I had lunch today at Island Foods (Dufferin Street/King Street W). I've been going there since 1998 and it's my favourite place to get a chicken roti.
It's a popular spot at lunchtime. I got there at 11:45am and there was a bit of line-up. By noon, the line-up was outside the door. But the wait is worth it!
I got what I always get ... a boneless chicken roti. And as always, it was delicious!
After getting a recommendation to come here 5-10 years ago, I've finally made it.
I ordered my staple, boneless goat roti, medium pepper and they did not disappoint.
After giving up on a nearby competitor's goat roti I didn't have a good spot downtown so I'm glad to know there's an alternative now.
They're definitely in my top 5.
I have had many roti's but nothing compares to the one's made at Island foods. The quality of goat meat is always consistent, soft, hot and flavour full. Polite servers. Plus they always have a booth at the exhibition.
Pretty Good. My husband was longing for the food of his youth so we searched for Trinidadian food while visiting Toronto. Many of the reviews recommended this place. We were most interested in doubles and Dahl pouri for the roti shell . The rotis were very good - both the beef and the curry chicken (bone-in thigh) were tasty and not very spicy. The doubles were a disappointment. The channa inside had wonderful flavor but the doubles were thinner and gummier than any others we have ever had.
If we return to Toronto, we may return to this place for roti. We'll look at someone else's doubles before ordering those again.
Roti Lover!. The first time I ate here was because my work ordered out during a snow storm so I decided to give it a try. The Goat Roti is my favorite and it has just the right amount of spice! I went in for take out one day and the service was friendly and fast! Also a very reasonable price!
Have been working in the area for a few weeks and keep going back for the boneless chicken roti. Good price and tastes amazing! Took my unadventurous friend here and she loved it too! Always busy and I hear good things about everything on their menu
Great Roti. Great roti, I came 15 min before closing, the place was packed, didn't got the chance to eat there so I went home to eat it. Still was a very solid good roti, the amount of potatoes with the meat was proportionate and the curry resist the 2 layers of roti, lamb was fresh, the texture of the roti was soft and light. I liked it a lot, overall great place for a quick grub
BEST ROTI'S IN THE CITY.. SInce 98 I have been coming here. Had others, nothing compares anywhere else.
Best Goat Roti ever. Everything is fresh and flavorful.
Not the best but this place is always busy. They get packed over the lunch hour and staff are always sour but the food isn't *too* bad.
Excellent doubles. Especially when the shells are hot and fresh. So eggy and 'light'. Oxtail stew is nice too. Kinda salty but that's what a lot of people love. Thumbs up for the goat or shrimp roti. Everyone always gets the boneless chicken. But I ain't a fan of white meat. Live a little. Try something different, eh? OH! You must ask for extra gravy. The trick to the best and mess-free roti eating experience, people? Even if you're dining in, get your roti in a takeout foil envelope pouch. Then do not tear the bag open. Slide the roti up the foil pouch to eat. Start at a corner. You must bite AND SUCK the juices as you go along. No squirts, no drips (unless there's a tear somewhere). Just tasty goodness. So 'Bite and suck', people. (No lame twilight jokes please)
Greatest Rotis around you will not be disappointed. I crave them they're that good and I eat there at least twice a week. Get them plated with sauce over them Wow!!!
Delicious roti, though a little messy, ranks up there as one the best in the city. A lot will say baccus roti on queen is their favourite, but for me it's island hands down.
I hit up Island Food the other night right before closing which was perfect (almost) because there were few people there. Whenever I’ve gone in the day (especially during lunch and dinner times) it’s always busy! During peak times the the lineup is often right up to the door! It was almost perfect just because I usually love ordering the doubles but they were all out :(
I ended up ordering a beef patty and a boneless chicken roti. The beef patties here are the best I’ve ever eaten! The boneless chicken roti I’ve had on multiple occasions in the past and enjoyed it thoroughly. This time however, I asked them to top it off with some sauce/gravy and I didn’t enjoy it as much. My own fault, but the reason is because the sauce gets soaked into the roti and I didn’t get to enjoy the taste of the roti bread itself. I would recommend just ordering it normally.
Other items I’ve ordered in the past that I would recommend are: doubles (as mentioned) and the boneless chicken dinner which comes with curry chicken, curried veggies (cabbage, carrots and potatoes) with rice and peas.
