In Vancouver, it seems like the two most popular ice cream places are Earnest, and Rain or Shine. Both are great choices and worth the hype. It’s been almost 4 years since my last post on Earnest Ice Cream, so I thought I would write a revisit post!
Great dessert on a hot day in Vancouver. The service is super friendly, and I tried the Vegetarian Chocolate Ice Cream and it is sweet! Flavor are varied and inclusive for the lactose free. Impressed!
Weather gets better and half of Vancouver shows up to this place! Expect a lineup but it’ll be worth it. We took ours to go and sampled some varieties. My favorites include London Fog and classic chocolate
Best ice cream I’ve ever tasted, again and again and again best ice cream I’ve ever had again and again and again. Crave it all the time !! Best local ice cream
This is the best ice cream in Metro Vancouver. They offered a lot of different and unique flavors. Expensive but worth it. There's a long line up if you go here on weekends. Definitely will go back here.
Staff is always friendly! Ice cream is delicious! They have many flavours and if you want you can even buy some to take home.
Expect a line when you come because it's a very popular spot.
We moved down the road from here. Tried other the first time today. I had extreme chocolate and it was near perfect. Rich chocolate taste with a thick creamy texture. Wow...worth the hype.
Went to SFU. Repotted P’s snake plant. Had dinner with her at SFU, but before I blog about the poké we had for dinner, let’s talk about dessert - ice cream at Earnest Ice Cream along Fraser St:. Best ice cream, it’s always just the right amount of sweet and actually tastes like the flavour that it’s advertised to be. I had the sweet cream (on bottom), and P had the salted chocolate (top), and we split it by putting the top of the double scoop into a cup. There was a tiny little black hair actually in the ice cream. I couldn't tell where it's from, and it was mixed into the ice cream, so it couldn't have been a piece of dust that fell onto it.
I've been a long time lover of earnest but i've been having a few disappointing experiences with them.
Had the special lemon curd sundae recently and found it more vanilla based than lemon. The description was vanilla iceacream, homemade lemon curd and lemon cream. The person who made it did not add enough lemon curd and the lemon cream tasted like regular whipped cream.
Had rocky road another time and had no nuts in my scoop.
Had the spruce bud one, lacking flavour
Overall I recently find their icecream flavours to be too mild and lacking punch and quality control. I don't want to write a seemingly negative comment but I think feedback is important and I hope they can make improvements.
I've tried the whiskey hazel nut and salted caramel in the past and they were wayy too sweet for me but recently I've discovered their vegan maple walnut and that's absolutely divine! You can't even tell that it's vegan! It's so creamy and unlike most vegan restaurants, there's no banana flavor!
On a Sunday night, around 9pm, the line-up was through the door! Since their opening in 2012, the hype for Earnest Ice Cream has definitely not calmed. Prior to my visit, I had only tried their ice cream at a friend's house and after a spoonful, I literally wanted the whole pint of salted caramel to myself. So I threw off the discouragement and waited in line. On either a cone, by pint, or sundae, they offer a lot of flavour variations from the usual (but better than average) Tahittian vanilla to a peculiar one like lavender; also they have vegan non-dairy options! Protip: their website lists the flavours that each location has daily. After a few complimentary taste tests, I opted on getting a lavender scoop on a cone and got pints of vegan mint chip and london fog to go. I live about 45 mins away and the ice cream barely melted on the way home! My only regret was only getting 2 pints because I'm sure they will be gone asap. Also, I love their idea of bringing back the mason jars for a $1 refund your next pint! I mean, who could resist these creamy and flavoursome scoops of heaven, while saving the environment for your next visit!
The Hot Chocolate Festival is on right now with 21 participants offering 61 different hot chocolate flavours. The festival is worthy cause to help fundraise for the Downtown Eastside Women’s Job Training Program. Returning this year as a participant is Earnest Ice Cream with two locations in Vancouver. I visited their Fraser location to try their two hot chocolate flavours.
Had to try the famed Earnest Ice Cream. Great service. Loved I could sample. The cardamom was great and my brother's vegan ice cream was surprisingly good. The biggest thing holding it back from Canadian ice cream fame is the waffle cone which was very average.
Some of the best ice cream I've ever had. The service is fairly fast once you get to the counter but there can be quite a line. Often have very unique but Delicious flavours. Multiple options to buy as either cone, bowl or take home 1 (pint I think) jar.
I could say a lot of good things about Earnest Ice Cream. You have to try it! The staff are friendly and the ambiance of the place is ALIVE. Make sure you are prepared to line up at this place because many people swarm any of the Earnest Ice Cream locations for an Ice Cream fix.
These guys will never let you down. Drop by and see for yourself.
Finally decided to give a try to the wildly talked about earnest ice cream. Ordered myself a double scoop consisting of "Whiskey Hazelnut" and "London Fog." The "London Fog" had a subtle flavour and was a little underwhelming. On the other hand, the "Whiskey Hazelnut" boasted tremendous flavour at just the right level. You could taste the creamy fusion of hazelnut and whiskey at a level where neither overwhelmed the other. The roasted hazelnuts within the ice cream are an amazing touch to an already tasty ice cream. Definitely will be ordering this flavour again.
Couldn't believe how creamy their vegan ice cream was! I defs recommend this place for a decadent treat during the warmer months. The London fog flavour specifically is delish.
Been frequenting Earnest ice cream since it first opened and still go there every few months to pick up a few pints. Overall, most of their flavours are tasty and flavourful. The ice cream is definitely on the more creamy/milky side - definitely taste the dairy in it (except for vegan of course). Some flavours I’ve tried and liked include espresso, milk chocolate, whisky hazelnut, lemon poppyseed, strawberry basil, raspberry, and pumpkin pie. There are some main staples that stay on the menu (like the salted caramel) but the flavours do change up quite often so check their website to see what flavours they’re selling that day! Now, they are offering sundaes too and the toppings change up as well.
The ice cream is not as soft as other ice cream place. Their ice cream is harder or stiffer texture but they do taste good. They have unique flavours there but way less choice of flavour than gelato place in venables or mario gelato. My friends and my husband like the ice cream a lot. The place is very busy and the decor is quite hip and modern
I visited Earnest Icecream on Quebec Street a few times. This was the first time I ate icecream at this location on Fraser Street.
My boyfriend and I ordered a push hot fudge sundae and a serious chocolate icecream with waffle cone. Oh man! They were extraordinary delicious! No other icecream could beat Earnest Icecream in my dictionary so far. I am not exaggerating. Any icecream that I bought and tried from different supermarkets did not taste as well as Earnest's. I also bought a pint of rocky road icecream. Its flavour was about right and texture was very smooth.
The customers kept coming into the store even though it was the night time at 9:30pm. The icecream business went very well even though it was winter time. The environment was quite cozy and comfortable with special interior designs.
Earnest Icecream is very popular in Great Vancouver. However, I knew some people in Fraser Valley never heard of Earnest Icecream. I was quite surprised! Keep up the good work Earnest Icecream! I am sure word of mouth would help advertising in Lower Mainland.
So yummy, just a great place for an ice cream fix. Though be warned in the summer on a hot day this place has huge lines. It's amazing how huge the line is considering how the location is in the middle of nowhere. The pic I have here was a daily special they had of apple pie ice cream. Absolutely delicious! Also the pint of ice-cream you can take home is super cute since it's in a mason jar. Man, I miss those warm summer days.
It was my first time and the line up was huge but I was surprised how the fast line flew by which was nice. I wanted to try a flavour that I've never had before as they had some unique ones. I decided to get the whiskey hazelnut. Although I don't like whiskey it was actually very smooth and just had the right hint of alcohol. Also the staff was very friendly and efficient.
The ice cream is delicious here! It's really creamy, dense and smooth. I had a scoop of the salted caramel and it was really flavourful but not overly sweet. I tried some of the green tea ice cream and it was good too.
I would go back the next time I'm in Vancouver.
This popular ice cream shop has a concrete and wood interior that works well with the homemade ice cream and coffee they serve. They always have at least one vegan flavour, so I never have to wonder about finding something to enjoy! 1 scoop is $5, and 2 is $7. Get a little plastic cup and share!
4/5$5 1 scoop, $7 2 scoops.Whisky Hazelnut. Whisky. Hazelnut. TRY it. I asked for a sample and was immediately hooked. It's absolutely delicious. I have nothing bad to say about it. Actually one of the best ice creams I've ever had in Vancouver. It tasted smooth and soft like gelato. Thank you for the man who gave me a massive scoop. It was much appreciated.Matcha. I've always enjoyed matcha. The flavor wasn't as strong as I wished it was.Cone - always a good idea.
I really enjoyed Earnest, until I went to Salt&Straw in Portland. And now my standard for ice cream has gone up several notches. Basically, dont line up for a scoop, just go in and get a jar.
Super silky smooth ice cream! We had a scoop of salted caramel and whiskey hazelnut each. Loved it! Only $5 for a humangous scoop. I felt guilty after eating one all by myself but it was so worth it :)
There wasn't much of a selection when I arrived at 10 pm so I opted for chocolate and green tea. The chocolate was very rich and i enjoyed that scoop. However, the green tea was not all that enjoyable. It lacked flavour and tasted too watered down for my liking.
Selection is limited but great. Serving is big too! I love the maple walnut! Everything is awesome. I go here at least twice a month and selection changes too. Price is right for the taste and serving. ❤️
Their ice cream are very smooth and creamy. I had their famous earl grey flavour. My friends say they are over rated but I feel they have a good choice of unique flavours to choose from and tastes honest.
Earnest Ice Cream has been the darling child of the ice cream business in Vancouver since they first opened. From the use of reusable pint-sized glass jars (returnable for a $1 refund) to the simple, yet original flavours, there's not much that you could find fault with. While we've had Earnest Ice Cream previously at Glenburn, we've never actually gone to their shop before. It was a sunny April day that we decided to visit their Fraser St. location and pick up a double scoop of Coconut Lime Sorbet and Salted Caramel
This place has been bookmarked for me for so long and I can FINALLY cross it off. We went on a weekend night just 20 minutes before closing, and the lineup still stretched around the block! Eventually the last person had to put on a sash from the workers saying "Last Scoop" (it was adorable). Definitely worth the hype; they have a wide variety of ice cream flavors, all of which are soft and creamy. I tried the whiskey hazelnut, which gives this warmth similar to the feeling of whiskey and is dolloped with a good amount of hazelnuts throughout. My personal preference would've been a denser, heartier waffle cone. Their cone was a little too light and airy for me.

Do you like ice cream? If your answer was yes, then you cannot miss out on Earnest. The ice cream is rich and creamy; it definitely pleases both the taste buds and the stomach. I hear many complain about the lack of options, stating that the 10-12 flavors are just not enough to choose from, but quality triumphs over quantity when it comes to ice cream, and other establishments don't have as genuine of a feel as Earnest does.
Good ice cream and the flavours are good but I wish that the flavouring was a little bit stronger. I've been here a few times and it's usually packed so I feel rushed into not asking to try flavours.
Waffle cone........ I came here 3 hours before my flight back to dead city, my last bite in Vancouver. I ordered a salted camera on waffle cone, it was very creamy and smooth, the flavor was just ok. But the waffle cone was very crispy and buttery taste.
Just get the London fog wow.... I don't see this flavor around town often so what the hey right? My girlfriend and I just fell in love with this one. I can't even describe it haha just get it and you won't be disappointed. I'm hooked now LOL
Update: May 12 2016
It's hot weather season. Long line ups. Got the serious chocolate and it's seriously serious. Your gonna need water. The rest of our group got London fog.
Update: we recently tried the salted caramel. Absolutely delicious. The vegan chocolate mint is very interesting. I'm loving how our local brand is accommodating vegan products like cartems. Vancity has a market for gluten free products and vegan friendly.
So, far I just tried 2 flavors which is Salted caramel and Whiskey hazelnut... Superb taste...
Whiskey Hazelnut Ice Cream. I love that the Whiskey really stands out in the ice cream but if you're not a huge fan of that, the hazelnuts will cut that booziness. Yum
Wonderful!. A wide range of unique flavours, helpful and efficient staff and the best apple pie ever (only served on weekends)! I am glad I don't live too close, or else I would be here all the time. Highly recommend!
Really good icecream but expensive for what it is.
Worth the Hype. I finally got around to trying Earnest Ice Cream and I was very pleasantly surprised. The Salted Caramel was to die for --- amazing flavour balance. The Serious Chocolate was also highly delicious.
I went just prior to closing time (9:45pm on a Friday), and there was just a 2 minute wait but the place was packed .... for good reason.
Goood. I really like it but i think its a little expesive because.. after all it's just ice cream
Love the ice cream hate the lack of parking and long lines. If you do not have the time to line up ( at least 15 to 30 minutes) DEFINITELY leave this place alone. Parking is difficult at best, and impossible at worst. The ice cream, if you get past the lack of parking and the line up, is nice, and you can buy pints to take home instead of trying to find a table.
Yum!. Busy little place that only opens 4 days a week. Every time I come pay a visit there's always a lineup. So far I only tried the Vanilla flavour and it tastes rich and not overly sweet. I'm looking to try more different flavours. It's a better deal to order the ones in a jar than a single scoop. You pay $1 as deposit and when you return the jar you will get that back. I prefer this place over Bella Gelateria and the gelato place on Venable street, except the one on Venable has the Durian flavour, which is awesome. I will be back for the London Fog and Salted Caramel flavours!
Best Place for Summer Treats. Been here 3-4 times, Yes a Ice Cream addict. Tried the following favours
London Fog 5/5
Salted Caramel 5/5
Tahitian Vanilla 4/5
Chocolate Chip Mink 4/5
Buy the pints, its $11- return 10 of them get a pint for free =)
The BEST. 'Nuf said.. There's no ice cream creamier than Earnest's. The flavours are original and concentrated, servings are generous, and service is cheerful. I'll be a regular customer from now on!
Like this place. Delicious ice cream. Fresh cones and ice cream~
Friendly and quick service.
I enjoyed most of their ice cream especially London fog. Steep pricing 5 dollars for a single scoop, 7 for doubles and 11 for a pint. and extremely long line ups all the time. They should set up a seperate line for those just wanting to buy a pint to take home. I find it hard to believe they don't announce their flavors online for both scoops and pint. It would make it so much easier for people looking for specific seasonal flavors. They are also not ontop of announcing when they are nearly sold out.
Aces!. Friendly, quick service.
Delicious ice cream. Best vanilla I've ever tasted. Fresh cones...
What more can one ask for? Two thumbs way up from me!!!
Secret treasure of ice cream flavour!. This delicious, tiny treasure is worth keeping a secret & yet I tell everyone about their unbelievable yumminess. This is summer all year long.
-----24 Apr, 2014-----
Heaven is made of Earnest Ice Cream. Loving the flavours, the great people and the amazing ice cream. My tongue is dancing with delight from the two we shared - malty milk chocolate and the tangy Lemon.. . .mmmm more please!
Yummy Ice Cream. Heard good things about this place and was not dissapointed with their house made ice cream.
Tried their Salted Caramel flavour and it was pretty yummy though the pricing is a little high for me. At least the tax is included.
It's aight. There's not much to say about ice cream. the price is a little higher (it's cool that the tax is included) than your usual scoop but hopefully it's because they're using better ingredients. the decor is cool but the seating isn't very comfortable. 2 out of the 4 we tried had the right consistency where as the other two weren't as soft as we'd like. the cone is way too thin. it broke as it was passed to my girlfriend and made a mess. of course they gave us another one free of charge so that's a point for customer service.
Love this place. This is my favorite ice cream place to visit. Their ice cream is not overly sweet and very flavorful. I love their London Fog and Whiskey Hazelnut.
Authentic. This is what ice cream should taste like. Prices are fair for the quality of the product. $5 single scoop and $7 for a double scoop (March 2014).
Never disappoints. London fog ice cream for the win! actually they are all amazing flavours, and you get to keep an awesome jar afterward
Love it!. So good! They only have a few flavours, but they're all extremely good. Super creamy, perfect level of sweetness. Environment is great, the girls who serve the ice cream are really nice, place feels clean --not quite enough tables and chairs though, but I think they try to create the effect of being more coveted. It's known to be expensive, but I think the prices are pretty good --$5 including tax for a single, cone or cup. Only criticism is that although they only have a few flavours, the flavours are not too distinct from one another.
Unique flavours. Very unique and tasty flavours. I like our their flavours change often so it's a good excuse to come back to try more! The only negative side was that the girl taking my order was super unfriendly and not helpful at all. But there was another lady there that seemed friendly helping the person behind me.
First time there this evening and really enjoyed the whiskey hazelnut. Very creamy and not overly sweet.
So So So Good. You can't miss it... I love it!
I thought the ice cream was good. Nothing to write home about. $5 for a kids ice cream is a one time deal.
Awesome ice cream. Waffle is included in the price. Service was great.
Overall experience: thumb's up
Soft and flavourful Salted Caramel. Salted Caramel $10 ($1 off for returning the jar) - I like the idea how they take your jars back. "Reduce Reuse Recycle" I really need to bring my cooler next time. I was melted by the time I got home=(. It's fine when I put it back in the fridge. It was a little bit too powerful for me so next time I think I will go with the fruity flavours. Looking forward to their blueberry cheesecake!
It would be great if they can update their flavours online. So that I don't have to stand in line making instant decisions.
Worth every penny. Hands down the best ice cream I have ever had. I am heavily addicted to the cardamon. Other ones are good but I'd say more typical, had a seasonal strawberry and basil (sounds strange, but is great!) combo in the summer that I also loved.
The moment I took my first bite, it was so smooth in my mouth and so creamy. Each scoop didn’t overpower each other and had a nice balance. Also the waffle
This new place for ice cream is very good and very special. The place is call Earnest Ice Cream. They served over 20 different flavours of ice creams. They are not the ones that you can easily find in a super market. The ice cream are rather unique. They are all made from organic material, and all grown within Canada. They have different flavour for different people. They serve their ice cream in both vegan and non vegan. Their store front is very clean and bright but the only down side to this is the line up is at least half and hour, and they will run out of flavours. These are the pricing for the different size of ice creams and their flavours of the day. You get to choose from all that. The one on the right is the whiskey hazelnut. It has a very unique taste to it. The use of fresh hazelnut and
Whisky Hazelnut was very delicious! The ice cream has a very creamy texture. I could totally taste the whisky, though I'd say more whisky would make it even better. There was a very generous amount of hazelnuts. They were not just bits; they were huge chunks! My boyfriend and I finished the whole pint within ten minutes after our dinner.
...very scrumptious Salted Caramel ice cream. The texture of it was very creamy and smooth. Not too sweet but the caramel flavor was very rich and the saltiness was very subtle. I just fell in in love with the combination. All the ice cream here were made in house.
If I had to describe ice cream here, it would be “hipster ice cream packed with zest”. I personally have never heard of the brand “Earnest Ice Cream” but it’s all the buzz on social media. Even on a heavy snow day, the small store was packed with people.

Before parting ways with C'est la vie a Maggi , she urged me to try Earnest Ice Cream and to get it over with. As for her, she finds the shop overhyped and was firm on not ordering from here again. And from what I have heard, sometimes there are lineups up to an hour long! Although fortunately, we waited only a mere five minutes. Earnest Ice Cream focuses on local and sustainable flavours which is similar to Rain or Shine , a newer ice cream shop that popped up in Kitsilano. In addition, vegan flavours are available as well. And for those who really love the flavours here, Earnest has a fridge full of pints at the back of the shop. As for the prices, they are slightly higher when compared to Rain or Shines' . Single $5.00, double $7.00, pint $11.00. However, waffle cones do not cost extra. As for the flavours of ice cream, vegan lemon, salted caramel, whiskey hazelnut, spruce bud, cardamon, london fog, rhubarb oat crumble, cafe au lait and 33 acres of malt was available. DOUBLE, LONDO
I have long seen pictures of their ice cream on social media and have long heard tales of their extraordinary flavours. Now on this cold January Vancouver night I would get to try “Earnest Ice Cream” for myself. Though we weren’t the only ones with this idea. From the road it is easy to miss. A plain store front without signs, no lights featuring anything, and nothing flashy to catch wanted attention. The white building was topped with their trademark pattern of spirals, this where a sign would be anywhere else. After a call for directions we were able to arrive and recognize the frosted font at the bottom corner of the store’s front window. “EARNEST ICE CREAM seriously good”. The space opened up with a vaulted ceiling and gave a breath of fresh air with natural lighting from bulbs, sprouted greenery in white pots, and the sounds of country twang and a jazzy trumpet overhead. My guest deemed it “really hipsterish” with the use of reclaimed wood for the floor boards, gloss white vinyl t
Fantastic place for ice cream. They even had a good number of selections for my son, who has a dairy allergy. The service was friendly, efficient and acceptable pricing. I'd definitely return here again, especially when the menu changes all the time.
Craving for sweets crazily during final week
Went to earnest ice-cream today to find some stress relief
🌟Whiskey Hazelnut🌟
Signature flavour which is so good. I love the hazelnut chunks. Light whiskey and the sweetness is just at the right point.
🌟Serious Chocolate🌟
Very very serious chocolate😍 If you are a DARK chocolate lover, go for it.
🌟Tiramisu🌟
Seasonal limited edition. Almost gone! There are chocolate flakes and cheesecake chunks in it. Sweeter than the other two but definitely worth trying.
I love all three flavours when I taste them all together, the sweetness just blend and compliment with each other in your mouth. Sooooo good👍👍10/10
P.S: their staff is so nice and friendly! He seeing me hesitating between Chocolate and tiramisu so gave me a bit of tiramisu for free! 😊 Thank you so much! This made my day!!!!
📍Earnest Ice-cream
Been here a few times and it never disappoints! Truly one of the best ice cream shops I’ve been to. I recently had the salted chocolate rye and it was AMAZING!!
London fog is my best flavor! Tried with salted caramel this time🙂 Very rich and flavorful ice cream❤️
Price is fair, flavor never lets me down :) sometimes staff can be short-handed but i love both locations! I’ve tried their espresso flake, strawberry, whiskey hazelnut, brown sugar oats and tiramisu! Espresso flake is the best and i hope to try all of their flavors!!
A few years ago la glace produced by far the best ice cream in the city. Unfortunately, it sort of fell on hard times in terms of producing quality consistently. So Ernest is the place to go for quality ice cream.
Our favorites are espresso flakes and the vanilla ice cream. When the vanilla beans pricing was too high, The owner came up with an interesting vanilla ice cream substitute. However, he has since replaced that substitute with the normal vanilla bean ice cream. The pecan ice cream is also very good.
Please note that we have not had a truly outstanding ice cream since the demise of la glace.
Possibly the best ice cream sundae anywhere. Try it with Coffee Crisp or Vegan Nanaimo Bar.
Always a wonderful experience coming here. It tends to get quite busy on weekends though so keep that on mind.
Whiskey hazelnut is definitely the show stopper flavor
