Wow- another whirl-wind of a weekend, and I cannot tell you what a treat it is to "allow" myself to sit down and blog. As the weeks of my dietetic internship come to an end, I find myself scrambling to finish up all of those last minute projects, and because the last week was so crazy at work in Gen Med staff relief, I didn't get any time to actually work on the academic stuff. As a result, I have been trying to catch up on that work all day today and yesterday, making Saturday night even more exciting. Our friends invited us out to F'Amelia, a casual Italian restaurant in Cabbagetown where our friend knows the chef and pastry chef. The place is pretty large with 3-4 rooms of tables and a small bar with seats. I liked the energy in the room, which I think was partially just because it was packed with people, and also related to the open-concept kitchen with an awesome view of the wood-burning pizza oven. I don't know if I'm alone, but seeing delicious food being prepared and literally transformed in seconds (as with the pizza oven) is exciting and energizing to me.Service was incredibly friendly and casual. There was lots of small talk, jokes, and super genuine smiles, and I felt the meal was perfectly paced. She probably could have been a bit more attentive with the water glass refilling, but I can excuse that as she was pretty slammed and had a lot of tables to tend to.Drinks are definitely my style. They had a variety of interesting offerings, and it was actually hard to choose, but I started with the Sofia (which had grapefruit juice, Belstar Proscecco, Cassis and Campari), and later on had a more citrusy take on a Whisky Sour. Both were really delicious. Both were really delicious, easy drinking and perfectly suited to the season.Okay, onto food. Soon after being seated, we were served two small squares of rosemary flat bread, a piece of foccacia and olive oil for dunking. All of the bread was absolutely delicious, I just wish we had a bit more! We tried: Chef's choice of 5 salumi/terrine and 3 cheeses with flat bread, sesame grissini, pickles, olives and berry jam: Everything on the tray was really delicious, I think my personal favourite was the terrine. I will say though that for the amount of meat, terrine, cheese and pate, we really needed more flat bread and grissini. Thank goodness my friend warned me to save my bread for this platter, or else I would have been eating pate by the spoon, and that's not nearly as enjoyable. I also would say we could have used a bit more jam as they only really gave us a teaspoon. Chilled pea soup with fresh mint: They split this in two for us so that it could be shared between the two couples. Fresh, very light and aromatic, but I wasn't as impressed as others. I found it a bit underseasoned for my preferences. Tagliatelle with braised rabbit, fava beans and wild mushrooms: I only tried a bite, but it was definitely delicious, and better than the pasta dish I had the night before. The rabbit was tender, and the fava beans were cooked perfectly. A nice portion too. Baked Lasagna: This wasn't really what I was expecting, as I am accustomed to a bechamel sauce layer or some type of ricotta filling layer in my lasagna, while this was literally sheets of pasta with meat sauce (heavy on the meat) and a thin layer of melted cheese on top. It was good, but not the best dish of the night. Campagnola Pizza with marinated artichokes, baby spinach, Ontario goat cheese, Italian sun dried tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil: The crust at F'Amelia is light, chewy, nicely crispy around the edges and not soggy in the middle. Of the two pizzas I definitely preferred this one as it very generous with the tangy goats cheese, which was complemented nicely by the bright sweet and acidic artichokes and tomatoes. Margherita Pizza with crushed San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte, basil, Parmigiano Reggiano D.O.P., extra virgin olive oil: The Margherita is always a good way to judge a pizza. Again the dough was delicious, my only criticism is that I think they probably could have been a little more generous on the tomatoes and fior di latte, but I tend to like my pizzas loaded. Tiramisύ: The table agreed that this was the best dessert of the night. But for me, it was really a hard call to make because I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. This tiramisu was deliciously light, creamy, with the perfect amount of subtle sweetness. A nice source of relief from some of the other sugar bombs at the table. Ontario strawberry budino: Personally, I thought this was incredible. The budino was a creme brulee type custard (without being set or bruleed), topped with a really sweet and sticky strawberry sauce. If I were to critique anything, it would be been that it could have used something crunchy on top (maybe sliced almonds?) to add another dimension of texture, but flavour-wise it was spot on. Brûlée lemon tart with rhubarb compote: Another winner. The lemon flavour was bright and bold, and complemented well by the tangy rhubarb, and the thick bruleed top provided that textural contrast and element of sweet to cut through all that citrus. A delicious early summer dish. Nutella Pizza: While I thought all of the desserts were generously portioned, this one took the cake- or the pizza, I should say. With that same crispy, chewy delicious dough we enjoyed with our main course, we got a full 8" pizza spread with a thick coating of nutella and topped with sliced bananas. It was rich, and decadent but completely addictive. All I would have wanted was a bit more bananas, but I am a banana freak, so that may have been personal preference. If you can believe it, we ate all of all of our desserts, and by the end of it, we were pretty full but satisfied. So, for 1 large platter, 1 app, 4 mains, 4 desserts, 5 cocktails, 1 glass of wine, 1 bottle of wine, the bill was about 350$ including tax and tip. We're always happy to find a spot that's relatively central in location (we seem to always be shlepping out to the west end), so F'Amelia was a nice surprise. I am looking forward to a repeat visit when it's nice enough to enjoy their patio.
