Review Rooster Coffee House - Toronto

Darryl Smart
This is my favorite coffee shop in the entire city. They have the best coffee, right across from Riverdale East park great place to sit and have a picnic. They also sell beer wine and pastries. I go way out of my way just to have this coffee it is so good.

I loved it! The waiter was so patient with me (English is not my first language and I have trouble speaking it sometimes) and she even helped me choosing my beberage. She was so nice! They have great pastries and good coffee, for a good price, and if you order it to take away like I did, you can go and sit in the Riverdale Park and have a nice morning/evening. I totally recommend it!

A cozy coffee shop with a small patio and stunning downtown view. They have a good selection of baked goods from Black Bird. Their coffees are just okay and a bit over priced.

I ordered Mocha large size. It was amazing with a view of riverdale park right in front. The sun was scorching that day as I sat on the patio. The staff was courteous enough to answer my questions. They could have warmed up the croissant easily though.

Cozy coffee shop with high quality coffee and sweet pastries. Always a line but always worth it. Grab a cup and enjoy the view!

Great latte and croissant. Perfect location to relax after a bike ride around the neighborhood.

Delightful baristas, tasty food and sweets for vegans, gluten free and other options. Great atmosphere. Can’t wait to visit in the summer and sit on the patio.

As usual someone crashed into a tram on Broadview and the whole network was down for an hour....so Coffee. Luckily my partner has always loved how "cute" Rooster looked so we checked it out. To my surprise the chocolate mix they use is vegan so i could have my Mocha for $4.50 which honestly needed a lot of help. The seating was fairly uncomfortable and the layout of the place isn't good. I've noticed other Roosters have the same layout and i can't understand the choice to do it that way. My partner loved the tat all over the walls, can't say i agreed. The worst thing however was the music, 90's r'n'b does not belong in a coffee shop or anywhere for that matter. No Wi-fi either. I wasn't expecting much anyway but still...sad.

The Rooster has amazing coffee, and an incredibly friendly and professional staff. I couldn't get through a morning without stopping here first.

Not an easy feat: achieving excellence in both baked goods and coffee. Nice thing about Rooster is that by and large, it sticks to its knitting (recognizing that it must also sell the odd sports drink to achieve higher margins). I have long stopped explaining what a macchiato is...hoping that my order turns out exactly as Rooster makes it: near perfect. Yes, I am picky, but truly this shot comes close to the top ('you know who' is at the summit). Rooster should also hold on tight to its baker. I have not yet experienced a café that knows how to pull a shot and serve scrumptious baked goods. The raisin danish could have been baked in Paris and shipped to me on order...I almost forgot where I was when I took my first bite. I usually don't gush like this, but this visit to Rooster was a rare, doubly pleasant experience. Believe the hype.

Love the vintage theme of the place. The cookie was pretty good but the coffee was mediocre. It wasn't so crowded when we went there, so it was a pleasant stay for me.

One of my fondest memories of toronto was taking a street car to the far west end of the city and back to the complete east side. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon Rooster cafe and boy were we glad! The coffee was fresh and they served us this delicious warm brownie (I wish I could remember what kind it was..) on the house!

I can't wait to head back to Canada just to visit this cafe again. Very niche, simple on the decor, rich on the art, service, and quality of sweet treats.

Rooster Coffeehouse? Always fresh, always busy. Great atmosphere. Not cheap but miles better than the name brands combined. Great view of Riverdale Park. With some effort to separate their nut & nut free snacks, it would easily rate a 5. Until that happens, it's rated 3.5

With a fantastic view of riverdale park, this cafe is exactly what one hopes to find: a great eclectic vibe with raw brick wall, Chrystal chandeliers and compfy leather club chairs. The pastries are fresh and priced to sell. My flat-white was perfect. The staff are fun and energized. If I lived close by this would be my go to cafe. Thanks for a great experience.

Best Latte in TO.. They arguably have the best soy latte in TO. (or anywhere else I've tied so far!) ... and I love the fact that they almost always have some gluten free baked goods, the orange olive oil muffin is to die for!

Coffee House to Crow About. You should first know that I rarely take time to write a review on anything! Next you should know that I have used coffee shops across Toronto and in other cities as my daily virtual office and meeting place for years ... and so I guess I can be considered an expert of sorts. I'm a coffee shop snob. For me to frequent a shop it has to have a combination of attributes to pass the test. It has to be stimulating and draw an interesting mix of clientele from moms with kids to hipsters and students to arty folks and intellectuals and local neighbours. The quality of the coffee of course is primary and vital. Hi-speed internet and power are my drug for my business. Any food should be Fresh! wholesome and delicious ... for goodness sake it isn't that difficult. The staff should have an easy, warm, witty and engaging interaction with customers and each other... an overall positive atmosphere is palpable. I like open bright spaces with communal tables that encourage customer interaction ... I have met many wonderful people who have become close friends as well as business associates that have made my life fuller because of this. I like patios. So all this to say that The Rooster has become my very favourite spot to work and meet people. It marks high on my 'must have' list... I love the coffee, tea, muffins and croissants. The sandwiches are fantastic and the music is usually perfect. Oh yeah and it has the best view in Toronto... the patio is a great place to gaze off and day-dream a bit too. It's a true neighbourhood cafe with New York feel.

Hemingway would like this place. If you've seen the movie "Paris after midnight", you will recognize the ambiance of the Rooster. It is as close to being a 1930's Parisian cafe as we are ever likely to get on our side of the ocean. While I will admit that I am not a real coffee expert, I do claim to be an afficianado of coffee shops - and this is one of the best. The atmosphere is warm and friendly (apparently too friendly for one reviewer below - but to each their own I suppose). I have made The Rooster my local because the coffee, the snacks, the people, the view and the big comfy chairs are all just right.

Response from Rooster Coffee's Shawn. Shawnandrews sent you a message on Urbanspoon:

Milerepa: The past is now past. Thank you for recognizing and acknowledging the incident. I will continue to send friends an acquaintances to Rooster.

Hi Milerepa
My name is Shawn my boyfriend and I own the Rooster. I am so saddened by your two experiences at the shop. I have talked at length with my staff and they are all trying to figure out what happened and how you they could have prevented you leaving the shop with such a bad feeling. I first would like to apologize as the one thing we have always tried to do first and foremost is give people a soft place to land in this city. I am in the shop every day for at least a big part of the time and you are right. coffee gets spilled and often. (most often by us!!) We are so use to this that there is never a reason for us to be upset by this, so i am truly sorry that you left feeling this way. I also know that i may be the culprit when it comes to sayings like "you know the drill"... I can hear myself saying that but it was meant in a warm, treat this as your home, manner. Im sorry it didn't come across that way. I think i use it with people i see often too as a way to make them feel like its their shop in a way.... have always wanted to break the stiffness between the customer and the servers and our goal was to make this an extension of our home.(since it is just next door!; )) In the mornings we have a lot of people that we welcome before we open because of their time restraints and in order for us to keep getting ready for the day we have become comfortable enough to just ask them to grab what they need and to feel at home here. we even have one customer we have shown how to use the espresso machine and he just comes in and makes himself an espresso. I never wanted this to come off as aloof or lazy and I didn't mean any disrespect if it was me that said that. I honestly just wanted people to feel welcome to help themselves as we get organized. I think of this place as a local "club house" where we everyone is welcome and there are no hard edges. I thought we were expressing a casual warmth. Im sorry if it came of as anything else. I have really hired people first on their kindness and light heartedness knowing that we cant teach those skills and then worked on training their coffee skills. I want you to know I have brought both your reviews to the attention of everyone as its not how we ever set out to make anyone feel. There is no one more aware of the support this community gives us than I. I live next door and this is the community that i live in and where all my closest friends reside.I went to Jarvis and at 44...i have not ventured far from my community here! We took a big leap of faith and put all of our heart and soul and life savings into this little shop so we sincerely care. Its not enough for us to say most of the people leave happy.
You said you have spent a lot of money at our place and the one comfort that gives me is the hope that you have had the opportunity to see the kindness and love that we work hard to express on those other occasions. If there is anything i can do to make things better for you please don't hesitate to call me. 416 --- ----. this is my personal cell even though I have a rooster message on it. also my personal and private email is shawn -----------
Sincerely, Shawn.

Milerepa: The past is now past. Thank you for recognizing and acknowledging the incident. I will continue to send friends an acquaintances to Rooster.

-----09 Nov, 2011-----

And it's just up the street from one of the city's oldest houses John Cox house at 469 Broadview ave

-----09 Aug, 2011-----

Enough Waiting in Line. We of the Slow Food Movement have taken it too far.

What should be a simple matter of ordering and getting an espresso in less than 3 minutes has turned into a epic drudge at Rooster. Only one hipster barista taking his sweet time with no sense of urgency to press the button that pumps the water through the grind. The high fives, the chatting, the compulsive-obsessive attention to their music (3 trips the music closet by the barista during my last stint at standing in line), all contribute to an unwanted "lasting" experience. Watching the barista spot a favoured customer or "bro" in line, then walking out for the obligatory hand shake and shoulder bump only adds to the sense that nobody cares how long your order takes.

Now, if it was exceptional coffee, I'd forgive them - to some degree - but it isn't. It's run-of-the-mill mud roasted well-enough by TeAro, not far away, but nothing exceptional. If somehow I received the "God Shot" with every visit, I'd be complaining much less! But such consistency is rare - having only ever gotten a weeks-load of such cuppas from Bull Dog Espresso Bar.

This is my neighbourhood coffee house, God damn it! I shouldn't have to go to the corner of Carlton and Church for a decent pull - without standing in line for ten minutes.

It seems like the lethargic baristas at Rooster Coffee House are trying to convince us that slower is better, that being disinclined to pour steamy water through too few pulls is somehow a prerequisite to improved taste, when in fact, slower is just slower in the same way that poor service is nothing but poor service.

OK. You've got me. I'm already standing in line and the longer i stand the more "vested" I feel and the longer I'm likely to stand, but it's all only temporary. Before long I will just be on my way. Maybe you need another machine and/or barista during rush hour in the morning, I don't know, but you've got to come up with something.

Very diluted matcha latte and almond tea lattes.

Not only is this a comfortable and warm coffee house but it commands on of the best views in and of Toronto.

Warm and fuzzy. I'm surprised no one has reviewed this coffee shop yet- the coffee is delicious and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. I went in for the first time on a Sunday morning and it felt like a family living room haha
Good stuff!

I just ordered their green tea latte, and it wasn't that sweet. I love it... However, this place is small, and it is kind of hard to find a seat. If you are going in the evening, the sun just goes into the coffee house like crazy... Overall, I would go again...

I love that the cookie built my interest as I broke it up piece after piece. I saved the piece that had a candied ginger for last. It was a tiny little thing at the middle of my cookie and it gave the right zing and sweetness that made the perfect ending to me savoring my treat.

A friend of min insisted that I try out Rooster Coffee Hous e since it's one of her fave and where she go all the time since it's near where she works. I am so glad I did, I fell in love with it as soon as I lay eye on it and even more after the first sip of my late (^_^) I will be back quite often and maybe with a book next time ♥♥♥. Look at all the goodies, I just want everything here I end up choosing the Trail Mix Cookie and ♥ it. It was so fresh and yummy. I order a Latte as usual and Ben had a Americano Latte art perfectly done.... given how busy they were, I was surprise at how details and well done the latte art was (^_^) We arrive at around 3:30 and the place was packed, we probably got the last 2 seat It was so good that we had to order a 3rd one to share Cappuccino, love love love... the darker roast is so to my liking =D Verdict: Love Love Love ♥ Great decor, super friendly service, great cookies and coffee w/ great latte art ;) I will be back more often than you

On the Saturday morning when I walked into the Rooster Coffee House, it was packed with locals picking up their morning cup of coffee or sitting around enjoying their drinks chatting with neighbours as they look through the giant windows onto the park wit
