Review Sovereign Room - Thunder Bay

This is obviously the place to be!! We got the last table on a Saturday night, it was so busy!! We only stopped in for a drink but will definitely be back for food. Service was great, atmosphere was awesome. Can’t wait to try some of their delicious looking food!

Had dinner there; At $20 for a burger + fries, it can be a bit pricey. Service was great, and enjoyed the atmosphere on a nice summer evening.

The now-defunct Where to Eat in Canada recommended the Sovereign Room and with good reason. We shared the cauliflower bites which were fried in the most delicious zesty, lemony coating paired with a lovely dipping sauce as well as the insanely indulgent duck confit poutine which currently shared top spot for not luxurious and rich poutine I've had with a camembert poutine I once had. The duck is generous and the gravy is deeply flavoured. The fries themselves are mind-blowingly good. To finish of this rich meal, I recommend the Dante's Peak cocktail, it is such a creative cocktails, so light and refreshing, but also causes the same effect as a grappa of cutting through the full-bellied feeling. The service was also incredibly kind, rapid, and thorough. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Too greasy, and the chicken was nasty.... The restaurant was super dirty...tables...chairs...

The Sovereign is a great place to go for food, drinks and conversation! Service is always spot on, food is sooo good and I love the on tap beer selection! Been going there for years and always had a good time!

I am sorry to say that that was nothing short of having nearly a racist experience. I do not appreciate being treated like a second class citizen, when I have money to buy good food. And I know they have a very excellent menu but I am sorry to say that the staff has attitude issues that are uncurable

Nice spot downtown Port Arthur. Bartender mixed some tasty drinks and the food was very good. Our server was excellent.

I really enjoyed this place. I ordered the fried chicken which I would definitely recommend. I also really enjoyed the atmosphere which was trendy and relaxed.

Love this place, been many times and never a bad experience food is always awesome, and the fried chicken is some of the best I’ve ever had.

Loved, loved, loved the pizza. Great place and very friendly staff.

Came in to check out the new menu. If you liked the sov then there should be no disappointment. Come check out Sov on Red River. Now with more duck. The duck sausage was great but the real star is the butternut squash. Creamy and smooth. The lamb is also a worth while try. Who needs knives when you can pull that bone straight out. Shoutout to the kitchen crew and their tasty treats.

The first night we went we sat for 30 mins and nobody talked to us, not even said hi. And we really wanted to try it! We went to the bartender and he told us food closed 10 mins ago but we could still get drinks.. we really wanted food so left. The next night we came back and had excellent service and the food and beer was amazing! Experience I guess is just based on your server.

Went there for burgerz and beerz with a large group. Service was fast and friendly, and the food was awesome. I'd definitely recommend trying this place out if you haven't already

Food was good but since when do you charge extra for takeout. Usually get a discount. 10% charge for takeout.

Frequent diners. We have had wonderful meals here, had to wait for a table, but worth the wait Great service! If you like microbreweries, you will love sleeping giant breweries on tap
The menu is good, all of it, we have tried everything!
Al, is a wonderful chef, be prepared to wait and soak up the atmosphere, if you are in a rush, go elsewhere

Deplorable service. Avoid this place unless you really have a burning desire to wait an hour for your meal on the world's most uncomfortable bench. Any restaraunt that can't get food out quickly should at least provide padded seating. And forget passing the time by having a conversation with your dinner companion; the acoustics are so awful that you have to yell to hear one another. There were only two in our party and we each ordered one of the standard menu pizzas -- not even a custom build. Another table of two was seated 10 minutes after us and got their meals (one of which was, ironically, pizza) long before we did. As a matter of fact, their meals were served even before our server assured us that our pizzas would be "right out". That turned out to be a euphemism for a further 15 minute wait. These pizzas take perhaps 10 minutes to cook? One showed up 10 minutes before the other one -- the Sovereign hasn't heard of the concept of serving all the customers at the table at approximately the same time? Did we get an apology for the ridiculous wait time? No. Offer of a free dessert perhaps, or free credit for our (non-alcoholic) beverages on the bill, as compensation? Again, no. We'll never be back.

Om Nom Nom. The "Sov" is awesome! The food here is excellent; I particularly enjoy the pizzas. The bar selection is brilliant as well, and I think it's safe to say that this is the best place to grab a beer in town! The atmosphere is great; the staff have hipster tendencies, obscure/ironic films are played by the bar, lovely wallpaper and some tacky artwork. I love it. It's a gem in Thunder Bay. The only downside I can think of is the size of the restaurant itself. And because of their success, the establishment fills up fast so you may have to wait for a table. It truly depends on the time you go though - weekend evenings are always busy. The wait is worth the quality you get though!

If you are visiting, it's a must!. Visiting family over May long weekend and we wanted to try someone no one's been and this was at the top of our list. Upon arrival this quaint little pub has limited seating but you'll find soon find out why when you taste the food! The four of us got cocktails and beers while sharing the mega sized charcuterie board. The large one will surely satisfy almost any craving and the assortment of meats and cheeses are varied and delicious. I had the special pasta of the day ..Mac and cheese which was creamy and rich but could have used a bit more bacon, as anything could! Our orders came lightning fast and the server had to apologize as she knew we didn't even finish our appetizer yet but that was no big deal. Next time we are coming back for the burgers or poutine!

WOWZERS. Thought this was just a bar, really need to get out more. The place is amazing!!

Had the pizza one night, another night had the wings and chicken. Never been disappointed.

Have to say, its kind of small inside, but the food makes it worth it!!

Bring back the curry chicken pizza!!!

User reviews. When I go downtown to eat I always think of this place. It can get a little lound so if you don`t like noise probably not the best restaurant for you but the food is so good. Great burgers, duck poutine, and a good selection of beer.

Perfect Addition to the Downtown Area. With the downtown Thunder Bay area lacking some new “hip and with it” restaurants, the opening of the Sovereign Room was one of the best things to have happened to the area. Besides the fact that it has brought a fresh, new crowd downtown, they are BY FAR one of the best locally owned restaurants anywhere in the City. The first thing you notice about the Sovereign Room is that it’s different. You have never seen anything like it. The staff are not overly friendly but definitely personable –which is good because I don’t like fake nice for a good tip, and the food is fantastic. It’s not gourmet, but definitely not dive bar, its upscale pub style food and its delicious. Their flavors and combinations are so unique but work so well. Not to mention their drink selection – they have beers I’ve never heard of before and you can’t find anywhere else in the city. I have nothing but good things to say about The Sovereign room, and it’s a frequent choice when I go out for lunch or dinner.

The jalapeno empanadas are my staple. The pizzas are delicious. Tried the veggie burger but was not impressed, was too crumbly. But overall i would say the sov is one of my top three places to eat in tbay.

Gem of a spot. This place was a perfect little haven for me while I was traveling through Thunder Bay. The food was delicious, creative, and really well-priced for its high quality. The folks who work there were really hip, hospitable, and friendly. I loved the atmosphere and the crowd there too. Definitely recommended.

The best cheat day ever! W.... The best cheat day ever!
We shared a zucchini fennel salad, the duck poutine and a veggie pizza. The service was great, the atmosphere was friendly and the food and prices are competitive. High class food with great prices, I see great things for this wonderful place. Can't wait till next time to try something else on the menu.

Love the food and is one of the best spots in town. Service is usually good, but I am often met with a lot of attitude when I order water (as the DD). Despite all of the gender positive messages in the female bathroom, some of the waitresses spend way more time being nice to male customers and rude to female ones. Much kinder service at the Madhouse.

Wow! Please don't get put of by the pub atmosphere. The food was simply the best we have had on our trip across the country. We had the crab cake, nachos, goat cheese and panchetta pizza and a poutine. The crab cakes and the pizza are entrees that became the benchmark for all meals to come.

Was meh. Duck confit poutine tasted like KFC gravy and wasn't hot enough to melt the rubbery cheese curds, which weren't true cheese curds to begin with. Wasn't impressed.

Went here with my boyfriend and was not very pleased. Food was generously covered in what tasted like McDonald's honey and it was a loud environment. Overall my biggest complaint was the seats which were very uncomfortable.

Gross food. After a friend suggested this restaraunt and reading the good reviews I went.
It was a waste of money, the Jalapeno Empanada's tasted like pizza pockets I Know good empandas and this doesn't even come close to an a real empanda
I was not impressed at all

Amazing Burger!!. Check out the burger at this place, because it's amazing! Home made, thick and juicy, on a good kaiser bun. Fries look home made (not sure), and taste great. Home made ketchup as well.

Duck confit poutine was pretty good. Mixed reviews on this one - I loved it, my girlfriend wasn't really a fan.

Their drink special chalkboard is cool, with a large selection.

We'll be returning for sure.

Winner. Great job on winning top chef Thunder Bay award. So nice to be done by smaller restaurant and not a major chain. WOOO WHOOOO KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB.

I'll be back.... This gastropub has an interesting décor including exposed brick and dark wood furniture with booths lining one side of this long narrow restaurant, ending at the bar. The bathrooms are found at the bottom of a steep, curved staircase near the entrance that splits. Men’s is on the left, women’s on the right. It’s very tiny and covered in graffiti, but serves it’s purpose.

The sandwich board outside lists the specials, which tonight included Rabbit on Toast and a Ricotta Gnocchi Pasta. The menu has quite a variety of dishes with a gourmet flare at very reasonable prices. We were keen to try a bunch of the options like the Sovereign Burger, Jalapeño Empanadas, Chorizo and Sweet Potato Latkas, Duck Confit Poutine or the many Pizza options. We decided to try the Duck Confit Poutine and Spanish Pizza. At $11 and $13 respectively, we didn’t expect the serving sizes to be substantial and thought we might order a 3rd dish if we were still hungry. But between the two of us, we could not finish the dishes. They were both delicious!

Others in our party opted for the burger, served on a homemade bun that held together well. It was moist, well seasoned and described by a few of them as the best burger they’d ever tasted. It came with a plate full of fries and few could finish their meal.

Another friend ordered Cajun Chicken Wings and a Caesar Salad. The chicken wings came on a huge platter with a small side salad and the Caesar Salad was served with a whole poached egg on top and a few strips of bacon. Both were very tasty and large portions.

They offer a wide selection of beers and the waitress was very knowledgeable, helping patrons pick a beer that suited their tastes.

All in all, we had a fantastic experience – great food, huge portion sizes and friendly service at a fantastic price. I look forward to trying more dishes on our next visit.

It's simply delicious! Fabulous!

My Favourite. This place is my new favourite. Everything I've tried so far is awesome (pizza, poutine, salad, fried chicken, burger, chicken wings, and nachos). The best dish for me is the chicken wings (chipotle apple BBQ, not breaded).

Big City Food, Small City Charm. I'm a Thunder Bay expatriate who's lived in Montreal for just under a decade. Whenever I'm in T. Bay it doesn't take long before I find myself at the Sovereign Room with my belly full of beer and great food. This place is a gem. Great beer selection, great classed-up pub fare and comfort food (think duck confit poutine, pizza, amazing burgers) that in my opinion would easily hold up in Montreal or any bigger, foodier city. The big difference is that it's all to be had for ridiculously-reasonable Northern-Ontario prices. And served with exuberance and a complete lack of pretension.

Pubs with dynamic menus of fancy poutine and pork belly that play indie rock, bake their burger buns and smoke their bacon in-house are now everywhere in big cities. But this place is a game changer for Thunder Bay, and what's amazing is that they do it really well...1400 km from Toronto.

Pub Style food at its best!. Been to the Sovereign Room on several occasions mostly just to
try they're selection of Imported Beer (Including Guiness on tap).
The environment is quite elegant and unique. When I tried the food
for the first time I was hooked. You can get pizza and poutine just about
anywhere in town but not like the kind you can get here. The best in
town! No word of a lie! The jalapeño empanadas are incredible and I will continue to
eat them regardless of how full I am. I always end up leaving there full and
paying 25 bucks for a couple of drinks (usually ceasars) and entrees.

Delicious food! It has a nice pub feel to it and I can picture it turning into a popular local hang-out at night since it's so close to Lakehead's campus. I have been pretty impressed by Thunder Bay restaurants (even if some of them are on the pricey side) - the downside is probably the slow service though.
