This is always in my top three bars in Toronto. I was a regular when I lived in Toronto as the food and beer was great and I also got to watch the footie. The staff are wonderful and when I went back to visit this week (June 2017) I had an amazing welcome from one of the lovely ladies who still works there. If you like English pubs you must check this out.

A comfortable and stylish backdrop for a get together with friends rarely seen. Take in the upper patio on a balmy night and you end up staying to close. Staff are attentive without being invasive. Fine beer selections.

This is THE BEST "British" food I have ever tasted, and I'm a Brit. The black treacle Sticky Toffee Pudding almost had me welling up with memories of my Nan's. Highly recommend. Beer selection awesome too.

We all loved it. Staff so friendly, great food, great atmosphere. I’ve seen a few negative reviews but it think these people need to realise they are going to a lovely English pub not the Ritz. Visiting Toronto we could have gone many places but we chose to spend a second night here as we were impressed by it. British travellers in particular would appreciate it.

Stop in for Pre Dinner Drinks

We stop in for pre-dinner drinks at another restaurant and enjoyed ourselves here. The selection of beer is wonderful and the service was great. The next time we visit Elm Street, we will have dinner at the Q & B.

Slogged in here with tired feet from "urban hiking".  Interesting, varied menu!  We had the daily soup, asparagus salad, the brick chicken, and the duck pie.  Honestly, I don't think any of us were thrilled.  The soup had strange flavours as did the salad with overpowering curry dressing. (Too bad because the fresh veggies were very nice). The duck pie was served cold!! (by error).  We had to send it back.  The brick chicken more strange flavours.  I don't think the Indian Fusion/Pub Food theme works.  Why the 4.0?  The service, the beer, and the sour dough bread.

What started out as drinks with the client team ended up extending to include dinner. There were about 15 of us at The Queen & Beaver, which is an older, upscale pub. We had the private dining room at the front of the restaurant. This evening was more about conversation than it was about the food. Having said that, service was good, in that our server was there when needed, and out of the way for the rest of the time.

I had the Haddock & Chips. It was a good English style fish, with a crispy beer batter, and the chips were good too. What made the dish different than other good fish and chips was the ketchup and tartar sauce, which were both house made. Both condiments had coarser cut ingredients, giving each of them a bit more body. The ketchup had a tangier taste than conventional ketchup, and the tartar sauce had more dill. The combination of different texture and a good, different taste made it memorable.

Fish and chips were excellent!! Not a big fan of fish and chips in general and ordered this and it pretty much changed my life. My new favourite, French fries were excellent and fish was well done.

Atmosphere of the front room is lovely. My companion had the daily soup for lunch and I had the mussels. Mussels were cooked in cider with fennel and quite tasty. We shared a salad of asparagus with purslane and goat cheese with buttery croutons. Smallish portion but full of flavour if a little acidic.

A light lunch for two with sparkling water and two teas came to $57 with tip.

British comfort food is awesome... cobblers and flaky pies and rich meats and curries are delicious, especially when it's cold out. The Q&B on Elm Street is such a cozy, pretty place to dine and really takes these types of dishes to the next level.

Brunch! Pancakes!!!! Maple syrup... Drenched! Nnnnnoooommm! Yes - it's that good, so good I can't even use grammar or make a full sentence. Other than that, the kale salad was superb... Adding the poached eggs to it was a really good idea! Oh - brunch is on the 2nd floor - just head upstairs after going thru the door!

Been here twice so far, and really enjoyed the food both times. The first time, I didn't have a proper meal, but shared a 'Platters of Toasts & Savouries' with my friends which was great, and had the Cured Halibut (great), and Raw Beef & Ramson (good, better than tartare's I've had in Toronto so far).

On my second visit, I tasted the house terrine with a friend. That was one of the nicest terrine's I've had in memory, particularly the chutney type thing that came with it was beautiful. And my main course was the Crispy Cider Duck, which was nicely done, the curry sauce was a nice departure from most duck confit I've had in French restaurants. My friend ordered the Midlands Curry, and felt it wasn't an authentic enough Vindaloo, but it was suicidal hot.

Who would have thought?. Staying at the Delta Chelsea (accross the street from the Queen & Beaver) I welcomed the idea to try out this GastroPub. I would have never guessed that the victorian styled house was warm & inviting and the meals were definetely out of the ordinary. I went all in and tried the ham & sweetbread terrine and the grilled ox tongue. My colleagues tried the chicken curry (nice decent portion and a tad spicy), a pound of muscles in a mustard cream sauce and harissa fish cakes with tartar sauce.
All amazing and what a great adventure to try something new.
Thanks to great professional staff, I will definetely recommend this place to colleagues staying at the Chelsea.

Hands down the best English pub in the city with beautiful grub. Make a reservation for te front room or be cast to the main dining area which is a bit tight. Lamb with shiitake puddings is a treat. On Sunday's the traditional roast can't be beat. Try the hamburger or lunch, it's unique, savory and wonderful. Upstairs on an afternoon can't be beat.

Great Surprise. I had given up on 'English pubs' in Canada. This ended up being better food than I have had in any pub anywhere in the world. The sausages were incredible (blue cheese and peppercorns...amazing) and the quality of the cheese plate, fish cakes, and sticky toffee pudding were unmatched in any bar/pub I've ever been to. Friendly knowledgeable staff and a diverse drink list made this a great experience. Quaint rooms and a packed outdoor patio just added to it.

All in all, The Queen and Beaver comes highly recommended, and we weren’t disappointed by our return visit a couple of months ago for TV’s birthday. So far, I’ve only sat in the front and back rooms on the first floor, both of which are comfortable and intimate. I like the front room, which reminds me of a parlor and lets you check out the street and passers-by. There is another bar on the second floor, and apparently two patios! I am just waiting for the weather to warm up a bit more so that we can check out the second floor patio, which is supposed to be quite nice. I’ll make sure to report back about that. And while we haven’t taken advantage of it, it’s worth noting that the pub has several group dinner options with 5-10 person minimums, such as Wood Roast Suckling Pig. These group dinners need to be ordered in advance.

An eccentric, homely, tavern opens like the houses of Great Britain of old. Dark wood accents mirror the hole in the walls of London or the pubs of Dublin. For brunch, layers of pancakes entertain maple and lumpy peanut butter ice cream. They are a crunchy delight.

So, it’s a bit refreshing to enter a pub with an allegiance to the motherland. The Queen and Beaver has a worn look, nestled among steak houses, Italian restaurants and a Firkin pub along Elm Street.

British food is stereotypically hailed as some of the worst food in the world. If The Queen and Beaver has anything to say about it, that reputation needs to change. They’ve done some excellent things at a very reasonable cost. Swing by and grab some guinea fowl; you won’t regret it.

It was good that the next booth, The Queen and Beaver Public House, were serving complimentary Hot Mulled Apple Cider and Gingerbread. It was a relief to hold the warm cup to bring back feeling to my chilled fingers. The gingerbread was a comfort too, complimenting with the drink with its nicely restrained sweetness and gingery highlights.

This cozy home style meal ended with a couple desserts which we shared. After all the giggling, we shared the Spotted Dick, a traditional British dessert of cake and currants. The dessert is named after Richard, hence the humorous nickname.

The food was delicious – the earthy mushrooms complemented the thin layers of creamy potatoes in the puff pastry-wrapped pithivier ($16), and the salad greens were a refreshing mix of bitter and mild leaves with pickled onions in a light vinaigrette.

My brother in-law had been pressing for us to try this gastro pub for some time now, and finally the right time and place appeared.

We were seated downstairs for lunch in a very cozy room, that was dotted with British memorabilia, a faux fireplace and a view of their blazing wood burning stove, outside of which was a pile of freshly baked bread.

The service was efficient but not as warm and welcoming as the atmosphere.

I ordered the fish and chips, and Michael Bacinello ordered the smoked haddock with curry rice and a poached egg. The homemade tartar sauce had an unexpected and delightful lemony tang , and the fish was golden and crispy with a very good ratio of fish to batter. The curry dish was excellent.

If you know my food habits, it is a fact that if a butter tart is on the menu, I will be getting it, so there was no question I would order the raisin butter tart with ice cream. This was not your typical Canadian butter tart, but resembled more the Amercan cousin pecan pie, the filling was overly sweet and thick and the pastry did not taste fresh. The whisky gingerbread ice cream was unique, and it was a good distraction from the processed feel of the tart.

Overall the final bill of $75.00 (incl 2 pints of beer) was a little steep given the quality of the dishes. That being said, when a special occasion presents itself I would like to go back and try out their tasting feasts with a group, it seems to be the right type of place to chill and enjoy others company.

I'm going to make this one a quickie since the focus of the evening was not on food.. though I always seem to be able to shift the focus, at least for myself. It was a friends birthday, and a screen to watch the Leafs game was a prerequisite for the evenings festivities. Now, I do know my way around pubs, but sports bars- not so much. I usually try to avoid those types of places, not because there is anything wrong with the food necessarily, but because I don't tend to like the noise or the crowds. Regardless, I was on a mission to find a place that was playing the game where the food didn't suck. So I had read about the Queen and Beaver Public House for a while now, and when I called them to ask if they would take a reservation, a man with a British accent answered. I knew it was going to be good. And by good, I meant, it would be better than Hoops. And it definitely was.

The Q B has a restaurant downstairs (very adorable and British looking.. with tea cups, and "Queen" parafenalia.. I like this crap because I have British heritage, but many would not), and then it has a lounge upstairs where the game is playing, seating is more casual (no reservations, couches etc.), and they have a nice selection of games and cards etc.

The menu is VERY British. It goes beyond fish and chips (though it has that too), and has some more interesting offerings.
We tried (I'm only going to elaborate on what I tasted):

Bar Nuts

3 Yr Old Cheddar and Tomatoes on Toast
This was a good comfort food dessert. The toast was nice and crispy, and the sharpness of the cheddar was balanced by the sweetness of those roasted tomatoes.

Sardines and Tomatoes on Toast
Similar and also good, but with a salty sardine kick.

Fish and Chips

Burger and chips

Duck and Potato Pie
Both pies were good but not great. The potato layers were supposed to be kind of like scalloped potatoes, but they lacked a bit of creaminess. The dish as a hole was a little bit dry, and definitely could have used a ladle of gravy or sauce. The salad (simple greens with some pickled onions and gerkins) was delicious though, and I never rave about salads so good job Q B.

Wild Mushroom Pithivier

Chocolate and Caramel Tart (no photo)

Sticky Toffee Pudding with Banana Peanut Ice Cream
Best part of the night. The pudding had a super delicate, moist texture, and the toffee sauce had a slightly bitter edge to offset the sweetness. I loved the ice cream too, and would honestly return just for dessert and drinks as there were so many different options that I wanted to try (bread and butter pudding with a scoop of stilton-wild cherry ice cream- oh dear...).

The bill included a lot of libations so I can't really list everything and the prices, but I can say that it was incredibly reasonable for everything, food and drinks, and I would absolutely return with a group next time people want to go out for good value.

Most recently, I came across The Queen and Beaver Public House, a Toronto downtown Gastropub that is allegedly known as one of the first Gastropubs that surfaced in this city. From the outside, it looks like a typical British pub serving to the undergraduate crowds. One quick look inside however takes the experience to a whole new level where folks of all ages come for a bite, a pint and a good time.

Executive Chef, Andrew Carter, has taken classic British dishes that have stood the test of time and added his expertise and love of food to create what is now a distinctive pub fare in the city of Toronto. Menu items like the Hand Chopped Burger and Chips are a perfect representation of a timeless pub staple.

The meat patty is made with AAA Canadian sirloin beef and is grounded on the premises and seasoned with spices and, though not 100% confirmed, word has it is also seasoned with bone marrow. It sort of explains why the flavour is so rich and the meat has such a chunky consistency. The bun on the other hand is a sesame seed bun that’s made fresh and holds up under the weight of the meaty burger. Chef Carter takes a minimalist approach on this burger, serving it only with the bacon, cheese and house-made ketchup. The rest is up to our taste buds.

If beef is not your thing, worry not. The Queen and Beaver does not leave anybody behind, also serving one of Britain’s most famous culinary export – Fish and Chips. Accompanied with home-made tartare, grilled lemon and hand cut chips, the fish and chips add the “gastro” in “pub” at this local spot. The fresh deep fried fish is slightly flaky, with a non-greasy but crispy batter, while the chips are seasoned just right, cooked just fine, complementing the fried fish quite perfectly.

And what would be of Gastropubs without a great pint or a blonde? The Queen and Beaver knows one does not go without the other, showcasing a local and international selection of beers and ciders. A bold recommendation from the waitress led me to try the Beau’s All Natural Lug Tread lagered Ale. All 600 ml of this blonde have never paired so well with the Queen’s pub fare.

Buen Provecho,
Foodies Inked.

I have been to The Queen and Beaver Public House a couple of times now and this time around, there was 12 of us this time so we decided to try out their Feasting menu.

Innis & Gunn Scotch Barrel Aged 13oz (Scotland) $8.95
McAuslan Cream Ale (Quebec) $7.25
Durham Brewery Black Katt Stout (Ontario) $7.25

Venison Cobbler w/ Cheddar Scones + Roast Bison

We order 6 portion each at $360 total ($30pp), both are from their feasting menu with a minimum of 5-6 order per dish.

This Venison Cobbler was hearty and delicious but totally wish it came with some sort of carb or bread to mop the sauce.

The roast bison was perfectly cook, I was expecting something dryer but it was moist and quite fatty with a red center. I'll have to say that this is a rather small portion, this was suppose to serve 6 people which mean 1/2 portion each for the 12 of us. We each got a slice each, even with full portion which is 2 slice I doubt any of us will be entirely full.

The feast only came with a side of roasted veggies which I thought was rather limited. For a table of 12, I was hopping for more than one choice of side.

Sticky Toffee Pudding & Vanilla Ice Cream $8
You know I can't resist the ooyee gooyee goodness of STP, this was the perfect traditional tasting dessert.

Verdict :
Great company, great hearty meal & great service.
With a big table, all our order was spot on, our water was filled on time...
The feasting menu was definitely tasty but very reasonable priced as well.

With the strong persuasive skills of my blogger friend (@YashYanthi), she was able to convince our entire group to order the hand chopped burger, one of her favourite items at the restaurant. To balance out my meal, I swapped the chips for a salad.

If you have read any of my previous posts on my view on burgers, one huge component to an amazing burger is based on the quality of the meat…I must be able to eat the meat rare or even blue. I had it done rare while my adventurous friend had it blue. The burger was phenomenal with a nice sear on the outside. As I took a bite, I loved seeing the hand chopped chunks of seasoned meat done to my liking. The salad was light with a great assortment of lettuces; a perfect balance to a juicy burger.

One of the best deals at lunch is food items from the kids menu. My friend ordered fish and chips for her toddler and she got a massive portion enough to feed a hungry adult.

I have been on a roll with delicious eats. There’s no doubt that I will return for their feasting menu.
