This place is always packed during lunch/dinner whenever I go.
They offer dine-in and take-out options. You can grab BBQ to go
There's fresh BBQ hanging at the front of the window.
There's fresh seafood swimming around in the tanks at the back.
If you're not here to get something to go, you can sit at one of the many (large) round tables. Though, if you are dining on your own or a pair, you may be sharing a table with others. But hey, you're in Chinatown, so just call it the authentic experience. They do have seating for 4 I think, but it looks like they prefer large round tables.
Washrooms are a bit too small in comparison, however, and the way they've set up their floor-plan, if it's a full-house, you need to basically walk all the way around the restaurant to actually reach the washrooms because the tables are so close that there's no space if a bunch of people are sitting around them. But you can't really blame them there's only so much room and they want to maximize capacity.

They have two menus: a green menu, and a red menu. I'm not sure what the difference is but they have different categories and items...So I guess you're looking at a restaurant with over 400 items to choose from.
There's also lists of weekly specials posted.
In addition to all those menus, they also have special menus for
1. Breakfast 8 AM to 11 AM
2. Lunch 11 AM to 3 PM
3. Afternoon Tea 3 PM to 5 PM
Given that they close at 2 AM or 4 AM, I'm wondering if they have a midnight menu.
Given the abundance of cantonese restaurants at dundas/spadina, prices are competitive, portion sizes are pretty big. Even the ones you get from the special menus. You're looking at something like a $6 lunch and it should be enough to fill you up.
Food comes up at a good rate, and while you're waiting, their selection of teas are pretty good to pass the time. Of course, refills included.
All of the dishes I've tried so far were enjoyable.
There was some hints of rancid oil in the flavours for a couple dishes.
I happened to be driving by the House of Gourmet on Sunday morning and decided to head inside. I asked the lady behind the counter for a recommendation and she suggested the Beef Brisket w/ Rice Noodle in Soup ($4.25). I accepted the suggestion and I am very pleased that I did. The broth was very tasty! The noodles were abundant and well-textured. And the brisket was juicy and quite delicious. I was pretty full after eating this $5 bowl of soup and I will definitely return for the same great deal.
House of Gourmet is a name no Chinese person will know if you tell them, but say the name in Chinese and you should get a bunch of grins and head nods. The place itself is identifiable by all the hanging dead animals on the window front. That image alone should entice you to walk in. And then as soon as you glance at the menu, you’ll notice they have close to 500 items!!
a little bit salty. You must drink lots of tea! food supplied in big size! lots of people there. waiter and waitress are very friendly. we three people cost 40 bucks to get a good dinner!
Wow. Years of walking by and never poking my head in all wasted. A great noodle and BBQ place to satisfy any appetite. And the speed, it almost feels wrong that food can be prepared that fast, but hey. Roasted pork w/rice with added veg is a recommended starting point since the two menus can be overwhelming.
The food was well cooked and authentic. We ordered the hot and sour soup, a beef and black bean dish, general Tao chicken, fried noodles, and a duck dish. Food arrived quickly. Service was alright, nothing spectacular.
Super busy all the time, great food, pretty quick service. So many menu items to choose from! I think I get something different every time and it's always amazing!
This is a great place. It is hard to go wrong, and it is very fast. Be prepared to get tossed around in the line waiting for a table, and also be prepared to split a table. But, the noodles, soups, classics and specials are awesome.
I absolutely love the shrimp wonton soup. It has a delicious broth! Otherwise the food is typical oily Chinese fare which hits the spot whether you're drunk or sober.
Fantastic. Very flavourful and fresh extensive menu. Packed but efficient service to match. Great authentic choice.
One of my grandparents' to-go place in Chinatown. I trust my grandparents' to give reliable recommendations on Chinese food. The main reason they like coming here is for the following reasons: food is good for the price (actually amazing since price is so cheap), service is attentive for elder patrons, and the dishes are less salty (lower sodium) than most places in Chinatown. Thus, we frequent this place!
It's a casual HK-style cafe, thus I will stick to dishes generally served at those type of restaurants. I also found the service to be better when I went with my grandparents, it might be because they frown upon my Chinese =/. Also, don't go in ordering sweet and sour pork like one of my classmates, you will be disappointed.
Good, hearty, old-school Cantonese at prices you can't beat! The set menus with either Peking duck or (live fresh!) lobster or crab are ridiculously good value. You can trust all the Chinese seniors that cram the place...they're there for a reason!
Hands down the best Chinese food in the city. You can order just about anything you can think of. Outstanding BBQ, and awesome hot and sour soup, which is hard to come by. They also serve a fried lobster crusted in garlic and salt that is superb. Fair prices and giant portions.
Really good food. One of chinese resturant i like in toronto. Very authetic chinese food.
Pretty good. Ive had noodles, rice, congee and tea time set menus. For the price the food is pretty good. I come back until I find a better place :)
Great and raucous atmosphere, authentic Cantonese cuisine from the street stalls of Hong Kong.
My favourite Chinese restaurant. I've probably come here at least once a week for the last 5 years. The food is very tasty, reasonably priced, and quick to arrive. Definitely a hidden gem... although apparently not so hidden anymore.
Lobster, crab, drool!!!. I've been coming here with my mom and other brave souls (who don't mind staring their food in the eyes) for years. Try the traditional savory ginger & green onion lobster or crab (shells on), with 2 other items on the combo menu, which incl. choice of large family serving soup, and you're good for 3 or 4 people. Like most Chinese restaurants, the illusions fall away at the kitchen, cuz its all about the food. Similarly, you have to dive in there and be prepared to get a bit messy with the shells, brains, livers, and claws... lose your inhibitions... its well worth it.
Amazing Selection. Although we were mildly confused by the two different menus with different numbering systems, the selection here was pretty remarkable (we estimated over 400 items!), and all of the dishes we ordered (6 or 7 of them) were delicious. This will definitely become a regular Chinatown destination for us.
We entered House of Gourmet, and I already loved the place. I loved how there were three boards in English along one side of the wall showing the specials and the other side having some menu options in Chinese up. The second thing that stood out to me, was their sparkly tables! My favourite! I haven't seen anything like it. We ordered, and my sister had Congee and Ginger since she was sick, and I got my delicious bowl of Roast Pork and Rice , and we ordered Rice Noodle Rolls for sides. (They have a pretty damn good name too.) And for the second time around here, was this glorious evening of our spontaneous (or maybe not) dinner out - I was expecting a Cobb Salad for dinner :p! Also, what made me want to come back the
Been going to house of gourmet for 7+ years and by far my favourite Chinatown spot. The menu is huge with a lot of unusual things to try. Service is always great even when they are jam packed. I find a lot of places in Chinatown remind me of Manchu wok while house of gourmet at least seems more authentic.
House of Gourmet is a moderately priced Chinese restaurant located in Chinatown (Toronto, ON). It's actually one of my favorite Chinese restaurants due to their prices, consistency in the service and food, and the portions are filling. I went for dinner with two friends about 2 weeks ago at House of Gourmet as they were craving for some Chinese cuisine. The three of us were promptly seated and given the menus. The menu itself offers a wide variety of different dishes. We ordered off of the combination menu (which was provided alongside the regular menu). The combo meal that we got was a lobster dish with three other dishes for $59.99, which is pretty good. The three additional dishes that we chose were seafood in a bird's nest, ribs, and fried pork chops. The items aren't limited to just those three choices, as there is a list of at least 10 items that you can choose to have along with the lobster dish. The seafood in a bird's nest was nicely presented. Although, I think there was a lot more veggies on the bottom compared to the amounts of seafood that we actually got (on top). Overall, it was a pretty good dish. The ribs were pretty sweet but tender. The only thing that I really didn't like about this dish was the amount of sauce, it was just a little too much. If you like lobsters but don't want to order off the combination menu, there is a special deal where you can get 2 lobsters with ginger & green onion for $26.99. This is one of my favorite dishes at this place, which I always enjoy.
I find House of Gourmet pretty authentic. This restaurant is always busy and the menu is endless. A selection of more than 150 items. And this is the problem. Not everything is good. So you need to be kind of smart or lucky in deciding what to order and I suggest to avoid unusual dishes. I hardly order the same thing, so most of the time I got something that seemed put together without criteria. I would look for pictures of whatever you find intriguing on the menu on internet and then order it. I must say though that their fried rice with coconut sauce was incredible!
