The food was excellent. We went for lunch and had the cabbage rolls- exceptionally dense and flavourful. The cutlets and sandwiches were awesome as wel lwill definitely go back. .
Last meal in Toronto. I decided to try something new in the area and found Budapest Restaurant, a Hungarian spot that specializes in schnitzels.
I dropped in for a late Thursday lunch (around 1:45pm). Surprisingly, the place had a few customers. The inside looks newly renovated and there's two main dining areas. My server was very genuine and checked up on me several times throughout the meal. Just ask her what's good! I stuck with the Hungarian dishes.
The menu is split into appetizers, entrees, breakfast, omelettes, sandwiches, burgers and desserts. Seriously, wished I came with someone else to try more things. All the desserts sounded heavenly.
- Bread - you get two slices of bread complimentary. Comes with butter. Nothing to write home about.
- Beet salad ($3.00) - a side bowl of fresh, sweet shredded beets. Not to mention more than enough for one person.
- Wiener schnitzel ($15.95) - traditionally breaded pork cutlet, fried golden. It comes with a choice of rice, home fries, dumplings or mashed potatoes; I went with the dumplings. Fantastic! It also came with pickled cabbage. The schnitzel was hammered to a perfect, lean consistency. Breading was spot on; crunchy but pleasantly light. The piece was massive but somehow I ate it all!
It's a tad expensive for lunch but the quality is there. Homey, old school, traditional Hungarian food.
Hidden away around the corner sits this gem. Magda our server remembers me from several yrs ago when she was at another Hungarian restaurant which we still frequent, but only b/c I had no idea this place existed!
Food here is top notch and the service was fast and friendly! AND they deliver!!
Cordon bleu was unbelievable with a chicken gravy that you’d drink right from the boat. Spicy mushroom stew was tasty and filling. Beets, cucumber salad all very nice.
Didn’t do any sweets but I suspect they know what they’re doing there...
WTF is the rating 2.9 when all the reviews give it a 4+?
Cozy little place with a casual and homey atmosphere. Excellent schnitzel, generous portions, and a good variety of home-cooked Hungarian fare. Service is fast and pleasant. Highly recommended if you want good food at a reasonable price.
Good, quick food and good serving size everything I'd expect from a Hungarian home kitchen.
No pretence or irony in the setting or servings enjoyed
We came here for a birthday party with a really big group. We ended up taking most of the restaurant up. The service was great and the food came out pretty fast. We started off with a cabbage roll (so good) and then we shared between 2 people the wooden plater which is really good. I would defiantly recommend it if its your first time having Hungarian food.
I came here for my parents anniversary, so we ordered every single dessert on the menu. Im accustomed to home Romanian food which has some Hungarian influence or vice versa, and this restaurant did not disappoint! I enjoyed my favourite dish as well, plum dumplings which were made perfectly. The mushroom stew was a bit salty for my taste but it was toned down by the mashed potato side. The custard dessert was excellent & I especially enjoyed the lemon dessert. My sister ordered the 'very special dessert' and it was not like anything I've ever had, it was delicious and unique.
Really like the new location and it’s right on Danforth so there’s lots of parking nearby. The platter was amazing as usual and I think even better than I remembered. The fries were so crispy and tender in the middle. The schnitzels were very flavourful and not dry at all. Cabbage rolls were a great way to start any meal! Lots of seating that is clearly well spaced from each other
I am from Hungary, just arrived back to visit Toronto and although I have gone to many restaurants in Hungary trying to show my foreign friends real tasty Hungarian food, I never tasted such good food, authentic, just like my grandmother made it! This is a true blast from the past experience with so much healing properties not only helping to remember good memories from the past but I’m sure helping Hungarians living in Canada to feel more home. On top of all that this, super service, they went out of our way with their kindness and got us cottage cheese after they ran out by the end of our main meal to make us the dessert we yearned for! Amazing restaurant and amazing people! Thank you so much Budapest Restaurant, you are truly amazing! ❤️
Great Hungarian food! We had the Budapest platter for two and then the Dobos Torta (chocolate cake) and Crepe with Nutella. The Budapest platter for 2 was an absolute huge portion of food that could easily feed 3 people! Started with cabbage roll with some onions as the appetizer and it tasted fastastic and reminded me of my youth :). Then the main platter came out and we were thrown back by the amount of food, the beautiful flavours and the colourful overall fantastic presentation. The service was fantastic too as well and the patio outdoors is great for enjoying the summer weather while eating a great meal. The Dobos torta which is a 12 layer chocolate cake was aboslutely beautiful flavour and the crepe with nutella was a great sized portion and gobbled up quickly! Located on the danforth right beside a bike lane with parking, so very easy to get there with a bike. Overall a great experience and already planning to go back!
Much more accessible than their old location especially being on the Danforth. Service is fast and efficient and the food is still amazing. Very authentic. Perogies were filling and flavourful. The Cordon Bleu was excellent! Would definitely come back for the other dishes.
Amazing place. You can see that my name is a Latino name. I know nothing about Hungarian food, but this place blew my mind. Great food, serves are friendly. I loved it.
The server was excellent (friendly and attentive). The food was also good, however it was obvious that it had been reheated. The cabbage roll was moderately warm on the outside and cooler on the inside (clear sign of reheating). The schnitzel was also dry and the coating moist (non-crisp), as if it had been cooked earlier and simply reheated. The best part was probably the crepe, although I must admit that the walnut tasted very sugary (not sure why). Food was unique, hence 3.5 stars (rounds up to 4 stars) I always give restaurants a second chance so I'll be back at some point and will edit my review if things are different.
Great place, great food, a great service. We got the platter for two and it was plenty for 4 people! The flavour was really good as well. Leave space for the crepe (with apricot Jam). Will definitely go back! Thank you!!
Delicious!! The service was very quick and the portions were huge. Pierogies were cooked nicely and sausage was perfect appetizer. Wish they had Hungarian beers!
