Amazing place with an amazing food. Their French Fries are the best I have had in my whole life and love the hospitality extended by the staff. We tried out Jerk chicken pasta and chicken avocado grilled sandwich, it was just out of the world. It is like a home away from home ambiance and everything was just superb
Great neighbourhood gem. Really friendly owners and staff. The food is varied but tends to be Jamaican-influenced. Love the fried chicken for brunch. Be sure to ask for the house hot sauce: it's the chef's family recipe that will knock your socks off.
Good food, great value. First time here, will definitely return. Friendly staff. Excellent coffee. Kids had hot chocolate, a nice treat.
You feel like you're walking into someone's home, we were greeted warmly and staff was very friendly. Went for brunch and had the chicken and waffles and they were really delicious and I can't wait to go back and try some of their other dishes.
Amazingly friendly service! They'll take song requests, which is quite sweet.
Kim recommended the Oxtail to me. I'd never had oxtail before, and was hesitant. But I gave it a go and was NOT disappointed. :)
Omg, I have to go back to this place & sample more items! We had the chicken & waffles, Amazin! I am not sure how this place didn't get rated top spot in the city for its chicken & waffles!! The place seemed to get a lot of traffic from regulars & everything people were ordering all around us looked good! So, I definitely recommend this place & can't wait to revisit myself.
Under the Table is the perfect name because the restaurant itself is hidden under another restaurant. The place looks like a small diner from the Prohibition days. The decor is pretty old but inviting and warm.
The menu is pretty out there. They don't seem to specialize in anything and mainly focus on what the chef wants to do. I ordered the jerk chicken meal, which is around $10 so it's pretty cheap as well. The jerk chicken was very tender and moist. The jerk sauce wasn't overly spicy, but I had requested it to only be medium anyways. The chicken portion was good and the was cooked well. It comes on a bed of rice with a salad as well, but the chicken is the real winner of the dish.
Our server was fantastic. She really brought the experience up because she sat down and chatted with us and almost made it seem as though we were friends at her place having dinner. I do a great disservice by forgetting her name and apologize deeply for it. Definitely a must visit add they also have different specials everyday.
Me and my friends tried their chicken and waffles yesterday. We didnt notice that they only do it for brunch, but we were getting 5 orders amd they made it for us. Holy s***, it was amazing! Will be going back, for sure!
It’s not news that I love Under the Table (UTT). I am obsessed with their jerk chicken meal, their chicken and waffles (my namesake fyi!), their garlic mash, their wings…oh God those wings & that dip! And the list goes on. So when I need to plan an event, albeit a birthday celebration, holiday party, or I just want to have a delicious meal with friends, I take them all to UTT – great portions, great value and delicious food. Do I need to say more? I have had many private parties at UTT, and they have all been received with rave reviews! In fact, many of my friends and their families are now regulars. There is almost no point in asking them where they had brunch over the weekend. The answer is ALWAYS the same!! “I went o UTT!”
I have just discovered this gem. The service is excellent and the food is awesome. I have enjoyed their brunch options on the weekend - smoked salmon eggs benny and frittata. I have also enjoyed their dinner options such as oxtail dinner, jerk chicken dinner, jerk chicken poutine, "savoury meets mozza" appetizer, and chef wings. The owner (Kim) and chef (Betty) clearly appreciate their customers and will seemingly go to no end to provide a pleasant experience.
Amazing food, amazing environment. Wow it has been twice we go to this place and everybody is super nice always, they make u feel like part of the family, and the food, wow is sooooo good and the portions are super generous, we keep telling all our friends about it. You must try this place.
Brunch. My partner and i stopped in here on our way out of toronto and fell in love! the staff and atmosphere were wonderful, but the food was of course the star. my partner got the chicken and waffles with maple dijon bacon, and i the sunday special of eggs benedict on avocado and smoked salmon. we were both scraping our plates for more, and at unbeatable prices! we plan on coming here every time we frequent toronto.
Awesome food & great customer service. We enjoyed everything! The chicken soup (just like mom makes), the perogies, the prime rib sandwich and the steak dinner (the most tender & tasty steak EVER). Friendly & attentive customer service was bar none! Hats off to the owners who go above and beyond.
Comfort food I didn't know I needed. Good food. Great prices. Even better service.
This is the kind of restaurant you could go to on a weekly basis and never get tired of. I think this is why they have regulars for karaoke night (a bunch of fun people, btw).
Ordered app sized wings, which came out perfectly crispy and smothered in this tangy barbecue sauce with a good kick to it. The perogies are homemade and unfortunately were not on the menu, otherwise, we would have ate that too. The jerk chicken was white meat, but so tender and flavourful. The level of spiciness was great because it didn't burn my mouth off. The ackee and saltfish came with these buttery dumplings that were out of this world. The oxtail was like this stew, rich in beefy flavour, perfect for mixing with rice. My personal favourite was the daily special of chicken and dumplings. I would have probably preferred thigh meat to drumsticks in the chicken and dumplings, but that's probably a personal thing. The highlight of the dish, again, was the rosemary dumplings. The sauce on top of the dish was so very flavourful and something I could eat for a week straight.
I think the one thing that was a bit disappointing was the seafood pasta. There were generous portions of fish, shrimp and even live mussels, but the flavour was not very complex. It was touted as a cajun cream sauce, but nothing about it really screamed "cajun" to me. I believe this would be a great dish for someone in a party that really doesn't like Jamaican food and wants something a bit more standard Canadian fare.
We also ordered the funnel cake, which for $6, could have easily served 4-6 people depending on how hungry people still are. It came with three larges piece of fried dough, topped with a caramel sauce, ice cream and fresh berries. It's not quite your traditional funnel cake, but I think it's better. The dough was a bit chewy on the inside and very very crispy on the edges. Think of a Beavertail dough, only crispier.
I cannot emphasize how good the food was. You could tell that it's all homemade. This isn't your fancy fine dining place. It doesn't try to be more than it is. Although the combination of jerk chicken and grilled steak on the same menu can seem a bit confusing at first, but everything we ordered was delicious. I will be dreaming of those dumpings for a while.
Fantastic Experience. Went here for a friend's birthday. Food was great, very affordable. Service was extremely friendly. I got the trio plate and the oxtail was my favorite. Will definitely come again!
Stumbled upon here by accident and I was so impressed. Very tasty food and possibly the most friendly staff ever. Would recommend! Fast tasty and a decent price.
The soup came first and it was a robust medley of flavours of red beans, potatoes, spices and spring onions. I was glad I only have half as I know I could not finish one whole bowl on my own if I still were to eat the ackee and salted fish. The soup was hearty and have a spicy after notes. It certainly whetted the appetite. A few minutes later, Kim came back with the two main big plates. The portions were generous. Curious about ackee, I tried it right away and it has a spongy, slippery texture. The ackee mixed with the minced salted fish was piled on top of flavoured rice. I don’t think I would have enjoyed it if it were not rice. I am Filipino after all. LOL. I would have eaten a full bowl of the ackee/saltfish combo if they would let me. It was rather addicting.
Great visit here with a group of friends. Not really a place for those of us who need to be gluten free, but the owner and chef are so great and will work something out for you. It has an amazing neighborhood feel to it - you just know that half the customers are known by name.
The jerk chicken I had was delicious - moist with a crunch spicy exterior. While the desserts are amazing they are also very gluteny - but again they didn't leave me out in the cold but made up a lovely bowl of fruit & berries topped with ice cream.

This is probably the best restaurant on Parliament street. You feel kinda home as the place is cozy and well located on a very lively and classy street. The food is really great since a combination of carribean and canadian tastes. And above all Kim .the owner, is fantastic .
Reviews for both dinner and brunch:
DINNER
Under The Table Restaurant is a casual comfort food restaurant located on Parliament St, near Wellesley street in the Cabbagetown area of Downtown Toronto. Unfortunately they do not have a website, so I spent a lot of time online trying to get more information on them, but the few pieces on them that I did find, was very positive. AND they have jerk chicken on the menu– I LOVE jerk chicken!!! So I gave them a call and made a reservation.
On the evening of my reservation, I did have a bit of hard time finding the restaurant because it is located in a basement. But then again, I always forget to follow street numbers, so getting lost was on me. Once inside, I was greeted by Kim, a very cool and friendly hostess who got our dinner started on a positive note with her cool appeal. So let me summarize for you my experience…
The Good:
1) All mains are under $20! My dinner specifically was under $12! Oh yeah!
2) We got these yummy seasoned fried bread sticks with dip on the house as soon as we arrived. Free food—love it!
3) They were very accommodating with my hatred of onions. I got no onions on my jerk chicken (see the bill picture!)
4) There was a 10% off deal if you checked in on Yelp. Several of my guests do not use Yelp, yet Kim gave every one of my guests the 10% discount.
5) The service was very efficient. Although the restaurant was packed, and Kim was the only one working, we got our food very quickly.
6) And last, but not least, the food was delicious!
The Not So Good:
1) Their beer options are not great. A lot of North American beers in a bottle. They need to incorporate more European options.
2) I lost internet connection. I missed many messages because there was no signal.
So really, the negative issues were quite minor and they certainly will not keep me from returning. Great tasting food; affordable prices; good portion sizes and great service? Sold! Under The Table Restaurant has gone into, “must return SOON!” list.
BRUNCH
I visited Under the Table Restaurant for dinner and loved the food and experience (click here for the review). There was something so special about my dining experience that I immediately made a reservation for a Saturday morning so that my guests and I could try their brunch offerings. I was feeling brave when I contacted Kim (one of the owners) that I felt okay to ask if they could make chicken and waffles for us (chicken and waffles is not on their menu). I am a huge fan of chicken and waffles, but I have had a hard time finding a worthy one in the city (I generally get my fill when I visit NYC as I normally stay in the Harlem area and they know how to make great chicken and waffles—though someone from South Carolina once told me that in the South they don’t even know what the hell a waffle maker is!) Nevertheless….
We arrived at Under the Table for our 11am reservation and Kim had already sectioned off an area for us. There were 17 of us and we took up 85% of the restaurant (yes, we did have a reservation for this amount of people). The fact that they were willing to accommodate us was amazing.
I did have a moment of panic when I sat down and realized that I did not check-in with the restaurant about whether everything was still a go. I had been selling this whole, “you are going to get the best chicken and waffles EVER” idea to my guests that it suddenly dawned on me… “shit! What if they forgot about my request? What if they have no chicken? Or a fyer? Or oil? Or flour? Or…..” But my fears were quickly abated when Kim told me that they had chicken and waffles for us. Whew!
Honestly, I was only expecting fried chicken on a waffle. Simple fried chicken, on a waffle. Nothing more. But HOLY SHIT! My mind was BLOWN! The chef did not come up with just 1 type of chicken and waffles, or 2, but 3! She wanted us to have OPTIONS! Huh? Unfuckingbelieaveable! When you hear something like this you want to give them a pass. Like, “as long-as-my-chicken-is-not-raw-in-the-middle-I-will-love-it-because-you-are-too-damn-nice-to-not-love-what-you-made-me” kinda scenario. But NO! The 3 options were DELICIOUS! ALL 3! Ok, I apologize for the caps, but I feel like I need to make a point here. ALL THREE WERE FANTASTIC!
The 3 options were (I apologize, but I cannot remember the exact sauces/syrup—there were different sauces/syrups for each one):
Fried chicken and waffles with bacon
Fried chicken and waffles with berries
Jerk chicken and waffles
And the waffles? Imagine a waffle and a funnel cake having a baby. Their child is what you got. Oh so good…..
I know some of you are probably thinking that I am just a nice reviewer and would say nice things about any meal I had. HELL NO! I am not easy to impress (read my reviews if you don’t believe me). But when I find an establishment worthy of praise, I give it. Under the Table is not only special for the way they try to make every patron feel at home and cared for. But also because their food is delicious, and unpretentious.
Below are pictures of our meal. Under the Table has a full brunch menu, and a few of my guests ordered items from the regular menu. I did not have a single complaint from my guests.
Recommended by a friend to come. The space is small and quaint. On Fridays, there's karaoke with guests busting out some classic songs. :)
The food is delicious and decently priced! I would recommend the jerk chicken poutine or the oxtail dinner or the prime rib! All are worthy of being delicious comfort food. :)
I didn't know what to expect from this place as I was invited for a birthday. I absolutely recommend it! it's super cozy and the food was incredibly good. I got jerck chiken and rice and the funnel cake with fresh strawberry on it. Service was excellent too!!
Besides having the kindest waitresses ever, Under the Table also has an absolutely fantastic brunch menu. I ordered the Eggs Benedict, and the entire meal was full of flavor. There was a good amount of salmon, and it was smoked perfectly. The best part of my experience, however, wasn't an item that I got, but instead what my friend ordered. I tried his pancakes and was completely blown away. I don't know what magic the chef used, but I normally think pancakes are gross, flavorless pieces of dough that require syrup to even get down. These pancakes were amazing though. I ate an entire one without even needing to use syrup. I dream about these pancakes now. I'm definitely coming back just to order an entire plate for myself. Besides the pancakes, I enjoyed my rolo hot cocoa and my vegetarian grandma loved her fruit topped French toast and tasty coffee. Overall, this brunch was perfect.
On weekends there is a $5 special which comes with two eggs, choice of bacon or sausage, home fries, and bread (choice of Rye, egg, or multi grain). The egg bread is delicious!!!!
Also go the salmon and avocado benedict which is delicious. Comes with home fries but no bread (I guess u get the English muffin).
The waitress got our order mixed up w another table but they were quick to fix the mistake. Food comes out about average time (other than the mess up of our order).
There's restaurant parking but there is street parking Parliament. Probably free before 1pm on Sundays. Perfect for brunch :) The wifi doesn't work.
The best jerk chicken that I have had in Toronto. The chicken was so moist and tender and the marinade was the perfect level of spicy.
Pretty chill environment. Food was pretty good loved their homemade pepper sauce.
Had the oxtail...pretty good portion size.
Went there cause we read great review and craving steak and was not disappointed. Kim was amazing, very personable. The food was delicious. We ordered the 10oz rib eye and the seafood plate. Both dishes were cooked to our satisfaction and it tasted great! Highly recommend this hidden gem and will definitely go back.
It's hard to believe this little gem has so few Google reviews.
Fantastic food. Fantastic service. I'm reluctant to gush too much about this place because you'll think me a shill. Please, try it out. There's not a single meal I've had there that wasn't fantastic.
Oh, and if you're a vegetarian, they'll lovingly craft a custom-built meal for you, perfectly matched to your diet requirements.
You will feel the love. You will taste the love. You will fall in love. You will tell all your friends about this fantastic restaurant you've found.
Enjoy!
