Anyone who's from Montreal and surrounding and lives in B.C. and has this craving for food from Quebec this is the place to go to my friend and you will not be disappointed I guaranty
Ive been living on the west coast for 8 years now and this is the best place by far
Awesome food.... great and friendly staff... best place to get food in BC.
Best poutine in BC! Every time I come to Vancouver, I make it a point to eat here. Order anything and everything! So authentic and delicious!
Ermagerd! Umm just wow, this place is amazing, can't wait till the next time I can go to the place again.
This was listed as one of the best poutine places in Vancouver and it was fabulous! Super friendly staff and great relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely be returning!
I go to La Belle Patate at least once a month for steamies . The staff is always great and the food is always like I want it
The first time my friends and I had poutine and we loved it. The staff we’re friendly and had given us an extra hot dog because they took a while with our order. I would definitely be back again when I visit!
I am a poutine snob and this was hands down the BEST poutine I ever had!! My best friend and I drove all the way to Vancouver to try this poutine and it did not disappoint!! Craving more as I write this.
Basically the finest dining establishment in all of Canada. When i came to Canada, i was keen to see what this poutine was about. I'd built it up in my head a lot but the poutine here exceeded all expectations. The cheese curds are good, the gravy is good, and the chips are still crunchy despite the aforementioned gravy
It's not Canada Day without the poutine!
Always a great, authentic poutine! Love this place!
Seriously this place has so many amazing options, highly recommended it
The West End's La Belle Patate is a casse-croûte that specializes in Québécois snack food. It has been open since 2009, following the opening of their original location in Victoria. They also used to have a restaurant in Canmore but now only the two British Columbia locations remain.
I used to visit the Canmore location all the time back when I lived in Edmonton, so I was very curious to see if the food at the Vancouver one was the same. On top of that, I also wanted to compare it to the actual food in Montreal. There were several layers of research at play here!
We visited on a Saturday evening and the whole place was bumpin'. Almost every table was occupied, there was a lineup at the cash, and amazing 80s tunes were filling the air. The room was busy and full of life. The walls are covered with Canadiens memorabilia and the bright chalkboard menu is inviting. We snagged a table and formulated our food plan.
Their main specialty is poutine, of course. The menu boasts both traditional and specialty poutines, 26 of them. Each one is available in three sizes and they even offer an all-you-can-eat poutine situation if you're a real monster. You'll also find classics like steamies and smoked meat on the menu and of course a hot chicken plate. You place your order at the cash and a friendly staff member calls you up once your food is ready.
One thing that we always liked about the Canmore location was that they always had Spruce Beer available. This was one of the first things that I checked at the Vancouver restaurant and sure enough... This soda can be difficult to find!! Even in Quebec! The Cott brand is totally the one that you want, too. This stuff is the best. It tastes like drinking a tree! (And yes, that's a good thing.) On the other hand, they do not carry black cherry soda, which seems like a mistake. However, the rest of their drinks were Pepsi products, which is correct.
Ever a fan of pillowy soft hot dogs, we ordered two Steamie Dogs ($2.50 each). We ordered these "tout garni" and they were served to us spot-on. These are the correct toppings on an all-dressed Montreal steamie; mustard, chopped onion and coleslaw. Sometimes relish, which LBP does do. Points to them for doing this right! On the other hand, I found their bun a bit disappointing. It was not steamed enough and I found it dry, almost as if it had come out of a bag and wasn't steamed at all. The bun is supposed to be warm and soft and this one really wasn't.
They also have something on the menu called a Steamie Grand Slam where for $25 they'll give you 12 steamies. I like where their heads are at with this. I could crush 12 steamies...
We also had to order a poutine, of course. They've got Galvaude on the menu (chicken & peas) which is a total classic and they have an Italian Poutine (with meat sauce) which I used to like to order in Canmore once in a while. And of course a Mish-Mash (pepperoni, bacon, onion, mushrooms & green pepper) which is also a total Montreal term that gets used. I'm also intrigued by their Donair Poutine (tomatoes, onions, sweet sauce & donair meat). They also offer daily poutine features, a different special poutine for each day of the week. We decided to choose the Smoked Meat Poutine ($12.50 for a large size), sticking to a classic. There's nothing like a steaming pile of poutine in front of you! LBP hand-cuts their fries and fries them to a nice golden perfection. I liked their fries a lot, a great combination of crispy and soggy from the gravy. It can be difficult to achieve the perfect balance. The fries were good but I think that they're slightly better at Frenchies. Their sauce brune is very flavourful and vegetarian, which is often the case in Quebec. LBP really shines with their cheese curds; giant abundant chunks! This cheese is fresh, squeaky, melty, and exactly the way that you want it. Perfect cheese! I also loved that the smoked meat was exactly the way that it used to be served in Canmore; in thick, juicy cubes. As soon as I saw the cubes I felt a wave of nostalgia! I'm not sure where they source their smoked meat from but it tastes very good and very legit. The spices are there and the bark on the meat is delicious.
Last but not least, you've gotta order one of their Vachon treats! Vachon started in Quebec in 1923 and I love that LBP sells their cakes! We grabbed a Jos Louis ($1.25). Tastes just the way you remember it when your mom used to put it in your lunch!
La Belle Patate is a great place to grab Quebec favourites in Vancouver. They're doing it pretty well and pretty closely to what you would find in Montreal. I was also happy to see that it was exactly the same as the food that we used to enjoy at their Canmore location. There's a fast food chain in Quebec called La Belle Province which sells the same type of food, so I can appreciate the play on the name. A solid option to deal with your poutine cravings on the west coast!
Truly excellent Poutine choices here. The gravy is excellent, fries are fresh with plenty of potato flavor and the cheese curds are plentiful with the right amount of "squeak" to them. Prices are fair though not exactly cheap for what you get. Value is good. I will definitely be returning here. In my oppinion quite likely the best poutine place downtown, just narrowly better than Fritzs...
•whats a better way to celebrate Canada day? Eat a Poutine!
• you can choose from variety of toppings, from traditional to all the meat in the farm :)
• Montreal Smoked meat: the best in Vancouver! Good amount of tasty meat. My favourite is its not salty at all! The bread, mustard hmmm all good!
• Poutine: good amount of gravy, yum squeeky cheese & lovely fries! Comparable to the poutines in Montreal!
• had a great time here, staff were good
• remember to help the resto recycle by putting your stuff away properly
Poutine in theory is quite simple. Fries, gravy and cheese curds. If you want to up the ante then you start looking at the quality of the cheese (i.e. Does it squeak? This signifies freshness) The poutine at La Belle Patate not only has this but they've taken poutine to the next level with an assortment of different styles.
I could name a few but as they say seeing is believing or in this case taste. Try it, enjoy it and love it.
Absolutely delicious, I am so happy they had a vegetarian option for this poutine. I had poutine in Montreal, where Poutine was created, and I have to say I actually preferred the poutine at this place.
It's sunny out. I thought a nice walk with my husky downtown would be a great start to the day.
I walked across la belle patate. I heard from my friend that this place is on par with east coast standards. Clearly after eating the poutine and Montreal smoked meat sandwich, it was absolutely delicious. The meat is prepped properly and you can tasted the garlic, peppercorns, coriander... Wow. Very bold flavored Montreal deli meat. I'm definitely coming back. The food speaks for itself. I had to buy take out for my other friends to try out. Since I was stopping by their office I called for delivery. What a great experience.
Oh and btw, they have a "all you can eat poutine" special for 20 bucks. For me I don't think I'll ever go for that, but for poutine junkies, I'm sure they'll love it.
Came here pretty late one night to get some poutine, it definitely satisfied my craving and i agree the cheese curds here are different than what im use to. Maybe its the more traditional cheese curds? They have more of a bounce to them or as others describe "squeeky" which is pretty accurate. Next time I would probably get my gravy on the side just because i prefer having that control haha
Whether you are eager for some restaurant food without the hassle of going out to get it or are in need some comfort food wherever you are, foodora may be the service you just need. Online food delivery company, foodora, recently launched in Vancouver. foodora Vancouver has a stellar list of partnering local restaurants including Bau Haus (yes, fine dining!), The Poke Shop, and Little Saigon. Founded in Berlin, Germany, foodora is a well-established food delivery service now operating in 10 countries world-wide with over 6,500 partnering restaurants.
Great poutine. Smoked meat not the best I ve tried, but then again this is Vancouver not Montreal. The place could be nicer, cleaner.
But overall very good
Great place for actual cheese curds. Now that poutine has become more in style there are dozens of places popping up around the city with the same generic melting cheese. It's inauthentic. Fine if you like that, but as someone from Eastern Canada my cheese curds have no business melting or being mushy. Also, real poutine is supposed to have vegetarian or poultry gravy. This makes La Belle Patate one of the only places I'll go for poutine in Western Canada since they seem to actually understand the basics of what makes a poutine a poutine.
So delicious!! They have fresh ingredients and great service. Never disappointed. We came here on a Friday night and ordered the Large La Belle. I usually get my gravy on the side, they're always so good about that. Never make the mistake of going anywhere else. La Belle foreverrrrr!! 😘
Everytime I mention I had poutine at such and such a place, people always tell me or ask me have I tried this place and if not it’s a must go. Finally, I made my way here to see for myself why so much hype. I was using the Bite BC app and was able to score a 2 for 1 at this place! Sweet, so I got 2 specialty poutines for the price of 1 only!
Tried the Smoked Meat Sandwich for the first time in Montreal 2 months ago, was told I'd never find something like this in Vancouver...well I think I just did; the meay sandwich was amazing, succulent smoked meats, just the right amount of savour goodness, and a good portion of meat. The daily special was cheesy steak poutine, me and my buddies demolished it - generous portions, chunky fries, gravy that left you satisfied and wanting more. Service may be a bit slow as it's a small cozy restaurant with one or two cooks, but definitely recommended.
Good food, and reasonable prices. But I was left wondering if the poutine wouldn't all taste better if the cheese curds were just a bit softer and less chewy.
There are so many "poutineries" in DT Vancouver that it's becoming difficult to choose which one to go to. My friend and I dropped by La Belle on a rainy day and tried both traditional and chicken poutine. The combination was delicious however, my personal fav is taking a bite when the cheese curd becomes gooey. I guess I've never had "authentic" poutine before or just not used to the chewy cheese curds. Otherwise the cheese itself was good quality.
If you're craving some grub grab a poutine at this place. Huge selection/variations of poutine. I had the Smoked Meat and it was pretty damn good...cheese curds on point, gravy on point, smoked meat on point.
Sports bar type setting and food - With over 26 different poutine menu items on offer plus hot dogs and the option for all you can eat, it was a tough choice. We ordered the Mexicana and BBQ Galvuade (chicken and peas). We thought both of them were on the better side of average, but by no means the best (the Flying pig was in a much higher league than this). The chicken was processed and the peas looked and tasted like they were from a tin. But it is in a sports bar type setting, and if you go in with those expectations, you'll enjoy it. The service was nice, the prices are reasonable, they have some nice Quebec beers available and have a good recycling system in place. I would recommend this for a casual feed with friends.
Crispy French fries meets savory gravy and cheese curds. I had a dining companion that has tried poutine before and not cared for it; La Belle Patate changed his mind. We tried a few different varieties, and all were good yet I preferred the traditional.
Here's the thing: I really like poutine.
I didn't really care for it so much when I first had it, but now I have come to realize that it's the perfect snack food! Cheesy, crunchy, warm, and gooey.
(That is, until the fries become cold, soggy and turn into slush.)
And what LBP does, is serve you just that. Poutine. Except, they serve only 39202389 different varieties of it.
My friend and I went a-snacking one night, and found ourselves in front of LBP. I faced such a dilemma picking out TWO from their enormous menu, before finally settling for a hamburger poutine and a bacon poutine.
Okay, guys, did you know poutine could become 20 times better with a few pieces of bacon in it (Who was I kidding, right? Everything is better with bacon in it. I really should have known better)?! And who knew that crispy fries went so well with crunchy onions and beef bits?
That said, it's not the cheapest, and I was a little disappointed that the gravy, hot as it was, just didn't seem to melt the cheese curds. Can't comment on authenticity, but that bacon poutine is worth visit again ;)
Pro tip: They have vegetarian gravy.

I tried Canadian Poutine for the first time here (since I'm from faraway Indonesia) and it was truly enjoyable. The price is also okay for my wallet and if I'm back again to Vancity, I will stop by here again for poutine.
It's been awhile since I had a good poutine. It's very good. Would like to try other poutine mixes soon. For sure will be back
Squeaky cheese!. I love the poutine here. The real cheese curds are great and I really like the gravy (and it's vegetarian! Hurray!). Definitely prefer La Belle Patate to Fritz's
I just want to say that my husband and I just tried the Philly Cheesesteak Poutines tonight and they were delicious. We had been wanting to try this place for awhile and were scared off by some of the reviews but decided to take a chance and were pleasantly surprised. The steak and veggies in our poutines were tender and fresh and the addition of the Philly cream cheese made it extra decadent. The large size was very big and could easily be shared between 2 adults. To those who don't like the price at $13.50 with all the steak it was a good deal considering most pubs charge $10 now for plain poutine. We also had a BOGO coupon from our Entertainment Book. The 2 men working were also very nice to us and we would go back again. It was worth the drive from Surrey.
A taste of Quebec!. Finally, a place that serves real Quebec-style poutine!
You can't go wrong with the traditional, an absolute classic.
Real Squeaky Cheese Curds!!!!. I can understand why La Belle Patate has been voted best poutine in Vancouver. Wow ... delicious.
House made fries crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a generous portion of truly squeaky cheese curds, and plenty of veggie gravy. I didn't have a dry mouth or headache afterwards which means I think their gravy does not contain additives or MSG, which is awesome. Larges of the specialty poutines were about $13, but well worth it for the quality.
Our group tried the braised beef, smoked meat, mexicana, and hamburger poutines. I would go for regular poutine or smoked meat. The smoked meat was cubes of deliciously seasoned brisket. I love how the meat had the crust of peppercorns on the outside edge. Meat and poutine heaven. Sunday daily special poutine with bacon and maple syrup intrigued me ... someone please post about it!
My only wish is that they recycle the aluminum take out boxes/paper plates that are used to serve their food.
Une vrais poutine quebecoise
le smokemeat est bon mais pas comme chez schwart a montreal.
des bon hotdog steam
Best Poutine in Vancouver. - French fries made the way it should be
- Gravy is just right and delicious, isn't overly salty
- Cheese curds that have a bite to it and doesn't melt
- Not the cheapest poutine, but reasonably priced for its quality
With those elements combined, you have the best poutine in Vancouver. The rest are just pretenders.
The best poutine around Vancouver. And this is coming from me, a true Québécoise. I love my poutines. And you get a free small poutine after buying 10 poutine. And they are open super late on week ends. Great staff.
Best poutine (so far) in Vancouver. I've probably tried 20+ poutines in Vancouver and this is by far my favourite. Don't waste my time with that "Fritz" nonsense. This is an ACTUAL poutine with BIG SQUEEKY cheese curds. Hats off for not going cheap on the cheese, like so many other places do, and for crispy fries/tasty gravy.
A loyal customer. This is the only poutine joint I habitually return to in Vancouver. I am never disappointed by their food or service. These guys rock.
First-timers looking for meal recommendations: Try the smoked meat poutine with a fully loaded steamie dog on the side.
Growing up in Montreal, I was really happy to find this place. Very authentic and my only complaint is it's pricey, especially for the steamies, but worth it once in awhile.
Best poutine in Vancouver!
Its Good. Nice diner style, and layout. Scrumptuos, filling, and waistline bursting options all over the menu. I went with the chicken poutine. The fries in the poutine were amazing, perfect amount of deep friedness, Now the entire poutine was good but.... way too much gravy, very very limited amount of chicken, I will let that one slide because having chicken on the poutine is like only a buck or 1.25 more expensive. The curds were tasty and plentiful, but fairly firm. Still a tasty poutine.
The Steamie with onion bacon and cheese was an amazing hotdog. Soft fluffy bun, chopped pieces of bacon that were really tasty. The onions on it were almost like in a slaw format which i liked. Now 2 issues with the hotdog. 1, cheap weiner, still tasty, but you can tell. And 2, possibly the biggest downside, the cheese tasted like cheese whiz.... But for 4.25 I am not going to complain, just simply mention. These 2 items and a beer ran me roughly 17 bucks not including tip. I'm torn if wether or not it was a good value, I'll just leave it at that.
This is by far the best poutine in Vancouver and will hold that title probably forever because there really isn't much that can improve it. However the service needs to take itself more seriously. I personally like the guys and I know it's not fine dining but that only goes so far. I've seen many orders forgotten or mixed up and passed off as not a big deal and dealt with a simple mumbled apology. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when it's busy but make it up to them. Offer them something, anything to make sure then experience isn't remembered as a bad one.
I'll always go back and order take out when the service doesn't matter but encourage the owner to take a good look at this problem. I've seen him guilty of it too so self reflection and a top down change is recommended.
Stick to the original. Simple but beautiful.
SAPERLIPOPET!!!! SO GOOD!. I will make the trek from Maple Ridge out here to eat this poutine. I am always impressed with how good it is. People who have not tried "Traditional Poutine" from Quebec tend to shrugg and say its just fries and gravy.
At some fast food places like KFC and A&W the poutine is just fries and gravy....but here? OH MY WORD!!! It is incredible, the curds...the gravy...the fries.....
Go eat some now!!
Just went to the La Belle Patate for the first time.
Great sandwich - poutine and au caramel... haven't had a au caramel for many years ....
Best I have had outside La Belle Province
Authentic Poutine. Only tried the Chicken Poutine in a small portion and there was a bit too much gravy which kind of made the fries a little soggy.
The cheese curds were indeed squeaky and tasty so it kind of all pans out in the end.
Best poutine in Vancouver. I've eaten highly recommended poutines in Montreal, I've gone to Fritz, and I've had Belgian Fries. I'd say LBP tops Fritz and BF, and equals that of the popular poutines in Montreal (La Banquise, especially).
The poutine here is awesome - good crispy fries (well, as crispy as they can be smothered in gravy) that actually taste like potatoes (unlike some other popular poutine places in Vancouver...), and nice squeaky cheese curds that DO NOT MELT. If you want melted cheese, go to New York Fries or KFC.
I always go for the traditional poutine now. I tried a vegetarian one and there were hardly any toppings to make it worth the extra money.
Oh, and the Guedille sandwich (steamie bun w/ fries and coleslaw) is actually really good. It's warm, soft, and has a nice pickled flavor from the coleslaw that balances the crispy, salty, greasiness of the fries.
Thumbs up. Let's put things into perspective here. People complain about the gravy being too thick, the cheese not to be squeaky enough or the fries to be saugy! Well I have a secret for you : there are places in Montreal that use mozzarella shreds and are really bad, which is *thank G-d* not the case for La Belle Patate!
There is no actual standart for such a dish to be perfect! It varies to anyone taste-buds and personal preferences... (...Et je sais de quoi je parle, je suis originaire du Québec mes amis)
Not only that I am proud for this place to be run by a fellow French-Canadian on the west coast, most Poutine or snack bar restaurants in Montreal are owned, run and operated by Greeks!!!
Their poutine is authentic and the restaurant makes me feel home every time I go !
Poutine. The poutine is a traditional style dish.
I grew up eating poutine, they make a decent poutine. I wouldn't say it's the greatest but I give it a 7.5 on 10.
The fries are rather saugy and the gravy could be better.
It's quite expensive as well.
The steamer dog is great.
It's a good place to go if you want a poutine and a hot dog.
Reasonable poutine for Vancouver (I haven't had truly good poutine since I was in Quebec) with a good variety of toppings. Creepy neighborhood in a rainbow-flaggy kinda way if you know what I mean ;-) but that's Vancouver, I guess!
Best poutine. Got the classic poutine and was really impressed by the generous helping of yummy squeaky cheese curds. the fries themselves seemed good but not great - maybe a little greasy and not very crispy, but it was hard to tell if that was because of the gravy. i got the small and don't know how folks manage a bigger plate. it was absolutely delicious, but very rich.
Had the traditional poutine today, thought it was a little pricy at first, but I guarantee I will be back! The fries were perfect, and I loved the gravy and quality of cheese, although I wished the cheese was more melty. Nonetheless divine, will be back!
What a Suprise!. I'm not sure how my husband heard about this place but he was adamant that we went to La Bell Patate before our visit to Granville Island, which is not as inspiring as it used to be. After paying a ridiculous $4 for parking because I can't parallel park we headed into this neat little place.
James had 1. Traditional Poutine. I think because he's going to go down the list. The guys running the place said I'll know where to find my husband if he disappears for a couple of hours! I had 7. BBQ Smoked Meat Poutine.
As a teenager, 30 years ago, my friends and I lived off fries and gravy. Everything fries and gravy. I had forgotten how goooood fries and gravy were until I had this. I really enjoyed it. To be honest I have nothing to compare it to as I have evidently never experienced proper poutine. I was curious about the curds not being melted and James said that's not how it is. My first curd squeaked in my mouth! Literally squeaked and I giggled as I quickly ate another one and guess what? It squeaked too! I was cracking myself up. So not only are my taste buds getting a trip, but my ears are too!
This place is what it is, they are doing one thing and doing it well. I do have some issue though. I would have preferred a plate and a proper fork. I just hate throwing plastic and aluminum into the garbage. Sorry guys! I appreciate how small your back area is and dishwashing is probably the furthest thing from your mind, but you do recycle your bottles!
With that said, we'll be back. Not too much though as it's not promoting the healthy lifestyle I am supposed to be living!!
I can only imagine how busy this little place is on a late night after the bars have closed. Sit at the large wood framed windows and people watch, satisfy the after bar munchies and enjoy the funky little vibe. Grab your food to go and enjoy along the way.
FANTASTIQUE !!. If you miss la belle province and you need a touch of home as much as I do, you MUST go eat at La Belle Patate! The most amazing thing happens once you walk through the door; you see the decor and smell the mouth-watering fries and you think you've walked into a steamie shack in Quebec! The cook has everything exactly right from the fresh steamed dogs to the most amazing poutine!! Don't miss your chance for a home cooked meal away from home and visit OFTEN!!! The prices are great and the food and atmosphere are fantastique!!!!
Tasty!. Just ate there today, after reading several reviews. At first I was skeptical of a vegetarian gravy, but it was very tasty, light and seasoned perfectly. It did get a tad bit salty towards the end of eating, when I had eaten most of the fries and the ones left were soaked in gravy at the bottom (but hardly anything to complain about!) The gravy was a bit abundant as well, but I personally don't mind soggy/soft fries.
The fries are fresh and REAL potatoes - not frozen. The cheese curds were also abundant and amazing... squeaky and delightful. I did wish there was a slight bit more in melting action happening, for a bit more stringiness. I think this was because there were so many cheese curds on top, and it was a bit difficult to drown them in the gravy and fry mixture :) (which is not a bad thing!) But don't get me wrong -- this is certainly NOT a complaint of the 'needs to be melty cheese' variety (I just want a slight bit of stringiness). I hate those poutines with the mozza curds that just 'goo' everywhere, and really don't taste like cheese curds at all. To those who complain about cheese curds that don't melt (it might have been here or dinehere.ca), I think that is what they picture when they come here. Geez! Those are not real cheese curds nor are they used on authentic poutines! Squeaky and firm is GOOD.
Overall, I loved my poutine and would definitely come back.
GOOD Authentic Pountine. YEAH OK - not healthy or heart-smart but very-VERY tasty.
So many variations and ice-kold Molson Export also. Happened 2 B here during Habs-Bruins play-off game - WOW!
Would come back
I live right around the corner from this spot. Best in the city, I have eaten poutine all over this city, they all don't come close to the greatness of this one. I usually stick to the traditional but sometimes mix it up.
The owner is a good guy, and the staff is very friendly. they also have a great beer section for that "one more" before home time after a big night. Huge portions for good deals.
Nice Spot to Step Into. They have one menu board with practically all of the non-poutine items. Then... there's the three menu boards with JUST poutine. How can you go wrong? :o)
It was a great place for us to step into, have a quick bit and enjoy. Three of us split a Montreal Smoked Meat Platter, Poutine, and hot dog for the kid. Smiles all around. The hot dog was actually really good.
Best Poutine in the city. As a Montrealer, I can vouch that this is the best Poutine in Vancouver! And no line-ups! This restaurant is nice to sit-in, it has nice decor, not just some counter.
The curds are delivered fresh every Thursday, they are made by a Quebecer out on a farm in BC (2 hrs away). They also have a good selection of Unibroue beer.
Although the staff are not french, they are still very friendly and like to hear comments/suggestions.
Straight from Montreal. This place has the best Poutine that I have had outside of Montreal. I would recommend people to eat here for great comfort food, it also has a small selection of beers as well as Quebec beers.
Nailed It!. Being a born and bred Montrealer, La Belle Patate had a lot to live up to. Imagine my disappointment when they didn't know what a Poutine Quebecoise was! On the positive, I'm happy to say they've pretty much nailed the authenticity -- the fries are spot-in and the gravy is delicious, but I deduct points for un-melted cheese curds (although having your curds be squeaky instead of gooey will likely come down to personal preference). One thing is for sure, this is as close as you're going to get to real poutine in the downtown core.
Hmmm gravy. Well this was the first time I had ever gone to La Belle Patate and my poutine experience is somewhat limited to New York fries, Burger King poutine and Fritz
We ordered a medium sized breakfast poutine containing eggs, bacon, onions squeaky cheese and lots of gravy. I'm not sure if authentic poutine is like this, but I found that the fries were quite drenched in gravy. The gravy itself was pretty good though, I didn't find it too overly salty, but I thought that they skimped out on the bacon a bit.
The squeaky cheese was pretty neat, and wasn't overly salty, the texture was definitely chewy. a refreshing change to the usual melty melty type of cheese. Having eggs in the poutine was definitely a first, but I didn't like the spongy texture as it didn't feel like i was eating actual real eggs. Which makes me wonder how they actually made it that way.
Overall my craving for poutine was satisfied and will return again should the occasion arise.
BEST POUTINE IN TOWN???. I don't know if i can say this is best poutine in town... I think their is food is so so ... I can't wow their food...
But definitely their menu has a good variety of items... lots of different type of poutine ..
Squeaky happy memories. I have to be truthful, i was a little worried about this gem, since the previous 3 restaurants at this address had all folded within months. I walked in. I heard the music that is Quebecquois. I breathed a happy sigh.
when i lived in Quebec i used to go to La Belle Province (a fast food chain). There i'd have poutine with the bbq gravy. tangier, slightly sweet, utterly amazing. I like that the Patate has that as an option as well as the gravy you can find elsewhere. I also love that there are myriad choices that I had yet to see outside of Quebec!
the poutine is delicious. the fries are a good size. they're crispy and hold up well to the gravy. there is a generous amount of curd. and my god, is the curd orgasmically tasty. just a bit of saltiness, squeak, and melt, but holds up its curdy shape and integrity. spectacular. The gravy is a bit salty but works perfectly with the potato and a glass of beer.
if you're alone, get the small (i had to share it with 2 people for a snack). if you're insane, get the large. or the all you can eat poutine. but really, you should bring a defibrilator and pads if that's the case.
the only thing keeping this from a 5-star is this: I wish is that they had sliced chicken poutine with gravy and peas. my life would have been complete.
(Real) poutine at its best.. "Waah waah, I like Fritz' or Belgian Fries' poutine bettter." No you don't, you like their mozarella "fauxtine".
LBP serves delicious ***AUTHENTIC*** poutine just the way you'd get it in Quebec. If you don't like authentic poutine with lots of gravy and real cheese curds, don't blame the restaurant; educate yourself on what real poutine is.
If you want something different, give the donair poutine a shot, you'll love it if you like Halifax donairs (not the "Halifax donairs" that are served in Vancouver but the actual Halifax donairs ie good quality donair with the works).
Ahhh poutine! House made fries, gravy and real cheese curds, what's not to like?? And La Belle Patate has the best poutine I have tasted in town. And over 20 varieties? That just can't be beat. Highly recommended!
Just plain good. La Belle Patate is fast becoming one of my favourite fast food places in vancouver, unfortunately for my health.
I was very impressed the gravy is completely veggie compatible - you can still get meat gravy you just have to ask for 'BBQ' - however I have to say I like the veggie wheat based (I think) equally as much.
The smoked meat is superb, and also fantastic in some of the 30 odd different Poutine combinations they offer. So far I haven't been disappointed with any of my picks.
Even the pineapple milkshake kicked ass (it's only pineapple juice and ice cream but it's damn good!)
Overall I have no complaints about this place. Even though it technically is fast food it really doesn't feel like it. The base ingredients are carefully selected and the food is excellently prepared, giving it a kind of comforting home cooked feel to it.
Go check it out; for me it's the best poutine in town.
Wow!. This is the real deal. I'm from Montréal and been living in Vancouver for more than 10 years and was on the lookout for food like this since I moved here. I had an Italian poutine and thought I'd died and went to heaven. The curds were the real deal and no, they are not supposed to melt like mozzarella would. Congratulations to the owner Pascal Cormier and his staff!
Fresh, tummy-warming goodness. I suppose the first sign of of this place's authenticity was the Montreal Canadiens banner hanging beside the kitchen and the kitchen staff speaking in French.
Still, I couldn't help thinking of poutine as 'fast food'. Yet when I tried the poutine at this place, I realized that I couldn't be more wrong - at least not here. Here, the poutine is a genuine, home-cooked, filling and satisfying meal. Everything was fresh and well made from the bottom up, beginning with the French fries, gravy and of course, the chewy, juicy and cool cheese curds. The owner told me he buys the cheese curds fresh from the Fraser Valley, so those who want to eat local poutine can't do better than this place.
Poutine is available in small, medium and large sizes to fit all appetites. I had the poutine with chicken and peas topping. Excellent.
They are also licensed with Quebec beer, which is worth a try. I hope they bring in some local microbrews.
Good poutine, great smoked meat. I loved the smoked meat. The bread, meat and mustard were excellent, and served in the right proportions. Probably Vancouver's best, I cannot say any more on the subject.
The poutine was very good. The one knock I have against the place is as follows: the curds did not melt. The owner went into why with me, saying that he sought a higher quality cheese curd that wouldn't melt. Very well if that's what floats your boat, but I like melty cheese in my poutine.
Otherwise, I give the place deux pouces en haut!
The squeaky cheese was an interesting experience for me, as I've never had squeaky cheese on a poutine before! It.. well, squeaked and was squishy and chewy. I'm used to my cheese melting into gooey bits in my poutine, but I liked it. The meatlovers came with bits of sausage, minced beef, and bacon thrown in. It was a little on the salty side, but not overwhelmingly so.
Poutine with a French man. It’s been a while since we’ve had poutine. Me three months, he three weeks. The benefits of living with a French Canadian is that when he has his weekly poutine craving, you are able to tag along for some of the cheesy and gravy good stuff. As I have previously written, having tried many a poutine; a variety of fries, a gallery of gravies, and a collection of cheeses; all from a multitude of restaurants and bars, this hands down is my favourite. Though a large influence on my declaration comes from the opinion of the “Frenchy” I was dining with and only come here with. This is his choice for the most authentic and the most true to the Québécois spirit.
My favourite place for poutine in Vancouver!
I must say one of the best poutine I’ve had ever. Always fresh, hot and tasty that comes with really friendly service. If you’re craving some poutine take your time and go there.
First restaurant I tried as a tourist and was a huge fan. Poutine is definitely junk food but it's awesome. The customer service was excellent, plenty of laughs exchanged and got a recommend on the traditional poutine. Definitely would recommend to others.
You can't go to Vancouver and not try the city's Poutine. Luckily this place was as good as people claim. We got the smoked meat Poutine, which is one of the most popular dishes. Excellent flavor, fries still crunchy despite being covered in gravy. Everything you hope for in a bite of poutine. Loved it. Also if you can get a bar seat at the window facing the street, it's a wonderful people watching spot to see the hustle and bustle of Davie Street.
My boy just started liking poutine so I got him to try it here. He liked it. Great service, lots of great choices and very friendly.
My girlfriend and I eat here all the time, and it's absolutely delicious. Being french Canadian, I can assure you this is a REAL steamie (just like lafleurs) and REAL poutine. We frequently make the trip from the valley out here! Worth it every time.
Favorite poutine joint in the city, hands down.
This is how it's supposed to be. Moving forward, I use this place as a barometer to set the bar on how I judge other poutine places. "Is it better than La Belle Patate?" so far, the answer has been "No".
Aside from the top notch food, it's a great vibe inside. Very casual and laid back. The owner, as well as everyone who I've spoken to that works there, are all very helpful and laid back people.
These guys (and gals) know what they're doing. Really can't recommend it enough. They put the perfect ratio of gravy/fries/cheese curds and you really realize after going here how a lot of other spots don't get it right. This place is literally the definitive example of it being done the right way. And with quality ingredients.
If you want a true classic done the right way, La Belle is the place.

The best poutine place in Vancouver..
Left poutine is the baked potato one, Comes with bacon bits, sour cream and green onions. My personal favorite.
Wanted to try something new and got the meat lovers one. Pretty good, but nothing beats the baked potato one.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the place, staff are nice, easy going and know what they are doing.
For anyone wanting to eat a poutine, definitely eat here.
Poutine apparently means a delicious mess and it certainly is. The most crunchy, soft, golden homemade fries topped with gravy and cheese curds. Canada, you won my heart with this one! If you haven't tried poutine, you need to, and if you have then add this spot to your list of best poutines.
The people here are so friendly, the spot is laid back and efficient (perfect for a quick bite) and the food is simple but packed with mounds of flavor. I didn't know I came to Canada to fall in love but as I sat romantically looking out from their counter seating with the open windows and enjoyed fork fulls of cheesy, messy fries, I did.
