bit dark. My server was a friendly woman who was very knowledgeable with regards to the menu and answered all my questions perfectly. I ordered chicken momos (dumpling…must try), kathmandu sekuwa (meat skewers), phuraula (lentil patties), gorkhali khasi (goat), gurkha pulau (rice), and a tingmo (steamed bread). All the orders were absolutely delicious. The chef did an amazing job with the spices; the meat was tender, especially the goat; the rice was full of colour and flavour; the bread was so fluffy and chewy; and the dumpling were simply fun to eat. On the other hand, the lentil patties tasted a bit dull – they reminded me of bagels, but more dense with less flavour. The momos too were a bit (Just a bit) of a disappointment – Yes, they were delicious and the wrapping was the most beautiful wrapping that I have ever seen on a dumpling, but the dipping sauces were lacking flavour. The same dipping sauces were used for the Sekuwas and the Phuraulas as well; however, the Sekuwas were so wonderfully marinated and spiced I did not need the sauces to enjoy the dish :).
Service I like :) Exceptional service from the waiter who may also be the owner just because he was very attentive. We came 30 minutes before the lunch hour closes but he did not even hint to us about having to close for lunch like most places would do nowadays. Even though the restaurant was busy, the waiter made sure to check on us occasionally. Best part is that when I left my phone here, he actually came outside in the rain to return it to me :D. Dalai Lama Momos (deep-fried) I like :) These were really good. It was vegetarian, but quite meaty and filling. My second favourite tofu dish (second to The Reef's Mo-Ca Burger with Jerk Tofu ). Palpali Paneer Don't Like :( Too creamy and lacking in flavour. Was similar to Shahi Paneer, but definitely not as good. Tibetan Bun I don't like :( I was really expecting more from this bun, but it was just bland and slightly sweet. Kind of like the buns you can get at the Chinese bakeries here, but not as good. Will I be back? Yes. I'd love to
There is a cosy restaurant on top of a store in the middle of the West End. It is called Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen , Nepal style food made with fresh spices from Nepal by the most pleasant Nepalese owners and servers. Line ups are a standard at lunch, but a more civilized 1:30 pm lunch meant we had the place to ourselves and being able to not only enjoy the food but detailed food discussions with the servers. A sampler of appetizers spiced us up to start. This included Kathmandu Sekuwa (chicken skewers), Chatpate (the Nepal style chat with rice crisps and chickpeas) and Piro Shrimp. You could not get something more unique than this Chatpate . Rather than limiting ourselves, we capitalized on the lunch special of three curries and ended up trying five dishes. - Paalungo; fresh spinach dish with herbs, not creamy as the Indian version - Aalu-Kaauli; the cauliflower and potatoes - Sherpa Chicken ; Nepal's version of Chicken curry But my favourites and the more unique and authentic dishes
