Review Union Social Eatery - Toronto

Rooftop patio is pretty amazing. The place is loud tho I lived here for years before finally trying Union and its very nice and yummy. Its on the mid to pricey range so its good for hanging out with friends and getting a nice meal/drink. Got a salad, nachos, tacos, and cocktails and it was amazing all around.

Pretty par for the course as far as pub/bar-styled food goes. The menu has a few interesting twists here and there that make it stand out like the Almond Crusted Chicken Tenders. Although the price is steep for the food you're getting, if you're ordering something like a burger you can expect to be loaded up with fries that will fill you up. That being said, our server was wonderful and the rooftop patio was a beautiful spot to enjoy the evening. Great place to bring large groups or enjoy something a little more simple and casual!

Was a good dine in experience. Nice place to just chill and not too crowded. Very friendly waitresses. Even brought us a surprise birthday brownie. Loved the garlic shrimp tacos and the fish and chips!

Had a very pleasant lunch - Dani was our server and took very good care of us. The nachos were meh - but the rest of the food was delicious! We had the tuna bowl (in picture) and the almond crusted chicken fingers. Amazing. All washed down with a refreshing Cesar. Excited to return!

Went here on a Friday afternoon sunny so we decided to try out the patio. They weren’t too busy but I felt like there was a lack of attentiveness, it took some time to locate a menu then there was an issue with the order (wrong beer brought) which is ok but I feel like communication amongst the servers weren’t great as we eventually had to flag down another server to get service. Wings not bad however no napkins or cutlery were brought at the same time or prior to so had to wait wings got cold a bit…hopefully it was just an off night but maybe I’ll try this place again for other food and see.

Great ambience- nice place to enjoy each other’s company! Food was so so. We ordered fries, tuna bowl, and the chicken killer sandwiches which sadly didn’t live up to expectations! The chicken wings on the other hand were quite spectacular! The waitress services were decent but I assume things went super slow mostly because it’s a Saturday weekend, a very busy time. Been here before during a weekday where everything was better!!! Ambience 5/5 Response 3/5 Value 3/5 Service 4/5

The staff was very accommodating (I had to take a call the whole time I was there) and super helpful with my order from the start. I had the steak frites and the beef was slightly tougher than desired but I didn’t complain and the manager gave me a discount! The frites were plenty and had the right crunch. Speaking of doing a superb job, Sima, the waitress, was very friendly, attentive, knowledgeable and helped pick out the right wine for my steak. Highly recommend this place if you expect good service while dining in.

Amazing quite, not to busy , Friendly great service, Nice. Lindsay was my server excellent. Deluxe cheese burger with fries. Cooked well. Not to long of a wait. I would recommend to eat here.

Went there for the first time yesterday. We sat upstairs on the most beautiful patio. Service was very quick and the waitress was amazing! They even gave us a free dessert as a welcome to North York, as we shared with them that we had just moved here! The food is to die for. And the menu is so great that it was hard to decide what to order!

I ordered a salad and added tuna which was an extra 9$. I thought that was fine because I figured it would be a substantial amount. My salad came with 3 thin (poorly) sliced tuna pieces on top. I don’t understand how that, being so small, is worth 9$. I couldn’t believe how much of a rip off it was, the place was basically empty around lunch and I couldn’t even get my servers attention. The only reason I’m giving it two stars at least is because I had amazing company with the person I was with.

Very good food at decent price however would like to have a small size of beer offered in a glass such Boston Pizza does to promote responsible drinking. I have seen a few people there drunk to the point that the can't walk properly on last leafs game night.

Went there for the first time this week. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the great weather that night. Great place to be on a hot night. We tried 3 appetizers instead of ordering an entree and they were all delicious. They have specials on beer every night All in all great place and it sure helps when you have beautiful waitresses serving you.

I have to say this was one of the best places, for lunch that I have had in a very long time. Our waitress gave is some of the vest dishes to try and explained them so well. Thank you for an amazing experience.

What a fabulous spot for gluten free. The menu is awesome. The food was very tasty. Servers were a bit too busy but friendly. The ambiance is something we need in the North end. Even my kids thought we were downtown. :)

Whether it’s rooftop drinks and snacks, or dinner with the family, I love this place every time! The service tonight was amazing and the food....

Lots of options on the menu...food was really good. Interesting libations. Not run of the mill. Jasmine was great! Very attentive. Food served all at once even though we were a large group. We would go again!

Food, Service & Atmosphere were 10/10. I had the fish (Haddock) & chips (hand cut fries). Came piping hot & crispy. Mmmm so good. Our server was excellent! It’s definitely my new go to restaurant.

This is one of my favorite spots at Yonge Street to grab a quick bite along with a cold one.
Usually order the chicken strips, nachos and chicken vindaloo out here.
Staff gives exceptional service and are really attentive to our needs.
Recommended.

Pasta- no taste at all. All the fries being served looked soggy. Need more taste. Pasta was dull. No flavour nothing special. Calamari was okay. Nachos was ok as well. Nothing amazing.

The food here is great - my favourite is the BBQ short rib poutine - rich gravy, topped with meat and onion rings. Absolutely delicious. My friend and I split appetizers between us since we didn't find any of the entree items too appealing or unique. We tried the poutine, the taquitos and the chicken wings. The wings were OK - you only have 2 options (buffalo butter or carolina BBQ - we went with buffalo butter and it was meh). The taquitos are nice - stuffed with meat and cheese and deep fried. Although the food is fantastic, I found the service to be questionable. When we first arrived, the place was not busy at all, and we were told it would be a 30 minute wait. We left our number with the hostess and she called promptly, but we are unsure as to why we had to wait, even though there were tables obviously available, none of them seemed to be reserved, and the whole time we sat eating when we finally got a table, the place was half empty. Not sure if this is a place trying to act more high class than it actually is. The food is good, but I probably won't return.

Beer was cool but not cold and holy smoke burger was over cooked . Huge helping if fries which was very nice but probably not healthy ;) Apart from that the service was good and we got a good table on the patio. Very much like jack Astros down the road. Good and I will be back.

I frequent this location a lot. The service is fast and friendly. The food is good. I usually order either the Epic Cheeseburger or the Almond crusted chicken strips. I recommend trying the buffalo butter sauce as a replacement for the regular dipping sauces that comes with the chicken strips. The overall decor is great but I find that it can get extremely loud on weekends. This location also has an excellent rooftop patio. Although the menus are the same I find the Mississauga location produces a better tasting food. For dessert I recommend the cheese cake!

Everyone was curious about what exactly the House Braised Short Rib Firecrackers were. It turned out to be extremely delicious and I wish I had more! These were assembled to look like ‘firecrackers’ on the outside — the ones you pull and they crack. It had jalapeño-Montrery Jack, cream cheese, grilled Bermuda onions, cremini mushrooms, with a sweet chili sauce on the side. It was basically cheese, onions, and mushrooms all wrapped up together in a firecracker shape which was absolutely delicious. The jalapeño-Montrery Jack cheese and cream cheese were so delicious. I’m a huge cheese fan so this absolutely fit the bill. Yum! Like I said, I would definitely recommend these and order them again.

Good place. Patio is indeed nice. You can have full view of Yonge street. Menu is good being veggie and non alcoholic I always had less choices. But the waitress was helpful enough for suggesting items. Salad was awesome full rates for that but burger and flatbread was so so. I have had really good veggie burger before so Ivan say this was not that great. Overall good place to sit and chit chat

The space is quite spacious though it was quite empty of a Thursday evening. On the menu is what you would expect from a jack astors.

I had the killer chicken sandwich. I believe this changes monthly. The one i had was cajun grilled chicken with avocado, cheddar, etc. It was good but quite messy to eat. It came with a generous portion of fries which i enjoyed.

An average place to hangout. We'd been here for the Basketball finals - very average experience. Food was ok ok and drinks were not very relishing esp. my margarita. Would not suggest this place for an eatery for sure!

On Saturday we had an opportunity to try Union Social Eatery at dinner time. We had been to their Mississauga location before and liked it. Decor and menu are the same, but the music and general level of noise seemed to be louder here.

The server was pleasant, attentive and efficient, so no problems there, and to some extent offset the noise issue; we didn't have to be in the restaurant longer than necessary. :)

SWMBO chose the Blackened Chicken. Tender chicken with a mild seasoning, in an Alfredo sauce. I had the Chicken Vindaloo, which had just the right amount of heat for me. I'm not sure if the made the naan in house, but it sure tasted fresh.

I heard good reviews about Union Social Eatery in Mississauga so I was delighted when it opened in North York replacing Estrella Taqueria (did people really go there?)

We were seated in the middle of the restaurant watching a Jays game. It was a spacious location and there were some quieter seats at the back or along the side.

Food & drinks:

While waiting for friends to arrive, I ordered a Parmesan Truffle Fries and it was delicious. The fries were crunchy, not overly salty, but I wish the Parmesan cheese would melt a little like a poutine.

Pornstar Martini - Taste was good but it was only filled up to 1/2 of the glass. Looked kind of small to me.

The Rotating Craft Tap changes once a month. Not as often as places like Local Eatery where they have 6 or 7 beers on tap.

Blacken Chicken Capelini - Don't compare it to your Italian nonna-handmade pasta but it did the job. The sauce was very creamy and the pasta was good. The chicken was pretty tender and I like the mix of grape tomatoe and spinach in my pasta. The portion was quite generous.

Steak Frites - The angus steak was medium rare and pretty juicy.

Instead of hand-cut fries, you have a choice of subbing dragon roll, salmon roll, truffle fries, cheddar poutin, or add gravy for extra.

Service:

I found the service was awesome. Our waitress offered suggestions to the mains we were ordering and she kept coming back to see how we were doing. One of my friends wasn't exactly happy about her martinis and the salmon roll upgrade for her main. They took care of her concerns after she talked to our server. They are quite willing to make sure their customers are satisfied.

I came here with a party of four on a Tuesday night. It wasn't overly crowded and we were able to secure a booth seating. There is a bar in the middle with dining seating around it on the lower floor. They also have an upstairs dining area with a rooftop patio. Their special drink of the night was $5 Sapporo pints. Three of us jumped on this deal right away. They also gave us chips and tortilla wraps with three different kinds of dip on the house. That was a really nice gesture I thought. After careful deliberation, we ordered the House Braised Short Ribs Firecracker as an appetizer. It's shredded ribs with mozzarella wrapped in a deep fried dumpling wrapper. It came with a spicy dipping sauce. This was really good and original I thought. For my entree, I ordered their Fish and Chips. The hostess mentioned there were two pieces of fish, however when it arrived there was just one single piece. I was a little disappointed but did not complain. The fish was crispy and came with a wasabi based dipping sauce. It was very nicely done, however the fish could have a bit more taste to it. The others in our party ordered the Ceast and Desist Burger (Very good and large), Chicken Rose Penne (Good but small), and Tenderjack Steak Sandwich (Steak was overcooked not medium rare as ordered). It was a comfortable setting but wish the food was slightly better to match its decor. Their Truffles fries are highly recommended as there is a hint of rosemary with parmesan cheese sprinkled on top.

Gumbo suggested we try this relatively new place in the busy Yonge & Sheppard area. The place was not very busy, but it was a weekday evening so no surprise there. There were four of us dining. Both our servers (one in training) were very attentive and friendly. We were surprised with a complimentary appetizer consisting of hummus, black olive tapenade, and sun-dried tomato with feta, the last being the best. The short rib firecrackers were good too, but could benefit from more meat and less cheese. Sapporo beer pints were on tap for $5.
For the mains, everyone was satisfied but not necessarily blown away. My steak sandwich was overcooked (ask for two steps more raw than you usually have) and they missed my parmesan truffle fries. To their credit this was quickly rectified. Justins burger was absolutely massive, and while super juicy, he didn't like the special USE sauce. Gumbo didn't think his fish and chips was especially good.
Most impressive was the fact that Jeff L. finished all the fries, from all four mains. Quite an accomplishment.
Bottom line is that Union Social is a solid average but could and should do much better, especially in the very competitive North York area.
My eyes light up when a new restaurant opens in my neighbourhood. While there’s plenty of Asian fare in North York, Western cuisine is harder to come by, especially brunch. I usually make the trek down to St. Clair or Dupont when the need for waffles or hollandaise sauce kicks in. Thus, I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into the brunch menu at the newly opened Union Social Eatery.

Their comfort food heavy menu is reasonably priced with no dish over $20. The crispy buffalo chicken tacos are a steal at $9.98 for three; they’re also packed with flavour from cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, a gorgonzola ranch sauce and salsa.

After eating here at lunch and dinner, I found the atmosphere similar to the Jack Astor’s down the street and the food quality slightly higher. Perhaps they were experiencing issues in the kitchen during opening month, but my first lunch visit was a tad slow to meet a corporate crowd’s dining needs.

Since my husband and I had the day off, we weren’t in a rush; but three tables in our vicinity were asking about the status of their dishes. The meal took about one and half hours, which is not outrageous but could be improved for a table of two. My advice: develop a lunch menu incorporating easy to execute dishes to help speed up lunch service.

My husband had the grilled fish tacos ($11.98), which weren’t as substantial as the buffalo chicken version - the small fish pieces became lost in the napa slaw. But, the kick from the wasabi sauce was a nice change against the typical chipotle mayo.

The U.F.O. burger ($11.96) appeared to be a popular lunch choice. The freshly made beef patty could be cooked less to allow it to be juicier. Nonetheless, it was a decent size and

I have been here twice since they opened and have had two different experiences. Both times I ordered the same item (big smoke burger). The first visit the burger was perfectly cooked and juicy. The second visit the burger was overcooked and quite dry. The patio is nice, but I probably won't return. The burgers are really the only menu item that appeals to me and I don't want to waste another $20 on dry brick.

The Union Eatery recently opened up near the Yonge & Sheppard area. I have dined at the location in Mississauga before, so was glad that they expanded to North York. In my first visit, I ordered the grilled fish burger, which was… not good at all. Maybe because I was expecting a fried fish fillet, but grilled fish does NOT go well in a burger bun. I barely touched the dish and even after taking it home, had to throw it out eventually.

I went to Union Social on friday night and got the last open table. I ordered the nachito with ancho chicken which was pretty tasty but would have liked a bit more pico with it. My friend ordered the almond crusted chicken fingers and fries. He ate very bit of it. I tasted the chicken and it was really good. My other friend ordered the short rib poutine. It kind of looked like a mushy mess but the flavour f it was good but he couldn't f finish it. After a few failed restaurants in that location it was nice to see it full. Lets hope it stays consistent or gets even better.

It often only takes one meal to decide if you want to return to an establishment...and the Candy House Salad with Salmon I was served today at lunch has deterred me from visiting again.* I can't believe it cost almost $20 for this huge disappointment. For an entrée salad, the portion was more like a side. Was I paying for the fresh figs? I can't even tell you if the figs elevated the dish, as the salad was overpowered by too much dressing. The maple-pommery vinaigrette was NOT what I classify as a vinaigrette. It was thick, creamy and super-salty -- reminiscent of those cheap pre-made dressings found in the grocery aisle.

After several hours and glasses of water, I can still taste the salt. Translation: not a good thing. They do have a lovely rooftop patio, so I may consider going back for that....but for drinks only...

*(unless my boss picks this place for a team lunch again)
