Review Mezes - Toronto

Tawseef Khan
What a lovely place for authentic Greek food. We went here for lunch and ordered the whole fish which was sea bream for the day. Also ordered the humus bread for starter. The bread was nice and soft although a tad bit oily. The humus was delicious. The fish was perfectly done. We loved the barbecue flavour and it was so soft inside. However, we were hoping for a little larger fish as it felt too small for the two of us. I reckon it would be perfect for one person. The interior is light and traditionally decorated and it really enhances the experience. Food is pricey but good.

Nice atmosphere, authentic service, food is always top of the line and relatively well priced. Usually busy but never too long of a wait to be seated, don't feel rushed, and food comes fairly quick. If you like Greek cuisine this is a must visit. spot on the Danforth, and with patio.

This place is SO BUSY, but the waiters and waitress never stop tending to your needs! It was amazing ! The Greek salad was great, the stuffed pastries were so good too. The chicken souvlaki dinner was yummy. Finally, I'd definitely recommend the baklava as a dessert. I'd definitely check this place out in the summertime !!!

It is a lovely Greek restaurant with very European/Greek vibe and decor! I heard their fried calamari is a must, so we ordered it as an appetizer. It is honestly my favorite calamari in Toronto thus far, and they serve it in a huge portion! We also got the dip plater as an appetizer and it is good to order if you are a group of people! As for the main, I ordered the chicken souvlaki dinner. The potatoes are really good! Again, huge portions that I was not able to finish it but I did take it home and have it for lunch the next day, which is awesome! I’ll definitely come back again !!

Finding the location was very easy and parking is just around the corner. Walked in and was greeted and seated instantly. The place is alittle congested but with the pandemic it's understandable they wanna make their money back. We ordered the fried calamari which was delicious. We also ordered the musaka which was very delicious along with the lamb Slovakia which was cooked properly. Over all 4 starts I would recommend this place. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. And the desert which was baklava was delicious.

One of my favourite Greek restaurants on the Danforth, we’ve been back multiple times and loved it every time! We typically get some skewers, dips (their pita bread with the dips are THE BEST) & a salad. This time we opted out for the seafood platter, which was delicious full of shrimp, calamari and grilled octopus! It was good, but definitely a lot for 2 people!!

I had the Moussaka and it was excellent. The Zinnis Rice Special that my friend had was very tasty, nice flavours with chicken, pork, calamari, wine and fresh tomatoes. Great atmosphere and attentive staff.

I went here for a friend's birthday. It is nice little restaurant in Greek town. They have halal chicken options. Beef and lamb are not halal though. I tried the chicken soulaki. It was good. A little bland for my taste. My friend tried the Aegan fare and highly recommend it. Overall we had a good experience and food was nice as well.

This place has never disappointed. I was craving calamari and decided to go with a grilled dish. I have tried it fried and hands down its one of the best dishes in town. Grilled calamari on the other hand... not everyone can make it well, however Mezes was a winner once again! The meal portion was just enough to put you over the edge and then reel you back in for a few more nibbles! It came with 3 pieces of calamari, a side of rice and potatoes, plus a delicious salad. The calamari was fresh succulent, grilled to perfection with just the right amount of seasoning, ovo and lemon (none of that chewy, fishy business that you end up regretting at some restaurants)! I ate most of my meal with a great glass of house red wine. I packaged up a few bites for the next morning to share with my sister, so she could try. I must say, even after warming it up in the microwave, the calamari was just as good as it was the night before.... Looks like Mezes will be getting a new customer soon! #Mezes #Amazing #Bestcalamari #fried OR #grilled

I just had the most heart warming experience here. I called just after the kitchen was closed with a craving for their unbelievable dips platter. Despite the fact that all of the staff had gone home and the kitchen was closed, Tony put together the dips platter for me and fired up the grill so I could have some hot pita to go with it. There is something to say about businesses with a heart. If you haven't gone to this place, go. The service and food are top notch. Let Tony know that the girl with the late night dips craving sent you.

The food is always amazing. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. This is our go to place for great Greek food on the Danforth. It's a standout among its peers. Highly recommend that you eat here and you will keep returning as well.

Amazing food!! Quick service and good atmosphere would recommend it for any Greek food lover!

Most delicious Greek food in the area. The best grilled calamari I've ever had. Nicest staff & owner. Always a great time.
Bhishma Balkaransingh
Amazing service. The food was excellent. So delicious and full of flavor. They also catered to the allergies at our table without missing a beat. Will definitely be back soon.

Amazing food!! One of the best Greek fish and quail. Will be back!!!

There's a reason this place always has a line-up. Best Greek food in Toronto.
Steven Kalabokes
Excellent food and ambiance. The Greek salad was delicious and plentiful. The souvlaki was tender and very tasty. Service was exceptional. Great location in an excellent Greek Town.
Joanne April
Exceptional service, delicious fresh food and oh the wine...
Chriso Constantinou Nanos
Awesome food friendly place
Juan Peros
Food was just ok. Over priced for what you got. The Greek salad was soggy and was obviously not made fresh. Much better Greek restaurants to choose from. Won't be going back.
Victoria Frantsev
Cozy place with acceptable prices, bid portions, musical variety and smiling staff

Authentic Greek cuisine, unique wine list and impeccable service...hard to compete with Mezes

I was there last night with my husband. Food was amazing, but their customer service was over the top. Will definitely be returning
Christina Koen
Went with my daughters for a meal last night! Food was very good! Staff very pleasant and attentive! Will definitely eat here again!
Kathleen Robertson
The best service I have had in a long time. Ordered lunch and food started arriving in 5 min and we had a full lunch in 10 min. The food was great although I have had better grilled octopus before.
Krishna Goel
They treat you like family

There is a reason that this restaurant is the busiest on the Danforth. They make you feel like you have been invited to their home for dinner. The waiters have been there for years and the owner Tony is a fabulous, welcoming individual. No reason to go anywhere else in Toronto for fabulous, authentic Greek food.
Chad
We had a wonderful Greek meal with Pengi Bear ! The lamb was juicy and so good. The dips tasted homemade and I wanted to keep eating. The quail was also moist and great. And the service was tops. Lastly, I forget how to spell it, but the flaming cheese app is just hot, greasy, melty goodness!!
Theo Kalafatis
Musaka was dry and lacked the traditional flavours. This was one of my favourite places, but I'm moving on to somewhere better. Won't come here again.

Service was good.
David Hewitt
Most definitely my favourite Greek restaurant in Toronto!!! The food made me feel like I'm in Greece! Everything was absolutely on point. The grilled kalamari is just devine and perfectly charred! My mouth is watering just reliving it! Great wine list, got some good Greek options. Service was super friendly. LOVE! Can't wait to come back!
Salsadreea
Greek done very well, in our opinion. Very delicious, tasty food, a nice patio on the Danforth, a wide selection of food and the option to order smaller portions of appetizers and meats as opposed to one big meal.

The chicken skewers were succulent, flavourful and cooked to perfection. The calamari was delicious! The pita that came with the hummus and potato/garlic spread, both of which were so good, was buttery and warm.

We had our fill of the variety of different foods we tried and ended up leaving overfed :)

Would definitely go back anytime!
Wanderlusting Mama
The Octapodi Skaras (grilled octopus with EVOO) came in a serving of two tentacles, beautifully grilled with red pepper and lemon wedge. It was tasty but the meat was a bit rubbery. I still prefer squid.

The Ortikia (grilled quail) was bony but super tasty. The thin layer of meat absorbed the seasonings well and the skin was crispy. The quail was halved and served with tzatziki (yogurt and garlic dip).

Our friends ordered lamb leg and chicken souvlaki while hubby and I shared lamb souvlaki and grilled calamari.

The meals were served with elliniki salad, potatoes and rice. The salad was a hit with me--lettuce, tomatoes and olives drizzled with olive oil and topped with a generous helping of feta cheese. It was delicious!

The souvlakis were beautifully grilled with just a slight char. The grilled calamari was tender and perfectly-cooked--definitely one of my favourite dishes.

Two of my group of friends was so hype about this restaurant
so we booked the place and check out it out.

We arrived early so we got seated right away. The restaurant
look decent, looks like the place was run by the entire family. There’s only 1
girl which is the hostess, the rest are guys serving. We ordered some kebobs,
the meat is a bit overcooked, potatoes are awful (they taste sour for some
reason) the side rise was bland. One of my friend ordered there special and she
was disappointed that the side dish was fries, instead of a salad, wasn’t given
a choice to ask for substitution. My other friend ordered this so called
grilled calamari, it was awful and he’s a foodie. He wasn’t impressed at all. There
bread is like a brick.

Don’t go here if you hate noise.

We are seating behind this group of women who think they are
in a bar, they are so freaking LOUD!!!

Our whole dinner experienced is a thumbs down! I will never
ever go back to this restaurant again.

I don’t know why this restaurant still in business, there
food is so overrated. I don’t go often in Mcdonald’s but I’d rather go there
than at Mezes.
Generic Eater
Crowded, bustling restaurant with solid meat and seafood options. Respectable vegetarian entrées like vegetarian moussaka also make this Greek restaurant a viable option for vegetarians. Stand out is the attentive, lightning speed service. Serviceable wine list. Disappointments were Greek salad: comprised mainly of iceberg lettuce, with a few slices of cucumber, bell pepper, and some grape tomatoes tossed in a too-sour vinaigrette; interior darkness also made menu reading difficult. Our neighbouring tables used their cell phones or LED pen-lights to scrutinise the menu. My dining partner remarked that he felt the flashing LED lights made him feel as though he was being pursued by police helicopter. We had the saganaki, calamari, lamb roast and half roasted chicken entrées (both accompanied by Greek salad, roasted potatoes and rice). Seating hostess exceptional for her unflappable, friendly, efficient hospitality.

This place was really good!!!! I was very impressed by the presentation of the food and the atmosphere of the place. The service was excellent and the washrooms were clean. We ordered an appetizer which consisted of hummus and eggplant spread which tasted amazing with the garlic pita. It was the best pita I ever had in a restaurant in my life. The hummus was good too! Then I had the Greek salad which was perfect except had a little too much vinegar otherwise it was fantastic. Then I had the garlic toast which was also super yummy. My brothers soup contained chicken but I tried it anyway - avoiding the chicken piece of course - but I'm sure there was still chicken in the broth... But that was tasty as well ! I would definitely recommend this place to everyone! Worth every penny!
Angelina
Holy shit! 😃 this was so good. It's Greek food and so authentic. I had the chicken souvlaki, obviously, and tye chicken was so tender with the warmth of the pita... yum! We also ordered saganaki, which is a flamed cheese and they set it on fire right next to your table haha
CordovaPie
What the service lacked in eye contact & friendliness was made up by speed of ordering and getting our drinks and food like clock work. Lots of menu options. Yummy dips, very garlic humus. Pita was tasty! Lamb dishes and the baked cheese that they light on fire - fun!

On the third day morning, J dropped us at the Lisgar Go Train station on her way to work. We decided to stay in Toronto for shorter and ease of commute to the attractions we planned to visit. J&C, thank you so much for opening your home to us for the past two days. After settling down at the airbnb place which we got at the last minute, we walked to the St. Lawrence Market which is a short distance from our accommodation for lunch, not knowing that it is closed on Monday.

Best greek food in the area! Service was fantastic, great time sharing appetizers, the dips and calamari were Divine! Definitely coming back

Too noisy and tight. I have been to Mezes with a group of colleagues and we had an alright time but I would like to say that if you are looking for a spacious place where yo ucan get some peace and not be crammed in, I would not go to Mezes. The food didn't really sit too well either. I did however enjoy drinking Vulkan Greek beer there. I will give it 6 out of 10.
UrbanRoo
Fine food, good service. Had a wonderful family dinner here. The four of us made a celebratory meal sharing a wide variety of mezes. Everyone was happy: vegan, seafood lovers, and meat-lovers alike. And no gluten was no problem. This is no small accomplishment! Service was excellent, and our server took the trouble to bring a side of hot peppers when asked, even though they aren't listed on the menu....It is worth noting that our family isn't the most traditional one, still we were treated warmly and with respect. We will definitely be returning.
Julie
Great food, kind waiters, love mezes!
Zara
Amazing service, food and experience.. Went for dinner on a Thursday evening. Neighbourhood was quiet but Mezes was full, so we had high expectations and they did not disappoint! We ordered 4 types of dip and pita, saganaki, sticks of souvlaki and a moussaka. Everything was really good, some of the best greek food we have ever had. The service was very good and they are very welcoming. We will definitely return and try the lamb next time.
Irene
As Greek as it can get!. This Greek restaurant came highly recommended and rightfully so, seeing as it has won numerous awards. My husband and I enjoyed the taramosalata, gemista, horta, kolikithakia, and kalamari!

Our favorite Greek restaurant. My wife and I love Mezes. We love the fact that we can order our meat separately à la cart. We usually have the hummus, the rodos salad and either three or four lamb chops. We like the chops well done. The hummus is the best in Toronto in our opinion. It comes with pita bread which is always homemade and delicious. The lamb chops are very tasty and the salad is delicious. The salad is made with goat cheese and figs and greens.

We've always found the service to be excellent. We've always gone at lunch though, never at dinner.
Lauren
Food was great, wish we had more room to try a variety of menu items. Very pleased with the sevice as the waiter took his time to explain in detail tonus the
Various menu items and how traditional Greeks share their food. It was nice that he went the extra mile to share the extra info. Will have to go back to try more delicious items, since I couldn't help eyeing up how good what those had ordered around me.

Rudest waiters

Excellent. Pros: Fantastically fresh good food.

Cons: Slow, sullen service. Busy and Cramped.

Go for the food, it's worth the cons.
Sheryl
After reading all the great reviews we stopped by for dinner.

Food was good. I was expecting to have a great dining experience, the staff are not very friendly. Didn't have a great OPA experience at all.

With many other restaurants like this in the area I would suggest you go somewhere else.
Lansdowne Lou
If you have relatives from Sudbury visiting, they will love it. If you are hosting someone from Manhattan, then go elsewhere. It's a cliche-filled place with below average service that only a well-travelled person would identify. It's not horrible or anything, it's just very "food network". The wine selection is good.
Priya
Best Greek Food in Toronto. Best Greek food in the city served by friendly and funny waiters. You can't go wrong. This is a good place to take out-of-town friends who want to experience something unique. Definitely get the saganaki and the dip platter.
Malberz
Surprisingly good. Went there last night on second visit. Wasn't exactly knocked out the first time, but this time I was pleasantly surprised. We ordered the fried calamari, which were excellent, and Greek chicken soup and souvlaki. The souvlaki was pretty ordinary and the soup was good. But what really stood out was the service. Our waiter was very kind and attentive, and even though our party of three had two young kids in it, he treated us very well, offering us a nice table by the window and generally doing everything right. If I went back, I'd try to get that waiter again!
Mary P
Delicious!. Mezes' calamari is the best I've had, and the souvlaki dinners never disappoint! My go-to place for Mediterranean cuisine.
Gregg
Excellent & Busy. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. I've been several times and usually go with one of the souvlaki dishes. Appetizers are also all amazing They only take half reservations so it it usual busy at the popular times so don't expect to get a table right away.
CatusGabrielis
Fav Greek on the Danforth. In the year since we moved into the 'hood, we've been there many times, usually with friends and family. We always order small plates to share instead of individual entrees. Almost everything we tried were very good, but the calamari is the *best* I have had anywhere. The Greek wines are lovely too. Service is good, no matter how busy.
Leanne
I am so tired of the poor service I receive at this average restaurant. With so many choices on The Danforth they have helped me make mine; I will take my business elsewhere and advise friends and family to choose another restaurant.
Jaycee
Favourite Greek spot on the Danforth!. I love how warm and cozy this restaurant is, and it is almost always bustling which goes to show how popular this joint is. Make sure to order the Saganaki as not only is it a tasty treat, (especially if you have kids) the waiter puts on a little show by flambeing the cheese at your table and exclaiming "OPA!"
Carlos Oberoi
Been going o this place for over 20yrs. Never disappointed. By far my favourite Greek spot

My wife and I have been visiting this restaurant for about 3 years now. I d say we have been 3 times. We always order souvlaki dinners and they are always excellent. In fact, I don't think we've ever had a bad experience at this restaurant. The people posting about salads swimming and whatever just don't have a clue what they're talking about. You want meat here. The greek meat is always excellent, as is everything else.
Service is generally good - no complaints. The one girl generally in the back is one sexy Greek fox. Darn don't tell my wife.
We usually go early Saturday evening and the owner is always there, so he's definitely hands-on. She is there too.
All in all a great dining experience. This place has been voted "#1 Greek Restaurant" many years in a row, and it's easy to understand why.
Felist
Authentic Greek. Really like this place and is authentic, lamb dish is great, would for sure go back.

Greek Heaven. My family and I have eaten at Mezes for a decade and a half, and it never grows old. Sure it may be a little noisy, but the food is bold and delicious, the pace of the service is outstanding, and the servers are so nice that you'd swear they were family (to us they almost are).

With a few drops of brandy, Saganaki (a cheese pancake) goes up in flames like something from a Kiss concert, done for just long enough to give it a crisp exterior but retain the creaminess of the cheese. To us, no Greek restaurant, inside or outside Toronto, has done Saganaki as memorably as Mezes. French fries covered with feta cheese and a little herbal seasoning make for one of the best side plates I can think of, and there is enough for the family. Pork or Chicken souvlaki are delicious aromatic main courses, and Traditional yogurt and honey, with a touch of cinnamon makes for a distinctive and memorable way to conclude a meal, with a cup of coffee.

I don't think I will ever stop frequenting Mezes.
Sean Ormsby
Original. Finally a Greek place on the danforth that doesn't offer the same genric menu. Some really delicious plates, and great FRESH fish. My only complaint was the that our wine glasses stank, obviously wiped down with a dirty dishtowel. Hopefully they will fix this practice.
Zafir
The best way to sample a variety of hellenic delights ... Take your time and savor.

AMAZING food & service! The lamb shank, grilled calamari, and souvlaki were all delicious and fresh. Will definitely return with more people next time!

My fave on the danforth!
Fuciagrunge
Delicious greek. I'm sure this small inconspicuous place has trouble competing with big loud places on the danforth like astoria, but it is truly a gem. the flaming cheese-called saganaki I think? is unusual and tasty. great calamari and souvlaki, so my meat-eater brother tells me. it's a good place to bring both friends and family.

Delish!! This place is so good!!! It's small family style seating speaks highly about the importance of closeness in the Greek culture. The staff are efficient, sweet and full of character. The food...AMAZING!!! Easily the best Greek food I have ever eaten in my whole life, and that's why it's my favorite! The dips are to die for and I think I even saw them being sold at mcewans which just makes life so much better! The meat is always the best cuts and tender goodness . TRY THE GRILLED OCTOPUS...OMG ! I have nothing but good things to say about this wonderful restaurant . I don't LIKE it...I LOVE it !!
Dianne
Extremely disapointed. Visited this establishment again, but won't return. I was there with a friend on a Sunday afternoon around 2:30 pm, so the restaurant was not busy in the least. Our server was very "miserable", slow, and pretty much gave the indication that he totally did not want to be there. The prices are outrageous for the portions provided; looks like the prices have increased, while the size of the meals have decreased. So, I gave this place two chances, and that's it. I will not go back, and I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Jackie G
Huge portions and really tasty food. Service was quick despite being a busy Friday night. Entrees range from $15-$20. Atmosphere was inviting, especially liked the xmas decor this time of year Would definitely go back for some more delicious Greek food.
Jen
Mezes review. One of my favourite restaurants on the danforth. the appetizers are wonderful- try the dips or the calamari. the mains are great. souvlaki! it's definitely a fun place to come with friends. especially during the summer when you can eat on the patio & watch people go by :)
Ocius1
Good Greek!. Great, authentic greek food, and the waiters actually know the answer to your questions about the food. The world's best tapenade is enough to enjoy and still take a container home! Moderate price. Yum! Yum! Yum!
Stella
Although crowded and noisy the food is consistently good and the service is excellent. My favourite on the danforth.
Amir Ali Nourbakhsh
The food is good, not spectacular, but the wine list has a great selection of Greek wines. The staff is very friendly and the ambience is cozy. 7/10

What's All the Fuss?. With the many restaurants on the Danforth, this place is always busy at prime hours and it has always left me scratching my head. So one day I tried it out and left completely unimpressed. Usually when a place is packed there is something special about it, but obviously I'm the exception here.
After reading other reviews on this restaurant maybe I didn't approach it the right way. It seems the best way to enjoy the place is to order and share a bunch of different plates. I went to my staple chicken souvlaki and my wife had some sort of meatloaf style meal. I didn't have any complaints about the food (although my wife didn't really like the meatloaf as she thought it was very salty), and the service was fine. I do believe they had a good selection on wines, but I'm not a wine drinker so I didn't get the benefit of this.

The reason why I would choose other restaurants over this one is for 2 reasons
1) the tables are set way to close together, and its almost like you are eating with strangers
2) they charge for extra tzatziki (this irks me)

People generally seem to have a good time at this place, but my Greek dining structure is not suited for this place.
Om Nom Nom Nom
Traditional Greek Food. I've been here about 3 times and while I'm not the best judge of good Greek food, my distinguishing friends always pick this place. The service is excellent, and the food is very tasty. Greek food isn't my most favourite of international cuisines, but I really like this place too. It's worth the trip.

OPA! If Greek food is your thing, then the Danforth in Toronto (otherwise known as Toronto’s “Greektown”) is where you want to be!...My friend and I were already going to be in the area, so we decided to try out Mezes, which is known for serving traditional Greek fare in an unfussy manner.
MelaDolce
The food itself was really good and the menu was very budget friendly. Although Mezes offers entrees I would recommend sticking to the sharing plates to get a full appreciation of what the place has to offer. I really was looking for authentic Mediterranean flavors and Mezes really does deliver on that. I loved how the place doesn't have a pretentious quality about it. The dishes are Greek classics and even the plates are simple yet beautiful with lovely borders. The menu asks you to imagine yourself being in the Aegean which I thought was a nice touch a la Shirley Valentine (It helps that Kristina and I are about her age in spirit!). My favourite dish out of everything we ordered was the calamari with a crispy batter aligning the outside and melt in your mouth buttery fish on the inside. It was served with a rich yet refreshing tzatziki. I liked how their pitas were thin and garlicky i

Mezes has been on the Danforth in the heart of Greektown, for years. Often this places can be quite busy for it provides consistently fresh, Greek classics and plentiful portions,
Dobbernation
After asking around it seemed as though Mezes is the neighbourhoods go to spot for authentic Greek eats. Upon arrival we were seated on the restaurants street facing petite patio and slowly lowered ourselves while muttering oooh n’ ahhh before whisking our way through the restaurant extensive menu.
FoodigatorJ
I love Mezes, they serve simple Greek food -- nothing fancy and that's what I enjoy. They stick to what they know and everything tastes super fresh and the strong flavors just makes it better. I think I found my favorite Greek spot in Toronto, I am def going back to try other items from the menu.

Food wasn’t anything memorable...

.... I love the Danforth – especially because it’s home to a restaurant that has never let me down. I was first introduced to Mezes by a friend from High School – she raved about it until I finally visited; and lo and behold, I was seriously impressed by the quality of their food. But my respect and admiration for Mezes increased massively when I approached them for a donation years late
