Review Gringo - Vancouver

Benedek
Cozy place with great food and interesting cocktails. The staff is really nice too. Be careful with the hot sauce, it is Mexican spicy, not European spicy (they also sell it in a bottle so you can take some flaming hot goodness with you). The washroom is also quite funny, you need to carry a huge sign with you to open the door, we loved it. The street might not look inviting, but I can assure you this place is well worth a visit!

Good time and good vibes. Our server Jess was lovely, and gave us the perfect recommendations for food and a drink. Definitely would come back again for some late night tacos and drinks. I preferred the pork tacos over the austin(beef). Also would of never known it was located in middle of a alley.

Such a little hidden gem of a place! Food was delicious, staff were so friendly and the atmosphere was great. Lovely little dig down an alley, which gave it a quirky feel. All of our party enjoyed their food, and I liked the relaxed dining environment. If you're looking for somewhere affordable yet delicious for Mexican cuisine, this is your place! I'm also a vegetarian and they had tasty veggie options!

Great food, quirky and fun vibe! Attentive and friendly staff. I have been a few times and always look forward to going back. They also have a margarita bucket and cocktails come with little candies. Literally nothing to not love about this place!

What a vibe!!! From the music to the decor, everything felt so intentional and well curated. My friend had a spiked michelada, I had a bourborita - both were fantastic. So well balanced and delicious. Cole was friendly and enthusiastic and our tacos were fresh and tasty. Will definitely be back on our next visit to Van.

This tiny tacos bar was a little bit hard to find, located in a narrow sketchy alley. We tried many of their tacos and the brisket was our favourite. It was super juicy, flavorful, and wrapped with corn-style tortilla. The Mexican rice was okayish and the guacamole was good. Super friendly staff that make you comfortable, but gets supra busy (the tiny shop was full when we visited). The burritos and drinks were also delicious!

Its definitely a place for cheap eats in Gastown...however there are other places that taste better unfortunately. I understand why its super busy...definitely caters towards a younger rowdy type of crowd..it was so loud in there server got our order wrong and since there's only 2 people working their always on the go...he came back to pick up our playes then spilled taco juice on my boyfriend...lol i think that was where we were both so done

I love everything about this place, from the great tacos to the sketchy blood alley hidden location that makes it feel very local, to the amusing decor. And the staff are great, super friendly. If I ever opened a taco shop, it would basically be this place. Only complaint is no more fish tacos, but cheap beer makes up for it. 😁 If you've been to the well known chain taco places, and not here, you owe it to yourself to drop in and get some brisket tacos asap.

Loved it, Amazing hidden gem ! A bit slow in food but if you get some chips and a drink you’ll be good while you wait for food! Which by the way food is real good too, Totally recommended!

Damn amazing. Great food, great service, doorman was really friendly. Not super expensive for a quick bite after a night out. Would definitely recommend to my friends!

Best tacos ever. The brisket one is my fave. Their hot sauce is great as well! Cheap beer and great food, what more can you ask for?!

This place blew every expectation I had out of the water!! I went back twice in one weekend! ❤️ Such good food, amazing drinks, but honestly the staff are incredible! They are so attentive and hilarious and they learn your name (and use it!) and just do all the little things that make your experience go good to fantastic definitely my new favourite restaurant and can't wait to keep bringing new people for their first time!!

I love how they want to know you by name! Best service and tacos in the city hands down!!! I was in Van for 2 days and we went twice:) you must go. It's worth the wait in line!

Love this place. Hot dogs, nachos and beer are all just the bomb. Our server was chris. He was someone I wanted to hang out with, instead of have him serve me. What a dope place!

Great food. The brisket was amazing. Went for lunch with work colleagues...need to back for drinks!!

Great find! The tacos were fantastic and who doesn’t love drinking from a pail!!

We came all the way from Sweden to eat tacos at Gringo. 'Nuff said. They were amazing, especially the smoked pork butt and slow cooked brisket!

Call me low brow and maybe you’d be right but I just want to be happy and there is no way I’m not happy when I’m at Gringo Gastown. A favourite of mine for the past 5 years at least, I will recommend this little taco bar to anyone who is here for a good time. Mis amigos, if you’re looking for authentic tacos or real deal Mexican cuisine, than you have stepped into the wrong place but you should still pull up a stool and stay awhile. Order yourself a Bourbarita because juicy watermelon and bourbon is refreshing and you only live once. Also, it comes with tasty tasty gummies and you have nothing to lose.

It is a very good option if you want to have cheap drinks along with tasty food.
Me and my friends were really happy after visiting this place
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
Although there is bar seating along the windows, no one comes to Gringo for the view. This is especially true now that full demolition is going on across the alley in front of them. Actually, the teardown was kind of a cool old brick building. It makes me sad but hey, people need to live somewhere. Gringo is located on Blood Alley by the way, which neither got its name from abattoirs or executions. I eventually overcame my inclination to fall off the stools and we got seated at the window (not for the view as mentioned previously). We ordered some tacos from our enthusiastic server who was very good at remembering our names. He also gave good ordering advice. The menu is short at Gringo including some bowls, burritos etc. We came for the tacos and were not sorry. We started with tortilla chips and some very good guac. Chips are not house-made but they were warmed and proved to be adequate vehicles for the dip. The tacos arrived, one of each that they offer. Four-inch double corn tortillas were a good start and each was generously filled. There were the usual suspects; ground beef, brisket, pulled chicken, pork, poached pollack (which fooled me into thinking that I was eating ceviche) and surprisingly, jackfruit. The toppings varied from pickled onions or jalapenos to fried onions, salsa and cracklings. A decent feed of tacos for $3 each. I expect that the main attraction at Gringo for most people are the libations. A full bar offering beer and various Margherita's is probably the perfect companion to a taco (or visa versa). Despite being chronic teetotalers we enjoyed Gringo and its relentless 80s theme including song after song which triggered old memories and anecdotes.

Total dive! Brisket taco on the menu so I had to try it out and I don't regret it. I love their brown bagging of their drinks. Played the greatest hits of the 90s the whole time there. Kitschy as hell, down an alley, surrounded by parking garages. If you don't know about it, you should go find it.

Small place, but hey..it's a good food!

Craving of mexican food in vancouver, and we ended up trying the restaurant called 'Gringo'.
In Gringo, you could have your own Taco selections with varieties.
This is a small restaurant, but many people like it, so you will get some line in a dinner time.
The price is affordable per person and the portion is good to feed your appetite.
Enjoy the bright pink neon, pink flamingos with the 90s music, and you could grab beer in cheap price.
We enjoyed the quality of the food and had a warm welcome from the restaurant.
Must a try restaurant if you are in vancouver! Selamat Makan!

3.3/5 I ordered 5 kinds of taco ( 6 on menu in total). The beef taco has the most flavourful taste. The rest of meat were light, and needed a bit work to bright them up. The location is hidden, but the space was full. (first come first serve, no seat saves). It would be a nice place to hang out with friends ( at late night), and the most importantly!!! order beef taco!!!

OveraI I had a really positive experience at Gringo.

The decor and music were fun, the service was excellent and the food was passable for the price.
That being said I did have some issues, my tacos were watery and inconsistent. I ordered two pork tacos that were, although watery quite tasty so I ordered two more my second helping of tacos where fatty and not nearly as enjoyable.

A fun little location with super friendly staff. We got 6 tacos for $15 and two of their colourful cocktails. We really enjoyed the bright neon 80s decor and the whimsical nature of the room. The cocktails were super strong and a little too sugary. The tacos were nothing special, but some were better than others. The brisket was probably the best of the tacos and the veggie one was the worst.

Oh my goodness. Amazing! Super awesome for late night tacos. Kinda smaller but if it's busy you can always do takeout like we did. Awesome homemade hot sauces, super delicious queso and homemade chips. Good price and friendly staff!! I think it's safe to say it's in the running for new favourite taco place.

Tacos – when you just don’t want to bother rolling up a burrito. These handheld hunger-hammering hammocks carry so much flavour in such a compact package. Being small also allows for more variety – it’ll be like a tasting flight, but for tacos. I usually go to La Taqueria, but oinkyCHAN and I decided to head to Gastown for a change of scenery. Gringo in Gastown’s Blood Alley sets itself apart from tacquerias and cantinas by zapping its patrons back to the 80’s and 90’s with its bright pink neon lights, old school TV shows and retro tabletop designs. We initially walked past this place because it looked like a night club from the outside.

Went to meet some friends here on the weekend. Wasn't sure why but host was having a power trip over me joining them and would not allow it. Never had a restaurant treat me so poorly. Badly managed. will not be coming back to be treated with no respect.
Picky Diner
Overall, their affordable and tasty tacos made me happy. The flamboyant Thai Buckets were pretty fun too, but I doubt I would spend $16 for one next time. It might not be the greatest spot for cocktails and cocktail crawls if the quality of booze really matters to you, but the experience is definitely one of a kind. However I would come back here for the tacos.
Meaghanc8
There’s nothing that can’t be fixed with a good taco. And there’s especially nothing that can’t be fixed with 3 good tacos for $8. Make sure you mind the syringes as you stroll the cobble-stoned Blood Alley lined with dumpsters and the occasional unsavoury character on your way to Gringo, but never look back.
Maggi Mei
When looking for a starting point for our afternoon cocktail crawl, I couldn’t think of a more fun launching point. The bloggers of “Picky Diner”, “Drunken Noms”, and I were brought together with our love of the drink. We came to the realization that there aren’t many food bloggers out there that review drinks or like to drink, as we did. So we sought a night out revolving around some of the unique cocktails that the Gastown restaurant scene had to offer.

One-liner: Okay tacos and bad burritos for an okay price
Highlight: Encino Taco
Recommended for: Those looking more for a good vibe than a good meal
Would I go back? No.

Check out my blog post for the full review!

Good-ass tacos and beer for a good-ass price. Good-ass service to boot. Apparently I need another 77 characters so let me say get an austin taco or seven and thank me later.

This place gets a 5/5 for uniqueness! I'd describe as good truck with indoor seating. The menu is limited as is the drink list, and I wouldn't describe the drinks or food as very good, however it's CHEAP, the servers are amazing and it's in the heart of Gastown. I absolutely love the idea of more places like this all throughout Vancouver. This is what creates culture in a city and I support what this place represents gull. Heartedly. I'll be back!

Tucked in an armpit of Gastown is Gringo, a tiny diner that serves some really decent tacos amid colourful flamingoes. Price and portion of nicely loaded tacos was comparable to Le Tacqueria but selection is small in comparison. And made even smaller by their running out of two types of fillings by around 5.30pm on a Tuesday night. That said, some of their fillings were basically so tasty that you didn't need any hot sauce or costs-extra additional toppings. Find out which ones...
Good Food Good Mood
Fun decor.....Mediocre tacos....Inattentive service....Rude staff....Disappointing experience *correction* only 1 of 6 tacos was mediocre (the rest was bleh). Only downhill from here..

Worst burrito ever!!. I got a chicken burrito. There were only two ingredients in the tortilla: tiny shreds of chicken, undercooked rice, and absolutely nothing else.
The group I was with actually didn't believe me when I said that it was the worst burrito I've tried so they each had a bite and all three of them agreed. It was unbelievable that this place actually served crunchy, semi-raw rice with barely any chicken wrapped up in a thick, over-sized tortilla.

The service was nice but I am never returning!

This place is a tiny hole in the wall “Mexican” restaurant that literally fits a max capacity of 27 people (I overheard the bouncer kick someone out…yeah…they have a bouncer). It has a super casual, almost a food stand-like atmosphere. The server was great, the sangria was awesome, and the nachos? They were just okay. Sex Appeal: 1.6/5 Ohh, ouch! Not very sexy nachos at ALL. Just slathered all over with sauces and what not, and then awkwardly placed jalapenos. It was just not very appealing or sexy. Sexiness isn’t all about looks either, people. It’s the emotion you convey, and these nachos did not convey the right emotions in us when put down on our table. In fact, we mostly got nervous that we wouldn’t have enough food. Ingredient Coverage: 3.3/5 There was one layer of toppings on top of the chips, but once you got past those you just had a bunch of naked, sad chips. You may recall us mentioning something called vessel chips in previous posts, which are crucial to having a thoroughly satisfying nacho experience, BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE DIPS. Price to volume ratio: 3.67/5 Gringo’s “Stadium Nachos” were actually only 7$, which seems like a total steal. But really the portion is basically individual size. Rowan had eaten dinner already so he was fine, but Misha and I hadn’t. The nachos were barely an appy to us and made us even more

I've been wanting to try this place for awhile. My friends were looking for some good, cheap food so I suggested this place.

I got their tacos, they were pretty average. Nothing too exciting and doesn't really stand out. Their guacamole was also really small for the price and not as fresh as I had hoped for.

The interior was really cool though. Small, quaint but very fun and festive.

I feel like this place is more of a late night eats than for a go out for dinner kind of place.

Bad service. Average food.. My boyfriend and I went to Gringo on a Thursday night for dinner. It was quite busy but we managed to get 2 stools along the high top bench that runs across the front window of the restaurant. We tried the 3 dips with corn chips as a starter and the dips were all pretty average, was expecting more of their made to order guac! We then ordered some tacos and were left waiting quite a while.... In the meantime a group of about 6 or 8 people arrived and without mentioning a word to us, one of the staff opened up the doors across the whole front of the restaurant. Not ideal in the middle of winter!!!! They then proceeded to seat this new group of random people right on the other side of the bench we were sitting at which is no more than 30cm wide and barely enough for one person to eat their dinner on, let alone having a random person sitting directly opposite you trying to share the same bench space!!! Would have been nice of the staff to have the common courtesy to inform us they were going to open up the doors and seat new people right in front of us!
We cancelled our taco order and left. Wouldn't go back there that's for sure.

Awesome. If you're looking for authentic Mexican you're in the wrong place. It's called Gringo for a reason. This is one of my favorite spots in Gastown.
Blondeshellbomb
Lame food, bad attitude, gross. Tacos were definitely not inspiring. Just boring and bland. Low quality. The staff seemed like we were interrupting their day when we entered. The one guy behind the bar was standing on the food prep area to reach something from a top shelf and didn't clean it afterwards. Just gross. Definitely will not be returning here.

WE LOVE GRINGO. Great company, food and atmosphere. Keep it up!

I went to gringo for the first time tonight and it was pretty good.....I loved the street dog and the beer prices were great at 3.50 for a lager! Tried 3 types of tacos and the mazatlan style was the best! The shrimp was horrendous! DO NOT ORDER! The price, atmosphere, hours, street dog and cheap beer will definately bring me back...tacos need some work....over all I will come back if I'm in the hood but not a destination spot.
Drjonasson
Street Dog is awesome. I went with some friends a couple days ago. The street dog was delicious, and filled me up for $6. The beer is a good deal for $3.50, and all my friends enjoyed their cocktails. Also, the guys who run the place are really nice, making an effort to get to know us all. Definitely coming back

Hoping it will get better. I want this place to be great, because the owner seems awesome and they have cheap local beer and a great atmosphere, but the food is not good. I had a burrito special and there was no veg inside the burrito, just meat (chicken) that was under seasoned and there were bones in it! three!

Like I said, I hope the menu can be improved upon because otherwise, it's great, but for now I will venture up the street for la taqueria

When to Gringos the other day, cheap cheap cheap. No frills, Myself and a buddy drank ten beers four shots ( two where free from the bar tender ) and we both ate twice. Nachos x2 and then a New York farm yard dog, or something like that. Pretty tasty.
That all came to just under $80 wow. We where going to just fill up for food and booze cheap, then hit a more well I on bar, but it was lively and we had a good banter with other ppl. Good night!

The mixed reviews that fill this page confuse me. I am currently enjoying my 3rd visit (9th taco) and I must admit that I first wondered into this place after hearing about the $3.50 pints. Upon closer inspection I found a cool, off the beaten path bar where I can enjoy a beer and a snack without the pretentiousness affiliated with many gastown bars. Definitely worth a look, highly recommended.

Cheap eats, cheap drinks, great company!. Been going to Gringo for about a month now and never get tired of the atmosphere, which is a mix of a taco truck and the bar from Cheers. Delicious food (the brunch on Saturdays is AMAZING!) and great drinks make it a great spot for your night. The crowd is the perfect mix of trendy Gastowners and bar staff/servers/industry folk that keeps the mood fun and inviting.

Eat my taco. I love the fact that Gringo serves cheap taco's and cheap drinks. They are no frills, and their affordable pricing ensures that everyone can afford to eat and drink in gastown. Cozy and colorful. Love the menu set up, allowing you to order by the taco. Anyone that has a hard time enjoying the atmosphere or the food here needs to have their head examined. Gringo is proudly low-brow, and if you're too cool for school, then I'm sure there are many other places that will suit your pampered palette.

We loved it!. The cocktail I had was amazing, so be sure to try the Pink Flamingo. I am not sure which concoction my friend had, but she loved its tang (pictured below). The food was tasty, and I do like that you can order the amount you want, and add on as you want. Way to go, Gringo!

Tacos, Beer, and Pink Flamingos are Fun. I'm not quite sure what everyone's complaining about. We ate here tonight and the tacos were great, beer was good/local, and the owners were friendly. We live in the neighbourhood, and will definitely eat here again. I think everyone gets so wrapped up in their own lives in Vancouver that sometime they forget that starting a business takes hard work and dedication. These guys have both. As Gringo continues to grow it would be nice for everyone to support an establishment that doesn't attract people in party limos from Surrey. Yep, I went there. Thumbs up Gringo, you're on the right track!

Not so good..... I was quite excited to hear of the new mexican joint moving into gastown, but sadly it is currently a let down. The tacos are, well, as close to terrible as I have had. I understand that they are made off-site and trucked in, which doesn't appear to be working very well.

The concept is great. Cheap beer and cheap tacos, but without any quality on the food it is just destined for failure.

I kinda hope that the owner pays attention to the on-line reviews and can get things taken care of. The cheap beer just won't cut it.

No Bueno. Ate there today for the first time, and definitely the last. My wife and I ordered the Stadium Nachos which were soggy chips sitting in a runny pool of some sort of cold cheesy mayo. The teaspoon of a salsa was alright, the store bought sour cream was at least not past the best before date, the avocado blended with sour cream (their secret guacamole recipe) was not so incredible.

On to the tacos, which are incredibly tiny and lacking in any sort of flavour. We ordered a pork, a chicken and a shrimp one. All bad choices. It was completely indiscernible which was the chicken and which was the pork. They were both presented as lumps of brownish meat with no accompaniment. They tasted like El Paso taco mix. The shrimp taco was horrid. Three tiny shrimps were swimming in an off green mix of not so fresh looking salsa verde.

There are plenty of great Mexican places in Vancouver. My top hits would be Cuchillo, Mezcaleria, and La Taqueria.
Toni
Maybe after the bar. Had the 6 tacos for $15. They were all average, very small, no extra toppings...corn tortillas are obviously not home made. For amazing tacos hit la taqueria up the street, but after the bar with a buzz they will do the trick.
Alexa
Came here for the first time tonight. Had the three different meat tacos and every single one of them was delicious. I feel like the previous negative review was because the customer didn't voice their concerns to the owners. Owners are on site and are willing to do anything so help you enjoy the amazing experience they have to offer.

... the Chuck was quite tasty, definitely a winner in this batch; the shrimp in the Pink were OK, but the sauce was tad too sour (in the wrong way too) for me; Earl was really average; still, glad I cam across the Chuck, will ge

There were some misses but I will be returning to Gringo with its bright pastel coloured seating, for their shrimp, pork and chicken taco offering.
In the back alley of Blood Alley you can watch fights break out over an umbrella, grab a tasting flight at Salt Tasting Room , or grab some affordable Mexi-Cali-style food and drinks. This hot pink flamingo restaurant is perfect for your night cap, a pre-and post-game grub or a casual get together. The 28 person capacity restaurant is friendly and easy going. We came here to celebrate a friend birthday over some drink, snacks and fist pumps with strangers. Gringo Gastown is located where Judas Goat used to be. Don’t worry about Blood Alley, Gringo has their own bouncers to man the doors in case things get a little Nacho Libre! The Pink Flamingo 7: pink grapefruit, tequila, beer. A tasty tart cocktail . Beer Colada 7: pina colada mixed with ale beer. Light and refreshing. Stadium Nachos 6: chips, queso, jalapenos, sour cream, guac and salsa. Add beef, pork, chicken or shrimp to anything for 2. This nice sized nacho to share. We ordered a variety of tacos 6 for 15: The meat was t
