Review Dakota Cafe - Sydney

Diana Marat
Located on the grounds of the Victoria International Airport. It is located in the Victoria Flying Club's building and it is a short distance from the British Columbia Aviation Museum. There is ground level seating inside and patio seating outside. Small planes are parked outside and there is an excellent view of all planes taking off and landing at the airport. Casual seating, friendly staff and a good selection of eats. Daily specials of soups, wraps and other foods. The restaurant is open to the public but is used by the Flying Club, airport staff and others interested in flying. Lots of interesting flight related pictures and memorabilia.

Me and my friend went to check this place out after seeing news about it, and were impressed by the speedy and friendly service. We tried their famous wonton soups (chicken and seafood), and one large bowl was all we needed for our meal! It's definately the best I've ever tasted, the fresh handmade wontons are so good! We'll definately come back to try some other stuff. Just seeing what other people were getting was tempting in itself!

Truly a great little Cafe. Patio area is nice to sit on. Food is excellent! Love that the wontons in the wonton soup are hand made! (Only available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday-get there early as they do sometimes run out!) The burgers and Onion rings are awesome! The owners take pride and joy in their Cafe. They go above and beyond! Making sure to take care of their customers!

reasonable price, quiet with great customer service, hidden away below the airport tower, have view of the flight club training, would have given 5 stars if parking lot wasn't full and their desserts not look so very much store bought their smoked salmon shrimp club was very generous and onion rings extra crispy will definitely return

I like visiting this place on a sunny day (sit outside and watch airplanes flying away). My favourites are burger and fish & chips. They are pretty good. Their service is very good as well (especially weekend staff). This place is a hidden gem. :)

A perfect place for a relaxing brunch. If you’re on a road trip or just got off from the ferry, this cafe is such a convenient place to visit. The decor is not flamboyant but artsy, hand-drawn by the owner. The staff are all very friendly, hard-working and humble, almost feels like home. There’s a generous amount of food on the plate and totally worth the price! The presentation is absolutely stunning, as well as the flavour — blown my mind. The menu is cohesive and full of healthy choices, whatever you pick would always be delicious!

I was told about this place for their amazing wonton soups with either seafood or chicken. It's only available for lunch on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. It's loaded with veggies and it is awesome. Comes in 3 sizes.

They're food is amazing and the atmosphere is great, but the staff need a wake up call. I tried to place a 12pm pick up for lunch at 1130, but the person who answered the call said the kitchen is closed on Sundays...? Then why are you open?

Very basic food. Unattractive presentation.

I've never written a negative review of an establishment but the service today at the Dakota Cafe was NOT good.  Maybe it's changed hands but the service was grumpy, rushed, and not friendly.  The young woman who cleared our table didn't speak a word just gestured what she wanted.  We use to love going to this little place because of all the plane activity but will not be back.  Too bad because it use to be great.  Maybe they were just having a bad day.

never have i been so put off with service like i had today!A friend and i ordered seafood wontons only to find a plastic bread clip in mine. The staff denied it was from their kitchen but yet admitted it has happened to them before. Why could they not just come to admit that they were at fault in the end i still paid my full bill minus a measly 10 percent..i will never go there again.

Just seems phoned in.. Everything about this place seems half-ased. The "currey soup" was the most pointless endeavour I've ever seen, the Rueben was rubbery and eveything just seemed unappealing... It's a shame really, as I;ve found that little cafe's like this can be hidden nuggets of pure joy sometimes. Sadly, not in this case.

Great diner breakfast! All day breakfast on Sunday with a good menu selection. I had an omelette which was perfect ... My mums scrambled eggs "looked like " an omelette too... I'm not convinced any restaurant can really do proper scrambled eggs ...the toast was perfectly toasted ... That's how I test breakfast places ! Not kidding. We'd go back here. Service v friendly.

Dakota Cafe is "Oh So Sweet". Although Dakota Cafe is always filled wall to wall, I don't believe enough people know about this awesome restaurant! The location and staff are great. You have a gorgeous view across teh airport, to the hills and mountains beyond. The staff are always quick and always have a smile. Okay, now those two important points are aside. Let's get to the meat of the review. The food. It is one of my favorite restaurants in Sidney and the surrounding area. It has one of my absolutely favorite burgers that hits the spot everytime! It's called the "Oh So Sweet" Burger, and you had better believe it! It's a hand made patty, not the revolting sausage tasting, biscuit hard, frozen patties some places weakly attempt to pawn off as "food" *cough* woodpulp! *cough*. It's always a tender, well seasoned patty, lightly chared at the fringes to give it the open-flame taste, and juicy on the inside. On top, you are entreated to a layer of sweet/tangy carmelized onions, covered by melted, shredded, cheddar and swiss I think. a little bit of tomato, fresh red onion, and lettuce, (NOT iceberg thankfully) are present to justify having some "veggies" with your meal. a small amount of mayo on top of all that. The bun, is a light, whole weat bun, that is lightly buttered and toasted, and always fresh, that I've had over the past 8 years. The whole combination is a flavorful, succulent, pleasing combination. The fries... I would have to comfortably say that the fries at Dakota Cafe are probably the best on the peninsula. They are the kind that are rough and crispy on the outside, and tender and delicious on the inside. Maybe not the healthiest of fries... but if you want fries, there is nothing more satisfying. I've also had other items on their menu, such as their War Wonton soup, which is fresh and tasty every time. I see many, many partons ordering a huge bowl of it at lunch. To sum up the several items on the menu that I've enjoyed, the food is of a high caliber that might almost be unexpected from an out-of-the-way restaurant. All in all, I recommend Dakota's to just about everyone I know who eats food. The Dakota Cafe is located at the foot of the Victoria Airport Control tower, in the same building as the Victorai Flying Club. 101-1852 Canso Road, Sidney, B.C.

Went there for breakfast in Father's Day. Poor service no smiles from waitress and no refills during entire meal. Waitress serving people who came in after us before; us food overcooked; the only smile I saw on our waitress was when she was texting behind the till. Brought PB and Jam to table next to us but not us. Slow service. Took long time for food to arrive, over half hour and the restaurant wasn't busy. Needless to say when our waitress provided tipi g instructions at the till, she got a zero tip.

Reasonable price, good value. A great spot to watch the activity at the airport. The menu offering is very good as vegetarians can usually find a few items which will appeal.<br/>Their WonTon of Wednesday & Friday is worth the drive.

Went there for the first time in many many years. Was wonderful. We sat on the patio which was basically on the runway. Having a toddler it was get entertainment for her. Nice fenced in patio. I had the coastal club. It was really good. My husband had a eggs bennie. He said it was good and really enjoyed it. The highlight of the place is the excellent kids menu. Everything from pancakes to French toast. As well as the usual fair. The menu in a whole looked fantastic and all the food we saw coming out to the tables around us all looked good and fresh. I would say if you like planes and good food it is worth checkin this place out. The kids young and old will love it.

This is definitely the airports best kept secret! Great food, excellent service, and always something to see on the flightline. The Won Ton soup is the best I've ever had! Many times I've been here and there is a line up. Any wait is well worth it!

Fantastic Food! This place is consistent and has the best Wonton soup around. A great place to go and have lunch.

Good!. We went here for brunch. I had a skillet, which was warm, not hot.. but still very tasty. The menu had a good variety, food took a while, but they have a tiny kitchen with a busy cafe, defiantly will go back! Good prices!!
