Review Johns Noodle Village - Vancouver Island

Daniel He
My SO and I love their dumplings( we usually order 40) and szechuan noodle soups. It tastes very authentic and homemade. We have tried most restaurants in Victoria and it is one of the few places we can agree to go to on a weekly basis. As a side bonus, our server also recognizes us and is just genuine and friendly.

Best food hands down! Very fresh and yummy! Portions were not huge, first time I've ordered Chinese food without leftovers! Worth it though. -1 star because the green onion cakes were very unimpressive (small and dry) and didn't come with any sauce! Will order from here again for sure...just maybe not the green onion cakes...

I've got to give this company a good review based on what happened tonight. The delivery guy forgot to bring the pop I ordered, so someone else who worked there brought it me and offered me 10% of my next meal. Given that I had ordered close to their closing time, I can only imagine it must have been tedious for him to have to do that at the end of a long work shift. Thanks for the quality service, guys! :)

I love John's Noodle Village, I have never had a bad experience there and the food is delicious. I noticed that most bad reviews came from people who ordered delivery, they are very much a family run business so if it takes a long time for your food to be delivered, be understanding. I always eat-in or pick up and the food is very fresh and the people working are very kind. Would recommend to anyone!

We are huge fans! Our neighbors recommended John's to us - as our usual spot had taken a dive in their food quality. John's has not let us down - in fact, it tastes so clean and healthy that we've created a Friday night ritual of ordering from them every week now! They also offer coupons on their website and we enjoy a free cashew chicken each week. Awesome awesome!!

Dylan and his family consistently create chef inspired quality with their menu. The portions, seasoning and authentic nature of their dishes always blow us away! We highly recommend! Cheers

Delicious veggie dumplings, Szechuan green beans, spicy tofu hot pot, among other dishes. The staff is very friendly. I'm a tad surprised by the bad reviews. I would certainly recommend this place.

Very friendly, good prices and portions. I had hot and sour soup which was a meal in itself and also chicken and veggie dumplings. Can't wait to go back.

Loved it ! I've tried every Chinese restaurant in Victoria. This is the best of all. It wasn't even greasy food. We ordered on Christmas day and were very happy.

Great food. First time here less than a week ago. Back again. Great Tan Tan Mien and homemade dumplings. All we have had here but we will be back often!

Go here about twice a month with my friend - we are in love with the House Special Noodle Soup - best soup in town! Dumplings are also delicious.
Michael Glover
I'm giving this 4 stars because it's the only restaurant in town that serves chinese dumplings. All said and done it probably deserves a 3. The dumplings are small and wouldnt stand a chance on the mainland.

Korean restaurant will be open in the same location.

Very pleasantly surprised to find this place. We enjoyed all our dishes in our take-out order and will definitely order again!

Their spicy ginger fried tofu is to die for, and their dumplings are the best I've ever had. This is where I eat when I want to treat myself.

Food was amazing! Fresh and saucey. Im shocked by some of these reviews. It's quality comfort food!

The food (and prices) are amazing. We love the light, delicate handmade dumplings too.

John's Noodle Village is our go-to for Chinese in Victoria. The food is always fresh and the flavours are unique. The food is always reliable and consitent. Some of our favourite dishes include the Thai Style Chow Mein, Chicken and Pork Dumplings, and the Ginger Fried Chicken. We like to dine in, but they also have great online ordering!

I've heard excellent things about John's but I'm left very disappointed. Ordered tonight for delivery, which came in a timely manner from a surly driver who wasn't worth tipping, and boy am I glad I didnt. My house special fried rice was made using a frozen veggie mix, chow mein thrown together and dry. All the meat was bland with the exception of the sweet and sour pork which emitted fumes of vinegar so strong it was hard to eat. Nothing was really worth the exorbitant prices and I won't be ordering from John's again.

Not what it used to be.. I used to LOVE this place .. My husband is Chinese and we loved the great, authentic, well seasoned and cooked dishes. The last few times as been an over salted, greasy mess. The tables used to be packed, but now are mainly vacant at peak dinner times. The green onion pancake is greasy and hard to chew, the chicken and Ron soup , which once was delicious flavoured broth with delicate morsels of corn and chicken - now just tastes liked hot salt water. The chow fun noodles is chewy and salty, and the sweet and sour fish is greasy and vinegary. Unfortunately, we won't be back again.

The worst chinese food I have ever had.. My god I don't know where any of these good reviews have come from as thanks to them I chose to order food from this place. It was easily the worst chinese I have ever had. The alleged egg rolls were riduculous small. I mean miniature! They were so small it was a complete joke. As for the food, it was not good either. The amount of meat served in the rice dish I ordered was pathetic and I could have easily made the dish myself as it was simply rice and fried frozen veg with a minute amount of meat. The food failed on all counts.

Delicious food. Very fresh and flavourful. Not so friendly service, they know that they'll always be busy because the food is good so they really don't care how they treat you when you're there.

Free two hour parking off of Dowler Street, at the side of the restaurant

Just went in to order some takeout. It was fairly quiet inside no bad smells like other reviews, the staff were extremely nice and charming. The food was good I had fried rice vegetables and almond chicken all was good I would come back and most definitely will

I'm here right now. The Thai chow mein is always fantastic. John's has the best spring rolls in Victoria, hands down.

I always recommend this restaurant to friends and family. No one has been disappointed!

I'd chalk up the negative reviews to a bad day. It happens to everyone.

Give John's a shot for fresh, clean Chinese cuisine.

Boys locker room at best. Went there today for a staff members bday.. smelled like dirty socks, like.. honestly, sweaty, dirty socks with that slight vinegar burn in your nose. Got the food, awful.. Just was not nice at all. I've tried a lot of chinese food in my time, and this was easily in the bottom 5 I've ever had. I would not recommend this to anyone who has a nose, or taste buds. PS: We had shrimp wonton soup, beef and broccoli, chicken chowmein, and lemon chicken. TO BE FAIR! The Lemon chicken was half decent tasting.. but it sure was not traditional.

Authentic Northern Chinese food of excellent value. I have come here many many times over the last 2 years and absolutely love it. The handmade noodles, dumplings, and "pancakes" are all excellent and top value for money

Surprised how not that good it was. Guess we have higher standards. Lacked flavour but excelled in MSG.
Service was excellent though.
Secret Diner
Twice Horrible. I've ordered take away twice from this restaurant which was very disappointing on both occasions. However twice I ordered Satay Chicken Chow Mein which was good! But, sweet and sour pork was hard, chewy and grossly fatty, just horrible and had to dump it! Pan fried dumplings were very small, hardly saw the pan, tasteless and the sauce was way too vinegary. Second time ordering I thought I could count on sweet and sour Chicken tasting great, but it was horrible! Hard and chewy but I think it was chicken? My orders were both at opening times and I know for a fact that I got NUKED sweet and sour pork, and the same for sweet and sour chicken. Either from lunch time or the previous day! I was furious that my food was not cooked fresh and I will NEVER EVER order their food again. What an insult to serve old stale NUKED food. I rate this NO STAR

Excellent Chinese Food. John's Noodle Village is a regular stop whenever I'm in town for a visit. I was recently there for a late lunch with my family. As usual, we started off with an order of pork and an order of squid dumplings. I like how these dumplings are handmade entirely in-house. The dumplings are juicy, bursting with a flavorful broth with each bite. We also had the Ginger Beef, which was crispy with a perfect amount of kick in the sauce. And the Sweet and Sour Fish is becoming a favourite of mine. The service was quick and friendly, and I'll be back next month!

Disappointed. After reading several reviews about the dumplings, four of us went to try them. We ordered a variety and were soon served 2 plates of the tiniest dumplings I have ever seen. We also ordered the cashew chicken dish...the 11 year old at our table remarked that she couldn't find the chicken! Be aware that the dumplings do not look like those in the photos on this site.

Chinese Food. I recently had some John's Noodle Village and it was a great eating experience for me. I have tried many Chinese food places in my time spent here and I would say that the food here is top notch and very reasonably priced for the amount of quality food that comes with each meal. If I were to go as far as suggesting a dish, it would definitely be the house special chow mein if your into that kind of thing.

Had a nice belated Father's Day dinner last night. Food was very good and we all enjoyed it. We were the only ones there but I think they do a good delivery business. Only question would be the amount MSG used. I didn't notice it, but my mother reacts to it and had a similar reaction later that evening. They did say they use little to no MSG. Perhaps a coincidence or maybe we ordered the wrong things. I'd go back with our daughter.. Mom? Not so sure. I'd suggest making sure you ask at the table if its something your don't want. I know I will next time.

Yuck!. I ordered delivery from this restaurant having eaten in once before. This time the food was TERRIBLE. The fried rice was tasteless and greasy, the sweet and sour pork overly chewy and the sauce had way too much vinegar in it. The only thing that was good was the deep fried prawns which had a lovely amount of batter and were crisp although slightly greasy. I will NEVER order from this restaurant again!

Horrible, Disappointment, I had read reviews about it and thought it would be a good choice for my client and I to try for lunch. The selection was minimal and the specials where even worse. I ordered a chicken and veg chow main with sweet and sour rice. The chicken looked like it came from the microwave and tasted like it was a microwave dinner. ( I did hear a microwave door close) and the rice was in the shape of the minute rice bowls. Disgusting. My client wanted a seafood dish she had a special as well. Her's came with a few pieces of fish and shrimp, and this was over top of about a pound of snap peas. My meal was $10.95 an hers was $11.95 if I wanted microwave meals I would buy them from the grocery store for a heck of a lot cheaper. I want fresh and real food when I go out to eat.
Native Victorian
Some high points. My husband and I just visited John's Noodle Village for the first time after the ownership change. We had thought the restaurant was closed so were quite excited to find it had reopened. It had been one of our favorites although it did seem like it had gone downhill just before it closed. It wasn't too busy for a Friday night although they seemed to be doing a lively takeout/delivery business. The waitress was young, and seemed inexperienced. But no complaints - service went very smoothly all night. The same chalkboard specials as before - some on the menu and some new. As before, glasses of house wine were $7.95 which was a total ripoff. Smaller servings of a relatively cheap Australian wine. Copied I believe from the former owner's menu. Instead we bought a bottle for the relatively cheap price of $22.95 and took the remainder home with us. Cider was only $4.5 so I have no idea what the thinking was behind the outrageous wine by the glass price. Hot and sour soup was first rate as before. I thought the veggie dumplings were as well. I don't remember them being on the previous owner's menu. But things went downhill with the last two dishes. We ordered the eggplant with garlic sauce. I had to ask what the dish was that the waittress delivered to our table. It looked like a vegetable medley stir fry. I suppose perhaps the eggplant wasn't that noticeable. Then the sizzling shrimp hot pan with crispy rice. It looked like the same vegetable medley stir fry mix with some deep fried shrimp and a few grains of crispy rice. We weren't impressed! I would go again but be more selective in my ordering.

Good, but not the best Chinese noodle & dumpling in town. Was expecting greatness, given the many glowing reviews, but found the food slightly underwhelming. I appreciate their effort to do homemade noodles, but they lack that chewy texture I seek in an Asian soup noodle. My noodles were a bit mushy, falling apart in my chopsticks. The broth in my House Special Noodle Soup was beefy-rich, rustic, pretty good, but lacking refinement and sophistication. The soup came with a hearty helping of fresh, bright veggies and savory meats, which I appreciated. We ordered a mix of their "famous" dumplings, and again, a bit underwhelming. I found them too doughy, the filling lacking seasoning. I think better noodles and dumpling are served at I Kyu Noodle in Chinatown and at JJ Wonton on Fort St. But amid a plethora of prosaic westernized Chinese food places in this city, John's does stand apart as an original and thus worthy of future visits.

Just ok, disappointed. We ordered Ginger Beef, Wor Wonton, squid dumplings and seafood chow mein. The Ginger Beer and the dumplings were good, but the rest was disappointing. The noodles in the chow mein were hard, and there was little sauce in the seafood (served separately) to put on them. The chowmein and the wor wonton had very little flavour. The soup actually tasted like barely salted water. Too bad, I had heard this place had great food....
Vic Vegetarian
Impressive. I ordered the Veggie dumplings (a must! not too doughy) , Eggplant, Mushroom with Chili Garlic Sauce (plus lots of other fresh veggies), Ginger & Onion Chow Mein. Everything was fresh and delicious! Delivery was quick. I will definitely order from here again!
Lanea
YUM. Absolutely delicious! This is now my new favourite place to eat.. The food exceeded my expectations, everything had a great taste and the portions were huge! The service was friendly and beyond helpful.. Loved it!!!

Excellent Food, Amazing Owner. I usually don't write reviews but the owner personally called me to apologize for a delayed delivery and even offered me a discount. The food was top notch and reminded me of my time in Beijing and Shanghai. The dumplings are a must order! Do what I do and get 5 of each type. I have only tried two of the noodle bowls so far, but the beef and chicken are both great, I prefer the spicy beef. They even separate the broth from the noodles so they aren't super soggy.
They do deliver so I'd suggest trying them out. Thanks again Dylan (hope I spelled that right).

Best chinese food in town ! the dumplings are out of this world - defs recommend it to anyone ! aside from the dumplings, the house special chow mein is great too; very flavourful. the staff are very attentative and the overall ambience of the restaurant is very welcoming

To Die For. We have been eating here for years and it has always been excellent, since Dylan bought the business he has managed to take the best and build on it. The dumplings are to die for and the place and the food continue to grow in a positive direction. The price is reasonable, the flavours abound with intensity and we just keep going back. Thank you Dylan.

Went last week for lunch with my Father in law. The atmosphere inside was very cozy yet tastefully modern and the service was quick, friendly and professional. We had an assortment of dishes, my favorite being the Beef Chow Mein, as it was very fresh and flavourful. I will definitely re-visit in the near future!

Amazing dumplings. The food at john's has always been good, but the new dumplings are out of this world. Just the thing i was craving for. The outer wrapper looks and probably is hommade. And the fillings were delicious as well. I had a whole plate yesterday and am still craving them!

Finally dumplings in Victoria!. I've been to dumpling restaurants in Seattle, Toronto, and China and these dumplings are just as good, if not better. John's has been my favorite Chinese restaurant for years because of their tasty, fresh food but with the addition of dumplings this makes me smile even more :) I like the shrimp ones and my other favorite is egg and chive. I've been ordering them as a main meal. New staff is friendly and helpful. Besides dumplings, try the ginger beef.
Oceaneer
One of my new favorites for take out. Really good Canadian style Chinese food.
The house special chow mien is great! as is the sweet and sour chicken. The beef broccoli was not up to the other standards but better than most in town.
All and all its one of the best in Victoria for take out Chinese food

My favorite Chinese food in Victoria - so fresh and delicious! They make their own noodles, and all the veggies, seafood and meat are always fresh and never overcooked. My fave is the Hong Kong (crispy noodle) chow mein. Loads of fresh veg, shrimp that's not previously frozen or pre-packaged, tender chicken etc. I was looking for a new fave and tried 15 different Chinese restaurant and John's was the best!
Pf
Mmmmm Dumplings. Food was brilliant! Service was great and helpful and the bill was easy on the pocket book. And the fresh made dumplings were seriously yummy!! I agree with other posters. This may be the best Chinese food in Vic.
FeedMe
My favorite Chinese restaurant in Victoria. Whenever I feel like Chinese food, I go to John's. They make their own noodles (love that) and dumplings (these are new and they are delicious!). Try the Shanghai Thick Noodles and their green beans, so much flavor.
Fred
Only place I will go....the house special CCM can't be beat.
Megan
Best Chinese food in Victoria. John's is the only restaurant that I go to when I want to eat Chinese.
Vance
This restuarant has the best Chinese food in Victoria hands down. The food is always prepared fresh and the prices are very reasonable. Try the house rice and the house chowmein.
Largely The Truth
Pricing aside I think John’s Noodle Village fits the bill; their ingredients are fresh, their sauces light and everything is a colour you wouldn’t be disturbed if you came across in nature.
Eating In Vancouver
The only restaurant in Victoria to offer fresh, homemade Chinese dumplings and noodles! But how did they both taste? We think that the...
