Review Globe Bistro - Toronto

Ev Delen
Globe is far larger than it appears to be from the outside stretching quite far back and having both a private party area on the second floor as well as a roof top patio area. The atmosphere is decorated with attention to details and is good for small groups to be able to converse. The food was good - the lobster cakes were particularly delightful. Service was good but a little rigid. The espresso coffee was pulled too long and tasted burnt - perhaps the drip coffee would have been better.

Attended a wedding here, they serve organic and locally grown food, and the dishes were incredible! Service was awesome, the employees were polite and very accommodating. The owner is an all-round nice and chill guy. Highly recommend!

Food was great and fresh. Plated beautifully. Really friend staff. Only issue we were sat beside a loud table of weirdos at a terrible place in the restaurant.

I did the travelzoo six course tasting menu here and it was a great experience. Good service, delicious food and they cater to food allergies very nicely. The portions are also quite large for a tasting menu. Very romantic atmosphere and beautiful decor.

I tried the prix fixed thanksgiving menu. It was very delicious. Everything food wise was perfect. The service was a little slow and we were seated right the front where the garage style window was opened. Not the best for October.

Great service. Fantastic osyters. Decent wine list. The steak was little chewy. Elk was good. Beef cheeks were great.

Went here for a summerlicious lunch! Every single dish was delish. Some of our friends cancelled last minute but they were super nice about it. They had our table ready on the first floor and upon reaching there we requested a spot on the patio, they happily found a spot for us. I would love to go back to try their brunch menu!

Went here for American Thanksgiving. Had the butternut squash soup, turkey, and split desserts (apple pastry with ice cream and pumpkin creme brulé). Excellent food with decent service. The waiter could have been more attentive and the maître de could have been more friendly. Atmosphere is A+. I'd go back here next year. I was very full and satisfied.

When we started planning our wedding we decided that the food had to be amazing, it was our top priority and then the venue. I walked threw the doors of the Globe Bistro and I just knew this was it. The place was just the right fit for the both of us, the atmosphere was exactly what Andrew and I were all about. Then we tried the food and it was melt in your mouth incredible! I loved that there was character and history to the building. That I was going to walk down an aisle that was actually the floors of old bowling ally that use to call this building home. It was truly the greatest night of our lives. Staff were so welcoming to our guest that everyone just felt right at home. Till this day people are still talking about how crazy amazing our wedding was and how the food was to die for!!!! Sitting under the stars and feeling a gentle summer breeze, enjoying a drink at the end of the night of our wedding on the patio of the Globe Bistro. It was just an awesome ending to one night we will never forget. Every year my husband and I take a trip down memory lane and spend our wedding anniversary on the Danforth on the patio of the Globe bistro. We enjoy our special dessert every time, which is poutine! I want to thank Adrian and staff for all the help in everything that made our wedding go off with a hitch. To of course the chefs that made the food that no one will ever forget, we want to thank you all! I also want to thank Adrian and staff for welcoming Andrew and I back every year and thank you for making us feel so special!!! If you are having a wedding and you want a place for just a few family and friends don't look any further then the Globe Bistro. It will truly be a place for eat, love and laughter. A place for memories! A place for delicious, mouth watering food that you will want to lick your plate! 4 years later we look forward to seeing everyone again.

We had my daughter's wedding at the Globe Bistro on Aug. 13/16. The evening was exceptional in every way. All of the staff were totally professional, accommodating towards every request and NICE. Appetizers never stopped coming while the room was prepared for the main meal by the staff after the wedding ceremony and the canapés were soooo delicious. The dinner was outstanding and all of our guests commented on the delicious choices of menu. The bar staff were beyond belief with their ability to deal with so many people all requesting drinks of every sort, all at the same time. The food server staff were amazing and I was so impressed with their attentiveness and smooth service. We danced all night. The rooftop patio was a particular hit and just lovely. The attention to the details so impressed me that I have to commend Adrian and all of his staff at the Globe Bistro. All of our guests commented on how wonderful the wedding had been. You all made our event spectacular.

My boyfriend and I had a great dinner here last night. The staff were welcoming and friendly, not at all pretentious. The food was AMAZING. Very tasty. We had the butternut squash soup, which was delicious and steak that was top-notch. I would recommend this place to anyone. It's great place to take a date.

Had a great time with our family to celebrate My wife's birthday. Great food, atmosphere and Rooftop patio. A Big Thank You to Ed and his staff for making it a Happy Birthday indeed.

My husband and I got married at the Globe Bistro just the other day. I cannot express enough how amazing everything turned out. The set up was gorgeous, the service was amazing and on point, and the food was incredible. All of our guests kept raving about the beautiful venue and I couldn't be happier The attentiveness of the staff. Thank you so much to Adrian, Jake, Zeb, and Pierre for going above and beyond and doing an outstanding job.

This is a top-notch place. It's tastefully decorated, with very attentive staff and delicious food. You won't be disappointed.

Really interesting space with a nice vibe, not too crazy. And the food is really execellent, both in presentation and in flavours. Add in top-notch service, and you have a place I return to whenever I am in the neighbourhood!

Just celebrated my sister in laws wedding at Globe. Great quaint venue and the best meal we have had at a wedding! Can’t wait to come back for a date night 😊 Thanks for the wonderful service and memories!

The location & atmosphere were fantastic! The service was good. The food was tasty/okay...expected more “wow” for the prices, sadly Perhaps was an “off night”?

Delicious! Great customer service! Great ambiance! We went for Easter brunch, my only complaint is that he never asked if we would like the coffee or juice that was included and he gave water but never came back for a refill.

Excellent food. Staff is very professional right from the greeting at the door to the table and all of the appropriate attention was given us in a very timely way. Would heartily and sincerely recommend this restaurant for superb dining experience.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of the meal we were served rancid butter with the fresh bread - otherwise would have given it a 4... Service was really good. Salads were excellent, my steak was quite tough. All in all, a nice Bistro on the Danforth...

I love everything about Globe!! The service is fantastic, food is outstanding and the ambiance is perfect!! The Winterlicious menu tonight was a great surprise!

Charming little restaurant with good food and great service!

I went here on a weeknight, using a groupon for the 7 course tasting menu. <br/><br/>The space is lovely! Great decor. It's also much bigger than I would have imagined. The wine list focuses on Ontario wines. I enjoyed the Cave Springs dolomite.<br/><br/>The food was overall decent, with a few standouts and one disappointing dish. <br/><br/>We started off with a smoked duck cracker as an amuse bouche. It was delicious and smokey. Next came the one disappointing dish - a mushroom soup. It just wasn't all that flavourful. Next was a tempura squash blossoms dish with radish and some kind of delicious sauce. This was lovely.<br/><br/>Trout with crispy skin and pickled vegetables was delicious. The meat course was beef with a black quinoa and crispy kale. It was nicely cooked, and though the sides aren't foods a particularly enjoy, they were well prepared.<br/><br/>Cheese, crackers and apple came next and it was fine, though I'm not sure what the thinking behind charring the Brie rind was. <br/><br/>Dessert was peach based with fresh peach, a tasty ice cream and some cookie crumbs. Overall it was nice though there was also a really doughy lump of cookie on the plate that shouldn't have been there. <br/><br/>At the very end they gave out fantastic salted espresso caramel truffles.<br/><br/>The service was great, the food was mostly good, though not outstanding.

I decided to try this restaurant for this Summerlicious 2017. When you visit any one of these 150 restaurants, you come for an amazing experience and you come to be surprised. It is important the restaurant maintains a balance between high quality in the dining room and in the kitchen.  The Globe's website mentioned that "it is farm-to-table" and Chef Daniel Sanders cooking is superb". I made a reservation in advance for 1:00 pm on Friday, July 7th, 2017. When we arrived, our orders were taken promptly and the appetizers arrived within 10 minutes. The Fogo Island Cod Fry was literally 1 small piece of Cod Fry and some tartar sauce, My friend had the Peruvian Potato Salad which was maybe two small potatoes cut in half. The portions were so small in the oversize plates. Next the mains arrived, Lake Trout and I really prefer my fish not to be "swimming" in broth and the bokchoy was actually half of one. The fish and broth were both tasty.  My friend's Lamb Adobo she said that some pieces were tough others tender and the wild rice had a very strange texture that she did not care for. After we finished our mains, our waiter disappeared for a long time. We started to wonder what happened to desert. She went outside and another waiter arrived and brought my Peach Frangipane , Niagara peaches which were definitely not farm to table, they were canned peaches! The other dish was Milk Chocolate Pannacotta , which literally looked like "poop" on a plate as the picture shows. It was runny and a combination of pudding and fluid. How did the chef allow such a dish to leave the kitchen, I cannot comprehend.  My friend came back and called the waiter over and asked him to take it back and bring another one. Our original waiter finally appeared and acted surprised and informed us that the chef likes to "deconstruct" a dish and put his own spin on it. Really, by blowing it up? (I also included a picture of what it should look like) He agreed to bring her another one and when it arrived, it was just as bad as the first and it still had not set properly, She asked if she could have something else and he said there may be a chocolate torte and will ask the chef. He came back with another dish that looked like a Costco Tuxedo Brownie with whipping cream and she commented on it and  the waiter rudely asked "Are you going to eat it or not, if not I will take it back". She was so shocked by his attitude she did not know what to say.  We finished our mediocre deserts and he returned and dropped the bill on our table and left without a word. This type of behavior is unacceptable and if a customer has a valid complaint, learn to address it with professionalism . Will definitely not recommend, never return and it appears that Chef Sanders has lost his touch and control of his kitchen and the manager is unaware of his staff's awful behavior . By the way, my friend reported she got sick when she returned home and the lamb was to blame.

Nice and small patio, service a bit slow.. Visited on a Sun night, party of 2 and sat on their rooftop patio. It's 2 flights of stairs to get up there, so be prepared for that. You can't actually see much from the patio because the walls are so high, they have a few awnings to cover the sun/rain. The bench seats were kind of dirty, you could see people ass shapes based on the dirt patterns. My date ordered the Pappardelle which has no meat and I had the Pickeral. Both dishes were done well and delicious. It felt like it took a while to get the food, maybe 25min considering the restaurant was only half full it could have been a bit faster. It was very nice and quiet though so a great spot to actually have a conversation. I've dined here before for their tasting menu which was amazing.

Good food! The "swine and dine" was great and good sized portions. Took the a while to get our food (over an hour) but they were attentive

Globe Bistro by Dan Bodanis. Globe Bistro<br/><br/>Fine dining at a reasonable price, in a great setting, with wonderful service.<br/><br/>124 Danforth Avenue. Toronto. 416-466-2000<br/><br/>Reservations recommended.<br/><br/>Call for hours. Saturday and Sunday Brunch is highly recommended.<br/><br/>Is it possible for a restaurant to be too good for a City?<br/><br/>With a continental old school flair for exceptional service along the lines of the finest European 5 Star Restaurants, combined with a menu that runs the gamut from the sublime to the most palette grabbing stimuli, Globe Bistro is an outstanding choice for fine dining.<br/><br/>Located in a very chic area of Toronto’s “The Danforth,” from the outside Globe looks deceptively small and understated. Once you walk through the double doors, to be met with by a very polite, smiling, welcoming hostess, you realize that Globe is a restaurant where two could dine in the most intimate of settings, or a high tech, well-to-do company might rent the establishment for the evening to hold a large celebratory party, upon the day their IPO launches. <br/><br/>Figuratively and literally, Globe is really several major restaurants in one. There is a front section; a middle section near the kitchen which is set off to one side; there is a second floor balcony, for a select few; there is a row of private booths; and there are even more private rooms that can hold a nice family function, or a large party.<br/>Once again, please let me recommend that you make reservations in advance, and if out for a special, intimate celebration, ask for the corner table on the balcony, overlooking the restaurant. This could be one of the best restaurant tables in the City!<br/><br/>Now that you have been ushered to your table for two on the balcony, overlooking the restaurant, you will be met with by a very capable, experienced wait staff, that clearly understands the concept of creating an exceptional dining experience. They are always there, but never intrusive or over-bearing. When they make recommendations from the menu, they speak from first-hand experience on details of seasoning, presentation, taste, interplay/food combing with other courses, and the overall dining experience. <br/><br/>Rarely will a restaurant referral include the names of all the people that work so effortlessly as a team, in service of your ultimate dining experience, however, in the case of Globe Bistro, it is the people that make this restaurant worth the one hour drive from Oakville to the East side of Toronto! Tonight, the people that touched our dining experience deserve numerous accolades beyond a simple “thank you.” They include: Executive Managers: Ed Ho and Adrian Amara; Wait Staff: Edward, Elsie, and Stacy; and support staff: Kieram and Jake. <br/><br/>Never once will you have to ask to have your water or wine glass refilled, as they seem to have such seemingly insignificant details mastered. When presenting the various courses you will have chosen, wait staff have a dramatic flair for the artistry of grand presentation, and that only serves to heighten the anticipation of your dining experience. <br/><br/>The geography of food presentation, in terms of how and where each item on your plate is placed has a Zen-like quality at Globe Bistro. It was as if each plate was delivered, only after it sat through a photo shoot with a most discriminating photographer! Perfect placement was the beginning of the food service story, complimented by a middle section that spoke to the exact “right temperature,” finished by the grand climax of “exquisite taste.” throughout the meal!<br/><br/>What did we order? Truly, this does not matter! Why? You might also ask: How could anyone write a review of a restaurant, without including what was ordered? This may not make sense at first, however, having had the opportunity to order several appetizers, two main courses, dessert, drinks and coffee’s; all of which were outstanding in terms of every criteria of measurement, this reviewer feels it best to leave this one detail out of the review because there is a subtle confidence that grows within, as your dining experience progresses that says: “anything you order from the menu or the Chef’s Tasting will be outstanding.” This crescendo of culinary confidence climaxes with the consumption of your last morsel, and the best part is the bill! <br/><br/>How much will this cost you? The answer obviously depends on what you order, however, allow me to add the fact that, in comparison to other noted fine dining establishments, portions, quality, delivery, and ambiance, far exceed expectation, and your investment for a dining experience of this nature, is not only understated, it is a damn good deal! <br/><br/>Globe Bistro is a stand-alone, fine dining establishment for people who truly relish the Gestalt of exceptional cuisine, chic ambiance, learned and refined service, and a great night out!

Excellent Taster's Menu! The service was attentive and friendly, the decor is elegant and warm and the chef displayed superior skill that night using all fresh local ingredients from farm to table. Atlantic shrimp with sun dried tomato paste and chattily was fresh and flavourful. Braised short beef ribs was tender and very exquisite. The four different scoops of sorbet (the lavender one was fragrant and refreshing) were all each crowd pleasers. Highly recommended resto!

Good brunch. Had a nice brunch on Sunday recently.....the omelettes and waffle were very tasty. We also tried the smoked trout and it was delicious. The restaurant ambiance is nice, the food was good, the only thing I would mention is that we waited a really long time for the food to arrive. Other than that it was good!

Poor Service. I definitely can see why many people have had positive experiences at Globe. The atmosphere is nice, the restaurant looks great, and it's in an amazing area. In my experience, I found that the food was good, but not great. There was not one item that stood out, or that I would even remember. The service was average, up until the end of my meal, where my server turned an average experience into an awful one. I am not ever going back to Globe, and I regret giving them the business that I could have given to another restaurant that would have had more value towards treating their customers properly.

Loved it!. Two of us went there with a Groupon coupon (2pax, 5course for 69$); I had called in advance to check what the daily menu was: roast red pepper soup (I'm not usually a fan of soups but this one was so amazingly delicious!), salad with prosciutto and goat cheese (really tasty, although it was a bit funny to see it arrive in a HUGE plate, with the salad artistically laid out on one tiny side), black cod (fantastic) and our main, roast pork loin with some coffee rub, was excellent. I chose the cheese (good) and my partner chose the chocolate tort (amazing). The service was very nice and the overall experience was really impressive! With that coupon, it was an amazing deal!

Great Food - Lousy Service. When charging over $200 for dinner (for two), one expects a certain level of competence in the food and the wait staff. I thought the food at the Globe was excellent but the quality of service was very poor and overall made the whole experience disappointing. <br/><br/>First, although the place was practically empty, when we arrived we were seated by the upstairs cash register/utensil station. Because the place was not busy at the time we didn't notice the register behind its partition, but as the night progressed it became a major annoyance. Not only would the wait staff busily punch in their orders, etc. here, but they tended to gather around and bitch about their jobs while we were forced to listen. If the place was packed at the time we entered the restaurant, then fine, but why sit one of your first guests at what is obviously one of the worst tables in the house? <br/><br/>Overall, our waiter was semi-competent with carrying dishes but overall he was disinterested, moody and unhelpful. He was a major-downer on our entire evening. For instance, when I inquired as to what gave the hummus its lovely smoky flavour he simply replied: "I don't know". When I suggested he might ask the chef, he returned 15 minutes later and informed me that "the hummus was made from chickpeas." -- Well, DUH! Chickpeas in hummus who would have guessed!?! I dropped all inquires from there on in but you can imagine how things progressed from there. And for this I paid good money. <br/><br/>With some effort we did mange to enjoy the evening in spite of our waiter -- but, because of him, I don't think we would ever return. The fact that such ill suited staff are allowed to work at the Globe indicates to me that there are some managerial problems at the restaurant.

Excellent Service. My wife and I went for Summerlicious 2012. We shared all items and had Corn Chowder and Elk Chorizo to start. The chowder was well seasoned and creamy and the elk chorizo had really nice texture. For the main we had Baked Perch and Jerked Chicken Leg. The chicken was tender and cooked perfectly with a really good jerk favouring. The baked perch was a bit bland but they seemed to be receptive to the feedback. The dessert was a perfect ending to the meal. We had the eton mess with fresh berries and crunchy meringue. The chocolate espresso brownie was savoury and decadent end the the meal.<br/><br/>Everything was delicious and overall it was a nice fresh and clean meal. The presentation was good for all plates. We would definitely return.
Me. Myself. And Food.
Really wanted to love it, but.... "Meh"<br/><br/>That's the exact word I would use to describe my experience at Globe Bistro. It really pains me to say this because I have been itching to indulge in what they call a "unique local food experience" for months. But that experience fell short relative to my high expectations. The local aspect is what landed Globe a spot on my hit list. I just hoped that it would come with the whole package.<br/><br/>We took advantage of the Groupon deal ($69 for a 5-course tasting menu for two) but oddly I still felt as though I was ripped off. It was partly because of the "big plate/small portion" syndrome, all while being short on flavour. A formula that doesn't produce lasting impressions when I'm at the table.<br/><br/>The Service: meh. <br/><br/>It started off on the right foot when I called to reserve and request a paleo-friendly meal. They were graciously willing to accommodate and I thank them for that.<br/><br/>It was once we were situated at our cozy table that the service faltered. Our main server just didn't deliver on the high-end experience. She was dismissive and looked as though it was a struggle to smile. I think her name was "Debbie Downer".<br/><br/>On a positive note, the sequencing and timing was perfect: with less than 5 minutes between each course, and glasses proactively topped up. (Although, it was 10pm and we were one of three tables left, which may have worked in our favour).<br/><br/>Our Order: meh<br/><br/>Two of us took advantage of the Groupon, and my sister-in-law went with the a la carte menu. Remember, all of my meals were tweaked to exclude dairy, grains and gluten so it's not fair for me to judge. Nor is it fair to the chef, who has to deliver his vision while forced to omit key ingredients. That's why I relied on the opinions of my company...and their response was a unanimous "meh". Then again, service is a huge part of the experience. So when the service is "meh", the meal is "meh".<br/><br/>Starter: Maple Salt Cured Rainbow Trout ($11) - my sister-in-law and I shared this appetizer to hold us over until our cousin arrived. Smoked salmon and the like are hard to screw up, and Globe's version was tasty as expected. The contrasting flavours of the sweet cranberries next the the salty trout were a nice touch. I would have just liked to see more trout :)<br/><br/><br/><br/>5-Course Tasting Menu:<br/><br/>1. Soup - Northern woods mushroom purée, sherry, truffle cream, red fife croutons<br/><br/>On a blistering cold winter day, this is exactly how I would have liked the meal to start - with a warm, creamy and cozy soup. I'm a mushroom fanatic so this had my taste buds singing, even without the cream and croutons which were omitted per my Paleo diet restrictions. <br/><br/> 2. Salad - Salt roasted celeriac, tobacco poached pear, celeryhearts, maple creme fraiche, sherry foie gras vinaigrette<br/><br/>The only wow factor here was the presentation. With or without the dressing, the consensus was that this salad left much to be desired. The components were interesting and unique, but they didn't come together to leave an impression. As one of the girls put it: "this is the lamest salad I've ever had".<br/><br/><br/><br/>3. Fish - Smoked haddock croquette, espellete aoli, pea shoot salad<br/><br/>My food envy kicked in as soon as I saw this land across the table. The girls were beaming with delight at their first bite. It was quite painful to watch.<br/><br/><br/><br/>Paleo version: Rainbow trout - While the girls continued to fight for the mini croquette on massive plate, I tried to enjoy my tiny Paleo friendly fish course. I'm sure it was wonderful, but I was too distracted by the commotion across the table.<br/><br/><br/><br/>4. Main - Bradford bay chicken supreme, roasted cauliflower, blackmquinoa, walnut purée, coriander lemon cumin jus<br/><br/>Below is the non-Paleo version with quinoa. I had a chance to sample the roasted cauliflower (which as you know, I am a fan of) but the chicken itself was...how do I put this..."meh". The flavour could have been more impressive perhaps. I'm not a chef, so I really have no idea what I'm talking about. As a consumer and a foodie though, I can say that I've had better chicken. Sorry Globe.<br/><br/><br/><br/>Paleo version: Chicken with broccoli. I was pleased to see my chicken on a pile of bright green broccoli (it made up for the salad which had little substance). I understand the chef had limitations, but I would still expect to see something a little more interesting and unique. In fact, my dinners at home don't look much different from this.<br/><br/><br/><br/>Side: Broccoli - Instead of the anticipated non-Paleo dessert options, I decided to order a side of veggies early in the meal. If only I had known that the chicken was also paired with the green vegetable. Thankfully, you can never have enough broccoli!<br/><br/><br/><br/>5. Cheese - Torta, OntStilton, Lankaster, chardonnay chevre with apricot jam and candied walnuts OR Dessert - Dulcede leche mousse napoleon, wild Ontario blue berry preserve, citrus candy<br/><br/>I begrudgingly donated my cheese platter to my sister-in-law, yet her indifference about the dish eased my pain.<br/><br/><br/><br/>Our waitress must have noticed me sulking with my arms crossed while the girls nibble at their cheese. She offered me a scoop of blueberry sorbet (dairy and gluten free, but not sugar-free I'm sure). I ate the tiny serving because it was in front of me, but it was hardly worth the calories.<br/><br/><br/><br/>The Damage: $180 (plus tip). Without the Groupon, it would have been closer to $230. Includes a bottle of house wine ($39) which was just OK...or meh. (I'm getting carried away with the "meh", sorry).<br/><br/>You should go if:<br/>•You want to support local eating establishments<br/>•You have low expectations, a small appetite and a fat wallet

Surprisingly disappointing. Party of six Thanksgiving weekend. All server industry professionals and the easiest going, fun loving table to serve. Great table in an elevated, private area. The aesthetics of Globes dining room is modern and lovely. <br/>Our servers service however left greater to be desired. She bounced back and forth from being cheery to belittling to rude. Zero table side romance.<br/>The food disappointed as well. I don't mind sparse plates when the flavor is vibrant. This was not the case. Points for presentation on every dish we had, which was a good 85% of the menu as we're the ravenous sort but not enough NOM NOM moments to secure the decision to dine there again. Save your pennies for dinner at Campagnolo on Dundas or Foxley on Ossington where both the food and service is outstanding.

Simply not good.. We were excited to try globe because it consistently seems to get good reviews. Unfortunately i was very disappointed. We went for lunch with a party of 7. Service was extremely slow (with our meals taking nearly an hour to arrive with no explanation). To add insult to injury, the restaurant was nearly empty and we had been given an earlier reservation than we had requested. Portions ranged from the absurdly huge (burger) to the barely-there (pickeral). This left some diners feeling stuffed while others left starving. While I am absolutely no stranger to "fine dining portions," a word from the waiter would have been nice when your main's fish portion is approximately 3/4 the size of a deck of cards and floats atop a broth with nary a carb in site. My steak from the steak frites had a nice crust and was cooked to the requisite medium rare but accompanying arugula was not dressed and limp fries were missing their curds (again, no explanation). While their brunch looks interesting and has received very good reviews, I will not be going back any time soon. Disappointing.

Bistro means "quickly" in Russian, and that's exactly how they served our Summerlicious dinner. Tasteful, artistic decor and courteous service but can't say much about food. Portions were small, you literally feel hungry 15 min after you are out. My gazpacho was bitter - I'm not sure whether that was the intent. Steaks were undercooked, desserts were primitive. Their pana cota tasted like sour cream with sugar. Way to expensive.

Half full half empty. Four of us went to the Globe for dinner on Monday evening. My elk charcuterie appetizer was terrific, and two others were also good. The disappointment was the salad which seemed to have a dressing comprised mostly of water. For main courses, my duck was excellent and my friend's elk was terrific. But, our friend's halibut was very dry, and my wife's sweetbreads were way overdone. At those prices, such disappointments are unacceptable. I wouldn't go back.

Globe Bistro is an established restaurant in Greektown that offers a menu focused on local ingredients. Although I had made reservations during summerlicious, only myself and one other person ordered off the set menu. Everyone else opted for the Swine and Dine.

The composed salad course was one of my favourites of the night. Rather than the typical bed of lettuce, the salad’s base was a thick tomato purée. Sprinkled over top were sweet spring peas, crunchy pea pods, sweet heirloom cherry tomatoes and a crumbly goat cheese. It was another dish that expertly combined different textures and flavours without losing the natural essence of the ingredients themselves.

Looking at the menu, we went with high expectations. Location is great, it's just a few steps from Boardview station.  We love the look of this restaurant with sleek and modern deco.  There are three floors in the restaurant with four different dining areas. First floor - bar & front, formal dining room in the back Second floor - looked like a private party area Third floor - rooftop patio (this is where we sat) with bar We immediately fell in love with the rooftop patio! With it's own bar up there it looked like a great place to go for food and drinks in the summer.  They had an extensive wine list, which I appreciated.  Also, note that that they have 1/2 PRICE WINE BOTTLES on Sundays! For appetizers, we got the Pork Chorizo and Smoked Char Croqu

The contemporary and elaborate Globe Bistro feels misplaced in pre-Hellenic Danforth (it is situated on Bloor right across the Don Valley). From the bare and cold bar room where personae non gratae are seated (i.e. thrifty summerlicious mal-tippers) I stared into the lavish dining hall, decorated with exposed wood flooring, chandeliers and colossal pieces of modern art. How such a pompous restaurant could call itself a bistro is beyond me. The appetizer and dessert looked and sounded more interesting than it tasted. The Chorizo’s flavours were muted and the result was a poorly textured sausage; Chantilly is just another word for whipped cream and I couldn’t taste the espresso. Indeed, the meal was saved by the Chicken. It was a quartet of sour (lime relish), salty (collards), sweet (roasted sweet potatoes) and umami (chicken), each with its own solos and all together perfectly balanced.<br/>

Upon arrival, they took our coats and seated us. They offer seating on 2 levels and in a private room. This place was beautifully designed and earth friendly. The bathroom even had real hand towels! Not to mention, the kitchen is centrally located which made the entire place smell fantastic.   Our server, Stacy, was fantastic. My dad can be a bit of a  handfull  in an out- of- work- stand- up- comedian kind of way. He made friends with the table beside us as well. Poor couple! They were a good sport about it (Thank God!). Stacy was fun and attentive. Our glasses were kept full and our plates cleared. It's

Everything was really excellent, decadent, and beautifully plated. It's always funny how you can spot who else is only at such a fancy restaurant because it's Winterlicious!

We expected at least some gamey flavour but it was a really clean tasting meat. Didn’t announce itself like beef would....surprisingly subtle, but now we can say we tried elk!

The duck confit leg was absolutely amazing with the melted cheddar. The meat was really tender and juicy and I could easily tear the meat out with a fork - I would then dip it in the red wine thyme syrup before taking a bite.

Great cooking is all about balance, and if Globe could just work on simplifying some of their dishes (like the crab starter) and making others slightly more complicated (like the Elk main) and identify where they draw the line on being local, they’d have nothing stopping them.

The meal was excellent and extremely satisfying. The turkey was juicy and tender, and the gnocchi was super tasty and comforting. On top of that, both desserts were fantastic!

Another Winterlicious meal, this time at Globe Bistro on Danforth. They started off with really fresh bread with hummus and butter. Someone else tried the salad: Organic spinach, frisee, walnuts, green apple, ermite blue dressing. Ki

Since we travel up to Toronto fairly often, people often ask us what we think about Canadian cuisine. More specifically, they want to know what is Canadian cuisine. We've talked about poutine and Timbits , but we think the best way to explain local cuisin
Are You Gonna Eat That
The restaurant itself is chic and cleverly redesigned, incorporating pieces of the structure’s former lives. Diners tread on restored hardwood floors from the lanes of a former bowling alley and ascend past nooks and multiple levels left from the theatre

Winter-freaking-licious! One of the best food festivals around has brought me to Globe. My Aunt and I searched the menus and based our decision on one item on their menu, a Dutch dessert called Speculaas. Yes, the reviews were good, but no one else offered Speculaas. <br/><br/>Upon arrival, they took our coats and seated us. They offer seating on 2 levels and in a private room. This place was beautifully designed and earth friendly. The bathroom even had real hand towels! Not to mention, the kitchen is centrally located which made the entire place smell fantastic. <br/><br/>Our server, Stacy, was fantastic. My dad can be a bit of a handfull in an out-of-work-stand-up-comedian kind of way. He made friends with the table beside us as well. Poor couple! They were a good sport about it(Thank God!). Stacy was fun and attentive. Our glasses were kept full and our plates cleared. It's always nice to have a server that is fun yet professional. Stacy was awesome. <br/><br/>We got a chance to meet the Chef and ask him why he made the Speculaas. He's Dutch, like us, and wanted to give some Dutch flavour to the menu. He knew we'd be tough critics about it, so he said he'd come by after dessert for the verdict. <br/><br/>First course was the Smoked Haddock Croquette, another Dutch treat! It was crisp and fresh and the mustard aioli cut through the intense smoky flavour. It was lovely. My Aunt chose the Duck Liver Parfait. She said the liver had the perfect texture. The elderberry preserves and brioche made it divine. In addition to the Winterlicious apps, we also tried the Steak Tartare. This was a first for me. It was seasoned well. I expected the texture to be unpleasant, but it was actually an enjoyable dish. Pleasant surprise! <br/><br/>Next was the main course. I had the Rosemary & Garlic Braised Ontario Lamb Shoulder. I love food I don't have to chew. The lamp was so tender, it fell off the bone. I literally pulled it apart with my fork and let it melt in my mouth. Fantastic! My dad chose the Roasted Perth County Pork Loin and my Aunt went with the Mushroom Tagliatelle. By the time, I had enjoyed some of the lamb and veggies, my father's plate was clean. The pork loin had been slow roasted and the chick pea masala was a nice touch. My Aunt loves pasta and this was no exception. A good helping of fresh pasta piled with local mushrooms and topped with parsley and celeriac puree. What a meal! <br/><br/>Dessert time. *cracks knuckles* It's time to get down to business. The Speculaas had arrived. We could smell the cinnamon scents of the dessert we know and love. Well, this definitely passed the test. If you've never had it before, it's a dessert square with flavours of gingerbread and cinnamon. He nailed it. We reminisced about my Oma and compared it to hers. Great job! <br/><br/>The Chef returned to see what we thought. Two thumbs up! It was just like Oma used to make and we were so pleased with his recipe. He said he'd been working on it and we were glad he did. <br/><br/>I'm a chocolate person. So, we also tried the Dark Chocolate Custard. Rich, rich, rich! The mixture of the custard with the hazelnut merengue and whipped cream was absolutely to die for. <br/><br/>What a great experience. Right from start to finish, it was a memorable night. I'd absolutely come back. Knowing it's farm-to-table makes it even better.
