We loved our dinner at Greenwood. The ribs were delicious and the brisket was sublime. The fresh fries and cold slaw rounded out the meal beautifully. I can't watt to go back.
Just a few bites from our full review -
"Welcomed by an R2-D2 BBQ at the storefront, sticking out boldly, we knew we were in for a treat with a twist."
"We really enjoyed the smoked brisket topped with caramelized onion - it was tender and just fatty enough."
Toronto BBQ week, presented by Samuel Adams, had officially ended yesterday. There were a total of 15 BBQ restaurants participating throughout the GTA, offering a $15 dish that included a pint of Samuel Adams Boston Lager.
This is the best BBQ I've been to in T.O. so far and I'm making a concerted effort to hit them all. Great meat, hands down fantastic. I would say add that I found there was a little too much sauce on the ribs, but that's something you find in most BBQ places outside of the southern States. That said, next time I'll order sauce on the side b/c Greenwood's meat can definitely hold it's own.
We had the pork ribs, brisket, pulled-pork, brisket brioche sandwich, and Mac 'n' Cheese with pulled-pork. Everything included in this Meatageddon was fantastic, but the ribs and brisket were par excellence. For sides there was 'slaw, hush puppies and (great!) fries. Honestly, I'm not sure how I'm able to move today.
As for the restaurant, it's a little cramped, but has a great Vibe. And -very important- there's Star Wars paraphernalia everywhere. We asked our waiter about it and it turns out the owner is a huge fan. I love that they've reflected themselves in the ambience.
You won't find Beef Ribs on the menu, which was a bit disappointing, but I would go back in a second. Great staff, great food, simply fantastic!
The Greenwood smokehouse sit unassumingly on Danforth st, I’d walked past it once without realizing until we were invited to a small event to try their new menu.
On arrival we were each given a smoked pear mint julep, the pears smoked in house, and shown to their outside patio.
It was cozy and intimate with the smoker in the corner, definitely a quaint vibe.
As we sat and drank we were given or first entrée, rib tips smoked then deep fried and double glazed with Memphis and Carolina sauce. Needless to say they were textural dynamite and flavoursome.
They were cooked really well and each sauce complemented the other without overpowering.
We smashed down the rib ends and were then given a glass of Kensington watermelon wheat beer, which if you haven’t had is fantastic, and a shot of bookers to further wet our appetite and bring us into the Deep South.
It was at this point we went inside to sit down for our mains, out first a Cobb salad. Be warned, it was not your average cob salad, it had, blue cheese, egg, bacon, smoked turkey, avocado, tomato and arugula with a light dressing. Combined there were divine, a full array and balance of flavor and texture, something I could get behind, and I’m not a salad man.
Next out were 3 St Louis style ribs each done differently, the first a Memphis bbq sauce, the second a Carolina mustard bbq sauce with the last being their Memphis style dry dusted.
All were smoked to perfection and coated liberally; my personal favourite was the Memphis BBQ, sweet and sticky and just a touch of tang.
For the main event each table was given a platter of their other smoked goods, a stack of 1.5 hr smoked, fried and glazed wings, a mound of 15 hr brisket slices smothered in bbq sauce and pickled onions, their pulled pork and 3 sides, double smoked beans, a 3 cheese Mac and cheese and their coleslaw.
I started with the brisket and coleslaw, the brisket was soft, meaty, and fatty and simply melted in your mouth with the onions giving a crunch and zing while the coleslaw was not over dressed and retained a good crunch.
The beans were my favourite side; double smoked and made with a chili base they stole my heart.
I enjoyed the beans with the pulled pork, they complemented each perfectly.
The mac and cheese was cheesy as but still maintained airiness about it.
I made one mistake that night, I ate the wings last. I will regret that till the day I go again. They were amazing, so crisp, slightly smokey, sweet but spiced and altogether awesome.
Last out was a smoked peach cobbler with a crème anglais, it was as rich as it was smokey, which was a considerable amount. Luckily the sweet toppings helped balance the smokey peaches.
The food the Greenwood smokehouse is putting out is absolutely on point and is well worth checking out.
I live in the neighbourhood, but first tried their food at a recent fundraising event. It was awesome enough to make us want to visit the restaurant in person :) We were not disappointed. The small platter was ample for two, with beef brisket, wings, ribs, pulled pork and coleslaw. Everything was perfect. We shared a mixed salad as well. Fun, casual atmosphere, great food and good staff. A winning recipe for sure!
First off, I love BBQ.
Greenwood Smokehouse did not disappoint :) Fantastic brisket, delicious chicken wings, yummy smoked flavour and great saucy ribs. The salad that we had the pleasure of tasting at the Greenwood Smokehouse Menu Tasting was absolutely delicious, although we were surrounded by meat, we were asking for more. The cole slaw and mac and cheese, holy yummmmms. I also really enjoyed the watermelon beer and I'm not much of a beer drinker at all. We finished with smoked peach crumble and it was the perfect ending to a great night. Definitely recommend this gem on the Danforth.
We were a large group and the restaurant did well to accommodate us in every way. I'm an avid BBQ smoker myself, so I take good care in providing the proper feedback to my fellow enthusiasts. The menu offers up your typical fare but kicks it up a notch! The wings were top shelf, the ribs were unreal, and the pulled pork was perfect. All of our side dishes were the proper compliment and the price was right. Well done, Greenwood. Well done.
Best brunch I've had in such a long time.
I had the special - brisket, bacon, and pulled pork on top of a crispy hashbrown, topped with an egg and asiago. It was AMAZING!
My sister had the breakfast poutine, which I also at some (lots) of, and it was great too. Nice drip coffee as well.
I'll definitely be back for all the other meals :)
Tasty angus burgers. This place has delicious angus burgers. The flavor of the meat really pops and is unlike any other restaurant burger I have had. Definitely one of my favorites. Be sure to get your fries with the tasty chipotle mayo. The restaurant itself is small, but cozy. I enjoyed my visit and would love to visit again soon to try more menu items.
A great treat. OK, so I'm a BBQ maven. I've been to many Q restaurants and also own my own smoker. I know what goes into making great ribs and how to judge them. The ribs at GSB are excellent, nothing less. They are tender to the edge of FOTB, falling off the bone, but keep enough texture so you feel the bite. Perfect. The flavour is just right with a nice bite and no burn. I'll be back there to try other menu items, and if they live up to the ribs, I may move in.
A great addition to the Danforth. Great atmosphere, attentive and kind servers and fantastic food. Great vegetarian options too which is so cool for a smokehouse.
I've had the ribs, mac and cheese, mushroom burger and fries which were all excellent.
Worth a try. So, I'll be honest, I know absolutely nothing about the world of smoke. At some point in my youth I consumed a dish that contained some type of cheap hickory sauce and I'm still scarred from the experience. But since Greenwood opened in my neck of the woods, I decided to overcome my fears. At first it was touch and go, I entered the restaurant and almost staggered back by the immense smell from the smoker. I almost bolted but stuck it out and ordered a "dry" beef brisket sandwich, dry meant not smothered in sauce. What came to my table was a revelation, juicy, peppery, beefy with a slight smoke flavour and zero hint of hickory. This sandwich blows Leslieville Pumps out of the water. Unless you're super, super hungry I don't recommend getting a starter or fries as we did, way too much food, next time I'll order a salad with my darling beef.
You can definitely taste the savoury mix of dry rub, paprika and lusciously thick Memphis BBQ sauce. The meat was so tender it flaked right off with just a nudge of the fork. I could not help myself and ate it with my hands so I can start licking my fingers. I actually made somebody else order the ribs as they were apparently watching me as I ate. LOL. I have been told over and over again I tend to make people hungry as they watch me eat.
