Review Sophie's Cosmic Cafe - Vancouver

Stefan Rees
Great little cafe, tons of cool nostalgia all over the walls. Coffee was great. classic eggs Benny was perfect as well. Pancakes were huge and fluffy. But the deep fried homefries? Absolutely killer. Maybe the best breakfast potatoes I've had. And our server was a delight, attentive, patient and friendly.
Cool Kid
Cool brunch spot with very nice interior decor. The service was lovely but the food was mid; the potatoes were dry and bland and there was not enough hollandaise on the Benny. But all in all, cool place!
Sandra Chan
We haven’t been back here for years. The prices have skyrocketed! Love the decor and there’s lots to choose from on the menu. I enjoyed my Santa Fe Benny - a unique one for sure; couldn’t finish it due to the generous serving of potatoes.

Been coming here since my university days (>25 years ago) on/off and it’s consistently awesome! Great food, even better service, big portions, and fair prices.
Gina Grape
Very quaint interiors, friendly staff, great food... Santa Fe eggs bennies, waffles and burgers were delicious. A friend of mine recommended the place and I was glad I took his word for it. Sophie's did not disappoint. Now we have a go to place for brunch before we go for a walk by the water.

Cozy Cafe in Kitz that has a warm vibe on the inside with great food to match. I personally find Sophie’s to be better than it’s neighbour Jam and they have less of a wait time. Eggs in my order were cooked to a degree I had asked for and the hot sauce compliments the potatoes well. Great place for a weekend breakfast or brunch.

It was my first time at Sophie’s but definitely not the last. The menu had a lot of variety and the food was tasty! I would try and sit outside if it’s a sunny day! Not sure if they take reservations but you’ll probably wait to be seated for a bit if it’s the weekend.

This cafe takes you back in the 70's, 80, & 90's.Such a retro vibe. The food is awesome. Its one of our favorite breakfast place now in Vancouver.

Food (breakfast) and coffee were great, and service was excellent. I would happily go back to Sophie's for breakfast/brunch :)
Stephanie Howells
Fantastic service! The waitress was amazing with my son, if your looking for a place to go with your kids for breakfast Sophie’s is perfect!

Best food my husband and I have ever had!!! This is a resturant that cooks like Mom does!!! Taking it from me....I love to cook and the food was spot on!!!! The guacamole eggs benedict was to die for! !!! The eggs were poached perfectly!!! Koodoos to the chef!!! Our waitress was professional and service was outstanding she was such a doll!! Even though I no longer live in my childhood stomping grounds and over an hour away, I know my husband and I would return again!!! Our experience was absolutely wonderful!!!!
Chad Xix
Nothing beats great food, cooked by the finest kitchen staff who take the time to ensure your meal is great quality in taste, and served by the happiest serving staff, who insist your experience is memorable. Thank you to Sophie and all the wonderful staff .. I, for one, will return again and again with more family and friends so they too can enjoy such excellent comfort food!
Suzanne Moreau
Great fast service. Friendly! Food was good - perhaps a little more flavour in the Greek omelet and I’d have given them a 5 Star. Too bad there’s a fee to sub fresh veg for the fried potatoes and toast but good that they have GF options!
Eric M. Roeder
Really cool place with a great diner vibe. Loved the decor of interesting collectables. Waitress was in good humour, service was pleasant and timely, and the food from the fairly extensive menu was delicious.

Whenever I hit Vancouver, my first and favorite stop is always Sophie"s. The food has always been a great comfort. Shakes, Ashura Wheat breakfast, Northern range steak and eggs.... the staff always remembers you...patrons are friendly and engaging... and if you're lucky, you can still spot Sophie perambulating about and greeting guests.
Lauren Petey
Their Old Fashioned Cappuccino milkshake is so good that I woke up today craving it! Have you seen their menu? There are so many options for food that I try to know what I want when I go in but then I see others' dishes and I'm back at square one. It doesn't matter what diet I'm trying that day, Vegetarian, Pescatarian (Salmon burger is awesome!), or Gluten Free options, there are so many good options! Plus Sophie makes her own hot sauce (yes way!) The decor is like no other; I get to give my eyes a screen-break and check out all the toys, movies and famous people on the wall...There is more than enough to keep any mind stimulated for awhile ;)

It's a Vancouver landmark. Best place I know for breakfast. We don't drive or fly 1,300 miles to Vancouver just to get to Sophie's, but that wouldn't be a bad idea. Everything is good, but make sure you put some of the special Sophie's hot sauce on the potatoes.
Alan Jones
The server was very rude she was walking around the floor telling here colleague that she was not happy. mixed up everything I asked for and the food came out cold.
Carla Barth Hack
Awesome service! We hit the place during trivia....won a bottle of the hot sauce (very flavorful btw). Delish plentiful food...and of course the decor will keep your convo going forever. I'll def be back!
Stephanie Fusnik
Came on a Monday, late morning. Staff were super nice, service was quick, barely had to wait for food and the food was amazing! Definitely recommend!
Lawry Trevor-Deutsch
There is no other place for brunch in Vancouver. Been coming here since the 80s as with much of the clientele. Be prepared to wait outside on Sunday unless you go early. On the upside, Sophie often serves coffee for people waiting to get in. No small portions - don't even try
Sharon Symes
There was a little bit of a wait but well worth it. Excellent service, (quite the comedian) and great food. Sophie was even there buzzing around. Great brunch with the family.
Sheena Elaine
This is a place to have breakfast in Vancouver!! Highly recommended 👊🏽

We came here for a late breakfast. There were plenty of seats available. There is a good selection of items on the menu. I tried the Spanish Omelette and it was very filling. It had generous person of hash brown. The omelette was also quite good, not too oily nor soggy.
Lebloop
Basic breakfast foods. Its good for what it is. The staff are friendly and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere and a patio. A little overpriced but it is in Kitsilano.
Vanfoodie
I ordered the eggs Benedict here and the poached eggs were sour? I think it’s cause they use vinegar to help with the poaching process. Wouldn’t recommend, but their other breakfast items are really good - pancakes, waffles, etc. Their potato hash was okay, nothing special.

Excellent choice and a wonderful surprise as we were browsing the area for a place to have lunch.
There are many wholesome menu choices for a variety of dietary preferences.
Service was relaxed, very friendly and personable.
Interior was a bit like a 50s diner with lots of fascinating detail.
Selina Lo
Sophie's Cosmic Cafe. A Kitsilano institution so kitschy it hurts. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively's brunch of choice when they're back in town. A diner so unpretentious it makes you forget that $200 leggings are only a few steps away (that's Kits for ya.) . If I still lived a stone's throw away from West 4th (YES I moved...again, I'm still in Kitsilano though) you would probably find me here more often. But alas, I do not...I live near West Broadway now (which is more convenient, given that the 99 comes every 5 mins or so.)

Long story short: after a month of residing along the paradise that is West 4th, my roommate gave me the boot because she "needed" my room for a friend. In a panicked daze, I had to find a place to relocate to, ASAP. Luckily I was able to score a quaint, one bedroom suite in a brand new house in the West Broadway area (this girl here does not want to move back to Burnaby!) But s'all good, cause I like my new place a lot better (oh the luxury of having your own bathroom!)

Oh, and have you guys noticed? I'm back on my schedule of posting 3 times a week! So for the most part, you can expect a new blog post come Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from here on out!

Just okay. We had poor service in the middle of the day (after lunch rush). We were sat by the bathroom, even though the place was almost empty. I had to go ask the waitress to refill our water/coffee/hot water. The milkshake was good, apple pie slice was massive, but the other food was just okay. We were there with a group of 6. The food was too expensive for the value. It was probably the most expensive meal we ate on our holiday, with the worst food and dining experience.
Nicole Justine
Cute little place, fits well with the Kitsilano vibe. Very small patio. Sat inside, which was very retro looking. Eggs benedict tasted nice and was filling. Always make sure to bring their hotsauce home with us as is the only place you can get it.
FrenchFry?
Returned here for a late lunch today and enjoyed a nice meal in a friendly atmosphere. The service was good and the food priced well for what we received. Sophie's has never disappointed me.
KnifeAndFork
Ventured here for breakfast on Sunday morning. We are out of town and heard great things. We were not disappointed. Wonderful ambience and felt right at home with a diner type setup. Ordered poached eggs and waffles and it was all amazing! Best waffles I have ever had. Also the hostesses were friendly and energetic!

Breakfast place. The salmon benny's were ok. Nice small patio. Interesting inside. Service was very nice. The french toast looked amazing but didn't get to try it

I had a dinner with my families tonight Sophie's Cosmic Cafe in Kitsilano. Everything was fine until the server brought me the burned hamburger. I said to him this is burned. The server looked at me and my ASIAN family and said, 'in Canada, we usually over cook the beef patty.'
Vancity Food Guy
I thought it was very funky! There's alot to talk about when you see all the souvenirs against the walls and ceilings. Lot of vintage old school items. Food is great. Diner like, very fresh, nice and hot. I felt very cozy inside. Definitely check this place out. There's also a patio incase your with a dog.

The service was amazing and the decor was super funky. I really like how there is a lot of vegetarian food, since I have been a vegetarian all my life it's really awesome@ to find restaurants that have a lot of variety in their menu. The veggie burger was delicious even when I just took it home to eat the next day, and I loved how my eggs Benny used corn bread instead of an English muffin, it was different but it was still yummy.
O Ellinas
defenetly my favorite ,good job Dicky.great food realistick prices and a décor out of this world, and friendly staff,my favorite the trucker special ; coming soon,,,,

What a unique place to gawk at memorabilia while eating home made food from fun and smiley people! A neighborhood favourite and busy at meal times. Check it out!
LaurenDrives
Sophie's corners the market on 50s & 60s memorabilia while satisfying the growing number of hip millennials. Walking in, you're greeted with glass Coke bottles, booths, and friendly staff. The walls are lined with Betty Boop and vintage license plates.

My go-to is the Eggs Benedict as this restaurant is effectively a diner. You're in for a treat as a burger fan as well. The Monty Mushroom burger offers an entirely packed patty so you're not leaving starving!

Finding parking is a bit annoying but you can occasionally get lucky in front of the apartments. Wait times for Sophie's are usually around 15-20 minutes. Avoid weekend brunch times.
Michael Kwan
If you're looking for a kitschy place with some wicked breakfast options, Sophie's is a solid choice along West Fourth. The decor is pretty out of this world and you get that old school diner charm with a little dash of modern creativity. Good stuff.
Michael
Fun place for brunch. Really quick service, which is good because of the usual long waits. Food is the standard Vancouver brunch fare, but they do have a unique ashura wheat dish that I haven't seen anywhere else.
Zoe
It's fun, cheerful. Decent food, decent atmosphere. Overly busy for brunch. For me it's just another place for brunch. But I'm "hangry" in the mornings so this may make me bias
Drunken Noms
Drunken Master returned from Europe a couple of weeks ago, and we’ve been meaning to catch up ever since. But life’s gotten pretty busy for both of us at the moment, so it was only yesterday that we finally found time to meet up. On a side note, you may have noticed that we’ve stopped posting blogs on weekends. We’d love to continue to write every day, but Drunken Master is having to take a step back from the blog for awhile, and I can only write so much on my own! This is why I’m always so impressed with bloggers like Sherman and Selina who manage (or managed for a long time) to regularly pump out posts every single day all by themselves. It really is a commitment!
Susie Hartkorn
This is a great spot for breakfast. The food is good and staff are nice. I recommend getting the awesome chocolate milkshake and ham eggs Benny. The vibe of this place is really funky as well. It definitely has the old school diner feel to it. I will be back again!
Chocoholic Frenchie
In brief, it looks like the owner bought every vintage items in Vancouver and put them on the walls. Oh, and he bought a pool table and a plastic fish and put the table on the wall too with the fish on top of it. The first time I entered Sophie’s cosmic cafe, I felt like I entered a time capsule. Since some things cannot be described in words, here is a photo of the pool table: Aft

Worst Brunch I've had in Vancouver. I came here at the weekend with some friends for Brunch. While they enjoyed their meals my Greek Bennie was nearly inedible. It looked like a plate of brown mush, I found egg shell and the "home fries" were broken up boiled potatoes, which were not cooked or washed properly. Grit and Egg Shell - Very disappointing.. will not be going back.
Had to order toast because I was so hungry, in the end I paid $15 dollars for 2 slices of toast.

Cardboard with sauce.. I hadn't been to Sophie's for about 2 years after the terrible experience a friend and I had with their food quality. Before that, I’d been a going there since '96. Tried it today and it was a terrible let down once again, never again. My friend and I both felt bloated and uncomfortable after the experience. That might fool the hungover university crowd, but foodies stay away.

First: the coffee. NO REFILLS on drip coffee. I guess the $0.25 product cost on organic coffee is really eats into their bottom line. So we both ordered Double Shot Americanos. In all fairness they did get the temperature right... it was hotter than tap water. There was Zero Creama. If they fancy themselves ‘good enough’ to charge by the cup, then they’d better deliver a quality product, and this was below average.

I had the lumberjack: 2 bland very large McDonald's style pancakes with 2 'pinky finger' sized sausages, 2 ‘Okay’ sized pieces of bacon and 1 piece of 7cm by 7cm ham accompanied by 2 eggs and a sliver of orange. There wasn't anything wrong with the cooking of the meal, but the ingredients used were small and flavourless. The pancakes dissolved before they hit my mouth and seemed like they were from super cheap premix box.

My friend had the eggs Mexicana. Mostly corn chips. She stopped eating halfway through because it was making her feel bad.
Any hoo, don’t let the weekend lineups fool you. There are far better breakfast places close by.
M.mcqueen99
Terrible food and even worse service. Paid 15$ for the some foamy pancakes and cheap ham. This place is garbage go down the road to the local
M.mcqueen
Undank food brah. As a freelance travel blogger I don't have alot of money. Sophies was expensive. Check out my blog. Services was 4 gayers.
Sarawr
I don't get what the big deal is. I finally dropped in for breakfast one day after seeing the numerous lineups outside their front door. We got there early enough so the wait wasn't too long. The staff there were friendly and attentive. Portions of the food were huge, but, well, it's typical diner food. There was nothing amazing about it. Prices and taste were comparable to your average diner. I would go back, but I wouldn't line up to get in.
Catherine
Terrible service! Do not cater to babies in strollers whatsoever! Will not allow children to sit on ur lap in restaurant! And extremely rude! Is there such a thing as baby racism??? Cause I just discovered it
Andrea Hartley
I would not recommend Sophie's at all. The food was bland the salad over dressed and they used kraft processed pram cheese on my salad. They charged 3.50 for a kids size chocolate milk. My husband steak sandwich was really chewy and he didn't eat it and they still charged us and did not even ask if he would like a salad or desert instead. Overall really disappointed and over priced.
Megs.j.king
Don't let the line up fool you!. Sophie's has been a Kitsilano staple for many many years however the quality of their food and the service has gone downhill and is now not worth visiting anymore. You may be fooled that it's amazing as there always seems to be a huge line up on the weekends, however this is not the case, it's not very good. There are huge portions of food consisting of very low quality ingredients usually undercooked and the waitress who served us our last visit was very rude and obviously didn't want to be there. I would say save your time and head somewhere else.
Iris Chen
Dislike. The staff were very cheerful. Unfortunately I did not have a positive (food) experience here. My burger was overly flavoured and I could not taste the meat itself. My friend had the french toast and it was dry, not fluffy at all.
Alan
Interesting decor. The smoked salmon eggs benny was good and the service was impressive. Worth another visit
Edward
Had the eggs Benedict. Wasn't good. They say they poach there eggs soft but they came out hard. The hash browns where a pile of mushy mess. There aredeffinatly better places for breakfast in the area.
TheWestCoasters
What can I say, $10 a plate for fresh food and better than normal diner service. The food isn't perfect but it isn't greasy and you don't leave hungry or broke its a B+
Lakecitybrad
Have always loved this place. Live in the Interior, but come whenever in town. I must say, last couple of times not nearly as impressed. Sophie is not in so much anymore and it shows. Great thing is Sophies Hot Sauce...the Best. I always pick up a couple of bottles when in town so I never run out! Wish they sold it online. Tons of flavour and not too hot. Highly recommend.
Eastvanfoodie
Fantastic Breakfast. So surprised by all the bad reviews! had breakfast there today for the first time. service was awesome. super attentive waitstaff and everything came really quickly. had the kitts breakfast and the value was amazing. was really impressed with the quality and portion of everything on the plate. also the coffee was great and i appreciated that my cup kept getting filled without me having to ask. will definitely be going back!

Cute place but the food is just alright. The restaurant is completely adorable and retro. i was excited when i saw all-day breakfast and veggie options. our service was good. everything was perfect until the food came.

i ordered a waffle, received a pancake. that was fixed easily but it was a little undercooked, still edible though. i had to ask for syrup. my date ordered a turkey sandwich that was supposed to have cranberry sauce on it. apparently they were out of it and decided not to inform us (maybe a lack of communication between the cooks and servers?). after eating maybe half, the waitress offered her another menu item so she got a small salad. the dressing was sour though so she ended up not eating most of that, too.

the bill came, nothing was taken off and it costed $5 for a little fruit on the side? woah. i probably won't return based on this visit. nearly $40 on brunch for two could be taken somewhere better.
AllieKat
Try it for yourself. I can see why there could be mixed reviews about this place.
1) Do expect to wait if you're hitting it up around lunch hour
2) Service is inconsistent
3) Space is a bit cramped
My experience? Well, I'm glad I finally tried it. We did end up having to wait in line but it moved steadily and we luckily landed a seat on the patio as it was a nice day (interior seemed a bit dark and gloomy.) Our server was running the whole patio so I don't blame her forgetfulness but she did pull through with everything. I was disappointed to hear the oyster burger sold out so I ordered their signature Cosmic burger (mushroom cheddar) instead which came with two sides of choice: fries and soup of the day, creamy basil tomato bisque. The food was a bit of a wait but when it arrived it was impeccable. I'm not a big fan of burgers but the patty was well seasoned and the condiments married well with everything. Fries were crispy but fairly standard. Their soup on the other hand was full-bodied, rich, and flavorful. I'm not even a fan of tomato soup and I inhaled the whole thing!
I will most definitely return to take care of unfinished business with that oyster burger and perhaps to try a few breakfast items (i.e. Santa Fe Benedict.) I won't be expecting phenomenal service of course but I don't think they will disappoint for a solid meal at a decent price compared to some other diners out there.

P.S. For those who are not keen on waiting, when we settled up there was no line-up; this was around 2pm.
Chelsea Windl
Very very disappointing! The eggs Benny was very underwhelming, I would recommend white spot as a far better alternative, better tasting and better service.
Carrie Ann Harfman
POOR SERVICE. SO BAD I DIDN'T TIP. Okay ever since I moved to Vancouver many locals told me to try Sophie's. I say don't bother. The food is not very good their omelettes are watery and the service. WOW.. We were waiting 10 minutes for my cousin to arrive, the waitress tried to kick us out after we stood in line for 30 mins. we had even ordered our beverages and the waitress had the nerve to threaten. Well she was quite a treat. I will not be going back and neither will my friends. Try Cora in Coquitlam, now that it real food.
Ricolo
I have a feeling this place used to be really good when it first opened up but after getting so popular and winning so many awards they stopped caring about their quality, to be honest it was kind of gross, cold potatoes, soggy bread really really overrated!
Mathew Thomas
Overrated. Had their french toast and the bread did not even have time to get soaked in the egg batter. The french toast was hard and not tasty. Over heard another table also unhappy at their order and did not get a return/exchange for something better. Our server was good. Nice interesting decor. Was looking forward to end my 'diet' at Sophie's but should have done it elsewhere.
Lia
Meh...nothing special. Overhyped, overpriced. Service was good. Food was ok...the only thing that I really liked about this place was the decor. Next time I'll head to Denny's
Eloa
So disappointed. Food was mediocre....hashbrowns were overly starchy and terrible. Nothing was overly delicious and the oj was expensive. Server also took our plates away without even asking.....ordered key lime pie and the crust was raw...awesome. Never again.
Kev
Place for family brunch!?. The inside is filled with a lot of cosmic stuff and your kids would love it. Besides, servers were so nice and friendly.
Speaking of foods, nothing special but it"s tasty. Good place for family's sunday brunch if you are lucky enough not to wait for a long time on the street.
Rmichel
Lovely little place on 4th. I love Sophie's. In fact I have never met a person who had a bad thing to say about Sophie's. The line-up on a busy afternoon is well worth the wait. Inside, the surroundings are unique, retro and eclectic and the food is never disappointing. They also serve their santa fe eggs benny on cornbread, and that alone stole my heart.
PickyFoodCritic
Nice inside, Normal food!. Nice Decoration but very normal food
Mariana Hollmann
Comfortable brunch. The first time I went was with an old friend and some new, was after a terrific hangover. It probably helped that it was an overall lovely morning, but the brunch fit in very nicely to our plans.. nothing magical, but all I remember is that they had coffee.

The second time was with my dad and ex. Not sure why that meetup happened, but I was again distracted by the people and situation and not so much the food. Still though, good enough.
Yummyinkits
Consistant Favourite. Love this place for brunch. Service is friendly and attentive, food is delicious.
Chloe
It was ok. Diner food. Bad? no. Great? no. Diner food? yes. I think I like the salmon benny at Enigma better.
Catheine
OVER-RATED! Poor service, food takes forever.
Herb
Ruined for all other eggs benny. Other than homemade I have never had any other eggs benny that werent terrible. The holondaise is fantastic! They give you enough potatoes to guarantee you will be full. And the hot sauce is fantastic. When I lived in Van I always had some around the house.
John Rudolph
Wow. Honest traditional breakfasts with genuine high quality ingredients. Hash Browns from scratch. Homemade everything and honest orange juice. The owners seem to have decided that the public deserves the best and they've delivered. Wow.
Cdunn
Nom-nom to the nomity-om. Awesome! First brunch in Vancouver and they did it right. Not too complicated of a menu- just right. Super cute inside too.

I split a Mexican eggs benny (can't recall the menu name) and it was incredible. Came on a cornbread base with guacamole and salsa- topped with the eggs done perfectly and the hollandaise. Sided that with some beans and home fries.

Also split the waffles. YUM!

Definitely go if you are a breakfast person.
Lodgecookie
Waste of Money..... Left half of my Turkey Breast Club Sandwich. Asked by waitress if I wanted her to wrap it up. I said no thanks, it was kinda disgusting. Dry, stringy, flavourless. She went back to the kitchen and spoke with someone who mentioned turkey wasn't particularly fresh. Waitress said she wouldn't necessarily recommend this menu... STILL saw it on my bill!!! Pretty f*&***% nervy serving garbage food and charging hungry people $15 for a sandwich and fries.
The Transformer
Decent food - love the free range egg option - but really overpriced for what you get.
Cakebrain
Fantastic service and very kid-friendly! Kids' dinners were huge portions. One kid had a huge bowl of penne in tomato sauce with salad & the other chicken fingers with fries. Vanilla ice cream with choice of toppings is included in the kiddie meal. I had the Cosmic Royale burger with cheese. It was good and meaty. Stomach had the Deluxe burger. We were very satisfied and took home a doggie bag too.
Sweetmichelle3
Not Gluten-Free (GF) Friendly. I recently went for Brunch at Sophies. While it is a popular spot with an extensive menu, they do not cater to those with Gluten allergies at all.

When I ordered brunch I simply wanted the toast to be substituted for more hashbrowns or fruit. The server said it was wasn't possible (why not?..is it really that difficult to add an extra spoonful of potatoes), this is very frustrating for those who require GF meals.

The menu explicitly states "We do not accept custom meal requests". I would not recommend this spot to those with Gluten allergies.
Terri Davies
Atmosphere! Food! Nice!. Loved the eggs benny on corn bread with black beans. SO great.
M_star
It's breakup time.. First, the plusses:
+ hollandaise sauce is tangy and smooth
+ good layer of guacamole. creamy and well seasoned.
+ regular coffee refills

Now the minuses:
- no soymilk for coffee
- no substitutions in meals
- the food arrives on wide plates but mine consisted of goopy mounds mooshing together. the plating is terrible
- No willingness to accomodate - I needed to pay an extra $3 to sub in potatoes since I couldn't eat the muffin or cornbread that came with my dish. (yes, it was the dish with the least number of required substitutions). i've never had a carb switch charge at any other breakfast joint, especially for a non-combo item
-as for allergies, if you've got celiac, don't even think about coming here. no substitutions for their many wheat carbs (tortillas, toast, cornbread) mean you'll pay up the nose and still feel ill for days.
- curt, unfriendly service
- there's a wasp nest nearby - we were surrounded by aggressively persistent wasps for our entire meal. do not sit on the patio.

after tax and tip, I paid $15 for a santa fe benny (without english muffin or cornbread, or $3 surcharged potatoes [$18 for a breakfast dish??? whatever]). I was still hungry.

the flavour was reasonable, but the value and our treatment just blew.

Sophie, you were good when i came to visit in the 90s. no more - i'm NOT going to return to you. if you want good breakfast, Joe's Grill is just a short wander away. and if you've got any dietary needs, try the Wallflower...who are tasty, don't treat you like a leper, and generally rock all the way round.
Scott Richards
Some of the best breakfast in the area! The milkshakes are some of the best i've had west of the rockies. Go early to avoid lines.
EV Dave
One of our favourite places in the city. Used to live nearby, and this is one of the few 4th avenue spots that makes us come back. Never been for brunch, just dinners. Seriously, you need to save room for their pie. Key lime pie here is possibly the best in the country, and the apple pie is fabulous too. But be prepared, the pieces of pie are massive.
Aubrey
Great food and service in a quaint little diner. Oh and fair prices too!
Steve
Sophies. Shared a oyster burger and delux (regular) burger with my friend. Oyster burger is delicious.
The burger patty was unique, the meat is grinded so fine that it taste so soft and kinda like meat loaf.

Decors on the wall are cool too.
Kate Googins
Sophie's cafe is A-ok with me! I ordered the bacon burger with mushrooms and it was pretty good. though the salad was adequate, the fries were just right.
Sofie Novak
A wonderful spinoff of a 50's restaurant. The food is pricey but it tastes great and the service is usually good. There is a large selection of drinks including floats and milkshakes. Can be a bit too noisy but it's overall a good Vancouver restaurant.
Angel Liu
Wonders!. Love love love this place! =)

the strawberry milk shake is so fresh and amazing!

will be back soon!

Destination Eating Point. This place rocks...........any place with a Fast Bastard in a box on their shelf is my kinda place.

This is a destination eating place! Everyone must experience it and once you do you will keep going back!

Great food, affordable, huge portions, and great variety.

My non meat eater sister loved it too!!
Masked4areason
Better than I remember. I took my friend from London to eat after we visited the closed on Monday's Granville Market. The guy being a consultant does not really eat at home much and being here on hols meant eating out a lot.

Now rocking up at 11am on a Monday, it was surprisingly busy and we managed to get a seat. I looked around taking in the ambiance :) The place's decor must be 20+ years old and all the junk kitsch must be a retro perves heaven.

I went with the eggs bene and the smoked salmon. Now this is usually so rich and overdone in most other places I really feel unwell after a meal. But not here.

The smokd salmon was salty but surprisingly light with a great texture. The eggs were properly cooked and the bread was not soggy from a badly dispensed poacher.

The home fries tasty without being dried or overly salty. I really enjoyed it and thinking about it is making me hungry.

I would go back again.

Fried egg blt sandwich!. Okay, maybe this is common, but for me, it was a first. Not the first place you'd think of for a working lunch but i was out in the area and had always wanted to try. Funky space for sure, the old school diner vibe isn't common in the city. Service was good, food was good and they had real iced tea. If the lunch is any indication, i'm sure brunch/breakfast would be nice - and hopefully worth the line-up.

Pretty good, but more about the atmosphere. The food is good. Not amazing, but good. I have enjoyed Sophie's food , but it's hit and miss. Sometimes the homefries are great and sometimes they taste dry and cold, like they've been sitting around a while.

French fries are from frozen, which is a major sin in my book. I don't think they used to be, if I recall.

Still, great atmosphere and fun to take visitors who always seem to love it. Clearly they are doing something right, but if the food was even better, I guess the line ups would be even longer!

John. Food was good why all the negative reviews? maybe i should give a negative review so the line up wont be so long next time i go.

Overated. Overrated and popular with barstars and tourists. Prepare to lineup down the block.

So-so fare, but I'll bet your friends all go here!. Great atmosphere - so-so food....

We've been coming to Sophie's for years, and again it was a great choice. The veggie sandwich was a new choice for me and now it's a new favourite. The portions are generous, the service was excellent and the prices - for Vancouver - were very reasonable.
We will most definitely be back.
Nosh And Nibble
I usually never find myself defeated by a plate of food, but on Canada Day Sophie’s Cosmic Café filled my brunch-sized stomach to the brim and I waved the white flag. Food: I was feeling particularly hungry having being denied by a closed Jethro’s as my breakfast, so I decided to try what seemed to be the largest thing on the menu, The Fourth Avenue Lumberjack Breakfast. Good golly this plate is massive. In most restaurants and some other parts of this menu you often have to choose between bacon, sausage, or ham. Not for this item though. It comes with all the options. While it didn’t give me a melt-in-my-mouth heavenly taste, the volume was there a la Jethro’s or a couple of breakfasts from Bon’s Off Broadway. The strategy here is to save the pancake last since it’ll colonize whatever space is left in your stomach and eat the watermelon first since it’s sitting on some hot pancakes. I was left defeated with half a pancake remaining before I gave up. The pancakes were super thick. It w

How do I describe this place to do the sensory overload justice? Well it’s an intimate, casual, diner-style place where every square inch is covered with some sort of retro pop culture kitsch mixed with some really cool original art. I’m talking My Little Ponies, vintage Coke bottles, Andy Warhol posters, Mickey Mouse. Some of it’s kind of creepy… the talking Peewee Herman doll…dummies that look straight out of a ventriloquist act. But it’s generally a pretty fun level of visual stimulation for a weekend afternoon. Unless you have a hangover, in which case you may feel nauseous.

It was a fun place to eat though as there were many vintage pictures and collections covering the walls and the decor was super interesting as alot it was old trinkets and collectibles. There was a funny dressed man in there walking around chatting with customers, I think he was a regular…seemed like he was annoying and interrupting people eating there. Thankfully, didn’ t talk to our table.

... don't usually go for 'healthy', but this dish had me at 'Middle Eastern style breakfast' (never tried such a things before). Now I know and can go back to my eggs benny, hash browns, waffles, etc :)
Vancouver's Best Burger
Sophie's Cosmic Cafe. Now, that may sound a little out of this world, but when it comes to the basics, their beef burg is as down to earth as they come. A healthy sized sesame bun playing throne to a 7oz, nicely grilled, all-beef patty serves as a worthy foundation to a flavorful burg with an average amount of ‘drippage’. The burg itself is a healthy, but not overwhelming, portion with a little to be desired in the area of manageability.

Just a few blocks up the hill from my apartment, there's a very popular 4th Ave diner called Sophie's Cosmic Cafe. Since moving to Vancouver, Sophie's has become one of our top picks for breakfast places... in part due to its close proximity to our home, but also because of their tasty food and fun atmosphere. You've probably even heard me mention it here on my blog multiple times, if you're any sort of a regular reader. See, Sophie's doesn't just serve up food (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) - they also serve up a trip down memory lane. Every inch of the entire building is decorated - covered , I should say - in old, classic toys and nostalgic memorabilia. Even the building's facade has character - "Sophie's Cosmic Cafe" is spelled out above the door in leopard print letters, and the entrance is flanked by a 4-foot-tall fork and knife set... . source . Here's a peek inside the place, though keep in mind that I took these photos months ago, during the holiday season (hence the C

Nut Burger. Best Vegetarian burger I have tasted E.V.E.R. It's so good I want to cry on Jesus's shoulder. The texture is hea-v-enly and the chutney is perfec-t-o and the fries were finga-lickin-amazing...

Their portions are huge and the price isn't staggering. Plus the retro style inside is gorgeous and servers are usually super nice. Also they have quirky music.
Domo Is Craving...
If you're a breakfast person then you have to come check this place out! Sophie's is located in West 4th, so parking is pretty difficult. It's a very busy street so it'll be hard to find parking but I can guarantee this place is well worth it. The interior is very laid back, old fashion and sets a very comfortable atmosphere. They had a lot of old toys laying around as their design. I found that pretty cool because there's so many things to look at around the restaurant. I saw this very old m&m dispenser that my mom owns as well.
Food Queen
Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe is a retro style diner located in Kitsilano. I have a big soft spot for simple, comforting, and greasy diner food, so anytime I pass by a diner I feel the need to try it. Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe has been on my list for a while and I was finally able to come check it out while I was working in Kitsilano. Sophie’s is frequently lined up, but I went on an early weekday afternoon and I was seated right away. I ordered the Sophie’s club house ($12.99), one of my favourite classic diner meals. The sandwich was prepared with a triple layer of bread and filled with roasted turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. I liked that they used big chunks of real roasted turkey for the sandwich instead of deli meat. Sadly, the other components of the sandwich were not as impressive. The bread was soggy and it seemed like it had been toasted and sat out for a while before it was served. The bacon made me sad. It was very thin and it lacked texture and smokey flavour. I really wanted t

Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe Vancouver is as old as I am. It is an iconic Vancouver diner serving hearty breakfast and brunch starting 8am. The restaurant itself is ecentric with red and hot pink decor. Their menu has a good variety as with their random knick knacks, collectibles and junk throughout Sophie’s. There are omelettes, egg benedicts, milk shakes (try the espresso milk shake!), sandwiches, burgers and desserts. Sophie’s Cafe is one of those go to breakfast places in Kitsilano if you are looking to end your diet. The struggle is real. Sophie’s makes a great neighborhood hangout and breakfast is always better with friends . Deluxe Burger 12.95: A charred seasoned beef patty with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and mayo. Served with cripsu fries. The burger itself is not very greasy. So you won’t feel too weighed down. Spanish Omelettes 10.99: A seasoned filling of tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, herbs and green olives. Served with hash and toast. Very filling and I like the fresh vegetables to lighten the dish. Made with farm fresh Free Range BC Eggs. Sante Fe Egg Benedict 12.99: Poached soft and a creamy yolk. Homemade salsa, guacamole on homemade cornbread with black beans. A very carb heavy good old 50’s diner food. Served with lots of hash. I prefer my hash more crispy than mushy. And I prefer an English Muffin than cornbread simply because it gets soggy fast. But I guess that is their point to have the Hollandaise sauce and egg yolk all melt together.
Eating With Kirby
Sophie's Cosmic Cafe is located in Kitsilano and looks super quirky from the outside. The inside looks quirky too with its old dinner style red booths and nostalgic randoms on the wall. Pretty neat eh? They also have interesting placemats drawn by little kids.
Poor Starving Students
Overall, the food at Sophie’s is pretty solid diner food. It’s not greasy, which is great and the price is pretty reflective of other restaurants in the West 4th area.

Sophie’s Cosmic Grill hearkens back to a simpler time, not only with its decor, but also with the food served. I understand that breakfast really isn’t an accurate barometer of the actual food at a restaurant, but I can assure you that those who like Sophie’s, like it a lot and probably still consider it a treat to head there for Sunday brunch. The atmosphere is fun, the service upbeat and the food gets the job done.

Smoked Salmon Eggs Benny. You can't f*** that up, and if you do, you suck at life.

If a sweet brunch is more your cup of tea, ask for a stack of Sophie's impossibly fluffy buttermilk pancakes or try the Belgian waffles with whip cream and fresh berries.

It was SO good! Everything about it just came together so well. Usually, there’s always one element that’s off – the sauce consistency (maybe watery or too thick), poorly poached eggs, English muffins that are either stale or soggy, you know, that kind of flaw. But this Benny was just the way it should have been.
Gastrofork Dee De Los Santos
The burger isn’t of Fatburger epicness, Sophie’s burgers are what the food is supposed to be: comfort food, not Epic Meal Time, wrap all-even-the-bill in bacon.

The decor is just a bunch of random nostalgic items pinned to the wall. I do like the coke bottle railing though. The red booths make it have a real diner-ish feel to the place.

I’ve been trying to go to Sophie’s for months – this place is always packed. In the Kitsalano neighbourhood, this is not just a breakfast place, it’s THE breakfast place. The decor inside is very unique – vintage toys, posters and toys adorn the walls. The atmosphere is laid back and homey. Like I mentioned before, this place is famous for their breakfast, brunch and desserts. We ordered the eggs rancheros ($11.99). This is definitely not your standard rancheros eggs, but rather a hybrid of mexican and western flavours. The plate comes with salsa, tortilla chips, sour cream, black beans, your choice of toast and two eggs sunny side up. It’s a big plate. We also ordered the steak and eggs ($16.99) The AAA 6oz sirloin steak comes with hash browns, two eggs and toast. This choice is a bit pricey, but worth it for those with big appetites. No visit to Sophie’s is complete without trying some of their famous homemade pies. ($6.99). We tried the key lime pie. I found the presentation lacki

Its a very cool little place. As soon as I walked in I was distracted by all the random stuff on the walls, shelves... well, everywhere really...

There was a lot on the menu to pick from, but decided to just get the Veggie Sandwich. It came with fruit and salad, nothing fancy but everything was fresh. Pretty good portion too.

I have heard of Sophie's Cosmic Cafe from many UBC students and have been dying to head there to try their pancake. It so happens that this cafe is opened by my sister's boyfriend's relative or something as well! Since Sophie's is located near UBC, I would love to dine there for breakfast before classes. However, that NEVER happen as I have a bad habit of being late for classes. So anyway, I managed to head to Sophie's this time when I head back to Vancouver for a vacation. After the day I met Theresa for Jethro's Fine Grub , we decided to have brunch again but this time at Sophie's!
