Review Prospector Restaurant - Thunder Bay

We normally go a few times a year. We were very weary on going as we heard the salad bar was gone after reopening from Covid closures. Rest assured! It's still amazing. Instead of a salad bar, they bring your buns, soup and salad to your table. Our waitress was handsdown the definition of what customer service in the food industry is all about. She made two extremely tired parents first date night in a long time worth it and the food was soooo good!! Thanks again!

We had a great time eating at the Prospector Steak House on April 28, 2022. We were two families, 10 in total, including kids. The service was terrific. We arrived so late, and the restaurant was about to close; however, they went out of their way to deliver the food, and most importantly, the food was soooo tasty.

Again a rare 5 points and it's all about the great staff. The people here are friendly, efficient and serve promptly. They also give great recommendations if you are tossing up the options. There is only street parking available but there's lots all around the area. There is an accessible entrance and washrooms on the main floor as well as more available downstairs. I chose the lounge to sit as I like to watch a vibrant bar staff in action. The meal, beef bones with asparagus and a salad is my favorite. Prime rib is my next favorite but I felt like enjoying succulent beef bones. Along with the entree, I enjoyed a couple of their inhouse prints, the Padre Luchador mexican style beer and a Founders Amber which paired well with the beef dish. I finished with a specialty Grand Marnier Coffee and will try a sample flight of 3 of their beers for "dessert". A reasonable priced big meal for one with three drinks totalling at $70.00 taxes included. Yeah, went for the flight of Blueberry Wheat, Wall IPA and PAL light lager.

This establishment is absolutely marvelous, I love picking up my potato and meats combination meal from here and taking it back to the front garden of my 3x3 base. In addition the brew selection is tremendous and i enjoy getting tipsy with my mates Rodley and Joseigh. I've attached some imagery for your enjoyment .

Good service and food was quite good. The Fish n Chips was HUGE! I recommend this place

The best prime rib and mashed potatoes in town! The entire menu is chuck full of wonderful dishes to suit everyone’s taste preferences. Sadly there is no more salad bar, but you still get unlimited salad, soup and buns so you can’t go wrong. There have been some changes made inside. There is now a brew house side with a limited menu, in house draft beer as well as many other beverage choices to wet your whistle. The staff is wonderful as well! If planning on going in on the weekend, I suggest a reservation, they can be booked up.

So I would’ve given this review a 5 star and this is my first review ever. The fish and chips (Beer Battered Pickerel, Walleye for the people reading this that are from outside Ontario.) So far it’s the best I have had in the city of Thunder Bay…….. until I ended up finding 5 bones total. It’s not cheap here but it’s worth paying for if you don’t get the bones the Chef missed in your fish. Total turn off. And if it had of been a kid that choked on it who know what would of happened. Awesome fish if all the bones where removed as advertised. I’m still going back as my wife had a steak and it was pretty good as well. Keep up the good work, but I know you guys can be better! Cheers.

Had dinner there yesterday and everything was amazing! Service is great and food was delicious. Entrees comes with salad, soup and bread.. all unlimited. Recommend the prime rib, super juicy and soft!

I have never had a bad meal here. Always great service. The menu has lots of great choices to choose from, for everyone. The prime rib served here is literally to die for..it will keep you coming back over and over again. Juicy, tender and cooked to perfection. The aroma of fresh baked hot buns served with fluffy whipped garlic butter...you won't just eat one..yes again that good. Truly a wonderful place and great all around atmosphere! I highly recommend to try this place out.

Had dinner last night. I had the Sirloin steak (med rare) with garlic mash and veggies with the salad bar. The steak was beautifully done. The garlic mash was a little on the dry side but well seasoned. The salad bar in my oppinion is a bit sparce, could use more of a selection, the buns are still very good. I ordered a caesar for my beverage-it had way too much tobasco sauce, lacked clamato juice and was watered down with the ice, lacked vodka.... Also, the waitress was very pleasant and the gentleman with the blond hair working at the salad bar was very personable and friendly. :) the back room by the exit door was a tad drafty. overall had a great evening.

I went there for the customer appreciation night .I was expecting great prime rib and that's exactly what I got .perfect as always .. I was expecting some delay with the rush the staff was put under , but was pleasantly surprised at how well organized the staff was organized .. Our drinks were at the table within minutes of ordering , our food was perfectly timed giving us a chance to get settled in , and start enjoying them . Managers or owners not sure of who they were , stopped by the table for some quick conversation about our night and the meal to come which was very pleasant. All in all it was a very enjoyable meal and evening . Hats of to you Prospector Resturant and staff keep up the great work , and I will be certainly seeing you all again .... 10 out of 10 *****

Visited for a birthday celebration this past week. I have been here before and have had good meals. However I was not happy with the Rib Eye steak. I think the scale is broken when it comes to measuring the ounces. The steak was done perfectly but the taste was not good, meat was full of gristle and was not a good cut in my opinion. Everything things else was good from service to salad bar. Just the steak was disappointing. Would recommend to visit!

Went to the Prospector this week for my hubby's Birthday. Haven't been probably in a couple years. Not a huge fan of how they've changed the restaurant. It is more open, but personally I preferred the coziness of the nooks and smaller areas. The food and service was good but wow, the prices have gone up A LOT! The smallest steak on the menu, a 5 oz was $28.50! Good size for me but most men would probably still be hungry. Even the burger was $24!! I'm sorry, but that's a bit much for a burger! I know you get salad bar with it but it's not worth that much extra. And I have to say that the salad bar has shrunk! I used to look forward to the salad bar and buns (of course) but it was really disappointing. Not much selection, just basic toppings and only iceberg lettuce, which was pretty sad looking. Overall, not terribly impressed with this visit to the Prospector. Could've definitely gone somewhere a little more high end for the money spent.

...took my wife for an early Valentines supper since we will both be working, usually we are so incredibly impressed with the food and service, but not this time. Not really a fan of the new renovations as it is now incredibly dark in the seating area and not to mention having to be served your soup, at least when you served your own you could try to at least get some meat portion in the BEEF barley, my bowl had not one piece of meat in it. And let's talk about the vegetables, once upon a time you were served baby carrots, which were absolutely delicious, then we moved to a parsnip and carrot blend, which was alright, but just not the same. Now we move to yesterday's meal, you have decided to add sautéed onions and green peppers to the carrots, which for some would be fine, but my wife has an allergy to onions which meant we had to return her plate and await a new steak, I finished my meal before she even received her second plate. I think you need to list your vegetable on your menu so we can choose to omit them if there is something that people are allergic to or have a preference not to eat. Overall, our experience was not that great, and that is disappointing because we usually make this our "go to" place for date night, and have for over eight years...

great place, and great food. Had the small cut prime rib...it was done to perfection, salad bar and buns are the best.

I love The Prospector. The atmosphere, menu and staff are all top-notch. The salad bar is great, the buns are amazing and you can never get enough of their prime rib. Whenever we get visitors to Thunder Bay, The Prospector is on the agenda!

I've never been to the Prospector before. l decided to go a few days ago. So, l had the ribs, baked potato, small barley soup and a caesar salad. I really didn't like the way they prepared the ribs. They were fatty and the barbecue sauce was trerible but the other food was edible. The cocktails were amazing!!! Yep!

excellent food excellent atmosphere and excellent staff what more can be said one of the best if not the best restaurants in thunder bay!

Awesome!!! Never disappoints! The salmon was to die for, and I wish I could bake buns like that. Super friendly staff, right to the guy who poured my soup for me.

Disappointed with menu. Prices going up & not as good. I don't like that the buns are out & can be handled. I suggest they bring a plate of buns to each table. With More buns on request. People fill bags & purses. Classless!

A great big Thank you goes out to the Prospector. On July 27th, my parents went to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. We snuck in early and decorated a table for them with balloons and stuff. Not only did they let us, the staff treated them to dessert, and sang "You are my Sunshine" to them which I found out about afterwards. The meal was fantastic and the staff made the evening so great for them, they will remember it always. They went above and beyond anything we asked so again thank you for making this night special for them.

Salad bar was pathetic. No labels on the dressings. Not much for cheese besides grated marble and cottage cheese? Bowls were empty. Area messy. No spinach. No romaine. Just one bowl of mixed greens. HUGE chunks of red onion. Pasta salad empty. Pffffft. The chicken parmesan and Shrimp au gratin was good. I miss the Kegs salad bar.
