Review Barsa Taberna - Toronto

Amanda Krishnakumar
We had the $40 tasting menu, which was amazing. It was picked by our server and the chef and we got to give input on which items we really wanted to try. Everything tasted amazing and it was great to taste things I normally wouldn't have ordered (green bean salad, which I'm very glad they gave us). The service was also great. We weren't sure if we should try the $40 or $50 tasting menu, so before our last dish, our server came back to ask if we were still hungry and if we wanted more, which then would've allowed us a could more dishes for the $50 tasting menu!

Very good food and service. Unfortunately, steak arrived medium-well rather than our request for medium-rare. Octopus is expensive but delicious.

Great food! Excellent young chef from Colombia that is not afraid to experiment with different flavours. Wonderful service. Good drink specials. Expect to pay a lot, but worth it.

Unfortunately not a very positive experience. While the service is attentive, I find the food to be mediocre. The octopus dish is mainly potatoes with small pieces of (slightly burnt) octopus scattered on the plate. The noodle dish is a bit rich for my taste. The beef tartare dish was a bit more decent. Overall I find the price to be too pricey for what you get. On top of that, the AC was broken in door during a hot summer day.

Well we were stumped last night on where we should have dinner and did some digging and ended up at Barsa. Small place hidden beneath the LCBO at the St.Lawrence Market district and I mean hidden the door is sunken in behind the bricks. If you have small children in strollers you will need a second set of hands to help you down a few steps in the restaurant, but once you're in then there is no issue except for the cramped quarters where it is hard to store the stroller. The hostess told us to store the stroller beside the bar area which we were fine with. So they serve Spanish style tapas here and the price is very reasonable but mainly the food is bueno. If you check-in through Yelp and tell the server you get a complimentary pincho, our pincho last night was chicken liver pate spread over bread and was seasoned very tasty. Friday night it seems that their Estrella tallboy is on special for $7 a can, sure I'll bite and try it. Smooth beer light and refreshing. We ordered a whole wack of food scared that it was not enough to feed the 4 of us. Firstly we ordered a tabla de embutidos which is an assortment of salami and some pickled veggies as well as some chicken pate. I found this was a really nice way to wake up your palate. We also ordered the croqueta de jamon y albacora dish. Wow this was good basically its a croqueta filled with ham and tuna deep fried and sits on top of pickled veggies with a lemon aioli sitting on top. Another dish to order. We ordered a noodle type dish called fideos del campo. It consists of catalan noodles with broccoli, roasted olives, almonds and goat cheese. This one might not be on everyone's radar as the goat cheese they use is quite strong and powerful. I love how they serve this dish right from the pan that it was cooked in, be careful of those fingers as it is hot straight from the oven, The lomito con chimichhurri is good, tender striploin topped with house made chimicurri which is very flavorful and brought the dish together. We also ordered the tabla de chorizo which is basiccally an assortment of chorizo with grainy mustard pickled veggies again and some bread. This is another good sharing dish for the table and not spicy at all. Final dish was paella de mariscos or seafood paella. the rice was wow perfectly cooked perfectly seasoned and the portion is pretty big. The seafood was fresh and plentiful. Must order dish when here. Service is good lots of servers around and smiling. Kept the cups always topped up and table always clean. I think if it's an intimate spot this would be a perfect spot for date night.

Wow, I definitely recommend! Not only was the food amazing, it was a whole culinary experience. We sat at the bar and Matteo the bartender was very attentive and friendly towards us. I loved watching him make so many different drinks and he put together a menu that we both savored with every bite!

Great spot for food and drinks. The atmosphere in this restaurant is great (feels like you're in an underground cave, which is kind of neat!). They have a wide drink selection, of which the Sangria was the best. We had the Cava sangria and it complemented our meal well! We did the $60 tasting menu which is a great deal as the waitress and chef choose an assortment of dishes based on your food preferences. We got the raw top sirloin (to die for!!), the scallop ceviche (super fresh with lots of citrusy hints, great palate cleanser), albacore tuna and jamon croquetas (came out piping hot and was very tasty), grilled octopus with chorizo (flavours were amazing - one of my favourite dishes), and a massive seafood paella with mussels, clams, shrimp, and jamon. To finish, we had the most delicious churros I've ever had with apple bourbon ice cream (just unreal), dulce de leche, and apple purée. A very enjoyable Spanish meal!

Delicious food, great customer service. Get the tasting menu if you can afford it. It was delicious!! Surprisingly the best thing we tasted was the beet salad, but everything we tasted was amazing! The only downside was the long wait even though we made reservations. However it was because the previous party did not want to leave, so can't really blame the restaurant

Great experience!! We had the $65.00 tasting menu and it was awesome!! I highly recommend the tasting menu if it is your first time. It will allow you to get the feel of the food in the restaurant! The sangria was so bomb! The server was very friendly, polite and attentive! I highly highly recommend this restaurant!! Definitely, will be a regular customer!

Was here for my parents anniversary! I'll start with what wasn't good. My mom loves Spanish guitar and when she booked she was told they start at 5 pm. So everyone rushed through rush hour traffic only to discover it started at 6 30. No big deal as some of us were late but why say 5 then? Then My family being new to the tapas experience were very confused on the menu and until asked point blank to explain it - almost 30 minutes later - our server - who was pretty passive and at times even irritates - finally did so. The service was not pleasant - all I would expect is the odd smile and some kindness. It actually felt like she was doing us a favour by being there. One weird prime example our table of 6 only got half the waters refilled after a spicy meal... and then had to be prompted and asked for it. There was no checking in on how we are doing... I asked for something special for my parents anniversary and another server brought a dessert - we didn't know it was the "special" I requested and the server seemed clueless too so she thought she got the wrong order and went back with it - it was confusing and could have been handled better. Our main server, returned, exasperated and almost with an eye roll but with a forced smile told us it's on the house. I don't know if she was having a bad day but it really put a damper on our experience!! On the bright side - the food was delicious! I expected European size portions and was pleasantly surprised that they were larger. All the dishes has a twist right down to the papas bravas. The atmosphere and interior is very pleasant, dim lighting, artwork. And of course the live guitar was a great touch! All the other staff besides our own server unfortunately were pleasant and kind. I would come back here and hopefully will have better service the next time!

Barsa Taberna was an AMAZING experience!!! I went with some girlfriends and my three month old twin boys for a night out. Right from the front door the customer service was impressive, the hostess and server assisted me with my twin stroller down the few steps, made sure we were comfortable and settled in. Our server was attentive and noted all our likes and dislikes to come up with a DELICIOUS tasting menu, it was the best $60 I've ever spent on a meal. We'll definitely be back again

I took my friend here only because it was advertised as the #1 sangria in Toronto. Fair enough the sangria was very good and top 5 in Toronto personally for me. Price was 20 for a small pitcher and 36 for a large. If you're there with a friend, its worth it. The downside to eating there was the portion size of the "tappas (appetizers)" we had. Luckily right before we came, we had uncover a promotion while riding in the cab - buy a pitcher of sangria or a bottle of wine, recieve a tappa for free. It took the waitress about 10 mins to offer us water and another 10 mins to order food. Luckily the amazing hostess was there to help us with questions regarding the food because the waitress was more attentive to the patio tables on the top rather than me and my friend down below. When she had finally come to take our order - I had mentioned to her the promotion - that to which she had no clue of. She eventually got it, just took her a bit to clue in, I mean even the hostess knew about it! Overall, I don't think I'd eat there again, definately would have their sangrias again for sure. Oh and the hostess should definitely be promoted to a server or something :)

Great ambiance and the food is outstanding - your palate will get delighted and your senses likewise ... never have I tried Spanish food and now I want to try it again but....only here...fantastic...and you must try the specialty drink made with gin where the top of the glass is wrapped with a cucumber on the inside - my new favourite beverage - fresh, tantalizing and not too sweet - it’s perfect

What a wonderful place. Had the tasting menu and the last paella course took forever to come out. They explained to us that the chef wasn't happy with the dish and wanted to make us a new one. They didn't charge us for it and brought additional drinks to us. What great service! We will be back for sure!

Phenomenal food, relaxing atmosphere, great service! The presentation and unique blend of flavors are extremely pleasant for your eyes and palate, the red sangria was an excellent choice to wash down the fair portion we received and the coffee afterwards was definitely a wake-up and refreshing way to end our meal! Highly recommended!!!

Service was ok, paella was good, their tinto sangria was excellent. My only disappointment is the size of the iberico ham, I know it is a price meat but for $30 , they should give you at least 6 little slices (instead if 4) and also churros for their price they were to little and way to skinny if you don't want to increase the amount at least make them to a decent size.

Beautiful place, delicious food, good service and the best sangria I have ever had! Better than what I had in Barcelona can't wait to go back again.

Worst service with terrible food. I had the seafood linguine there and it tasted very very wrong to the point where I couldn't eat it. After waiting for our waitress to come around to ask how our food was my boyfriend had already finished his average hamburger. When I told the waitress that the linguine tasted wrong she said I was wrong and it was fine. She ended up charging us for the food that I took 2 bites out of and didn't offer any compensation. I wouldn't recommend going here, my experience really shows how much they care about their customers.

We used to go to Barsa a lot last year. Today we went back the first time in about 8 months and were really looking forward to the food. Unfortunately, they have changed the menu completely. The "patatas bravas" are now potato wedges with tomato sauce. The menu used to be amazing, really different fancy Spanish food like fried zucchini salad and these chickpea fritters that were just delicious. But now, it's a tiny menu and the food is nothing outstanding. Really too bad as this was our go to spot.
