I had time for lunch at ChoWon before afternoon meetings at the client offices. It’s around the corner from all the great visibility on Yonge St, so not as many people may know that it exists. It appears that they updated their decor in the not too distant past (based on looking at other photos). The current decor is simple, clean, modern lines. There is seating for over 80 at a combination of 6-top and 4-top tables, almost all of them with a built in table bbq.
I chose the Bulgoki Dup Bap from the Lunch Special menu ($10.99). The beef was tender and a nice salty, with a hint of something sweet. It was nicely presented with the formed mound of white and purple rice. Along with six Korean side dishes, this was a tasty and filling meal.
Service was fast and polite.
They have great food. I like almost all the food I have tasted on the menu. I would give 4.5 /5.
The servers are rude or indifferent....2/5.
As a disclaimer, I will say that I'm not a huge fan of Korean food in general, but Chowon is definitely one of the better ones that I have been to. The restaurant is a bit hidden away on Drewry and Yonge in an area filled with your choice of Korean eats. The place looks rather small but is divided into two dining room halves that resemble old old Asian establishments where every party gets their own little mini room. Nice touch.
I ordered the JambBong, which is a spicy noodle soup with seafood. The gf ordered Croaker with a side of tofu soup. The JambBong was much larger than I thought. The broth smelled incredible but the soup wasn't nearly as spicy as it looked. There were plenty of noodles and vegetables to fill any man but I was hoping for more seafood. It comes with clams, octopus, squid, and tiny shrimp. The tiny shrimp was disappointing as it was very small pieces of cut up mini shrimp so it became obsolete to the dish. The clams, on the other hand, were plentiful and soaked up a good portion of broth. Loved those clams! The octopus and squid were good and the noodles were never ending and were really the thing that was making me full. Not a bad dish overall but maybe I was thinking too much about grilled pork belly?
I would definitely come back just to have a go at the Korean BBQ aspect as well as the pork bone soup. The table top cooking looked amazing but I need to be able to come with a larger group as it is a bit pricey. Everything else on the menu was actually quite cheap as most things were under $10. Will be back.
Me and my friends stumbled upon this Korean joint after searching for a good Korean spot to try. The restaurant itself looks traditional in decor and have a few private booths good for groups. First thing I noticed as soon as we sat down was how cold the place was! I tried ignoring it as to I was so hungry, I just wanted to get some food asap. Through recommendations, I tried the kan poong gi (deep fried chicken and hot peppers with sweet and sour sauce) to share with everyone. I was quite surprised with how big the portion was!! It was good for all 5 of us. I ordered the kimchi fried rice for myself and I thought it was average. Gamjatang, bulgogi and chajangmyun were also all satisfactory. The chicken really stood out for us the most. Golden, crispy and the sauce wasn't too much that it wasn't overwhelming. There were a couple of men who were probably drunk off the soju at 8pm that stared straight at us in the booth which was a bit weird. Other than that, service was fast and the ladies serving us were friendly. We left with happy and filled stomachs.
I am extremely fortunate to live right across the street from this gem. Amazing food combined with excellent customer service. On this particular occasion, I ordered the Jambbong (Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup) and the Korean Sweet and Sour Chicken. The amount of seafood that was in the noodles was incredible especially at $8.99. Shrimp, clam, mussel, and squid were all in attendance and they did not cheap out on the amount of ingredients. As someone who has tried their fair share of sweet and sour chicken, this one definitely takes the crown. Extremely light and crispy batter coated with an amazing sweet and sour sauce. This place comes highly recommended.
Nice servers. Tastes like home-made food. Love their table cooking, pork belly. 👍 their menu has lots of choices to choose from. Side dishes are different each time.
Tasty side dishes. Good food. Osam-bulgogi is recommended. Home-made Makgolli is amazing, better than bottled variety. Service is between mediocre and okay.
My first time (samgyupsal). Mother dearest is out of town, so daddy and I are trying new foods! We'll bring mommy later.
We had the samgyupsal (pork belly) table cooking for two. $33.99 on the menu? Something like that. Comes with tofu soup or soy bean soup, lettuce (for wrapping), two sauces (one tasted like peanut oil and salt, and the other was ssamjang (a spicy seasoned bean paste), raw garlic slices (for putting in your wraps) and two bowls of white rice. We chose tofu. Weird that for a two person combo, they give you one person's serving of soup...one bowl of it. Banchan (side dishes) for the night were kimchi, pickled radish, kimchi radish cubes, bean sprouts, japchae, and broccoli. Very good portion of samgyupsal, and the quality of it was great. Not bacon type pork belly. There were strips of fat, but small strips, so when we cooked it, what remained after cooking was tender meat without huge chunks of fat. Delicious. The meat also came with a large slice of onion.
I was quite concerned about the raw garlic, but the samgyupsal holds its own and the garlic doesn't overwhelm. My favorite wrap of the night (self-made, of course) was lettuce (duh), bite of rice, slice of garlic, piece of kimchi, slivers of pickled radish, and samgyupsal dipped in both sauces.
I don't know if there's a cap on banchan refills, but the cap on lettuce refills is one.
After we had eaten our fill, we had at least a third of our samgyupsal left, half a bowl of rice and all of our soup (we didn't even touch the soup because we had too much food). Total damage before tips came to just over $38.
Attentive service. Surprisingly good English by the staff. They have some private booths with buzzers/bells to get service. Those actually work. The servers respond. Nice thing about private booths is that there are cushions for the wooden benches. Will be back.
Friendly service, good value, good food. This place is one of the best if you're willing to drive a bit north of the Yonge Finch area. Definitely try their grilled pork belly five beer/Soju combo - its the best out there.
Nice Family Restaurant with Great Food. My mom wanted to try authentic Korean cuisine (and the rest of us kids refused to head down to Bloor Street due to the lack of parking in that neighborhood), so my brother's Korean friend recommended Cho won. The service was really fast. The waitress were friendly and helpful (especially when we had a hard time deciding what to order for our mom).
I personally loved "Kan Poon Gi" (Spicy fried garlic chicken) and Duk Bo Ki (rice cake with hot and spicy sauce and green onion and cabbage) - both were yummy, a hint to sweetness, not too spicy. These were also my mom's fav dishes.
We also had Dolsot Bibimbap (Heated stone bowl with veggies, meat, rice and fried egg), Japchae (clear noodles with pork, carrots, onion spinach and mushrooms) and Bulgogi Dupbap Dinner. They were pretty good. No surprises there.
I personally did not like Haemool Jeungol (Spicy Seafood Hotpot). It was too salty for my taste, plus the fish had lots of tiny bones which kinda scared me a bit. However, my dad couldn't get enough of it :-)
The soup is delicious but noodle is a bit too cooked. Lots of seafood is included in the soup. You have to try the seafood pancake.
Like I said, it’s a no-frills restaurant but their food hits the spot – their Korean sweet and sour chicken in particular, is the best I’ve had to date.
...boneless fried chicken was the best I have ever had...I would give it a 10/10. The quantity is enormous and the chicken isn’t over done, or too crunchy or too breaded. The sauce is a nice balance between sweet and savoury.
