Sat at a table with a show. While our cook was not as good at the show as some of the others it was fun and good. Just a little different for a night out. $124 with tax and tip.
dre: In Yorkville, there's a Japanese restaurant called Yamato. It has several teppanyaki tables so we decided to go there for lunch. Reservations are highly recommended as this place is very popular! The lunch prices are very decent as well. You can start from $9.99 for a beef teppanyaki meal! I went all out and got chicken and shrimp ($15) as well as some sake. It was a really good value considering the chef puts on a show for you too! The meal also came with veggies. If you want fried rice though, it's an extra $5. It comes with white rice as default.
The man standing at the front wasn't very friendly, which was kind of off putting, but the service at our table was amazing. We had Anna as our server and Romeo as our chef. The drinks kept coming and the food was awesome. The onion soup was good, the salad was just ok and definitely no complaints about our mains. My filet mignon was cooked perfectly. Banana crepe for dessert was the perfect happy ending to a great meal.
Great Japanese for the city. Food is quite similar to japan and taste amazing. Easy to find Japanese beers and sake, feeling like in japan..
Amazing teriyaki. Very nice place and attentive staff. A bit on the pricey side because of its location in Yorkville. Luckily enough the food is worth it. The tepanyaki show is a bonus but guests that watch will have their clothes smelling like the restaurant for the whole day.
Absolutely Exquisite. I absolutely adore Yamato. My discovery of this restaurant is quite a funny story. I went out with a famous pro race car driver who decided to take me here because he thought I was of Japanese descent(which I am not ..). Let that be the first clue how this date went. Upon arrival we went straight to the grill where he insisted we order just about every dish to try. Well if he was planning to splurge I surely was not going to stop him. The Chef put on a marvelous show, flinging his tools in the air and thoroughly chopping every piece of our food. However, during the chefs performance I was forced to engage in awful small talk about how many different cars this guy owned and what an amazing view he had from his mansion bedroom balcony. (BARF!)
Luckily, once the food was prepared he shut his dreadful, narcissistic self up with edamame and salmon teriyaki. WHICH MAY I ADD WAS MY ORDER! I wasn't planning on sharing but his pesky hands kept grabbing at my plate.
Anyways, the food was delicious and now I dine here at least once two weeks. The date? horrendous. I hope his car runs off the tracks in his next race.
Best Teppanyaki Lunch. I love going here for their Teppanyaki lunch. It's a way better deal than the pricier dinner. You still get the great service and the "entertainment" factor of the chef cooking in front of you. The Sirloin is the best, in my opinion.
Sushi is very good too.
I've been twice and both times the tappanyaki was both entertaining and delicious!!! The lobster and steak are amazing and the fried rice is addictive! I love this restaurant and I definitely recommend it along with their MUST try lychee berry martini!! One of my favourite places in Toronto in a beautiful area too!
Favorite place in toronto
Just 3 words: green garlic butter!!! Can't wait to go back!!!
Teppanyaki was outstanding! Green garlic butter- looks like wasabe- is their key flavoring. Sushi pizza was less than average. Very nice decor
Best sushi pizza in T.O.. Yamato probably makes the best sushi pizza in all of Toronto. Unlike most places their base is thinner and crispier with excellent toppings. Their food and service is consistently good.
Best Teppanyaki. This is the best teppanyaki I've had in a long time. The atmosphere was great, the chef's were wonderful and the food was delicious. Can't wait to go back.
Best Teppanyaki in town. There really is no other competition in town that is comparable in my opinion. Sure, there a lot of teppanyaki restaurants but most are no good or overrated (i.e. Benihana at the Fairmont downtown). 1 caveat though is lunch is way better value than dinner. I almost never go for dinner because the prices go way up for essentially the same items (they will give you slightly more and add a salad). They also have decent sushi and sashimi since it's an authentic Japanese operated restaurant.
The best Japanese restaurant in Toronto!!! Love it, love it, love it!!!!! Sushi pizza is the best and very original. The staff is very sweet and professional. My son lives this place. It is pricy though so keep that in mind :-)
Very good. I've been more than once, never disappointed. Probably my favourite Teppanyaki in Toronto.
Favorite tepanaki in the city... And the prices are great, including very affordable wines. I love this place for large dinner parties
The teppanyaki really is top notch and very entertaining. Great service makes this one of the best Japanese restaurants in Toronto.
The best one around there!
A couple of my friends organized a special holiday get-together at Yamato Japanese Restaurant (24 Bellair Street) in Yorkville. We had a Tuesday evening dinner reservation for seven people at a teppanyaki table 6:30pm. The area around the restaurant in Yorkville was festively decorated! :)
Yamato serves simple Japanese food as well as Teppanyaki at the back of the restaurant. I was surprised to see they had another seating area through a hallway and the restaurant turned out to be a lot bigger than I expected. Since it is located at half basement, the lights were quite dim even for lunch service. I personally prefer brightly lit restaurants when I am there for lunch but I guess we were somewhat seated by the window so it wasn't too bad.
Yamato is divided into two section, one for teppanyaki and one for sushi. Both options are amazing but I always like to sit by the teppanyaki chef. It is always really entertaining to see how the chef could make an onion tower and lit it on fire. Watch out for your eyebrows! (joking, it is totally safe)

The restaurant is located downstairs and easily recognizable with its sign and large windows. It was still pretty quiet when I arrived. I immediately noticed how friendly the service staff was, and this actually remained consistent throughout the night. The room with all of the teppanyaki tables is massive, and so cleanly, sleekly designed.
I was given a hot towel for my hands and a glass of water. After we placed our teppanyaki orders, we each got miso soup and salad. Both were good, and I felt like they were larger than usually found in other places.
And then we experienced some teppan-tainment! Our chef was not a particularly talkative type, and confirmed with each of us who had ordered what. As always, I couldn`t believe how easy everything looked. The slicing was all so smooth! The infamous onion volcano was the highlight.
TERIYAKI SPECIAL
U.S. choice cut sirloin and dark meat chicken teriyaki
$28
I got a teppanyaki combination dinner of steak (medium-rare) and chicken! The steak was about half the size of those of my friends`, who had gotten the ribeye meal, haha. We watched the chef melt garlic butter on it and I could feel myself drool. The chicken got the teriyaki treatment. Both were amaaaazing. I was really glad to have the different flavours as it kept things interesting for me. The vegetables were also nice, though I think I could have used more. My leftovers were taken to-go in a styrofoam container which they packed up and even provided chopsticks and a napkin for me.
We left just after 8pm and the restaurant was completely full. I don`t mind communal style set-ups, especially for the number of people that we had in our group, but it made communicating from opposite ends of the table a little difficult. Still, A nice restaurant for a special occasion in Yorkville! Of course, it wasn`t inexpensive, but my friends and I enjoyed the entertainment and the food. The service was also great, maintaining efficiency and friendliness throughout the course of our dining experience.
