Decent price for above average food. I Highly reccomend trying the boiled dumplings. Overall good place if you like authentic halal Chinese food. Staff are ok with service, restaurant is generally clean, and there is plenty of seating but with lots of seating comes noise. Sometimes I go and I can't hear what the person next to me is saying.
This restaurant specializes in lamb and is one of my go-to places for lamb.
STEAMED LAMB DUMPLINGS
These dumplings were so fresh and soupy. It's highly addicting for lamb people!
HANDMADE NOODLE SOUP with LAMB
The handmade noodles were so good - fresh and perfectly aldente. The soup was a little bland (though some would say healthy and no msg) but I would've thought the lamb would bring flavour to it. But see below on how to make it even tastier! :)
LAMB SKEWERS
Really liked these skewers but found they put too much cumin that it sort of overpowers the lamb. But it's good if you like spicy which I do. What I ended up doing though is dunk pieces of skewer lamb into their handmade noodle soup so it made the soup a little spicier and the meat itself is now perfect . In terms of lamb skewers alone, I prefer the ones from Xin Jiang Restaurant still.
I liked the lamb with bread dish. This place is pretty descent size. It's clean too. Chicken fried rice was really delicious. Hot and sour soup is good as well. Overall I will recommend it to a friend.
If you love lamb, then you'll love this place. If you merely like lamb, even you might think it's a bit much.
Chinese Halal couldn't be more generic with their name. Judging by the look of it outside and the menu, I did not expect to walk into a aesthetically pleasing restaurant. It is a lot nicer than I imagined in my head. The menu is Northern style food that mixes the BBQ with spicy cuisine as well. Oh and lots of lamb options.
I've had the spicy jellyfish, BBQ lamb skewers, bbq beef skewers, BBQ lamb leg, Sesame lamb chops, and the beef pancakes. Despite the variety of it all, there are just so many inventive ways that they use lamb. The skewers were the best part of the meal as the bbq beef and bbq lamb skewers are incredible (and incredibly fatty as well at times). The meat is savory and tender, but can get a bit over spiced. They really lay on the cumin here.
The BBQ Lamb Leg was pretty good as it's a whole roasted shank, with the same seasoning as used for the skewers. The leg meat tears apart from the bone and you can pick at the meat from the bone at the end if you like. The Sesame Lamb Chops were good, but can be very gamey (some like that), so if you aren't a big fan of lamb, this dish might turn you off of it for a bit. The sesame flavor doesn't really come out, but the meat is still very tender and savory.
You come here if you want to have lamb or try multiple ways of eating it. The skewers are your best option here as they are very good. The place is clean and it's pretty nice inside. Service is good and free wifi is offered here as well.
We were fortunate to have some people come that were familiar with the cuisine and the language to help us get the most out of the extensive menu. I was a little paranoid not knowing exactly what I was eating, but that didn't stop me! I had never eaten lamb, so this was exciting.
A group of us got together for the celebrate the Year of the Lamb. We were fortunate to have some people come that were familiar with the cuisine and the language to help us get the most out of the extensive menu. I was a little paranoid not knowing exactly what I was eating, but that didn't stop me!
I had never eaten lamb, so this was exciting. Apparently, my mom was the only one in the family that liked it, so I didn't grow up with it.
We started with Lamb Soup and tea. A large bowl was placed on the lazy susan and the event organizer, Jennifer, started dishing it out. It was full of large lamb pieces and green veggies in a mild broth. A great starter.
After the soup, the plates started rolling in. Fried Lamb Tongue, Fried Rice, Sliced Lotus Roots and various Lamb Skewers were placed on in the center. The lamb skewers were a little chewy, but packed with flavour. So packed with flavour, that I needed my tea refilled a few times. It was flavourful with a kick. On the flipside, the lotus didn't really taste like anything. The rice gave balance to the overload of taste from the skewers. I ate lamb tongue. I freaking ate lamb tongue. I didn't find out what it was until the next day when the pictures were posted on Yelp. It wasn't bad. It DID have a unique texture, but mixed with the veggies and sauce it was alright. Call it an exotic stir fry.
Next entrees to arrive were Lamb Pancakes, Beef and Lamb Dumplings, Sesame Lamb Chops, BBQ Lamb Chops, Spicy Fried Cabbage and the BBQ Lamb Shank. I love dumplings and these were no exception. Lightly pan fried and full of meat, both the lamb and beef dumplings were seasoned just right. My favourite was, hands down, the lamb pancakes. I do realize that the pancakes were a safe choice for someone like myself, but I simply couldn't resist them. There also wasn't enough tea in those tiny cups to put out the fire in my mouth from the skewers.
The lamb chops were fantastic; each with their own seasoning or sauce. I'm a sucker for anything sesame and they did not let me down. The BBQ chops were seasoned with cumin and it brought the heat. Most of the group liked these the best. Juicy and tender; both chops were winners. The lamb shank was HUGE. I'm glad it was already cut, because that would've been a lot of work. The BBQ flavour was similar to the seasoning on the chops; spicy and just plain good. The meat was tender; you didn't need a fork or knife to eat it.
This experience crushed my chopstick skills. I thought I was alright at using them; I don't starve, but I definitely need some practice. I was a little embarrassed. It's an excellent excuse to eat more Chinese/Japanese food though. :D
A great time! A great meal! I'd go back again. Good quality food and good service. Thanks to this experience, I'm definitely going to test the lamb waters again.
Delish Lamb Kebabs!. Lunch is a great deal! Tasty! The noodle soup has really tasty fresh noodles with a great texture to them. The buns with lamb filling is really nice. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The lamb kebabs are my fav. Very tasty.
At Taste of Asia, my favourite vendor was Chinese Halal Restaurant and conveniently, they have a location in North York. Reservations were made and a lot of lamb dishes were ordered. The restaurant decor is modern with plenty of large tables. Each round table was equipped with a glass lazy susan and had comfortable white leather chairs. For a late lunch, half of the tables were filled.
Chinese Halal Restaurant is a must visit for everyone who loves lamb! Even if you don't like lamb, there are other dishes there I am sure you will enjoy. Chinese Halal Restaurant is clean, has good service and has amazing food. Make sure to drop by if you are in the area, cause I am going back for sure :)
lamb, lamb, lamb... Chinese Halal Restaurant is the place to go if you want to try some delicious chinese halal food traditional to regions of North West China. You can enjoy traditional spicy kebobs/skewers here, along with many different Beef and Lamb dishes, but you won't find any pork in this restaurant. This is a nice place to come with friends to explore and tastes some of their tasty food. The Beef Noodle Soup pictured above consists of handmade noodles that taste delicious ($5.99 + tax on the lunch special menu!). They specialize in making Lamb and there are many must-try items incuding: Lamb skewers, Mini Spicy Lamb Chops, Lamb Noodle Soup and Fried Sesame Lamb Chops (my favourite)! With all this meat, its nice to choose one of their delicious chinese veggie dishes to share. Chinese Halal Restaurant has lots of seats, and getting a table for large groups is usually not a problem. It is located at the plaza at Leslie & Finch in North York and the prices are pretty cheap for the amount of yummy food you get.
