Review Oyshi Sushi - Toronto

Matvey Ryabov
The first thing I noticed was that the workers are very, very, human. They do not hide behind a mask of professionalism, but instead feel like they are actually serving you. The sashimi we ordered was very fresh and the arrangement was pretty, but the fish was lacking some of its fishiness -- flavour. Otherwise, the food was good. We ordered some plum wine, and the waitress joked about us looking fairly young, but that's not a complaint and it was delicious. I would definitely visit again. A hidden gem. The actual restaurant is also very nicely decorated, with the booths each having their own curtains and walls.

Place was busy, we had to wait 5 minutes to be seated. The hostess attitude was very pleasant, all servers extremely polite and helpful. The salad was so fresh, lettuce so crunchy, taste wonderful. Sushi and sushimi was very fresh and delicious. Will come back again. Why not 5 stars? The place a little cramped and interior dated.

Great atmosphere in this place, they have little walled off booths for up to 4 people. I got the sake dome and the fish was yummy with a big serving of tasty sushi rice as well. Our server was really friendly!

One of the best places downtown. Great service and they always give me free miso soup 🥰 I also really like the privacy. The sushi is so damn good and I highly recommend the salmon teriyaki. Definitely worth the price.

This small and cozy restaurant located in a side alley is easily missed unless you are looking for it, even more since there are construction nearby. The interior decor gives a nice Japanese vibe, while the food tasted fresh.
Jupiter Mars
The large shared platter has a good variety. Place is cozy and gives off an authentic Japanese vibe.

Delicious sushi, sashimi/rolls, and super friendly staff/service. Even the tea is really good!

Wonderful quiet little mom and pop joint.. Cuteste private room/booths. Very small and intimate.. food was fresh and fairly priced... miso soup was so good! ...only thing missing was some nice Japanese music in the background to set the mood. Will definitely be back!

Best Sushi Ever! Wish they were in Atlanta... Definitely will be returning on my next trip here. Going to Las Vegas where I hear there's a Oyshi Sushi also, hopefully they are just as good when I visit next month.

So much food! A small little place but delivers big on portions. Ordered gyoza, sashimi dome, and teriyaki chicken bento for two of us and we brought back a full lunch portion with the stuff we couldn’t finish. Service was great and quick, food was fresh and yummy.

The portions were huge! The food tasted great and fresh! I was a happy girl after my meal. The ambience is homely and cosy. It could a great date night spot as well.

Super fresh! Way better than any place within a few miles, if not Toronto! Peaceful, intimate and kind. Perfect for a relaxing and delicious evening.

I have visited this restaurant a few times over the past few months...<br/>Cute little place with limited seating and 3 booths. There are lots of autographs of famous people who have visited the place. <br/>Bathrooms are clean and tidy.<br/>Service is good and attentive. They even let us in a few minutes before they were open one day since it was raining outside. <br/>Really flavourful miso soup served nice and hot.<br/>Toasty tea that was never empty.<br/>Sushi lunch A - delicious fresh fish sliced expertly. <br/>Sashimi lunch - good fish as well but the lukewarm and greasy gyoza served with it was sad.<br/>Tempura soba noodle soup was disappointing because the broth was nearly flavourless...had to add soy and hot sauce to get any taste. At least the tempura served with it was good.<br/>Fish is fresh and prices are decent especially for that area<br/>Would return to try some other dishes!

We ordered the sashimi combo and a roll. Quality and quantity was just average, nothing special in my opinion.<br/><br/>Service was good. Location is good. The page description says "patio seating available" which is completely misleading as we went there to eat on the patio and was disappointed there was none.<br/><br/>Overall I probably won't go back unless I have to.

fresh catches from the maritimed served daily. a complately sustainable, ocean friendly seafood menu that uses herbs and produce culled from venues rooftop garden. a sleek classic design, oyshis oyster bars executive chef titillating offerings, including oyater rockfeller ( hot shellfish with wilted spinach and hollandaise), claims carvonara and seared hokkaido scallop seal the deal.

On a recent visit to Toronto my son and I ate here the service was wonderful and the sushi was fresh and reasonably priced. The only thing missing was yakatori one of my sons favourites. But otherwise a great sushi place close to air canada centre and across from the Westin !!

Went to this conveniently located sushi and Japanese restaurant for a quick lunch. The sushi was ok. I have had better. The bento boxes was nothing special. I also felt the pricing was a bit too much for the quality.

The food is great! Conveniently located in my neighbourhood and it's really great to have a great sushi place nearby. The owners and waitresses are all very nice and polite to all their customers. The quality of their food is also top notch. Every time I try a different dish from this place, is always a nice surprise! My favourite, and highly recommended, is the Sashimi Donburi! Yummm!

Life is too short...... Etch!<br/>Tempura with mushy (frozen?) shrimp and uncooked batter in centre. Tuna maki with no texture and flavor. <br/>Sad.

Oyshi vs. Kokoro. The reviews that talk about how delicious Kokoro is and explain how to get there from Oyshi are highly suspect. I have visited both restaurants and Kokoro is not even close to Oyshi in terms of freshness, quality, service or atmosphere. Other than three high chairs against a cramped, barely there counter, Kokoro doesn't even have any indoor seating. I have brought several guests to Oyshi and they have all said that the sushi is amazing. A favourite among us is the sushi pizza, which is baked instead of fried, and the rainbow roll. Wow!<br/><br/>I used purchase take out (due to lack of seating) for guests on Sundays from Kokoro when Oyshi is closed and no one has ever complimented it, and one opinionated friend even asked that we try somewhere, ANYWHERE else next time she visits. <br/><br/>Anyway, this is just my two cents. I cannot believe those couple of reviews are genuine.

Best Sushi in GTA. Went there yesterday with 4 of us and we all agreed that if surpassed all of our personal favorites. Great ambiance, great friendly service and reasonable prices given the location.

Excellent sushi place. This is an excellent small (actually, tiny) restaurant that has been successfully in the same location for years. There are a huge number of testimonials on paper posted around the restaurant, mainly from NHL players and groups -- seems the most used team hotel is nearby. There used to be a testimonial from singing group Manhattan Transfer as well, but I don't see that any more.<br/><br/>The sushi is very good, very fresh, service has always been prompt and efficient for me. If you order a combo with soup the soup will come very fast; cold items (sushi, etc) will often come separately from hot items (tempura, etc) if a combo is ordered. <br/><br/>Portions are very large; prices are not as low as the nearby Kokoro but quantity and quality are higher. <br/><br/>Delightful to eat in at one of the small tables or in the private (curtained off) booths; singles will be seated at the sushi bar which is fine. Takeout is available, although it's hard to find a menu online. Best to call. Bento box combos are a good bet for takeout.

Very Glad I Came. Wow, I hope people choose to overlook the poor reviews here and give the place a try. I've been here twice - once with some friends visiting from the US in May 2013 and again a month later in June with my roommate during the Waterfront festival. The first time with my American friends the restaurant wasn't busy and the food service was very fast. The second time they were really hopping (they had folks setup out on the patio as well) but we were still well taken care of.<br/><br/>The food itself was fantastic. Both times I ordered the beef teriyaki bento + drink and it is well worth it (you get a little bit of everything). Usually when you order a bento you get a box, but all the bento parts came out on plates once they finish preparing it (I thought maybe they'd gotten my order wrong at first, but nope) and its a lot more food than I've gotten elsewhere. Its also all piping hot. The tempura wasn't greasy and the sushi that came with the bento melts on your tongue. I can't recal what my American friends ate, but my roommate ordered the straight up Beef Teriyaki from the menu (there's only a dollar difference between that and the bento version) but you get twice as much meat on the regular order versus the bento version. <br/><br/>PS - for the sports fan, this itty bitty restaurant's walls are covered in papers with autographs on them hanging from everywhere they could put one. NHL, MLB, NBA, NL, CFL... a whole pile of them. It's really facinating.<br/><br/>I've been very pleased with my $25 both times. They will get my business whenever I have a reason to be in downtown TO.

Good find. Went to the Leonard Cohen Concert at Air Canada Centre. We were going to avoid Oyshi because of the one or two bad reviews but, before events at ACC , The Miller Tavern and The Fox have long waits. Gave Oyshi a try and what a pleasant surprise. Service was fast and pleasant. Drinks were on the table in two minutes with a free bowl of Edamame. We ordered the Teriyaki Beef Bento and the Teriyaki Salmon Bento. <br/>The miso soup was there in seconds along with a very crisp green salad. The tempura bowls had three large, very tasty shrimp and numerous tempura vegetables. The teriyaki salmon was very nice; the Beef Teriyaki was acceptable but a bit bland. And there were rice bowls on the side. A wine and a beer and the bill was $56 including tax.<br/>Next time, and there will be a next time, we will order one Bento and maybe one sushi plate; two Bentos was too much food for the two of us.<br/>A tip: It says 12 Queens Quay but you can't find it there. Go behind the building. It is actually visible from Harbourfront not Queens Quay.

Bad service, bad maki rolls. Bad food tastes better if the service is amazing, but unfortunately Oyshi Sushi failed to provide even adequate service.<br/><br/>My friend lives in the neighborhood, and we had wanted to go to Kokoro - famous for its delicious maki rolls and pleasant, efficient service. Since it was Monday and it was closed, we decided to try Oyshi out. <br/><br/>The first girl took my order, and then asked me to wait while she counted out her till. I said "That's fine, take your time." I guess she took that literally, because when the next waitress came in, instead of finishing my order and taking my money, she stopped to chat in front of me with her co-worker. I'm so glad they had the time to giggle and joke around with each other, but it seemed strange (but actually, stupid) that she wouldn't finish up my order and take my money. She stopped talking to her co-worker after two minutes, and then finished counting out her till. THEN she took my order, while my friend waited to be asked for her own order.<br/><br/>She never was. Instead, the same girl just hung around, while my friend held onto a menu and looked at her. After an awkward minute, I said "My friend wants to order as well..." This should have been clear, since we had both discussed "What do you plan on ordering?" etc before hand. <br/><br/>We then waited for our food (we were the only ones waiting for take out, and the small restaurant was obviously not busy at all, it being 5 PM on a Monday), and I saw our food waiting on the counter shortly after. The first girl left, and the second girl took over. Again, we were clearly waiting for our take out, but the girl just kept hanging out and doing nothing. Every time she went somewhere to fiddle with a box or get a piece of paper, I thought she was finally handing us our food. I thought, maybe (for some bizarre reason) there was something else she needed to add to our order. After more awkward waiting, and us staring at each other, I had to ask the second girl "Do you know how much longer out take out is going to take?"<br/><br/>Stupefied, she asked "Uh, what did you order?" There were only two of us, and two take out boxes on the counter. Through basic logic, it would not be difficult to surmise that those boxes were ours. I told her, and we were both aware that those boxes had been sitting there for some time, but silently she handed us our food and didn't apologize for the wait, or even thank us like most people would normally do? So we didn't say thank you either. <br/><br/>And the food was bad, of course. Sigh. The rice was dry, oddly packed on, and the seaweed for my handroll was stretchy like plastic? <br/><br/>Long story short, Kokoro is amazing and I love it dearly. Don't go to Oyshi. We were desperate for food, and made an unfortuante mistake. If it's a Monday and you need food in that area, settle for some onion rings from Harbour Sports Grille or something.

Worst sushi I've ever had.. I went here first in December 2011 when Kokoro sushi, down the street was closed. I wasn't pleased. At that time, I only ordered an avocado roll. The avocado was not fresh and was so tasteless I couldn't even finish it. <br/><br/>Today, my friend and I were planning on going to our favourite sushi place (as I mentioned) when we realised once more it was closed. After checking urbanspoon for ratings, we were surprised that Oyshi seemed to be doing really well, so we decided to go.<br/><br/>On arrival it took the front desk girl 15 minutes to take our order during which time she counted coins and gaily chattered away with her friend in the back, knowing full well we were waiting. After she took my friend's order she then ignored me until we spoke up and asked to take my order as well. Keep in mind the place was not full, there was one seated table and no one else waiting for takeout.<br/><br/>Our order was ready and placed behind her and for 15 minutes after that, we were kept waiting as no one made any move to give us that order. My friend and I literally had to flag the girl down and ask where our order was. At that time she then looked at the waiting orders (we were the only two trays there) and fluttered around them for about 5 minutes asking us what we ordered again (I presume to make it seem like she wasn't sure those were for us explaining why we kept waiting so long). Overall for very simple takeout we spent over 30 minutes there.<br/><br/>The food was terrible. The edmame was hard as if it was a day old. The rolls had too much rice on them. The shrimp tasted off. The seaweed was tough like leather. <br/><br/>I literally made an account because the meal was SO terrible I could not even stand to not make it known. <br/><br/>Never going back. Honestly, if you think the sushi here is good you haven't tried enough sushi to know.

Ate here for dinner with hubby and two kids on a visit to Toronto. Sushi was fresh and the udon soup was yummy. Tempura was also fresh and hot when it came to the table. Service could have been more attentive but overall, a very nice and affordable experience within walking distance of our hotel.

A little more expensive than $10 but really tasty and fresh, big portions

Wow! For 19.95 you'll have an absolute taste explosion! Very impressed.

Our favourite. Great food for a great price. And the ladies there are so awesome. We eat there once a week!

Always a happy customer .... Always look forward to ordering in from this restaurant. Friendly staff and great sushi ... try the spicey chicken too, the seasame seed sprinkles and the hint of chili spice in the honey-like sauce is a treat!<br/><br/>The Sushi B dinner will leave you happily stuffed.

Tiny tucked away sushi joint with cute private booths. The $10 bento (lunch) box is a great deal. Going for dinner would be pricey though. Would repeat.

The service here takes forever! You’ll end up finishing your lunch hour waiting for your food. Weird, since they have a lunch set menu for those rushing; we waited 45mins for our take away!

On my visits to Toronto, which is generally during the winter months, the temperatures touch -10 to -15 and going out for a meal is just such a pain. And this is when Oyshi Sushi comes in. Well for one, it is located on the ground floor of the World Trade Center where I say! So I need to take an elevator down and I am in Oyshi Sushi.<br/>Well, its not only the proximity that brings me here.<br/>Its the god damn food!! Owned by a Japanese family, this cosy little restaurant provides for excellent authentic Japanese food.<br/>Amongst my favourites are the tempura maki, sushi and sashumi. They make their stuff brilliantly!<br/>The place is a bit small but thats ok considering you are going to enjoy your meal. The staff is friendly and warm while the portions are pretty good. Being in downtown Toronto, the pricing will obviously be on the heavier side but that kind of makes up once your belly is content and full! Great food.
