Review Hogtown Smoke On The Beach - Toronto

My first patio in 2 years and the lunch did not disappoint. Rich, marbled brisket with just the right balance of fat and meat. The Mac n Cheese had just the right amount of toothiness. Outstanding service!

Great old school southern restaurant!...first time customers, so we had to ask our friendly server Tricia for some hints on what to order, and we were not disappointed with her suggestion of the "pig in a black dress" platter, side order of ribs. The brisket, in particular, was outstanding! We will definitely be back, when next in the area.

We were so excited to see that Hogtown Smoke on Queen St survived the pandemic!! We managed to hit the patio a little while ago and the poor woman that runs the place had just had her place broken in too and trashed the day before. The owner is such a kind and caring person and will do anything to accommodate whatever you’d like from her. We drive down from Oshawa all the time and always enjoy the food. Unfortunately no pictures…she made us the old school kitchen sink fries and we inhaled them and I had an order of wings. They were plump and juicy and lots of flavour and hubby had the smash burger (was a little salty for him) along with an order of their homemade Mac and cheese and their amazing purple slaw. Can’t wait until the weather is a little warmer and we can sit outside again. Keep up the great work we know managing this pandemic hasn’t been easy ❤️

Love the food and the staff are very friendly. The Ribs, Briskit and the family sharing meals are all fantastic. Never had a bad experience, cant wait to enjoy the great meal again. Anyone who wants classic BBQ look no further.

Ordered from here via Uber Eats tonight. We purchased ribs, brisket, chicken wings, coleslaw, and mac & cheese balls. If 3* is a completely average restaurant experience, I have to give Hogtown Smoke 2* as slightly below average. The price you pay does not get you the quality you expect. Everything was inexcusably dry, to the point where you're having to aggressively gnaw at the bones to separate them from the meat (when you could even get it all off), and the brisket needed a sip of water to help get it down. I don't think I've had BBQ this dry anywhere in Toronto. It's such a shame because I think the seasoning and flavour was otherwise among the best. We deviated from our usual BBQ place (Beach Hill Smokehouse - amazing btw) because we were intrigued by the Mac & Cheese Balls. They were actually really tasty so this part of the order we don't regret. The only thing we ordered that was truly bad was the coleslaw. I really don't understand this slaw at all. It's an extremely sour vinegar slaw that tastes strongly of plums or prunes or something. I really don't know how coleslaw can go so wrong.

Delicious! I need to go back and try everything else on the menu. Every piece had its own unique, mouthwatering flavour. Heated patio was super cute, and we sat there without jackets on a very cold day - highly recommend!

Seriously dirty place; Table, floors, bathroom. Winter time and the ductless AC was dripping. The macaroni salad has zero flavour, the red slaw had vinegar on it. That's it. The bun for brisket was a cheap white gushy hamburger bun. Seriously needs a good clean and a new cook with some tastebuds. Terrible lunch.

Stumbled upon this gem at the beaches on our bike ride. Ordered the fried bird on a bun with a bacon potato salad on the side. My friend ordered the brisket Sami with fries on the side. It was delicious! I would say it’s pricier than I would’ve liked, but would still go back and try something else on their menu!

This place really sets a relaxed and friendly atmosphere! I loved how each person that came in for take out or eat engaged in conversation with the other patrons! The food is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates slow roasted meats!

Great addition to Toronto's food menu - and the smell of the place has your mouth watering before you are even seated. Loved , Loved, loved this place

Poutine was decent. Good amount of pork and gravy was tasty. Unfortunately the fries were pretty cold by the time we got the order. Also the burger was horrible. Two tiny patties with an uninspiring bun...

The only thing we liked was the selection of sauces. The strawberry jalapenjo was pretty tasty.
You Gonna Eat That?
It's not easy to impress me with food. However, hogtown smoke has done it.
Been trying to watch what I eat for several months now, so I wasn't too worried about going into a place like this.
Let's start with the table side sauces. Every one I tasted was pretty good. Notable the mango/habanero, and the smoked strawberry and something. Very nice!
Beans were tasty as was the berry salad. Either could've been had alone. Grilled cheese pulled pork was decent, made only better by the above mentioned sauces.
Hidden patio out back shielded from direct sun was just right. Mist infused fans were going to ensure you didn't overheat.
Food portions were good and overall, I have no complaints. And that's not because I was just released from prison...

Making the hike out to the beaches was worth it for Hog Town's food and welcoming atmosphere.
For a great experience:
Start with the Mac and Cheese Balls which pair perfectly with Amsterdam’s cruiser
For the main, go for the Carolina pulled pork sandwich, hands down best pulled pork in the city. Pairs well with an amber ale.

We came down here on a Saturday afternoon with a group reservation but, there were a few tables available anyway. The place is not big so, it might get crowded easily but, the ambiance and decor works pretty well.

The food was actually good and the portions were decent and reasonably priced. We had a couple of starters (Bacon Wrapped Jalapeños, Brisket "Burnt Ends") and a platter with our favorites (brisket, pulled-pork, ribs, corn bread, coleslaw, mac n' cheese, caesar salad) and we weren't disappointed.

The service was absolutely friendly and diligent. Our friends were really late but, our server managed to make the wait less annoying and boring by taking very good care of us.

I was disappointed. Came here last year and had the same thing beef brisket sandwich platter. Was not the same quality. Meat tasted dry. Also came with sauce last time, but this time there was none. Felt like the place is cheaping out.
Service was good and did not have to wait to long.

First time trying out hogtown smoke. We went on an early Saturday evening at around 6 pm. The decor and vibe was unique and had character however the food was at best mediocre. Nothing was bad but nothing was exceptionally memorable or delicious. The prices are reasonable and portion sizes are decent. We ordered a platter with 2 sides for 2 people and it was more than enough. Service could have been faster, it took 40+ minutes for us to receive our food after ordering even though it was not a full house. Overall hogtown smoke was an average restaurant.

Well-priced barbecue items, decent-sized portions. Brisket was almost inedible because of its fat quotient, and chicken wings were almost too salty to eat. Side ribs were meaty and tasty. Standout was the mac and cheese side: pasta was cooked perfectly. They were out of a lot of beers. Service was friendly and efficient, but we weren't offered dessert after a fast-paced meal, which made us wonder if they were pressed to turn covers quickly in favour of emphasising a great customer experience. Music was gratingly loud and consisted mainly of Classic Rock.

Great food, timely service. Beautifully done environment inside, gives whole Barbeque experience. Must have: Ribs, fries and Jarritos soda.

Meat fest! Really good food. Beans are great as well as the meat. Although it's not consistent been three times one good. One not as good. Then good again.

18$ for a sandwich! The brisket is good, the bun unfortunately is bigger.
I wanted BBQ ...but I'm paying for a lot of bread plus forced to choose 2 sides that I couldn't care less about. I wouldn't go back there until they can offer just a sandwich with more meat. I felt like I paid 18$ for a coleslaw, a corn, a big bun and a small portion of brisket.

Food is pretty good. Watch out as the portion size is large. Be ready for a food coma when you leave. Sat in the patio which is a fun hidden spot in the Beaches.

Excellent! Took my boyfriend here for his birthday (he's a huge ribs fan) and we were both very impressed. Food was delicious, service was great. And bottles of wine are half price on Tuesdays! Looking to go back for all you can eat ribs on a Wednesday night sometime soon.

Ate at Hogtown Smoke tonight. The back patio was great and our waitress Ariel was really nice. The food was ok. The wings and ribs were a bit dry, the chicken had a bit too much lime flavour and the smoke was missing from the mac and cheese. A nice evening but likely will not return.

A pretty decent bbq joint although we found it a tad overpriced. We had the Brisket and a pulled pork sandwhich. Both were pretty solid, the brisket had good flavor and a good amount of fat which kept it moist. The pulled pork was pretty tasty but definitely needed some bbq sauce for extra punch. There are lots of side dish options but they are not that great. Sweet potato fries a bit soggy and was all the small ends - Smoked corn was poorly reheated (hot outside/cold inside), coleslaw was just red cabbage and vigenar and needed more balance. They gave a free grilled cheese sandwhich to my daughter which was much appreciated by her and us.

Atmosphere was fun, good music, nice dining room/patio, and pleasant service.

Would go back if in the area, we would probably try to platters and share between the two of us.

Not worth it. My boyfriend and I were really looking forward to trying some good barbecue in the area. We decided on take out because when we had previously walked in to the restaurant, not a single server acknowledged that we were even standing there. So we put our order through in person and walked home to wait 90 minutes for our food. Yes, it took an hour and a half. We picked up our food and brought it home. It wasn't until we got home that we realized we didn't get any of the sides we ordered and we had paid extra for the ones we specifically wanted. So we walked back to the restaurant to speak with the girl who took our order. I could hardly believe it when she told us they had run out of the sides that we had requested and so had randomly replaced them with whatever they had left. Not only did she charge us for what we had asked for in the first place, but she didn't even think to have the courtesy to tell us this when we picked up the food in the first place.
The meat is hardly worth the horrible service you get. The brisket was dry, the ribs were sinewy and chewy, and the pulled pork was completely lacking in flavour. You're better off having beers and barbecue in your own backyard.

Smokin service at Hogtown Smoke. Spending a weekend in TO and searched for a place for supper close to where we're staying. Lucky to get seating for 2 adults and 2 kids right away as Hogtown is small but in high demand. Adult mains were genuine and flavorful BBQ. Kids choices didn't go completely as planned but the staff were amazing in modifying the selection and making sure we all left feeling looked after like family. Our meal ended with an order of wings offered as a replacement for one of the kids choices that didnt work out. If Id known how fantastic the wings were from the start they would have been a part of my meal. Smoked and skinless. Full flavoured goodness. As we left it was standing room only for drop-ins waiting for a free table. The staff really made our night and guarenteed this place goes on our must-return list for our next trip back.

Excellent BBQ Dinner. Was watching a show and saw a clip about the food truck. I than found they had a restaurant so we tried it back in the summer. Not a huge place so we were fortunate to get a table for two at around 5:30. Than a line formed and the wait seemed long. The overall food was excellent. My fiancee said they were the best fries she ever had, they use some seasoning which made them fantastic. The sides were all great, she had a pulled pork sandwich which was fantastic. I made a special request for a sandwich that was only served on their truck. The waitress went above and beyond, called the owner and they made it for me. It was to die for. Will definitely return.

So Good!!!. This place has the best brisket and corn bread by far! Jalapeño poppers were sooooo good! Loved the atmosphere and service too. Check this place out, you won't be disappointed. The negative reviews are confusing to me as I've been to many smoke places and I would definitely rate this as my favorite. I can't wait for round two!

Wow. What is wrong with people?!?! I don't know where they are coming from but this was the best dinner we had in a long time.

We each had a brisket sandwich, two orders of cornbread each and split bacon jalapeño poppers.

We'll DEFINITELY be back!

I didn't think it was possible to screw up BBQ this badly without a drunken uncle working the grill.

The brisket was dryer than the bun, and the bread was like the Sahara. They being you several sauces....apparently they slow cook their meat but do not marinade it? This was the case for myself and my friend, who ordered the pulled pork. Shouldn't barbecued meat be saucy?

You get two sides per order, and there's a lot to choose from. They're probably no better than the mains from our experience. The fries were nearly inedible because they were so overlooked. The baked beans were the hilight of the evening.

Decent beer list at least.

I would not go back and do not recommend.

Just kind of meh... Was not terribly impressed. Diners at my table agreed, I can make better smoked BBQ than this..

Went to Hogtown for a take-out lunch yesterday and have to admit, was excited after loving their food truck. Ended up dissapointed after dropping over $32 for two sandwiches (both brisket). Just way too much to pay for brisket that I actually found very dry and lacking flavor. They asked if I wanted spicy or sweet BBQ sauce and I didn't realize that by going with spicy it meant "surface of the sun hot". Sheesh. Nonetheless, not a terrible spot but the prices would need to drop drastically for me to go back.

Pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries and beans. Beans had lot of onions but were surprisingly good. Fries soggy. Too much bread and not enough meat on sandwich and meat pretty bland. Also 2 large chunks of tendon or some other unchewable objects found in meat. Sauces excellent along with service (quiet afternoon, so was bartender). Overall disappointed.

Lost neighbourhood regulars with poor customer service!. A neighbour of mine recently ordered take out at Hog Town which we did once a week or went in once a week! Our minimum weekly was $150 spent here at this location. When ordering from their site he went in to purchase the burgers and they were marked up!! The girl at the counter couldn't care less to hear his point of view saying "prices are subject to change" NO WHERE!!! on your site does it state prices are subject to change. We were all baffled at the disrespect given to us. Our neighbour has since e-mailed expressing his terrible customer service experience and no one has even followed up. It's too bad this place doesn't realize the neighbourhood keeps them alive come winter and now we are passing the word along. Keep your customers happy money doesn't last forever doing poor customer service! (It was never about the money more about the principle way of dealing with this situation)

Very Filling. I had the brisket sandwich for lunch. It had several 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick slices of smoked brisket on a nice soft roll. The meat had a nice bark on the outside and was tender, juicy and full of flavour. I tried both the mild and spicy sauces. I liked the spicy a little better. I would definitely eat here again.

The cards entitled us to one small sandwich (or poutine) from onsite food truck Hogtown Smoke . I ordered the brisket sandwich and there was tons of meat sandwiched between the little bun! There wasn’t too much..

Poutine has its own holy trinity characterized by fabulous fries, great gravy and cheese curds. Hogtown almost reached divinity. The fries were a good size, taste and texture (which is tough since poutine fries get really mushy, really fast). The pulled pork got bonus points. It had a huge, juicy pork flavour and good seasoning. My one criticism was the final execution because the curds didn’t melt under the gravy.

We went to Hogtown Smoke on Friday evening for a family get together. Our unique options around the area were somewhat limited. Our initial choice would have been a traditional pub, but all for the better – Hogtown Smoke turned out to be quite a delight! They asked that we call and hour ahead of time to save us a spot. APPEARANCE The smallish façade is not difficult to pass without noticing. Their hog illustration does not get as much attention as one would hope. There is no front patio, but two large windows open right out to create the second best thing for the folks crammed inside. It looked a bit tight to us walking in. Perhaps that was driven by the fun interior - metal buckets as lights, brick walls and plenty of colourful paintings for sale. We should note, people were not dressed as casual as we hoped. Either way.. the trick here is their marvelous back patio!

Beyond the food itself, the restaurant has a fun, warm and welcoming vibe. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Really when we visit a restaurant it’s 75% the food and 25% the overall experience…right?

The tiny room exudes happiness. And not just because the aromas of slowly smoked meat invade your senses like the sweet smell of freshly cut grass, it’s the bubbling conversation of
Jess W.
Take a look at this beauty! The cheesy poutine had a delicious gravy which wasn’t oversalted and was topped with tender pieces of pulled pork.

Cram in early here and prepare to feast. It will be easy to overeat in this paleo heaven since the platters are the way to go and the meat is so darned tasty! Try to avoid anything containing mayo to reduce the calorie load. You may be tempted by the only "vegetable" which is cole slaw but the fat in there is only adding to the bottom. Pulled dishes tend to be fattier and have more sugary sauce so go for the roasted and smoked dishes instead.

Or just eat. And make up for it tomorrow with extra gym time and a vegan day.

The food and the staff here are exceptional!
So is the patio and the beer selection.
The wings are literally (and I use this word appropriately) the best wings I've ever had.

The pig out platters are great, and have TONS of food.

The only thing that doesn't make this place a 5 star is my (personal) desire for some more nutritious sides. I'd probably eat here a bit more often otherwise.

p.s. I think the reviewer below is talking about Hogtown Vegan. This is not a vegan restaurant. If you come here looking for vegan food, you will be so sad.
