Review Detroit Eatery Restaurant - Toronto

Mel Drake
Local classic. It isn't fancy, but the food is generous and delicious, the staff treat you like family and it's got that real feel of the place everyone goes to from the regulars introducing their new baby to the grey haired ladies having a fun wine night together. Classic rock on the radio and a huge tv on the sports of the moment, it's just friendly and convivial and the perfect place for killing time with anyone you care to be with. Pure diner goodness.

This place is great, it's a classic breakfast and everything is done right. Eggs always cooked as ordered, bread is toasted and buttered perfectly, potatoes are delicious and just the right serving, the bacon is stiff with a bit of crisp and sweetness, and finally the coffee is a classic diner cup. So many places in Toronto have gone to do a "brunch" model that tries to do too much and ones still doing a standard bacon and eggs are under or over cooking various elements with little care for the craft. Detroit Eatery stands out as one of the last of its kind, even in Toronto. Only criticism, less Red Wings, more Tigers!!

I've been here many times and will continue to come again. It's an excellent place for an all-day breakfast. The Classic Diner Style. It has amazing Ambiance and friendly staff. There's really nothing you can say that's bad about this place. You're not expecting a five-star California Plate. But this place has everything you need if you're looking for quick comfort food

Best burgers in town. That's it. That's really all you need to know. The breakfast is good too, and it's a super popular Danforth tradition to come by for bacon and eggs Sunday morning. But I recently went in for a hamburger dinner with my buds to catch the game and we had an amazing time. I lived in the neighborhood a long time, and it has really changed since we moved there in the 90s. But one thing that hasn't changed is the amazing burger, fries, gravy, and community at the Detroit Eatery. My favourite place on the whole strip. Love you guys!

Used to live a five minute walk away and out of all the places on the danny, this was my fave. It's not fancy, but very charming. I love the decor and the atmosphere. The staff is fast and you literally get your food 5 minutes after you order, and coffee is always topped up. If you're looking for a fast, affordable and delicious greasy spoon in Toronto, this is the place. I don't live in Toronto anymore and I miss it so much.

How is it I've never known about this place before? This is a textbook example of what people mean when they lovingly refer to a "greasy spoon" restaurant. There's nothing fancy about the place (and if you've got hate for the Detroit Red Wings, move along). What you get is delicious food, friendly people, and fantastic prices. Five stars because it's a bit run down, yes, but the prices really are incredible, and the food has all been spot-on, for everything we've tried here.

My favorite local hangout for a good and quick breakfast, burger or beer. I recently stopped in for brunch after being away for some time and I was reminded how great Detroit Eatery is. Unpretentious, always friendly, quick and relaxed service, and great food for a deal on Danforth. Alex is always there and happy to see you, and guaranteed great service from Sam if she’s in. The World Cup first brought me there as it’s one of the few places with multiple TVs and channels to watch your favorite game. I’ve even made new friends sitting along the counter. Don’t bother if you’re all dressed up and after haute culture, but if you’re simply hungry and after easy friendly relaxed company, this is your place. It’s one spot I hope stays perfectly frozen in time, while the city swirls in a whirlwind around it.

I could not be more impressed with this place--What a fantastic experience. My boyfriend and I went out craving some pub food and then stumbled across Detroit Eatery, and I'm so glad we did! Our waiter, Arden, was super friendly & attentive to all his customers. This was our first time there & he took the time to ask us our names, and questions like where we're from. Incredibly personable, and friendly service. The food was fantastic, and although it wasn't what we intended on going out for, we still left full as could be, and with leftovers. The prices were amazing for the portion sizes as well. We ordered a cheeseburger, a poutine, the chicken souvlaki dinner (chicken, salad, mashed potato & garlic bread) and a chocolate and strawberry milkshake which worked out to about $40. My boyfriend said his burger was one of the best burgers he's ever had, and my souvlaki dinner was perfect. We will most certainly be returning!! The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming, and makes you feel right at home. It seems that they have many regulars, which I find can sometimes be tough in a small setting, but we were treated and attended to just as well. So that was really nice to see! Overall we had a great first experience and definitely can't wait to return to explore more of the menu :)

Classic greasy spoon. I had the exact sort of bacon and eggs meal you would expect from a place like this, and they were there with more coffee every time my cup got low. The server was friendly and the decor is perfect for what it is.

Best greasy spoon style on the Danforth. Food is awesome. Cooked solid and tasty. Service is quick and friendly because most who go once go again and again and again. And so will you!!!!

Stumbled upon this place today on a random trip up the Danforth and I couldn't have been any more ecstatic about it. Grew up in Windsor and as a die hard Red Wings fan this place felt like a home away from home. Atmosphere reminded me exactly of a tavern you'd find in downtown Detroit with tons of Detroit memorabilia. The menu reflected the city of Detroit as well. They even had chicken on a stick! Portion to price ratio was also fantastic. Massive burgers! I will definitely come back here to watch some Wings games this season. Detroit vs Everybody!

One of the best, greasiest spoon diners in Toronto. Definitely the best on the Danforth. Here you can get classic Americana cuisine as well as the usual Greek fare found in the area. Excellent cooks and service and your coffee will always be refilled.

This was recommended to us by someone who worked nearby. It didn't disappoint. Loved the atmosphere, the staff were friendly and the food was very reasonably priced. It was also family-friendly (we went with our three kids). We loved it!!

I have tried about 5 different dishes in this place, and they've all been fantastic. This has to be the best greasy spoon restaurant with a wide variety of foods, and friendly service. Recommended highly!

Boyfriend and I went in looking for a good burger, something casual and not too pricey. We were not disappointed. He got the Banquet Burger (bacon and cheese), while I got the Greek Burger (Tzatziki and Feta, our waiter's recommendation). Decor is very sports-heavy, and I would stay clear on game days. The regulars and the staff felt very "bro-ish". Wouldn't go back with my girlfriends, but it's a great little hole-in-the-wall for me and my boyfriend. Solid food, highly recommend the Greek burger, it was amazing (especially for the price)! We both left super full and will definitely be coming back.

The owner is a cut above. Dropped in randomly on a family vacation, the owner went above and beyond to make us at home. We have a lot of Greek options at home, this blew them all out of the water. Tried the burger, slovaki, Greek salad,Greek fries, and a couple other items. All of them 5/5.<br/><br/>Try it, you won't regret it!!

Came here with my Grandmother. Owner was very unpleasant. In a terrible mood. Terrible experience. Would not recommend the place. Decent food.

Detroit Eatery - an honest diner with a Detroit Red Wings edge. Energy & enthusiasm from the door!<br/>A few bites from our full experience review - <br/>"Detroit Eatery is one of those stalwart spots sticking to its roots and refusing to cave in to trends. "<br/>"As much as the dish sounded like a heart-attack on a plate, we did not find it to be that overwhelming - as the steak was more of a large minced party. Ma Chérie struggled to make it half way with the steak and the older gentlemen which we found out is the owner had to comment that she needs to eat up."

This is an awesome place! Amazing pulled pork.   It is the kind of place you go if you are a real down home kind of person who likes a small homey place.

I stumbled upon this place about 6+ weeks ago when I was looking for a place for a decent burger in the east end as I recently started working out here. I read some online reviews and decided to give it a try. As mentioned by others, the decor is quite dated but with an excellent charm about it. The place is nothing fancy but the food is top notch especially considering  the fair price that you pay. The first thing that I tried there was the burger and it was amazing. Second best only to MY homemade burgers ;-). It is well seasoned and cooked perfectly. Since that night I have returned many times.. although I didn't eat much at the beginning.....I have sampled a few other items..especially the daily specials (7.95 or 9.50 depending on which special interest you) which include fries, soup and coffee (but really who needs coffee???)..The Toasted Western is just AWESOME!!! and the Philly cheese Steak is right up there as well...did I mention that they have $4.00 beer (bottles) and there are quite the number characters in there (both customers and staff) who provide an entertaining evening....some evenings - for far too long!!..lol....luckily Chester Stn is about a 2 minute walk (or a 4 minute stumble) from the Detroit. Should I make it there on my way home tonight as I am planning, that will make it my 14th visit in 14 working days...I like to take the weekends off and share my "love" with a few pubs in the west end of Toronto. Lately I've been on a Toasted Western kick.....<br/>It's Thursday I've already had 2 of them as the special..this week..(I didn't eat  any thing on Wednesday - strictly a barley diet that night)...I think I'll give the Hot Roast Beef a try tonight..someone was eating one the other night and now I know I HAVE to have it...A mound of roast beef with fries (or mashed) and veggies smothered in (totally delicious!! gravy) for $9.95..I cant wait...OH - WAIT A MINUTE!!..I think that Spaghetti is on the specials menu tonight..decisions..decisions! If you are looking for upscale dining with upscale prices then go to an upscale restaurant but if you are looking for a place that consistently serves great food at reasonable prices and has a great atmosphere then head to The Detroit Eatery - you will not be disappointed..<br/>Although I am in NO WAY affiliated with the Detroit, I hope that Chris reads this and it makes him forget about last Friday night when I was there with my brother and son...OUCH!!!!...but that's a story for another forum...lol.. See you there tonight!!..Cheers!!<br/><br/>

Came here for brunch one morning and although it's pretty inexpensive, the amount of grease that was on my plate could have filled a coffee cup. Dark and dingy and the servers were grumpy.

This is an awesome neighbourhood spot we have been frequenting for 25 years. Weekend breakfasts are cheap and cheerful and good, and there are often lineups out the door. Tonight it was dinner. A Detroit Burger and Greek Burger were perfectly prepared on toasted buns for under $7 each :) Try the to-die-for milkshakes made old-school style in those metal tumblers. SOOOOO good!

The Detroit Eatery. Dear Everyone: Walking distance from all over the Danforth area, I often wonder how many people know that the Detroit Eatery (in addition to great burgers and the like) make the very best vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate milkshakes that are available in the city of Toronto. <br/><br/>Peter Taylor

Okay... It's not fancy. It's a diner with diner food. But for cheap, tasty breakfast and a super casual atmosphere, it's great. The maple bacon is yummy.

Yeah,,,No!. Sorry. Tried this as it had an 86% like rating. Had the Greek omelette. Dry, overcooked and if there was cheese in there, then it disappeared between the kitchen and the table. It must have been 60 degrees in there. Not even the brown stuff they call coffee could warm me up. The guy behind the counter was pleasant.
Luanne
Horrible coffee. Please, please get better coffee! Your current blend tastes like brown dishwater.

Deathrow cheese burger. Lets just say, there are 1 000 000 burgers joints in the World, lets just say there is.To try everyone in a year, you d have to eat 2800 burgers a day, thats one every 30 seconds,ya following? So you set about eating one cheese burger every 30 seconds for a year. And taking notes on each one and the calculating your data and what not,and it takes a while so your hungry, when its all said and done, the Detroit wins and ya can t wait to get back for some of that seasoned beef. The slaw and sour pickle with rings make for a incredible $10.00 meal.(includes tip.)FYI it is a Red Wings bar NHL,And they are not renaming it the "Buffalo"NFL fans.Enjoy!

I haven't eaten here because I never made it past the front door. I'm not sure how a place can call itself the 'Detroit' Eatery and then refuse to show the Detroit Tigers play game 5 against the Yankees in the ALDS on one of their two screens in favor of a Leafs game.

Awesome!. We have been going to this great little rock and roll diner/sports cafe for ages and they never disappoint.<br/>Chris the owner and staff are super friendly and the food is always great. After sampling many, many burgers around the GTA ,the Detroit burger is still my favorite.Huge homemade burg on a toasted bun with cheese and peameal bacon.Yummmm!
