This is an exceptional gem in the heart of Etobicoke. I have travelled extensively for business and can say that this restaurant is on par with some of the best that North America has to offer. It is a great value given the exceptional talents of the chef.
Excellent Asian Fusian with a twist. There is a South American flavour mixed in to several dishes. The food quality is very high. This is a hidden gem right in the neighbourhood.
Interesting fusion. An interesting little place - chosen by my Event Planner girlfriend who always seems to take us to spots that she hears lots of buzz about.
It's a small-ish space that's not sure if it's a Mexican, Asian, Argentinian or Caribbean...but that seems to be part of its charm. The Chef himself came out to explain our dishes and he made our Mango margaritas, which were yummy!
We went on a Thursday evening and we were the only people in the place by the time we finished - it felt like a private party.
We ordered edamame and fried calamari appetizers to share and between the 7 of us ladies, we ordered fish tacos (one fried and one grilled), jerk fish (gorgeous and so tasty!) and an Asian noodle dish.
All of our food was really very tasty. Service was friendly and we spent about $40 each, (which covered drinks, apps, main, tip and tax). Pretty affordable. There is free parking in the back and street parking on Dundas is free after 4pm.
I recommend you make a reservation to let them know you are coming and that they are prepared for your arrival! We received good service because we were the only table there - but I hate to think what would have happened if more folks came in.
All in all - a delicious, fresh and pleasant experience!
Stumbled onto this place with my friends. The food was awesome. The chef came from the kitchen and brought us our dessert. We will be going back for sure
Lunch in the Village of Islington - Felt like downtown Toronto. A quick business lunch today, turned into a wonderful downtown restaurant experience. Great friendly service, amazing fresh, as fresh can be, food, and all at a very good price. I highly recommend this hidden gem in the heart of Etobicoke, in the Village of Islington. Here's the added bonus, ART...we enjoyed many of amazing murals along our quick walk along Dundas St.
We will be back for more!. It is a tapas type place with both Thai and some Latin inspired dishes. We tried the crispy calamari and the salad rolls with shrimp and mango for starters. Both disappeared very quickly. Next we had the Yellow Curry Shrimp dish and the Argentinian Steak and frites ........GONE
We went before 8 on a Friday night, plenty of seats and service and food were both quick and good.
Wish I had taken pictures, the dishes were very nicely presented as well. Definitely going back.
Read about this gem and decided to check it out.
It's great to have free parking around the back as the Dundas/ Burnamthorpe area is not great for that. Entering from the back is a little off-putting as iyou wonder what you are going into, but once through the door you're greeted by a well lit and nicely designed interior. The waitress was very amiable and helpful and we ordered the edame and ceviche to start. Both were wonderful and we were eager to taste the steak and fish tacos. The steak came with a chipotle aioli and chimichurri . Cooked medium rare and presented on a bed of tasty fries and topped with fried onion strings The portions are large enough for three to share and sharing dishes with each other is the focus of this restaurant.
The fish tacos were well presented and delicious. However, one suggestion for the chef is to think about using sustainably caught fish.
We also ordered the chilli chicken which we found to be a little bland for our taste, but next time we'll just ask for a bit more chilli:-)
For desert The three of us shared the sponge with three types of cream. Amazingly light and truly melt in the mouth sinfully sweet.
We were surprised that there were not more people at the restaurant and maybe it's because it's off the beaten track for many. It's certainly a great gem and well worth visiting. We will definitely be back. We give Mai Bistro a huge thumbs up
Very good. We had the chili edamame, curry lamb spring rolls, crispy calamari, and my absolute favorite potato dumplings in red wine sauce and shaved parm cheese. It was nice. They were kind. It was clean. And the Chef came out to tell us the specials and then came out after to chat with me. Fantastic. We will be back
I absolutely love the food here! Always consistent, enjoyable and delicious! It's such a pleasant experience every time! Everything on their menu is authentic, super fresh and full of flavour. Without a doubt, you will not be disappointed!
From their sauces to their hand cut fries and homemade desserts, I love how everything is made from scratch and with such passion. All their dishes are creative and perfectly balanced. I like that they offer specials to keep things interesting. If you're lucky, the chef will come out to say hello.
Here are some dishes I highly recommend:
Small Tapas:
- Grilled/Fried Calamari
- Grilled Portebella
- Karaage
- Mai Hand Cut Fries
- Shrimp Ceviche
- Green Mango Salad
- Grilled Thai Beef Salad
Large Tapas
- Grilled Argentina Steak
- Grilled Lemongrass Pork
- Grilled Fish Tacos
You definitely don't want to leave without trying their dessert so be sure to save some room and thank me later! They have 2 options: Tres Leches and Japanese Cheesecake. Both are so velvety, satisfying and irresistibly good; also made in house. Can't go wrong with either or! 🍰
We were anticipating our visit to Mai Bistro for a while and we were not disappointed. Cozy atmosphere, nice decor and an unobstructed view of the wonderfully creative chef and kitchen. The tapas we tried were presented beautifully and tasted fantastic. We had the chipotle Tiger shrimp and the grilled steak tacos as a main course and they were delicious. We finished off the meal with a light and fluffy Japanese Cheesecake which was perfect. We will return.
It has been a while since I went to Mai Bistro because of the pandemic but I remember how much I enjoyed their steak. My friend and I decided to have dinner at this restaurant. To start with, we had grilled portabello mushroom with goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes served with green salad with ginger dressing. For the main course we ordered Grilled Argentina style steak, chimichurri butter and hand cut fries. I asked if it is possible to substitute fries with green salad and my request was nicely accommodated. The steak was so flavourful, seasoned well, tender and cooked to perfection. The chimichurri added to the steak just made it more delightful to the palate. The hand fries was so good and not oily my friend finished them. The dressing of the green salad was so light and tasted so good. For dessert we had tres leches cake topped with whipped cream and pomegranate. It was soft, moist, not so sweet and so delicious. The staff, Rachel provided excellent customer service. The restaurant is clean, the fork and knife wrapped in fabric napkins which I seldom see in small restaurants. Mai Bistro serves food so tasteful that we will surely go back to this restaurant to try other menus. The Chef does an amazing job doing Asian food with Latin flavour, such excellent fusion cuisine.
Update: We just keep going back to this place. This time they had the special of Salmon Ceviche which was a heavenly delight. The salmon was so fresh, salted and marinated in citrus juice and served over crispy fish cracker. I had it with Watermelon Margarita which made for a perfect pairing.
Yummy, fantastic food presentation and reasonably priced. We stayed with our restless toddler at the patio and they helped him settle down with complimentary rice and hugs! We had shrimp ceviche, grilled fish tacos, green mango salad, medium rare beef salad & tres leches cake. All for under $70.
Highly recommended.
Amazing food, and some of the best service I've experienced. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves for a family gathering, and were able to taste all the amazing food through a buffet style.
This place is beyond amazing. Perfect latin asian fusion cuisine. I can really feel the passion of the chef putting into his food. I was so surprised with the warm peaches in red wine served with mango ice cream. It’s definitely the best 5 star dessert that I’ve ever had. I still remember how good the juicy peaches were in my mouth. It would be such a pity if we decided to skip the dessert.
Polite staffs and cozy atmosphere suitable for a romantic date night. Mai bistro is the hidden gem!
Thank you Mai Bistro for catering our event yesterday, at our agency office here in the Village of Islington. The food was absolutely delicious, everyone raved about it. My favourite was the steak skewers! Thank you Chef Manh!
