When you think of a steak dinner, the first thing that comes to mind would probably either be the word “fancy” or “expensive”, depending on your outlook on things and your social standing. It makes sense: meat is valuable, and steaks are made up of the best, most choice cuts of meat. To go along with the price of the meal, expensive restaurants usually lavish up everything: chandeliers light up the whole place, a small fortune of candle wax is used to illuminate each table, an expensive band is hired to play Beethoven’s Symphonies on their orchestra, the guests wear ornate ballroom masks [the kind that cover up your face], and all the waiters look like Batman’s butler Alfred. Because of the fancy decor, the restaurant can then ram the prices through the roof, allowing in only the city’s most elite and rich clientele, which I’m sure the Freemasons and Illuminati of our society enjoy during all of their social dinners, because it perfectly encapsulates the classism in their ways.
Good ol' diner feel steakhouse. Place not busy, attentive servers. Big portion for it's price. Great for a casual eating place/date/catch up with friends. Decor gives you the old school restaurant feel. I'll come back again.
The tulip like most describe is a no frills diner that serves up various cuts of steaks and other classic diner menu items.
The tulip's atmosphere is outdated. Looks like it hasn't been touched up ever. Same appearance from when I was there over ten years ago.
The food was good. The portions enormous and quite good value for the money paying. The proteins were definitely the highlight of the meals. The mashed potatoes had a glue consistently and the home fries were your standard diner fare. Two meals with salads, mains and desserts were 68$! Not bad when one is a 24oz porter!
The service was great. The place wasn't very busy so the server was very attentive. If you want a cheap steak fix and are in the east end, it's a worth to try.

You want a hearty filling traditional no frills breakfast? Look no further. Restaurants have come and gone but this Leslieville landmark has stuck around since 1929 for a reason. Don't go in thinking you are going to be doing some fine dining. This place is a diner. And proud of it. For me, it's a breakfast or brunch must do. I haven't been for dinner but I'm willing to bet the steaks and pork chops are super yummy.
Usually there is a bit of a line up for breakfast but this morning, it was all clear and we got a window seat! I noticed that they've got booths now in the front area which is a nice addition. Our waiter was quick to the table to take our orders and back again with beverages before we knew it. You know how sometimes you are in the middle of talking with your buds and you suddenly realize that it's been way too long and where the hell is your food? Not here. The food showed up before we ever starting thinking about how long it was gonna be before it got there. Yay! Poached eggs were done properly and back bacon looked juicy and not overdone. I ordered the chopped sirloin (my favourite so I always skip over the 6oz and go for the 9oz) and eggs. It comes with a generous portion of home fries along with a side of toast and will run you about $12 (under $10 for the 6oz version). We could have done with a coffee re-fill sooner than it happened but once the wait staff noticed, the refills kept a comin'.
Most people opt for the Tulip Big Breakfast and I get why. 3 eggs, 2 sausages, 2 bacon strips, 2 pieces of peameal bacon, 2 buttermilk pancakes, home fries and toast for under $10! Insane!
The place is cozy and sunny, the food is satisfying and tasty and the service is spot on. What more could you ask for on a Saturday morning when you are feeling a smidge hungover ? Nothin' I tells ya. Nothin'.
Friendly service & great food. We bought a coupon deal and enjoyed our food very much.
The "Garlic Shrimp" appetizer is awesome, lots of cheese and very tasty. My husband said he wished he could substitute his main course for more garlic shrimp lol.
He had "Beef Tenderloin - 8oz." and thought that felt like 10 oz. I had "Baked Filet of Salmon (8oz)", average, not too impressed.
The waitress is very friendly and funny. The deal we bought includes two wines. We didn't really want any wine so she let us order other beverage instead. So we had a beer and a hot chocolate. For dessert, we had banana pudding and apple crumble dessert. Liked very much.
Best steak in town right here. This has to be the best steak in Toronto right here. Marination and aging of the steak is perfect. Sure Keg has a good steak and Barberian's can do some things well but Tulip has it nailed. Sometimes I think Tulip's steak tastes even better than blonde pussy. And that is saying something
Delicious old school Toronto gem huge portions of great food. You cannot go wrong with prime rib dinner or of course any of the extra thick steaks. Decor is meh but it's an old greasy spoon and the prices and portions can't be beat
Good food. Old school restaurant with huge portions, my brothers favorite. They age they're own steaks in the basement.
Good. It was a great place for steak but lots of great steak places have opened up but was there recently and it still is good and priced great.
Good food, I enjoy on weekend special lamb shanks, desarts to die for
Pretty decent food, big portions and fair priced menu with specials. can't ask for more
Have been going here for 6 years and it's always amazing :) The new management is great. The porter house is always good and usually never ever finish it's so big. It looks shady from the outside but it's the best little steak house in east Toronto, and the prices ate really good. If u want that dinner feel definately check this place out. :)
Classic. A bit of a timeless "classic" no frills approach to both food and decor. Usually seems to always be busy, good steaks but nothing overly fancy. We visit about once a year only as we are local to it. Price wise you may find a more interesting meal in the area for about the same.
OK - so appearances aren't always everything. From the outside, The Tulip looks like a pretty sketchy restaurant and the neighborhood doesn't do much to convince you otherwide (with a seedy XXX video store across the street).
A friend had recently dined at the Tulip and recommended it to us. A day or two later, we received another recommendation to check it out. We thought - what the heck, lets see what the Tulip has to offer. Taking the recommendation that the steaks here are good, that's what I had. And it didn't disappoint. The mash potatoes on the other hand were pretty terrible and I the veggies were frozen and a little soggy by the time my plate reached the table.
The service was great! The staff was super friendly and our dinner was severed quick.
I'd definitely go back!
Nice diner. We like to go to the Tulip once in a while. A good club sandwich or a nice steak with a pile of buttered bread! Service is usually great. There is some line-up on the week-ends.
Love it. Delicious steaks, great desserts, rough and tumble atmosphere and reasonable prices. Also love the buttered bread! Been coming for 20 years now. Highly recommended!
Good Food/ Bad Service. Food is well priced, and pretty good for what your paying. Fine, the service isn't great, but that's management's problem. The owner is a bit of a basketcase, and its starting to affect the waitstaff. But service aside, the food rocks.
Reservations. Be aware that the Tulip will charge you $15 per person, for every person less than the number you make a reservation for.
I can understand why, as this place is busy.
Food is good, basic, very slightly above standard diner fare.

I first went to the Tulip back in 1996 and it was great back then. Thankfully, not much has changed aside from moving two doors down about a decade ago. The Tulip Steakhouse sits on the edge of Leslieville bordering the Beach area (also known as “the Beac
Cheap, fast, and simple breakfast!
The steak and eggs comes with a proper steak - not a sad, thin breakfast steak.
Eggs are always cooked perfectly.
“Famous for their world-class steaks and all-day breakfasts since 1929,” The Tulip Steakhouse is a Beaches landmark… good for three square meals a day.It would be difficult to find a better all-day breakfast than The Tulip Big Breakfast. The decadence of this platter is the stuff of legend. Here we have 3 Eggs, 2 Sausage, 2 Bacon Strips, 2 Slices of Peameal Bacon and 2 Buttermilk Pancakes… all for a Tenner. ‘Nough said about their breakfast. The lunch options are just as bountiful; the Warm Beef Brisket on a Kaiser with Dip being my current favourite in the rotation. Picture 9oz of fresh-cut Brisket, served with Spicy Mustard, Coleslaw and a Kosher Dill. Though probably not as good as your Bubbie’s brisket, it’s a heaping pile of heaven nonetheless. Other standouts include the 9oz Corned Beef or Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwiches. I would recommend taking a pass on the Reuben Sandwich simply due to the sogginess of the bread from the Sauerkraut.New to The Tulip are their Retro Lunch Specials, which offer-up the Soup of the Day or a House Salad with any of their classic sandwiches, including one heck of a Club House, for one low, low price.
