Well here goes. 50 years ago, my boyfriend was the son of the first owner of The Viking. I knew most of the family and ironically, my then boyfriend's son, came over to the house I share just a couple of months ago as he knows a friend of mine. I was taken back. The circle does go around. I haven't been back since I moved out of the neighbourhood, but my 92 year father, just today, told me that when he went out to get fish & chips for a family meal, he went to The Viking on the Queensway. I couldn't believe it. Time to make a trip back to the neighbourhood as these are definitely the best of the best fish & chips anywhere.
A nice, clean, well kept, friendly restaurant. The chef was chatty and I gathered that he and his wife own and operate the place. The halibut was meaty with light batter - delicious! The fries are similar, solid potatoes and lightly deep fried. Chunky tartar sauce. Creamy coleslaw. Absolutely a good meal all around. I will definitely come back.
I'm shocked to see that this place only has 3.3 stars. I visited recently and was very impressed the restaurant was clean super clean, the food was fresh and amazing and the owner and his family were very kind to us, will definitely be returning!!! 5/5
Great fish and chips. Food is cooked fresh right in front of you. The owner and staff couldn't be nicer. It is a gem.
Best Fish and Chips!. My boyfriend's first foray into the world of fish and chips..he loved it! So fresh and sooo much better than the chain F&C places!!
The fish and chips are amazingly done. Everything is home made and always fresh. Ernie works hard and is very proud of his store you can see by how hard he works. As well as his grandson Andy that has become a part of the fish and chips at the Vikings. You can see how hard he works at the shop to make everything to perfection. ESP with his customer service skills that exceed other places. When you eat in there you feel the love and get to experience the delicious food. Everyone there treats their customers like gold. I come from St. Catharines to enjoy the place. I really love the fries as well :)
We discovered this hidden gem when we moved to south Etobicoke in 2010. The multi-generational owners are friendly and the food is great (especially the halibut), and, since a recent renovation, Viking has a very modern atmosphere the old-school charm (who doesn't want their fish wrapped in newspaper?). Highly recommended!
Good simple fish and chips. We moved to the High Park area recently and were looking for a good simple fish and chips shop for occasional take-out. Viking was a pleasant surprise with good moist fish lightly battered and great chips. We used to enjoy Penrose on Mt. Pleasant and Old Yorke on Laird as the best in mid-town Toronto. This simple shop is comparable and very inexpensive. Ernie and his wife are charming and seem to have a loyal local clientele. We'll be back.
Straight-Forward Goodness. We saw this place when dropping in Dino's Wood Fired Pizza a few doors down and noticed that it was full and brightly lit. It was a Friday which is a traditional fish day for the waspish clientele and that explained some of the traffic.
Next week we dropped in and grabbed a table after a short wait and a check-in with the busy waitress. The name of the place is 'fish and chips' so that is what we ordered. My wife asked for Halibut and the waitress upsold her to the cole-slaw with the meal. The slaw brought the plat to ten -dollars. I asked for haddock and the waitress explained that the halibut was fresh and the haddock frozen so I changed my mind.
The chips were awesome - just what you would expect and the fish perfect. Moist on the inside with a slightly crisp batter and a very elegant flavour. Every bite was an earthy pleasure. Simple delight in warm simple food.
The atmosphere is what one would expect from a busy place that has been there for more than 40 years. The guy that took my money was 80 years old if he was a day and everyone seemed in good spirits. The tables are kind of tight and the air is definitely chip-shop air.
All in all - a full recommend and we will be back next time we are in the area.
Every year on Good Friday, we go to Viking Fish and Chips on the Queensway. It's a neighbourhood gem.The halibut is so fresh and the batter is perfect; light and crispy.
