Review Red Lion Smokehouse - Thunder Bay

Jodie-Lynn McMullen
All I need to say is mushrooms tacos...that's it, that's my whole review. Those babies were so delicious and that sauce?! That sauce! Smother me in that sauce please! I tried the pulled pork, and fish tacos as well- they were very tasty but nothing compared to the mushroom one. A really great selection of local beers (a particularly varied IPA list!) We were a large group and our food came quickly, our waitress was very friendly and joked around with us all night!

Vegan options, vegetarian options and tons of beer! Loved our meals here everything from the vegan pesto pasta to the deep fried olives and MASSIVE plate of potato skins you won’t be disappointed with the food here! Service and seating was decent and they have over 13 on tap beers! Great place to hang with friends as they have so many cool events happening. Hours are as seen in the photo below. (September 2021)

Darn good ribs and Mac and cheese!!! Friendly wait staff, good service, all I could ask for. Three ribs were not over cooked and moist. The rib was gentle but evident and the bbq sauce was a sweet and sticky mixture that complimented the ribs wonderfully. I ordered a side of Mac and cheese to round out a perfect meal combination. I would recommend highly and come back next time in town.

A pretty good little restaurant downtown Thunder Bay. We were recommended to head there by our hostel, and could see the people on the patio from a block away. It was very busy for a Saturday night which was great to see as the rest of Thunder Bay seemed mostly dead. The food was good - my husband had the maple burger which he loved. I had the pulled pork sandwich, and have to be honest wasn’t a huge fan. The pork was a bit too smoked making it slightly bitter and it overpowered any other taste there may have been. Great selection of beer, though we got ours warm which I didn’t love. But it was busy so I could understand. Overall, a good restaurant to visit on a trip to Thunder Bay.

Baby back ribs were awesome. I had half slab with a sweet somewhat sticky bbq sauce. Reminded me of Kansas City bbq. The ribs were rubbed with a spice I couldn't recognize, I enjoyed the surprise. I had the Mac and cheese as an additional side. It was a good compliment to the ribs. The cheese sauce was creamy and had a little crunch. Worth every penny and then some. The ribs came with a weak coleslaw. I'd go back again and order the same thing.

The menu carries typical North America foods, also included a variety of taco options which I had. The Taco's were a good size and tasted very good. Outdoor patio dining available.

First time at the Red Lion. I was seated on the stylish patio, and tried out a full rack of Pork Ribs with Chips Aioli on the side. The ribs come with a coleslaw, but I don’t care for slaw very much and didn’t want it to go to waste. Lunch was delicious. The ribs weren’t as fall off the bone as I would have liked, but it was still very tasty and filling lunch. My server was very friendly and helpful when it came to ordering drinks especially. I went with a pint Lakeside Kolsch which was a lighter tasting beer. Very tasty. I followed that up with a pint of Shindig which had a bit of a sharper taste and was also tremendous. I’m looking forward to dining inside on my next visit. It looks very clean and an excellent atmosphere inside. There are over 100 Craft Beers available. This is a great spot to host an event. They have enough space to hold 130 guests. Take out or delivery is also available on the delivery App that you probably already use. LGBTQ friendly, as well as Vegetarian and kid friendly.

Fantastic service! Even though there were a few large parties inside, we still had excellent service on the patio. They even lit the heaters and fire pits for us, which was wonderful. The food was also excellent, we got the BBQ platter and shared it between 2 people. Plenty of food for the two of us! Great beer selection too, I've never seen Godspeed available outside of the brewery.

We had a server in training so the service was alittle slow but he tried he’s best and he’s good, the menu is pretty bomb, you’ll have a lot of choices to choose from, and let’s not forget about the board games!

The quality was good, portions were very small. When I go out for supper, I expect to leave feeling like I ate. Instead the meal cost $67.00 (including tip), and we came home rather hungry. No wonder the waitress told me to order a "side" for my non-existent meal. I ordered the carpaccio, which was good, but I had to ask where the fish was....apparently it is cut paper thin and in a pinkish broth surrounded by a slight salad. My husband ordered the Maple bacon burger with fries... I ended up eating his fries as I was still hungry. You get better value for your money at the "Prospector" across the street. At least I would not have left there hungry!!

Red Lion is an absolute gem in the downtown district of Thunder Bay. Aesthetically beautiful and great service! The food is incredibly tasty and the incorporation of craft beer options brings a new edge to the local Thunder Bay community and to touring craft beer lovers! My only wish is they get more Flying Monkeys Amber Ale. Bravo!

Very Poor Service - Extremely Disappointed. My mother and I had heard good things about the Red Lion and decided to try it for lunch. When we arrived at about a little after 1 it was not busy at all, maybe one or two tables that were already eating.

It took us around 7 to 10 minutes to get drinks, and we waited another 10 minutes for the server to come back before simply getting up, paying for the two cokes, and leaving. The waitress was at the bar talking to another customer who had already been served and was eating. Waitress just took payment for the drinks, which we hadn't even finished, and didn't ask us if anything was wrong or if there was a problem.

I cannot leave a review on the food, as nothing was sampled. But the service was very poor. Considering it wasn't anywhere near busy the wait time to even get an order placed was abysmal. Disappointed, and will not be back.

Red Lion Smokehouse Review. I am thrilled that this place is in Thunder Bay. The range of quality beers to experience is astounding. The maple bacon burger is probably the best hamburger I have yet eaten. The service could not have been more friendly and prompt. The atmosphere is open and not crowded. The music was at just the right volume. I will definitely return.

Selection of beer was excellent, food was ok. We were a group of 4 and ordered appys and main dishes. We found the menu very small and not geared to full dinner dining. The appys were very good Pork belly and Wings. We all found the main dishes were lacking, The ribs did not have a a smoky flavour despite indicating 4 hrs of smoke and the overall taste was ordinary. The salads were good but any meat additions were deep fried and overdone (only tasted the batter). We did not try the burgers but maybe this is their niche,, burgers and beer.

Red Lion Smokehouse. Excellent service!
Pulled pork bunwich served with coleslaw and homemade fries, very tasty $14
Brisket served with coleslaw and homemade fries, tasty! $25
This is like having a piece of prime rib but not.
This product I think would be better served as a bunwich similar to pulled pork and the price point could be reduced!
This Red Lion is highly recommend!

Nice addition to the downtown core. I went to the red lion to meet some friends from work for a very important "meeting".
Ended up feeling very comfortable and was absolutely astonished at the transformation from the tattered remains of Jack's. Me being a self-described avid beer drinker had no idea that there was an entire world of unknown styles and flavours which, until then I had yet to venture.
Food-wise, I went with the maple-bacon burger. Im pretty particular when it comes to burgers and this easily found a spot in my top 10.
My server-Mike was quite the character to say the least. Although he was running around semi-frantic (looked like he had a lot on his plate), he still had time to make our experience great, along with a few good laughs and a lot of help.
All in all, I'll be back next time we have a very important "meeting", work related of course.

Definitely not a 5 star restaurant!. I surprised my girlfriend with a reservation at the Red Lion Smokehouse thinking that it'd be busy, only to find out that it was near empty. Here are the results:
Pros:
It is a very warm environment, and a family oriented restaurant. Very welcoming waiters and waitresses, clean atmosphere, and your orders are taken almost immediately.
Cons:
The seats are all uncomfortable, they're made out of wood and the atmosphere resembles that of a woodworkers/carpenters house. The fish that we ordered was rotten, and for the burgers they used corned beef instead of classic ground beef patties that you may be used to having in other restaurants. Some of the waitresses didn't repeat orders back in order to confirm that everything was correct, which is why we ended up getting "Fat fries" instead of Fish 'n Fries

Pros/cons:
They only play country music, which for those who aren't fans, kind of gets very annoying, very fast; You're better off going to Montana's. They also have a projector that displays a video of a fire on a wall.

Would I suggest it? No, but to each his own
