Review Golden Thai Restaurant - Toronto

Joshua B
Always wanted to try this place out as I’ve walked by many times over the years. Food was wonderful and done very authentic. I’ve been to Thailand before and can contest to that. Price is great and service is fast and good. Food is served in kinda of a tapa style so sharing is encouraged.

The interiors of this restaurant seemed ancient, dull, drab and almost musty. So it was with some trepidation we sat down for dinner at this place as part of a celebration. The crowd inside however indicated to us that this must be a good place despite its looks. And we were not disappointed. They seemed to be a bit short staffed as we were attended to a tad late. But after the server approached us, it was all good going forward. Got some good Sapporo beer to whet our thirst. The appetizers were great and the entree selection good. The biggest kicker of them all was the portion size. Each dish could easily be shared by 2 people, unless you had a gargantuan appetite. The food was well prepared, well presented and tickled the taste bud. But in terms of its spice level, this place was not "truly authentic Thai". Clearly the spice levels were diluted to cater to the Canadian palate. If you want the authentic taste of spicy Thai food, please do ask for the hot sauce which they give you in good quantity. Adding the sauce to the food made a world of difference to spice lovers like us. All in all a great place to eat in.......now if only they redid the interiors

The hostess was very nice and helpful. The waiters seemed too in a hurry(even the place was not very busy) and they were too uptight. We had chicken pad thai which wasn’t great. Not much veggies, not much chicken. The sauce used was not much of a pad thai taste, was more of sweet and sour! I had pad thai before and this wasn’t a good one!

Great restaurant with amazing service, and for us personally, amazing vegetarian choice dishes. We ordered their Vegetarian Course for 2, and we were even able to swap out some dishes for ones we liked from the menu (Grilled Eggplant was amazing). Parking, you are better off parking at 209 Victoria Street, which is a 5 min walk to the restaurant and the weekend cost was $8 for about 5-6 hours.

Ordered thai for take out. Service and pickup was seamless and I must say their staff is very friendly and helpful. We ordered thai red curry, spicy eggplant and vegetable fried rice. Also added the mango and lychee salad which was very delicious.

Really affordable food, but the service was lacking. The highlight was definitely the Tom Yam Goong soup, be sure to order it if you like sweet-spicy flavours. The rest of the food was above average. The only dish I didn't enjoy was the beef curry, which I found to be too runny and salty.

Loved the place, the food and the service. We were a group of 10 people and thoroughly enjoyed the great taste. Good options for both Vegetarians and Non-Vegetarians. Portions are not large. I would recommend to all.

How is the food? The food is really average, some below average. How is the service? for large group of people, servers get confused a little and start messing up the order. but other than that they are okay. also one of the times they gave a hard time to split the bill. Would I recommend? No, not worth the visit. There are better thai restaurant around. try PAI.

Consistently delicious Thai food. Absolutely the best Tom kha gai around.

Nice ambiance, good service and well presented. While overall quite good, perhaps our selection of dishes left us feeling a second visit is needed to decide if it will be a regular destination or not. Definitely worth trying.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Thai lunch here. Everything was excellent: Food, service, quantity, quality, authenticity. I miss good Thai, but this is one of the best I've had. While it was a bit dark and somewhat stark in the dining room, it didn't detract from the goodness of the food.<br/><br/>Parking: NA. Service: 5/5. Presentation: 4/5. Ambience: 3/5. Had dinner tonite at this place. Went with lot of expectations but it did not live upto it. The.ambience was average. Food was also just ok. Service was staff was though good. We ordered a platter, green curry and pad thai noodles.

Pretty tasty food, great decor, excellent service. This restaurant is a great place for vegetarians too, and many dishes can be made vegetarian if not already. Would recommend!

Invited by recommendations and reviews...<br/>Location is perfect, ambience does remind of Thailand for sure, food is decent, service is really nice<br/><br/>We ordered shrimps for starters. Chewy, hard to bite. Not a great decision. <br/><br/>Then we ordered Pad Thai and beef with vegetables. Pad Thai was decent. <br/>Bit surprised with very thin pasta, not much of nuts and other extras you get while in Thailand or different Thai restaurants. Taste was good though and lots of pasta which we didn’t like. <br/><br/>Beef with vegetables. Very good dish, beef was so soft, tasted very good. Not much variety on vegetables for me but it’s ok, I would order again. <br/><br/>I won’t be back. It’s not it was so bad, it was ok. When traveling, I search for best dining locations for us for next visit. This has not been one. I keep searching. <br/><br/>

I've been here a couple times, and the experience has gone downhill. The last time I did take out, the portions were very skimpy. Calamari had about 7 rings in it, red curry shrimp had barely any sauce, etc. I may be back for dine-in, but not take-out.

This is a great spot, been coming here for years. The soups are good, spring rolls great, the cashew chicken is great and work getting, Me Krob is good too and like someone else mentioned sticky rice and mangoes for dessert... Good spot!
David Cefai
Definitely one of the best Thai food restaurants in Toronto. Steak and lobster dishes are fantastic. So is the appetizer platter., pad Thai and chicken green curry Great spring rolls.
Avneet Kaur Khaira
Authentic Thai food. Ambience is very soothing. Customer service is awesome. One thing to try if you are here is sticky rice with mangoes. A different kind of a dessert.

The restaurant, from what my friends tell me, has been there forever - so they must be doing something right..... We ordered the tom yum goong, which ends up giving us 4 bowls - it's a huge portion for $8+. Also got the mee krob - never had it before, so can't really compare.. it was alright as a dish. Don't get the Thai iced teas because they're not. It's like jasmine tea with milk, which tasted like how conditioner would taste - it's too fragrant and just wrong. The yam won sen (glass noodles) were OK as well - I've had better elsewhere.. The shrimp curry as well was only OK - the coconut flavour really dominates the dish and the curry flavour isn't quite there. We ended the meal with 3 ice creams - mango, lychee and coconut. I don't know why - but the ice creams seem to have salt in them... We were asking ourselves : do they churn their own ice creams and have thus added too much salt in it to bring out the flavour? All in all, an OK dinner...

Traditional Thai culture ambience inside the restaurant. Hospitality was amazing what they are known for. We tried veg spring roll in starters and steamed rice with red curry only veg curry and taste of food was just yummy. I found it reasonably priced too.

The atmosphere, service and food were exceptional. We ordered from the sharing menu for two or more, we had the orchid classic and the golden classic. There was enough food to feed 4 people with lots of leftovers which we gladly took home. We will be back!

I ordered their seafood pad thai and I couldn't really finish it. The 'seafood' was just a couple of calamari rings, two and a half to be exact, and 1 shrimp (as pictured above). The sauce for the pad thai was also super ketchup-y which I did not enjoy. We also ordered Thai Iced Tea, which did not taste like the normal Thai Iced Tea I've had from other places. It had some jasmine taste to it and my friend said that it tasted like dishwasher soap. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience and I don't think I will be back.

I came here for dinner after work, and it was disappointing to say the least. I ordered their seafood pad thai and I couldn't really finish it. Must-try. Could not get enough of the pad thai. SO GOOD. Left so full and happy :) The coconut shrimp was also delicious. Good atmosphere but I was near the music speakers in the corner and it was a bit loud. But it is still the best Thai restaurant I think I have been to!

A Beautiful Range of Flavors. This place was around the block from our hotel on a recent stay in Toronto. My girlfriend and I are big fans of Thai food so we had to go. Iniside of the restaurant is very nice with great looking decor and very nicely setup tables. We opted to get one of the dinner for two options that gives you multiple courses. Everything was fresh and wonderfully prepared. We had more than enough food from which to satisfy our appetites. The range of flavors and textures far exceeded what we are used to for Thai food from our home in the States. We got two mixed drinks and those really topped things off for us. Service was excellent in every way. Next time we are in Toronto, we will definitely be back!

Great food! Great service!. I love this place! The decor itself is beautiful/romantic and the service is excellent. I love their Rum Fried Bananas! Definitley a must try!, as it's very authentic and fresh!

Chris the bartender???. I've been going to Golden Thai since 10 years now, every 2-3 months...I NEVER had a problem and the food is fantastic. We did a staff party there as well a few years ago...but a staff member (Chris the bartender) was VERY rude to me last night...<br/><br/>Last night, around 8pm, my husband and I went to the Golden Thai and we took food to go. We spent 50$ for 4 items. I’m from Quebec, so I do have an accent so Chris (if it is his real name!), the bartender, refused to serve me a beer while I was waiting because he thought that I was intoxicated which I was NOT and he told me that I’ve been drinking all day long (it’s nice to know that someone was with me ALL day long to check on me??!!). But he served a gin and tonic to my husband without asking him any questions (Chris the bartender doesn’t know how many cocktails my husband had during the day). When I asked him to talk to the manager, he told me that HE was the manager, which I doubt, but who knows, I was VERY drunk...<br/><br/>Anyways, Chris the bartender/manager was VERY rude and he talked to me like I was a nobody...wow!!! Nice way to treat your clientele Chris!!! And congrats, he is the 1st person to make a bad reputation to the Golden Thai. He didn’t get any tip, too bad for him since I always tip 20% because I am SOOOO DRUNK all the times

Good food, quick kitchen. We were hesitant about eating here based on the reviews but were really in the mood for Thai so we took the chance. It was a Wednesday night which might account for the kitchen being if anything a little quick (our main dishes arrived before we were done with our starters). The service was cordial and we never felt rushed.<br/><br/>The cool rolls were excellent as was the golden Thai chicken.
KS1985
Okay food, awful service. First off, no compliants about the food. It's pretty average for Thai albeit slightly more expensive than some comparable spots though the location warrants it. The place doesn't hold a candle to Khoa San Road's quality.<br/><br/>On to the service - absolutely brutal. Six of us placed our order and only four came out. Four of us actually finished our meals and the waiter brought the bill, and we had to again remind him that our friends haven't received their food yet (it took three reminders and 40 minutes for their food, which they ended up taking to go). He never apologized, and actually got another to serve us after. There were other incompetences that night, but I've reach my iPad typing threshold.

Excellent first impression.. Today was our first time at Golden Thai and we were very impressed with the warm response we received from the staff. We ordered several types of dishes ranging from the lamb curry to the tamarind scallops and were thrilled by each one. You could tell everything was fresh and carefully prepared. The tom yam soup and mango salad were a great start to the meal. Don't be afraid to try their cocktails also. We enjoyed the sarong sarong drink. Great atmosphere, incredible food, friendly staff.........what more could you ask for? We'll be back for sure.

Disappointing. We went on a Wednesday night; service was very fast, but almost too fast, no time to enjoy the ambiance/company,<br/><br/>We ordered the veggie cold rolls (nearly 7 dollars for 3). Upon picking one up, it had a chicken-like substance inside (looked like chewed gum; not very appetizing). We were told it was 'gluten'; nowhere did it appear on the menu, and I don't eat gluten, so I had to messily pick it out with my fingers. The servers refused to take it back as they are 'premade'...<br/><br/>I ordered one of my favorite thai dishes Thai Eggplant with Basil. It was extremely sub-par, and I had not ordered any rice to go with it (the server hadn't asked though...). <br/><br/>Overall it was a disappointing experience and I will not to be returning.

Birthday Dinner - Great Place!. Went here for dinner after reading reviews on Urbanspoon, and was very impressed. The atmosphere was a bit formal for my liking but very nice decor and tables. We had fresh made shrimp chips with the peanut thai sauce, it was so delicious and quite a large portion, almost ruined my appetite as I could not stop gorging on them.<br/><br/>For dinner I had Phad Thai, and my date had Shrimp Curry. Both were excellent, and different from any other Phad Thai I have had. We made reservations for 6:30 on a Saturday and it wasn't that full, but by around 7:30 there wasn't a single empty table.
Nala2012
Great food, okay service. I went here for my birthday with a group of about 16 people - The food was great and well priced!!! The only thing I didnt like was the service. The waitors werent as nice and they wouldnt give us seperate bills which then ended up being a very confusing process of paying.

I recently dined at Golden Thai and my experience was rather unpleasant. For my meal I ordered the "Spicy Eggplant". There were several issues I had with this dish, the first being that it was not at all spicy. I let that slide only to discover the tofu in the dish had small patches of what appeared to be green mold. Upon informing the server of my disappointment with the dish he made excuses rather than taking the item (of which I only had a few bites) off the bill as would be expected. Needless to say, I would not recommend this restaurant as both the food and service was subpar and very underwhelming.
Petra.p
Very dissapointed with the food and service. Ordered veg red curry, which included pineapple without my knowledge, the taste was ok, had better in cheaper and less popular restaurants, when dinner was done and we didnt want anything else waiter slammed the bill on our table. When asked to split the bill the hostess said flatly no and informed us that we should calculate the difference ourselves and tell her. Very rude! Never coming back again!

Great food and service. The service was attentive, prompt, friendly and fast. The food was great. I am pretty fussy when it comes to Thai food, but this place met my standard.

Green mango salad was absolutely just great... Green cury hummmm.... Both dish perfect thai food, a mix of flavor and taste only available in autentic thai food... Will go again!

Consistently wonderful service (many places could learn from here). Solid food, ambiance reminds me of Bangkok.

Love this place! Stumbled upon it a number of years back and it has been my Toronto go to ever since! Delicious! Look forward to it every time I'm in town! The must order is anyone of the Thai Classic menus, depending on which colleague(s) I go with it's either the orchid or golden classic, both are a sure bet! Nothing but praise for this restaurant, only wish it were in Vancouver so I could go more often ;-)

Great first experience. With all the great reviews online, I've been wanting to try this place out for awhile now... and it didn't disappoint! For the atmosphere, location and just the type of restaurant it is, the price is very reasonable - especially when food courts nowadays are an easy $10 a dish! The portions are a fair amount and service was fast and friendly! The servers weren't too in your face, but still came enough to ensure we weren't in need of anything. (One guy actually waited a step away from our table until I finished my sentence in my conversation before "interrupting" to take my empty plate away!)<br/><br/>Personally, my friend's dish (the Phad Thai) wasn't as good as my Chicken Curry, but it was still very flavorful, with a good texture on the noodles (I don't personally like sticky phad thai noodles, which I've had before).<br/><br/>We went on a Saturday evening before hitting an event, so the timing was perfect. The place started filing up around the time we got our food, which was about 7-7:30ish.<br/><br/>Will definitely come back with an appetite.

Happy Birthday Dinner!. I found this restaurant online, and since I love Thai food, I thought this would be a great choice fo my birthday dinner. I was 3000 percent right! It was marvellous. It was a Saturday night, so we made reservations for 8:00 and our table was ready and waiting for us at 7:40.<br/>I ordered the hot spring rolls to start- delicious, Pad Thai, it was great, the rest of my part ordered the Cashew Chicken- great, Thai Spicy Noodles- great but VERY spicy! and Thai Steak- great again! <br/>They brought me over deepfried bananas with a sparkler for my birthday on the house. It was a marvellous night, and very close to the Holiday Inn Express too! Took us 2 minutes to walk. I would reccommend this place to any and everyone. Brilliant!!

Will definitely be back!. My boyfriend and I could not decide on a place to eat for dinner in Toronto-so many places are overpriced and do not provide what they promise. On my many travels into the city I had always passed Golden Thai and have always wanted to go there as I love thai food and the decor of the place was classy and beautiful. We decided to try it last night and the both of us were very pleased (and we do tend to be extremely picky!) We received probably the best service I have received in a very long time, they were extremely polite, efficient and prompt with everything. We ordered the Golden Classic, which for just $28 a person, you get a ridiculous amount of food, we could barely finish it! Everything tasted great, and we will definitely recommend this restaurant and will obviously be returning!

Chose the set menu Golden Classic. Tonnes of food , highlights were the crispy spring rolls and the basil beef. Would like to try the Green Curry on my next visit.
Lemontang
I'd go back!. I can't comment on the authenticity of the food, but I thought it tasted good (great sharing plates to get a lot of variety), the price was right, and the service was great! Very friendly staff and overall was a lovely experience.

This is Thai, not Chinese food. I am Chinese and I grow up eating authenic northern and southern Chinese food. This is not southern Chinese food to the least. There is a shadow of northern Chinese food here, but considering the immigration due to wars, natural disasters (like drought) and political trumoil (in Tibet) in the region over the last 1,000 years, I won't be surprised that authenic Thai food has a shadow of Chinese cuisine within. There is significant cross-influence among the many countries in SE Asia.<br/><br/>I like the food here: tasty and using real Thai spice (I can tell they have a good spice tray). Love the Thai Spicy Noodle, if you can take the heat. Cool rolls were wonderful.
LazyCityGirl
Food was good but not Thai food.... Ok I clicked "I Liked It.."<br/><br/>The ambiance was nice. Food relatively tasty but... none of the items that we had when we ordered orchid combo (or something like that) tasted like thai food. Don't get me wrong... they were quite tasty (well a bit tooo sweet I must say). It was tasty chinese food?<br/><br/>I would go again but not when I want authentic Thai food...

Went there again this past Wednesday. Consistent food, good atmosphere. Have been going there for over 15 years and it's still great!

Been here twice and always looking forward to returning- lunch specials are an awesome deal!

You want great food and excellent service? Then check out Golden Thai! Best Thai restaurant east of Van! 4.5 stars! Thx Jimmy!
Peter Visima
Lunch specials. You can't beat Golden Thai for a fast and inexpensive lunch. They have the lunch special with 1, 2, or 3 choices with a spring roll.
JA
I officially love Thai food. This place has decent service. I am usually not a fan of Thai food however I had the garlic pork and it was delicious! I would recommend this to anyone. If you like this restaurant you should try Salad King! I personally think Salad King serves the best food at an affordable price downtown.
Jaly100
Great red curry. Highly recommended
Skipper James
Best Pad Thai I've tried. Excellent service and great food. I am never disappointed with their Pad Thai or Lemon Shrimp soup. If you're hungry enough, definitely go for their prix fixe combos - but be warned, it's a lot of food.
Sweetsauce Delicious
Best Thai in Toronto!. Until today, the best Thai food I had ever had was on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our meal at Golden Thai was a beautiful mouth-body experience from start to finish. The flavors were bold and fresh. Their coconut iced cream is the best I have ever had. I recommend having it with the banana fritters for dessert. Go hungry and eat a lot. We asked for it hot and we got it. We relished every bite.
Doll
Lovely place. I've been here a couple time with the bf and so far I love it. He on the other hand says the pad thai is too much on the sweet side but I like it. We've had other dishes and all were satisfying. The atmosphere is lovely; candle light, dim and very intimate feeling. A place we will visit again.
Basil Michaels
The service and ambience are very good. Unfortunately, the food was unimpressive to poor. Appetizers acceptable, main courses bordered on inedible.
Mirry
Enh .... I'm not sure why this place gets rave reviews. Their food reminds me of cheap Chinese food covered in way too much corn starch slurry. I've had better Thai food, and it was just down the street from Golden Thai.
Captain Napkin
Two Thumbs Up. It took me a few tries to convince my new husband to eat here. It was very close to our hotel...maybe so close we were tempted to overlook it for some hard to find trendy spot. But we kept walking past it and with each pass by I looked more closely at the menu, and noticed the white table cloths, and brisk business it seemed to do. We are both happy we walked in for dinner, as the food and service were superb. The menu is extensive, as one would expect of a Thai restaurant, and we sampled quite a bit from it, The hot and sour soup for two could have fed 4, and was delicious, as were the spring rolls. My curry seafood was also spot on good, as was my husband's chicken entree. We shared and liked each other's choices. Prices were very fair considering it is a white tablecloth restaurant worthy of a special occasion dinner. Our meals each cost about $25 pre tax. They also have a full bar and mix a great drink!
Oilymouth
Pricey but good. There are not many Thai restaurants in Downtown Toronto I would call tasty. Golden Thai was tasty.<br/><br/>I also like to "pretend" and act like some kind of food critic and order the most basic/famous item on the menu - the Tom Yum Goong. Though the result (I felt) was adequate, the rest of the food was still better than any Thai restaurant I have tried downtown.
Lancerrr
Far from authentic. Romantic candle-lit dining room. Warm, friendly staff. Too bad they don't serve any Thai food. More like generic Chinese food with added coconut milk and peanut butter, served up at twice the price.
Gggast
Very good. One of the best if not the best thai in Toronto. At least in terms of nicer upscale type thai restaurants.
Paul Arnhold
Solid Thai Fare. I had takeout spring rolls (non-fried) and Pad Thai, and I'd rate the food good. Not a big fan of the spring roll sauce, as I'm used to peanut sauce, but that was really the only downside.
D.Boucher
Great experience. We recently had an overnight stay in Toronto and decided to look up a few restaurants to try on Urbanspoon in the areas we'd be near. Golden Thai was one of those restaurants. We ordered the Orchid special for two. We enjoyed every dish in the meal! Really enjoyed our dinner, would recommend it to others.
Jim Dowson
Not the best Thai food we have had, but acceptable. The service was good, and the decor was nice.
YVR Taster
Worst thai and most expensive. This was a very bad and expensive Thai food experiences I have ever had. I suggest the owner come to Vancouver for some lessons in running a quality kitchen.
Joyce
I've been looking for a really good Thai restaurant. Here's one that has been around for years
Vernon Chang (aka MoVernie)
We went to Golden Thai for lunch. Love it! Love everything. Love the authentic taste, the variety of food items on the menu, great service, great price and the food served on time (which is key especially if you have an hour or less of your lunch time).<br/><br/>How many times have I said "I love this place"? LOL. Did I mentioned that I love the decor and the table setting of this place as well? The moment we stepped in, I felt like I was in Thailand. The wallpaper, the accessories and the decorations, all of them gave you that vibe.<br/>We started off with an appetizer called the shrimp chips. It's a big piece of shrimp chips that came with tasty satay sauce. The sauce isn't super spicy so most of you can give it a try. The texture is nice, it's not too watery nor too sticky. I love it!<br/><br/>Then we ordered the lunch specials. Basically, the lunch special allows you to order one item, two items or 3 items of a list of food items you can choose from. The lists goes from curry chicken, beef, spicy calamari, butterfly shrimps, some other vegetables items. There are at least 8-10 items that you can choose from.<br/><br/>I opted for spicy calamari and butterfly shrimps. Again, spicy calamari gave it a nice flavour but most people can handle the spice. I highly recommend the butterfly shrimp. Basically it's like a crispy wonton that wrapped around the seared shrimp, giving it a variety of textures. It's a MUST try! (see photos below)<br/><br/>In addition to the items of food you chose, it also came with a spring roll, salad with a nice dressing, along with noodles and fried rice. All of these items for $8.95 + tax (for two items). With great plate proportion and great price, it filled up my stomach. I enjoyed it! Highly recommend this place, especially a great place to have lunch with your co-workers or clients' meetings.<br/><br/>MoVernie vs Food Ratings:<br/><br/>Food Taste: 9/10<br/><br/>Plate Presentation: 7/10<br/><br/>Venue Decoration: 8.5/10<br/><br/>Service: 9/10<br/><br/>Price for the Buck: 9.5/10<br/><br/>Location Convenience: 8.5/10<br/><br/>NOTES: Must try the shrimp chips appetizer and the butterfly shrimps.
