Review Phoenix Restaurant - Thornhill

This restaurant is the latest one to open the dining area compared with the others similar. Only one table has customer when I go in, many chairs are still put on top of the dining table. Does it help the customer to feel the food taste better? However, it was in average.

Very good service and HK style food especially the pork jowl rice and sizzling plates

I have been a long time customer. I don’t mind that the price isn’t the cheapest because I like the food here. Order the buy 1 get 1 free promote yesterday and got the seafood pineapple fried rice. The rice had tiny bit of fake crab meat and a bit of tiny shrimp meat. 99% plain rice. It was pathetic. I want you to know that your decision to be cheap lost you a customer for life.

Stopped in as a recommendation from a friend of mine - was not disappointed. Typical cha chaang teng (茶餐廳) with lots of selections on the menu including breakfast!!! Food was fresh and decent sized portions. Covid protocols were in place and followed as well. Environment was clean and staff were friendly. Great menu with lots of pictures and easy to read and understand.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE at this location. They messed up with my order. I ordered baked chicken steak with fried egg (paid extra for it) and seafood fried rice. They gave me spaghetti instead. The seafood fried rice had ONE shrimp and few pieces of crab sticks, mostly just rice and nothing else. I even tipped them with takeout order. Very disappointing.

I just received my order through skip the dishes. The worst food I have ever tried. I ordered fried shrimp and egg sauce with rice noodles. The shrimp is not fried and the dish looks disgusting and no taste. I just dumped it, now I have to look for something else to eat. Never again will I order from this restaurant

Was just here for Mother's day brunch. The food and service was good all the way til when we were about to leave. There was this one lady (who may be more senior) who kept coming to our table to collect dishes. Seriously we were packing to go and would take max 20 seconds to get up to leave, she asked me to hand her one plate, and then kept standing there and asked me to hand her another plate. I was very annoyed and my husband almost didn't want to leave any tip, but I made him still leave 15% because it is unfair to penalize the other servers for that one lady's action. By the way, the washroom was also very dirty at 9:50 am in the morning which was a surprise because you would think we were one of the first ones in the restaurant. Quite disappointed. Instead of having a lineup of waiters saying thank you on our way out, please clean the washrooms and pay attention to how senior servers are treating customers....

Standard HK Cafe fair with decent food. Prices are higher than other HK Cafe in the area, but portions are slightly bigger. There is a discount for paying in cash for take-out (Not sure about dine-in). I would recommend the Hainanese Chicken Rice and the cold milk tea.

2017/03/05
Phoenix labels itself as a Hong Kong style restaurant. Well, I don't know anything about Hong King restaurants, but I do like the variety of things that they have on their menu. They also have a Morning Breakfast section which gives me the impression that Phoenix could also be considered a diner. The restaurant itself is nice and roomy, with very high ceilings.

This evening there were three of us for dinner. We each ordered one dish and then shared. We had:

G14 Fried Noodle with Chicken in Satay Sauce
G16 Fried Rice Noodle with Beef in Soya Sauce
Y19 Pad Thai with Shrimp, Chicken, Bean Sprout and Roasted Peanuts

Each of the plates was $10.50, and they all had a good portion of food. Our favourite was the beef dish, since it had the most flavour. Although still good, our least favourite was the chicken satay: some of the fried noodles seemed a bit undercooked and were a bit crunchy. Probably supposed to be this way, but it was also difficult to eat with chopsticks.

We capped off the meal by sharing a dessert: Waffle with Chocolate Ice Cream. For me the waffles were a bit dry, but when combined with the ice cream, made for a sweet bit with a bit of crunch.

This place is so inexpensive, gets you full in no time with the rice dishes and noodles. My favourite is the chicken with mayo and teriyaki sauce. Only downside is that they take cash-only which could be an inconvenience. Desserts are also very interesting and pretty to look at.

I almost always default to their porkchop. Deep-fried. Crunchy. Juicy. Yum!

One time, we decided to check out their breakfast offering. Time to switch things up, eh? Well, after much internal debate, I decided to have ramen soup… with porkchop! I just couldn’t resist. It was the same generous size porkchop and still had some crunch when served (of course, it turns soggy after a bit). The ramen was just ok and the broth hits the spot. Overall quite satisfying especially for me, the porkchop-lover!

Hubby ordered chicken steak and eggs which was also a good portion and quite tasty.

Grandma ordered a sandwich. The girls had a more traditional, American treat—waffles with PBJ! So, see, the menu IS quite varied.

Good place to go if you can't decide on what to eat and don't wanna leave a large dent in your wallet. This place is a step up from the classic Hong Kong-style cafe, in that they try to offer more interesting and unique options. For example, their latest addition are egg waffles with ice cream (reminiscent of Wooffles and Cream). The ice cream was fine, but the waffles were crispy and some parts were slightly burnt! Otherwise, the food is pretty standard and you pay for the quality you get. I do love their colourful, pictorial menu!

I visited Phoenix again, this time for breakfast. Breakfast service ends at 11am, so you will see a big influx of customers around 10:45am. If possible, get a table by 10:30am, or you will risk having to wait in line and missing out on the morning special. I ordered the Satay Beef Macaroni breakfast, and for under $5, it also came with toast and a drink. Pretty good food for an amazing value!

If I could write a review that consisted of only 5 words this would be it:
Order Hainan chicken and rice.
I don't fancy HK cafe food. It does nothing for me. However, the Hainan chicken here is always so tasty and the rice is very flavourful.

Great HK Style food. This place is great for some Asian soul food. Their HK Style Cafe food is pretty yummy and quick. The service at this location is also not bad, compared to the other ones. I would travel a bit further just because of their service and cleanliness. Their iced coffee is delish! I definitely recommend this place!

Stingy Portion of Sauce Given. Their Hainan chicken or white chicken is great but when you buy it for take out they barely give you the ginger sauce. It is as big as one tablespoonful in one tiny plastic container. Hainan chicken is not hainan chicken without the generous portion of sauce that you enjoy it with. Will not buy that again.

This is definitely a spot that I will drop into in the future for a quick and delicious meal! The service is relatively fast and the environment is casual. It’s great for a one-person meal or to catch up with friends.

My search for perfect Hong Kong Cafe continues, Phoenix Restaurant was one that I stumbled upon from my on going journey. There are several locations for Phoenix Restaurant, and when I tweeted asking my followers about the restaurant, someone told me this was the best location- so off I went. This location is fairly new, with high ceilings and brightly lit with large windows. As expected, on a weekend lunch hour- the restaurant was filled with people wanting to get some food in their stomach. Even though there were a lot of people waiting, table turn over rates were pretty fast. Within waiting around 10 minutes, we were seated in a booth by the window.

The chicken was tender, juicy and flavourful. It tasted great on its own so I didn’t use very much of the ginger sauce or the sour garlic sauce it was served with.
