Review Jules Casual French Bistro - Vancouver

Ingrid Zeng
We went on a day that only have the dine out menu. The three course meal was delicious but not exceptional. I particularly liked what my boyfriend had. On my end, the quiche was a little dry and the shepherds pie had a strong bitter after taste from the spinach/mushroom that I couldn’t get over with. As a French restaurant, they had really good dessert and ambience was great for a casual date.

Our second time dining at Jules and it was exceptional! We had the tasting menu - the food and wine pairings were perfect. Fantastic service. The vibe is so cozy! We will be back.

Personal favourite was the French onion soup and the seared Hokkaido scallops with mushroom risotto, lobster oil. The lobster barque was good also. Service and atmosphere was calming and very nice.

Intimate refined but relaxed dining. Gorgeous food and lovely service. My husband had the sole special and loved it. I had the scallops and risotto, rich and delicious. They know their wine here, they note the grape varietals on the menu.

This place was so cozy and nice. Service is amazing. Food was great too. I ordered the scallop risotto, French onion soup, escargot. All very delicious and good proportions. Their bread was the best too!

This place is adorable and sooooo delicious. We needed something to warm us up after walking around Gastown and followed the reviews about the fantastic French onion soup…and we were not disappointed!! Bursting with flavor and so filling. Also, a great wine list and our server had great recommendations. Service is impeccable and the place itself is so cute! And they were playing classic cafe music so the vibe was flawless. We went at lunch so it was much quieter, only us and a few other patrons. (Two of which were a couple of very rowdy, loud guys who sat at the bar and talked the ear off the servers…let me tell you, the waitress had the patience of a god, lol.) Will definitely be coming back whenever we’re in Vancouver!

Wife and I first time dining at Jules tonight. Jules has been on our radar for quite some time. It did not disappoint. Everything was great. From the fresh hot in house bread with butter to the excellent service - 5 stars. Our favourite was the steel head trout and creme brulee. Steel head was cooked just right, moist and succulent. Creme brulee had an amazing torched crust and perfect sweet / bitter balance. Portions are generous and execution of culinary skills are top notch. You will not leave hungry but well fed. We’ve eaten at various French restaurants here and also east coast Quebec. This is one of the better value while also providing competent French cooking places in Canada. We did encounter a small incident with our salad (Small piece of plastic film) and informed the server, who promptly let the kitchen know. No big deal we thought but for record’s sake thought we’d let them know. The staff were very sincere, even later bringing 2 unexpected complimentary glasses of dessert cognac - delicious by the way. Come here, give them a try. We will be returning.

Love.. love..love this place! The staff were amazing! Super friendly and helpful! Super cozy and brought me back to Paris!! I had the special.. it was a pan seared sable fish over a garlic oil linguine dish! Can't wait to come back!!

Cockroach was crawling all over the table. Do not recommend anyone to eat here!!! Looked through Vancouver Coastal Health’s inspection report for Jules and they are not in compliance. History of pest problems in the inspection reports. Servers do not care. No apology from staff nor manager, was like it was the norm to them. Disgusted!

Jules Bistro is tucked in the heart of Gastown in Vancouver. Among many fancy establishments, it was nice to see a casual French restaurant. The decor decor had rustic charm, and the staff was overall friendly and professional. For dinner, we decided to go with the value option – two course meal for $29.

Having never visited Paris, France, I think this is a good indication of the food, the people and vibe of their bistros. Tiled floors, simple elegance and staff that graciously receive you at the door where they take your coats, it all envelopes French dining. Opened since 2007, Jules Bistro recently celebrated their anniversary with special menus.

What a charming looking bistro this is. The dining room had aged brown wood and dimmed lighting from ornate chandeliers, it was Brooklyn meets Paris.

Our appetizers consisted of french onion soup and a country paté and we were happy with the flavour of both dishes. Onion soup wasn't overly cheesy like other establishments, it could have been a bit hotter but was still delicious. Surprisingly, the paté was quite large for an appetizer. My wife really enjoyed the paté and the accompaniments of cherry compote, balsamic, hot mustard, and pickles.

My main was the lamb shank with couscous and my wife had the duck confit served on salad. The lamb was flavourful and tender. The couscous was cooked perfectly. I just thought the sauce was on the salty side. Presentation for me was just too dark. Not much of a contrast on the plate. I also ordered a side of mushroom that also added more darkness to my plate. The duck leg was nicely cooked, crispy skin and juicy meat. But my wife said she found the dish on the whole overly rich and salty because of the creamy dressing and prosciutto in the salad. A vinaigrette would've brightened the dish and the prosciutto wasn't necessary.

We ended dinner on a high note with a sour cherry clafoutis. A clafoutis is a classic French dessert that is a cross between a custard and cake, traditionally made with cherries. It was served warm with a scoop of buttermilk sorbet. There were plenty of cherries and the baked custard was nearly the perfect texture.

The restaurant would be rated at 3.5 stars in my opinion. I rounded up due to the generous portions (always a plus), professional service, and having clafoutis on the menu. Not enough restaurants offer it.

Will definitely come back.

I absolutely love the atmosphere here. It really does feel like you've stepped into a restaurant in France. It's classic cozy heritage dining. I also liked how the menus was small and well executed. There was enough options for varying tastes, but every dish we had was great. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare, which is rare in Vancouver, lol. The gravy was rich, but not over powering. The fish was simple and delicious. I will definitely come back for their dinner menu. Only off part of our experience was the servers attire. I swear she was wearing pajamas. While friendly, it was just unprofessional.

Cane here couple of times for French food. First time, the food was exceptional. I ordered the duck in cranberry sauce and chocolate cake. The duck dish is special dish of the night and it was excellent and absolutely delicious. The second time we went there, we ordered duck dish, salmon, escargot and tiramisu. The duck confit is bit bland and needs more seasoning but the escargot and tiramisu were good. The bonus was the handsome waiter who waited our table and he was courteous. Tried not to stare but can't help it. I hadn't have any bad experience going there and overall I enjoy the food there.

I rushed in a bit behind for a friend's birthday dinner. The service was very professional, even though I was plainly dressed. I had the bistro salad + chicken. It was served slightly warm, which really brought out the flavour of the cherry tomatoes while still allowing the chicken breast to have a subtle presence. This would make a perfect lunch meal. The ambiance and service encouraged relaxed conversation. I will return for brunch soon.
MMDC
Quaint little restaurant with a nice atmosphere for casual gatherings. The red pepper carpaccio salad was perfectly balanced in flavours. The mussels were juicy and delicious. The ribeye was divine and melted in your mouth.

It was a very hot day and we asked for a table outside. It was a very nice outdoor area but I honestly wasn't too excited about the menu.
This was the first meal I ever had in Canada and it was so much better than I had ever expected!

The scrambled eggs were amazing and the gazpacho was especially aromatic (I have tried a whole lot of gazpachos and very few have pleased me like this one). The rest of the family enjoyed the meal as well.
The server was nice and she had a cute french accent. The indoor seats were also nice.
Initially I thought it was too pricey but I later realized that food in Canada is expensive in general, so this place actually has very fair prices.

Jules Bistro Vancouver is local French restaurant in Gastown – 216 Abbott St. We spent a little afternoon at this neighborhood gem over some Foie gras, Lobster & prawn bisque with croutons, rouille and gruyere cheese and Escargots bourguignonne with garlic and parsley butter. We were seated by the window just as we had remembered. It’s amazing how lively and charming Gastown gets when the sun is out. I’m so glad the rainy stretch is behind us!
Klaudia Puseljic
Lovely little French bistro in the heart of Gastown. Their Croque-Madame and Moules frites are two of my favourite lunch entrees! Definitely worth a try, however the staff can often times seem a tad bit snooty or pretentious, but overall it's a pretty good atmosphere.

We were taken to 3 different tables by the host and at each one the head waiter screamed "no". We were tired and hungry so decided to stay. Great French onion soup came right away but our empty bowels took quite awhile to be cleared away. The tiny salad had no dressing on it. Overcooked tenderloin and ratatouille. Did I mention the really slow service?

Horrible host/manager. We arrived at 7:05 for a 7:15 reservation. Two other girls arrived after us. As the host returned from seating the couple in front of us, the two girls behind us tried to rudely push past. My wife , seeing what was happening, pushed back and said 'We have a reservation for 7:15". The host abruptly replied "You're reservation is for 7:30" and sat us down at the bar. The two rude girls, who seemed to know the restaurant workers were seated immediately by the window out front. I know I made a reservation for 7:15. My wife was very upset, and the waiter working the bar knew it. We were seated shortly after, at the back by the toilet, with the explanation that those two girls had made their reservation 3 months ago. We never formally complained, so why make up some B.S. excuse. Also, since when did a reservation become more important based on when it was made. Who writes down the time when a reservation is made. So insulting. The waiter, who I think knew what happened, was very attentive. We ordered the rib eye steak which was OK at best. In fairness the Rib eye was $32 , so you get what you pay for. Once again the waiter was very good , so we tipped him well. I had read about this RUDE host/ manager in a couple of reviews prior to coming here. He almost ruined our night. We will never come back because of him.

The people at Jules describe it as “a casual French bistro” and that’s a good way of describing the simple brick walls and tile floors. There’s no pretension here, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not also dripping with elegance. There are the chandeliers, for instance, and the wait staff who greet you in French.

Rude!. Booked dinner here for a group of 5 on Saturday night. We arrived 7 minutes late snd the manager told us he gave our table away as we were late. Pretty outrageous after 7 minutes! But oh well, we decided not to be difficult and wait for the next table as we were told one should free up in a few minutes. 15 minutes later we politely asked how long the table might take still, manager was very rude and said he doesn't know and we don't have to wait if we don't want to. When we said we might look for another place, he said we should, and so we left. He just couldn't have care less.

Good for Ambiance and French Onion Soup on a Cold Day. Went to Jules twice in the past 6 days (for work and for a birthday) and not too impressed with the Chef's heavy hand with the salt (with the split pea soup, duck and very odd tasting poutine) or with the older Waiter/Manager (he's a very nervous fellow who makes people feel uncomfortable. It was like getting waited on by Woody Allen. One look at him and I didn't want to bother to mention how salty my food was).

The French Onion Soup and Escargot were nice, beet salad passable and I've got a lot of questions about what the Melting Chocolate Cake , Sour Cherry Clafoutis and Roasted Pineapple, Star Anise Syrup and Gingerbread Ice Cream were supposed to taste like.

In short: Jules is good for ambiance and french onion soup on a cold day but not much else.

HORRIBLE MANAGER. I reserved a table for four to celebrate my good friend's Birthday. The dinner was reserved for 8.30 and we arrived at 8.25 to be sure.
20 min passed and nobody had acknowledged us waiting. I asked the host how much longer it would be, and he notified us that their guests are paying. Fortunately few bar stools became available, where we got to wait. While sitting there, I noticed that nobody was nearly finished with their food or drinks. Therefore, nobody was waiting. My friend's husband spoke to the manager, and the manager screamed at my friend and told him that perhaps he should ask customer to leave. At 9.10 (40 min passed our reservation) he informed us that a table is paying, however this table he showed us was for 2 people.
The manager never apologized even once, and was giving us attitude. Having been in the service industry for years, I told the manager that his behavior was not appreciated. We have been waiting for 45 minutes and nobody has even apologized. We haven't been offered anything, nor been given an estimated time. The manager screamed at us and said "well you can see that a table just opened up, do you want it or not?" At that point, I would have rather had hot dog from the hot dog stand than to eat at his restaurant. NEVER going there agian, NEVER recommending that place to anyone. His staff seemed even embarrassed over him.

Loved it here. Went here tonight with a large group for a birthday and was pleasantly surprised by our lovely evening. Despite the large group, service was top notch, and food was most excellent. Ambiance is great, and the live piano was such a great touch. I definetly will be back and bring. Oh and prices are very reasonable for the quality of food. Highly recommended.

Service was good despite previous reviews. Food quality mixed. My husband loved his modules frites ( although said they're better @ Twisted Fork). My duck confit came out pale and flabby without crispy skin. Good wine and nice ambiance.

Great Service ! Great Food !. The BEST French Onion Soup I have ever had.

Great food. Jules is a great place for a date, or just going out with friends. The food is very tasty and reasonably priced.

Had supper with two other friends. The meal at Jules was fine but they still have that very grumpy old man as a host.. I was there over a year ago and he was there and last night he was still there. Amazing that he still is on staff..
It is a nice Cafe to spend an evening of dining and wining if you can ignore his comments...
Big Town
Fair warning. I hesitate to make this comment as I don't see anyone else talking about it
but the place smells mouldy, like there was a flood or there is a water ingress issue somewhere in the building.
I noticed it years ago and noticed it repeatedly up until my last recent visit.
Hence I won't dine inside, and that's too bad as it's a charming room. But funky smells put me off dining.
The solution is to dine on the lovely patio, if it's open. Food is acceptable.
Service is typical Vancouver with a level of non-professional apparent:
I was scolded for sitting out on the patio while it was apparently not open. There's a way to approach your customers.
Want French? Go to Le Crocodile for impeccable service, a fantastic daily lunch special and you will leave feeling very special too.

Excellent meal and service. My husband and I had dinner at Jules on June 25. It was a delightful meal with many extra touches. I had the plat du jour, a bargain for the price. Very nice gazpacho, ribeye steak cooked as requested, enough fries for two, the chocolate terrine dessert was wonderful. My husband had the duck leg and thoroughly enjoyed it. A nice touch was the candied orange peel served as a complement to the coffee. Highly recommend whether you are visiting or live in Vancouver.

The atmosphere and service were very good. But the food was really just mediocre and somewhat disappointing. We had an enjoyable evening, but we won't be going back.

Love this place. I'm a former restaurant reviewer and a pretty solid cook/baker, so am not one to dole praise out with wanton abandon. That said, EVERY time I come to Vancouver I make sure I dine at Jules. It's hands-down the best steak & frites I've ever had. Love the generous, old fashioned bread & butter (unsalted!), love the discrete but cool service, love the attentive yet hands-off approach of Michael at the front door. So many nice features (like it's open 2-5pm so you can have an in-between meal if you've postponed or skipped lunch) and such great atmosphere and consistent food--all at prices that are 100% reasonable. Such a great place!

The Best!. Fabulous place where the people care about you and the Food. Absolutely fresh and of the highest quality!!! Can you imagine the work that must go into getting this product out to the general public? These people should get some kind of an award.

Fire him B4 he put your business down!!!. On valentine's day ,feb 14/2014,my wife ,my 2 kids, my mother in law and I try to have a bit @ Jules without reservation,i precise. My wife went to ask the Maitre D if luck was on our side for a bite...Then doctor Jekill storm at us:What you guys are thinking, this is Jules here,it's Valentine's day and you guys come and expect to eat here just like that! Can you move cause I have some people with reservation coming. The guy very very rude, the kind of person that think that they are the best and his ego has no match except his ankles! It was so unprofessional behavior and so mentally disturbing that we left very concerned and my wife was fuming inside while I was ready to go back inside to insult him the best I could but with 2 kids and a full restaurant,i deceided to walk away and not feeding the bear!!!
Sad to see that the owner that cooks in the back does not know that there is a black sheep working at his restaurant .The maître D is around 50-55years old with curly hair and I just found out that he used to work at the Opus hotel and he was already known to have a nasty sharpy edge.By the way I am a business owner in kits and French as well!!!
C'est la vie malheureusement mais je continuerai a aller a Salade de fruits a la place,Costumers service is key of success!

Generous servings. Daily special: pan seared scallops $26 - for 6 pieces of big scallops with salad. Even though it doesn't sound a lot but I found it satisfying (maybe coz I wasn't hungry that day too). Vanilla Crème Brulée $8 - this is big. Some other restaurants just serve it half of what they did. The owner said they don't have the software for separate bills. They also said they haven't upgraded it since 1988 (mmm...i don't think so. I don't think they have printout bills back then. More importantly, it says HST on it). They offer bigger portions but the quality of food was just okay.

How can we ever return to Jules!. For a long time, since our offices are nearby, we were regular though not necessarily frequent lunch clients. Good food, pleasant customer service and convenient location brought us back. One evening my husband and I decided to pop in for a quick something off the menu before heading to theater. We arrived, asked for guidance regarding the possibility of a fitting us in since we had to be in and out in 35 minutes. The tongue lashing we got about not interfering (by virtue of our humble request as to whether we COULD be in and out,) with service to other seated guests just about bowled us over. We backed out and shook our heads in shock at such negative treatment. A simple yes or no is all we wanted. As a result of such breakdown in customer service, especially towards previously loyal diners, we can never return to the restaurant. Hopefully others will not experience what we did.

Okay food, TERRIBLE service. We had reservations, and still needed to wait 15 minutes to be seated. Once shown to our table, they wouldn't give us water until all members of our party had arrived...one was late. We were not allowed to taste wines before buying them (even ones sold by the glass), and once our drinks ran out we were not asked if we required anything else. I finished half of my dinner (a reasonably good salmon entree), and stopped eating with the intention of bringing the rest home to have for lunch the next day. When the server came to clear the table, he placed other dishes from the table on top of my leftovers without even looking at me so that I could ask for them to be wrapped up. When I complained, I was told there was nothing that could be done about it.

Yeser. Yaser, the owner/cook/server, is a good cook but what will strike you even more is the friendly and cheerful he creates by hiring the right waitresses. A of people become regulars and come back even from far away to cehck out the gorgeous women.
The food is always tasty, prices very affordable. I wasn't too happy about the busy state but then I'm rather picky about it and the restaurant is popular. The waitress and women are 10/10. It's sure worth trying! Meet me here for work lunches

THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND OWNERSHIP EVER!!. Honestly, I cannot believe how a person like this owns a business in Vancouver. He is despicable, rude and obviously has serious personal issues. The service was TERRIBLE and the food was mediocre. I will be letting everyone know how much this place is a poor excuse for a public business. I left no tip and almost left without paying the bill because the owner was so rude. Unbelievable. Don't do it.

RUDE !!!!! RUDE!!! RUDE!!!. Avoid going to Jules bistro. The DIVA who runs the restaurant is full of attitude and complex. It seems that he has a mission to ruin your night/day. I eat a lot in restaurants ( 5 days out of 7 )and I have never ever seen such a rude person in charge of a restaurant. Do yourself a favor if you are reading this review: if you tend to not pay attention to the reviews, please pay attention to this one and DO NOT GO TO JULES BISTRO!!! I promise You won't regret.

Terrible Service From the Owner!. We had made a reservation and the table was available for May on a Saturday night in 2012.

As he walked us to our table my friend was chatting to the owner. Now my friend has a loud voice and the owner actually covered his ears and said stop shouting in my ear! It was embarrassing as he did that In front of our entire party...Then he further told my friend how his loud voice ruined his day. We all were shocked by the owners behavior.

Wow all this disrespectful behavior from the owner why is he even in the service bussiness.

We have never seen a more rude, inappropriate owner of a restaurant than this guy.

Needless to say we all walked out and went to Boneta which was amazing!

Best Restaurant in Vancouver. Jules is the best restaurant in Vancouver, hands down. You seriously can't beat the food quality, portion sizes, ambience, location and price. Staff is generally pretty good. Not the best, unless you get that one older guy (don't know his name) who is always there - he's fantastic, but I've never had bad service. Only complaint is the washroom. They really need to get rid of the table in front of the washroom door as it's super close to the table and really annoying when ppl are going in and out of it all the time, and the hinge doesnt work so its constantly left open, which is gross. I was pretty pissed about that as this happened to me at my last visit on Valentine's Day, and I'm a regular customer of theirs so I was less than impressed. But, like I say, everything else is AMAZING. Special cocktails are ridiculously strong and not so great so I'd stick to what you know. Great wine and full bar so any cocktail you want, they can make. Foodwise, everything is DELICIOUS. Especially the duck, pork chop, escargot and pate.
Matiu
Jules to me is an enigma, h the bartender is charismatic and endearing with his fun and delicious cocktails, the serving staff on the other hand are cold 'to cool for school' hipsters. The food is consistent along with reasonable wine pricing at least it does not disappoint on that level.
Pogostickcowboy
Been her a couple times. Atmosphere is good. Service great. Food is ok but I had higher expectations. Great portion sizes. Not the greatest place out there but good value and something a little different.
The Hungry Nomad
RUDE & DISRESPECTFUL. WOW. what can i say about this place? in a city with amazing restaurants at every corner there is NO need to put up with this sort of service anywhere. After all we are not in France and even in France they don't treat you as badly as the host treated us last night. Needless to say we ended up turning around and leaving to Cobre ( A much better ambiance and food) and the host told us: SEE YA!

An old diva with died blonde hair is the host or manager at this place and he was not only rude to us but every single person that walked in this restaurant. No wonder they were about to close for business a few years ago. with that sort of attitude this man is chasing the customers away. (he definitely chased us away last night).

Reservations were made for 830 for a group of 7. we arrived at 8:25 to have the nasty host tell us we were early and walked away. then the rest of our party arrived except our one friend who was at home putting her newborn to bed. our table was clearly not ready at 830. at 9 pm having not been acknowledged by anyone at the restaurant we asked when our table would be ready. we were told that our entire party wasnt there. we asked if our table was ready and he said NO. at any other restaurant the host would probably apologize for not having a table ready for us when reservations were made for 8 30. however here we were to blame because one of our friends had not arrived even when a table was not available. Clearly we are not the only ones that feel this way about this disrespectful rude man at this restaurant. Word to the owners if you want to stay in business perhaps you should think about hiring a new host with an agreeable attitude.

Offensive Customer Service. I have been to Jules several times over the past few years. The food has been hit or miss, often featuring poor quality meat, but the room is very charming by Vancouver standards. Recently, when I visited early one Friday evening with a friend, my wife, and our young daughter, we were treated with outright disrespect by a middle aged blonde man who appeared to be the manager. The place was empty, and we were at least an hour ahead of the dinner rush. We asked for a table outside and out of anyone's way. This guy had the nerve to start negotiating with us about whether and where we could sit, and on what conditions. There was not a trace of courtesy or humour in his tone, just hostility. Needless to say we did an about face and went to a nicer place just around the corner.

What's especially puzzling about the situation is that maitre-d could have fed us his 2nd rate bistro food, sold us drinks and an overpriced bottle of wine, and turned our table before 7:30. Plus he would have had four very well dressed patrons warming his empty patio.

Anyway, Jules Bistro is outrageously poor service and bad business. I strongly discourage you from patronizing this place. Let's hope someone else takes over this room soon.

Nice intimate atmosphere. Terrific lobster bisque w a marvelous rue. Followed by duck confit which was tasty and moist. Pear tart for dessert and glasses of French wine all for around $70 was a great dining experience. Happily go back there. Excellent service.

My boyfriend took me to Jules for Valentine's and we loved it. The atmosphere was very cozy and romantic. We had the 3 course meal and everything was delicious. The steak was tender and tasty and the salad was delightful. The service was excellent too. This French bistro will not disappoint.

Service was excellent and the food was good. They had a small wine selection, which I hoped was bigger as I was dining at a French restaurant. Overall the food and desserts were delicious. I like how they serve tap water in prepared bottles. Very nice touch. The price of appetizer was under $10 and entrees were between $14-18. I ordered the daily special which was the scallops ($23). I though it would be bigger pieces. But the taste was good. Overall experience: two thumbs up!

Rude Guy For Lunch. We just moved into this neighborhood and stopped for lunch today and it was sunny. We had our well-behaved Border Collie with us, to tied him to the outside railing and came into the outside dining area about 1 pm. There was a table there with 2 used glassed but we diAdn't mind, and sat down. A blonde guy with shoulder length hair came up to the table and said, with a terse tone, "I need you to get up from the table and leave. I NEVER serve from a table that hasn't been set." Here's what you say as a server, "Let me clear this away. May I get you a drink?" This guy was so horrible that we picked up our dog and walked away in search of a friendlier restaurant. My husband said, "You are so rude," To which he replied in an angry voice "Bye-Bye." Just moved into the neighborhood. Will never go there again. And will never take our many friends there for a bite. This is no way to be in business. Fire the creep.

First of all the environment was lovely. There were chandeliers with tables and chairs that made the resteraunt halfway between fancy and casual. The service was very nice, and quick. I ordered beef tenderloin with scalloped potatoes and ratatouille with an appetizer of escargo. It was all delicious, but the beef tenderloin is the best piece if meat I have ever put in my mouth. 3000 foodie thumbs up to Jules.
Jezzicuh
Casual and delicious. I'd say everyone should know about this place, but then the prices might go up! Excellent French food (steak and frites!), very reasonable prices, adorable surroundings, and great service. Everyone in Gastown should know about Jules.

Steak fatty but tasty. Escargot and carpaccio excellent.

Loved it.... Great atmosphere, beautiful space, loved the lighting.
Attentive but unobtrusive service.
Food was tasty. Subtle flavours, but unpretentious and unfussy. Went there with a small group of friends.
Started with the Tarte Flambee Alsacienne au Bleu D'Auvergne. Now a bacon and carmelized onion tart with blue cheese has the potential to be a bit heavy, but this was absolutely lovely.... no great "gobs" of anything and the flavours blended nicely. I had the Moules frites as a main. Very generous servings... rare for me to be unable to finish a dish of mussels, but I couldn't and not just because I filled up on the tasty fries (in fact I didn't finish these either). I tried a bite of my friend's roast lamb, which was done to perfection. This was not a regular item on the menu, but one of the specials. Too bad, but if you're lucky enough to be there when the lamb is on offer, you must try it! Another friend had the "dinner special" which is a set menu item including appetizer (salad), main (steak frites) and dessert (chocolate terrine), as she had had this before. Once again, it did not disappoint. I tried her chocolate terrine and it was delicious. I ordered the pear tart for dessert, also delicious. Our macchiatos came in beautiful, delicate old china coffee cups and saucers, each uniquely designed, a nice touch, with the added bonus of a chewy little sweet confection on the saucer. Lovely, understated attention to detail.

I will definitely go back. It may just become a favourite.

Classic French atmosphere. Service was extremely friendly. Food wasn't the best ever; mussels delicious, escargot average, chicken dry, but cous cous and sauce very nice. Would visit again and try something else on the menu. The atmosphere and wine list is great.
YumYum
Wonderful night out!. Excellent wine list, great service and wonderful food! I would absolutely go back next time i am in Vancouver.

Great lunch!. We only have good things to say about this bistro. We have been there twice and plan to go again.
Great food, great atmosphere and delightful service!
Bravo!

Don't bother - doesn't live up to the hype. After trying Les Faux Bourgeois and being totally impressed, I thought I'd give Jules a shot - after-all I hear that the owner of Les Faux was once a part-owner of Jules…so I figured Jules can't be all that bad…right?

The food was at best, OK…nothing special. While it does fill you up at reasonable prices - it is not memorable.

The service was not as terrible as many reviewers have posted but it was nothing to brag about either…all our servers from the moment we walked in, seemed indifferent, almost like working and serving was a chore.

The décor is the restaurants best feature, I'm a big fan of exposed brick and the overall restaurant design is quite charming.

Recommendation: don't bother.

Worst Dining Experience Ever - HORRIBLE Service. We had such an upsetting experience at Jules and I wouldn't want any other diner to have to go through this. We arrived at 830 on a Tuesday night; there were four of us and we wanted to have desert and wine. We waited for a bit and then were seated by the owner. A few minutes later, when he realized we were there for desert, he stormed up to the table and shouted at us and tried to humiliate us. He simply raised his voice and demanded to know why we did not inform him we only wanted dessert and how he was shocked that hadn't. He said he could have seated other people in our seats and wondered how four people could sit down only for dessert. Other diners looked on and we were shocked by his behaviour. We have been to Jules many times before and we have taken our friends there. We were embarrassed that our friends were treated like this at a place we had recommended and we were totally furious. The owner of the restaurant didn't even acknowledge the fact that we have been there so many times before. The food is good and the prices are decent but a man like this does not deserve the business. I have never written a bad review before...I've never even felt compelled to write a review before but I just felt that I needed to tell people what had happened.

Terrible customer service. I made a reservation for a birthday dinner party for 12 people, 5 weeks prior to the dinner. I called 2 days ahead confirming the arrangements.

Upon arrival I noticed the room was set as 2 separate tables of 6. I politely asked for the table to be reset as one. The manager was very rude, short and dismissive of my party of 12 women there to celebrate a birthday. He refused to explain to me why he would not make this change when I had been to the restaurant before and seen a setting of this size in the past.

He could have told me that they no longer do this 5 weeks ago, 2 days ago or even the day of. Instead he rudely dismissed us when we arrived, forcing me to remove our party from this restaurant.

Next door - Revel Room took us in with open arms, smiles, complimentary drinks and dessert, wonderful service and great food.

Do not reward this poor attitude, lack of customer appreciation and service by going to Jules. The food and lack of ambience is not worth your time anyway.

Great Little Bistro. Its in Gastown so it comes with the character building, live piano on certain nights, and great french bistro cuisine.

Yikes, never again!. Probably the most humiliating restaurant experience I have ever had. Had to wait an hour for my reserved table because some "really special" people called for a table. We couldnt be seated at the bar because only two seats. The table awaiting the special people sat empty the whole time until another table finally came up for my party. My dinner guests were famished and cranky from eating so late, and stressed because they were due at another event. On top of that absolutely no acknowledgement from staff except to comment on our patience and graciousness. A totally insulting experience.

My new neighborhood favourite. My friend and I decided to have lunch at Jules by chance last week and we were so happy we did! I had the Salade Nicoise, which was the best I've had in Vancouver, and a resnoably prices glass of one of my favourite wines - Jaffelin Aligote ($10).

I returned the next night for dinner and was impressed again. The food and service are very good, plus the people watching on Abbott Street at Cordova is unmatched.

Fabulous food and a great value. Don't believe some of the other reviews. They're wrong. This place really understands cooking and French food. Great value, service, and atmosphere.

Avoid lunchtimes!. Half the things on the menu were out by 12.30. The service was appalling, and the noise unbearable, unless you like being in a human traffic jam. The food when it came, and boy what a wait, was on the very goodish side, but I felt we'd run the gauntlet to get it. Very buzzy atmosphere, a place on adrenalin or more, but that energy ought to apply to the service and menu as well. Lots of potential, I suppose, but I won't go again.

... so salty!!! acceptable amt of actual lobster and prawn bits at the bottom, flesh was firm and crisp, but any flavor was overshadowed by the super salty bisque...

Really well cooked steak, medium-rare to the M. Only thing is I didn't pick this, and I'm not a fan of pepper, so next time if I order same, will get the Herb Butter sauce...

Nestled in historic Gastown, Jules is a nice fusion between a lovely casual setting and a romantic fine dining experience. The ambiance was warm and friendly. It was a little dark in my opinion but the many tables of couples I noticed enjoying a romantic dinner told me otherwise. The restaurant interior is delightful, with rustic brick walls, a retro black and white tiled floor, and dimly lit chandeliers.

Jules Casual French Bistro on Urbanspoon Saturday brunch is typically pretty slow at Jules Bistro, so if you're thinking of a walk-in, you probably have a good chance of it up till 1:30 pm or so. Before 1 pm or so, it will probably be empty, giving you a great chance to walk about a bit and look at the posters, paintings, and old piano on which are a collection of intriguing flasks and brandy warmers. Also be sure to check out the chandeliers with blue birds.

Jules Casual French Bistro is located on the cobble-paved Gastown streets of Vancouver. It is a classic place full of character and pazazz. Dazzling baroque chandeliers and beautiful bar outlines this room with clean black and white finishes.

That's when I was determined to find THE BEST Soupe a lâ Oignon in the entire Vancouver. I told Mr. F we weren't going to settle for some cup-a-soup-a-soupy. After some net surfing, I stumbled upon Jules Casual French Bistro in Gastown Vancouver. We ordered: 2 of the Soupe a l’Oignon Gratinee (French Onion Soup) Moules Frites (Steamed Mussels in White Wine with Garlic and Parsley Served with Fries) Menu found here: http://www.julesbistro.ca/menu.html AMBIENCE | It was a clear and gleaming day, so we chose to sit outside in a nice fenced off section in front of the restaurant. I peeped inside the restaurant and its very comfy roomy homey feel. Will definitely come back to try dinner. DISHES | I'm only going to rave about how awesome the French Onion Soup is, the musse

Dessert and coffee is a must at Jules Bistro. The Fondant au Chocolat Chaud, Sauce Caramel et Glace Vanille ($7), is simply a flat, warmed, gooey chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. It may not sound or look special, but if you love chocolate and ice cream, you will enjoy this dessert.

Jules French Bistro claims to have french food and apparently french attitude? What can I say about this place? In a city with amazing restaurants at every corner there is NO need to put up with this sort of service anywhere. After all we are not in France and even in France they don't treat you as badly as the host treated us last night (and I should know- I lived in Paris for 2 years and NOWHERE in Paris were staff so outrageously RUDE). An old diva with dyed blonde hair is the host or manager at this place and he was not only rude to us but every single person that walked in the restaurant. No wonder they were about to close for business a few years ago. With that sort of attitude this man is chasing the customers away (he definitely chased us away last night). Reservations

Holl-Allen from Jules Bistro's "Old Smokin' Appleshine" with cherry apple infused Maker's Mark bourbon was nice going down.

Jules Bistro in Gastown is a long standing fine dining establishment in the neighborhood so ‘casual’ is somewhat of a misonomer.

The bistro interior is painfully cute, with rustic brick walls, a black and white tiled floor, and dimly lit chandeliers. It is a definite date-spot that will win you big points. Try to book ahead. I will be making an effort to return to Jules soon. With the cooler weather encroaching, I can’t think of a more perfect time to enjoy hearty, traditional French food.

A random stroll around cobble-paved Gastown led to a late evening spent sipping on delectable absinthe at Jules, a quaint French bistro. I’m an avid wine lover. I’m also what many call a “double fister”, a term I find utterly appalling in contrast to the

Jules has long been my favorite french bistro in Gastown, and now with Cassis closed to the public, it shares my heart with none. Whether enjoying the patio or the stylishly minimal dining room, you can find me on long lunches with people I want to pay at
