Review Maria's Souvlaki - Sydney

This restaurant is a little bit of heaven! I highly recommended it!!! Not only their food is wonderful and tasty but this family operation is warm and welcoming! Just had my birthday there this past week. So many great menu items, yes even for the veggies like me! I love their spanakopita. It has to be the best on the island! It's like coming home!!

Service was great, food was even better. Lamb cooked just right, tender and juicy. Nice patio, and short walk to the water front. Awesome place to go in Sidney area.

This was the worst Greek Restaurant i have ever been at. The Calamari were over breaded. The Greek salad was 15.95 for what other places would be a small plate. The hummus was the only good thing. I wanted the lamb skewers but it was 11.95 for 1 skewer and it came with nothing. No salad no rice. Crazy overpriced!! We left feeling completely unsatisfied. Will not come back at all!

Overall pretty decent. Calamari was well cooked and juicy. The batter wasn’t too heavy but could have done with an extra few seconds in the fryer. Was also surprised that the skewer was literally just.. a skewer. We ordered the lamb skewer for $11. Presuming there might be a small salad or even a little bit of rice. But nope. Just a skewer. That one was a bit of a surprised. Well cooked but not sure I’d pay $11 again for one skewer.

I've been coming here since I was a kid (I'm 30) as far back as I can remember they have been serving delish Greek food since I started developing taste buds. I can't recall a single bad experience, always tasty, always a great way to treat myself after a day walking around Sidney. Besides the garlic breath, 5 stars all the way ;) JK Garlic breath rocks.

Dry, over-priced food. The pita bread was chewy and burnt. Not sure why you can't make the pita bread right, it takes a very short amount of time. The chicken was overcooked and dry as well. Very disappointed will not be going back.

Wonderful staff, fantastic souvlaki and some of the best waffle fries in the city. Absolutely recommend!

Best greek food on the island! I have been going here for 20 years since i played minor hockey. Every time we go to Sidney this is a must stop!

After getting off the ferry, we decided to stop for a late lunch at Maria’s Souvlaki Greek Restaurant. We’d seen it last time we were in Sidney so figured it was worth a try based on the good ratings. We dropped in on a Saturday (around 1:15pm). The inside has a ton of seating along with a couple picnic tables outside. Service is pretty non-existent; you go up to the counter and order. Older lady working the front wasn’t very friendly or helpful.

Vary good food but the ordering process, paying and getting your food is a little aquward but food is good. My favourite is the gyro with Greek salad.

Came here randomly with my 6 year old daughter on a quick trip through Sidney. The place is cute, nothing fancy and you order up front at the ‘bar’. The selection is good and decent prices too. I ordered myself a chicken souvlaki wrap with half a Greek salad and some popcorn shrimp for my daughter.
Everything came out quickly and service was good, but again, simple, as you order and pay at the bar.

The Greek salad was OK But way too full of raw white onions which I couldn’t stomach. The wrap was really tasty but a little too much sauce, it made it a little messy. The chicken itself was delicious!
The popcorn shrimp was a decent sized portion and my daughter ate the lot so they just have been good!
Id definitely come back again if I was in the mood for Greek!

A tried and true family-owned favourite in Sidney.
The falafel is my go-to, and the calamari is crispy (not greasy) and delicious. The skewers are not a filling meal - I recommend a souvlaki. Great for a quick a la carte meal. Order at counter and eat-in or take out and sit by the ocean (or grab n go for the ferry!). Setting is casual and clean. Patio is nice in summer months. Not inexpensive but reflected in quality and freshness (about $10 with tax for falafel souvlaki). Busy in evening with locals. A recommended stop for any visitor to Sidney.

The food at Maria's is ok, but outrageously expensive. There are no combos, no plates, and their strictly a-la-carte menu ensures no deals to be had. One would think at these prices you'd get more than just run-of-the-mill Greek food, but that's not the case. I'd just as soon go to Opa at the mall, at least you get decent value, and the quality and authenticity of the food is no different.

I am visiting this place since my school days with my friends and parents. this is my favourite place!!The food was superb...Ilove this restaurant...
Ehahaha
Great souvlaki. The meat is tender and the pita is really good. The ingredients are very fresh.

The donair isn't as good, but it's still pretty good. I've had better before. Waffle fries are tasty as well.

Prices are acceptable.

Actually in some ways I am reluctant to tell anyone about this place because it's fantastic. The decor is OK but don't be discouraged because the food is frankly exceptional. This place has a real family feel with an outdoor sitting area but in winter there is a fireplace inside to keep the cold dampness at bay. But that's not what you're looking for it's the food, the Greek Gods would be proud it's amazing. Calamari to souvlaki I don't thinks there is better Greek Restaurant in Greater Victoria. Take some time and check this place out, if it has a line wait. If the Greek Gods like it you will. Opa.

Be warned; once you eat tomatoes here you can't eat tomatoes anywhere else! Maria picks the best of the best, of the best for produce! Waffle fries are a must. And I appreciate the generous amount of feta on their Greek salad! My partner and I love this place because as veggie/ carnivore couple neither of us complain!

Good little Greek place, always hot fresh food. Always go here when i'm craving calamari. For the price it's a really good value on what you get. Make sure to check this place out if you're in the area!
Greg
Mousaka. Very good, fresh tasting bechamel. Best mousaka I have found on the island.
Thecrusader99
Good Food But.... I have been to Maria's many times for souvlaki and other items. The calamari us getting to be on the greasy side. Last couple of times, the calamari had a puddle of oil at the bottom of the plate.
Brighidoftheforge
Good prices, yummy food. Casual dining with cafeteria style ordering.

Amazing food always!!! Consistently good service with a smile, hot fresh food , pleasant atmosphere and good value. Souvlaki with Caesar gone Greek is my favorite. I eat there almost every time I am in Sidney!
Cheryl
Fantastic! Best Gyros I've had since the Danforth. I had heard this place is good and I am so happy to agree! My friend had the chicken souvlaki and she loved it. I can't wait to go back.
YRS
Very good souvlaki, but the Greek salad was rather prosaic.
Danielle
Chicken Souvlaki. So good! Would definitely eat here constantly if I lived in the area!
Chefassassin
Bloody marvellous!. Simple food done right. If you are looking to go for a drive on a nice spring evening, consider cruising out to Sidney for a souvlaki it is worth the drive from Victoria.
Shove Bug
The best calamari you will ever have! Huge pieces and TENTACLES! Best Greek eats in Sidney by a landslide, lovely staff, great family run restaurant!

Been here many times! Kalamari is amazing. Tzaziki is flavourful and lamb is tender. Portions are perfect! Fun place to eat would definitely recommend!!

THE BEST. My girlfriend and I come here for easily half of the nights we get dinner together. The people there are friendly and helpful, the food is UNREAL, the prices are reasonable, the portions are great, and the service is quick. AWESOME.
Femiluv
Yummy food. The fries were soo good, the chicken skewer was outstanding and the gyro was out of this world! Too bad it's in Sidney, however, I don't mind the trip from Victoria, just for an amazing meal. Our server was very nice, however, the girl who took our order was not.
Fablesandfortunes
Delish. Open a location in Victoria please!!! So far everything we have had is delicious!
Rmtawtel
Donair was probably one of the best I've had. Not too salty with just enough flavour. Greek salad had little imagination though, it was quite bland. Main server was very sweet and attentive, but the girl who took our order shouldn't be allowed to interact with customers. She made us feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable.
Blizzer
Amazing food!. The food is awesome, especially the falafel souvlaki. The service we get is usually great, but to whoever the girl was who was taking our order this time should not be allowed to work in the service industry. She literally did not say a word the entire time my sister and I were ordering, and not only that, but she had a horrible scowl on her face as if we were there to tell her we ran over her dog or something. Relax girlie.
Jenny Lemarc
Fun Place!. Food and wine pairing is a fabulous thing, but perhaps even better: a culinary experience combined with a world-class

We have eaten at Marias for years and it is our favourite resraurant in Sidney. This is a family run business and the.food is prepared while you wait. This is the best value for money in town

Good!. Maria's is always one of the eating places on the list when we travel to Sidney, fast and great food, makes this restaurant a family favorite. I would certainly recommend it!
Delicious!!

Worthy of many repeat visits. Recently while visiting Sidney, we enjoyed our lunch at Maria's so much that we returned for dinner the same day. Now back at home, we wish Calgary had a similarly excellent casual restaurant for well-priced, delicious Greek food. The menu at Maria's is not as extensive as at full-service Greek restaurants. But, who needs more choice when one can enjoy souvlaki with huge chunks of tender, perfectly grilled lamb with garlicky tzatziki and a fresh Greek salad. The food was so fresh, in fact, it seemed the usual preservatives (benzoates, sulphites, etc.) that I react to at most restaurants was not required.
Lorraine
We eat here often. It's fast and very good, however Maria if you are reading these please chop up the tomatoes a little smaller for your souvlaki's.

Great place to eat in Sidney if you love Souvlaki. You need loads of napkins but it's very good.
Honey
Delicious Greek food. Best Souvlaki in town, hands down. It's reasonably priced, portions are a good size and service is friendly. It's not a fancy place, but it doesn't need to be - the food speaks for itself. It's worth the drive out to Sidney, especially if you're on the way to the ferry. They do take-out as well, but no delivery. You may want to avoid Maria's on Thursday nights in the summer though, because the crowds for the Sidney market can mean a wait of an hour or more.
Rowen
Fantastic Souvlaki, Informal relaxed seating: sit where you want, Lamb is done on a kabob and is highly recommended. Vegetarian options aren't very exciting

Loved this place! Great food on the fly. Chicken souvlaki and houmous were great. Order an extra pita with the houmous!!
L.Millar
Fresh and delicious every time. It's a bit pricy but that doesn't stop us from eating there when we feel like a really good souvlaki!
Discoveryisle
Gotta get there early!. We have been loyal customers for many years, and love the food. The Souvlaki's are all great - my favourite is the Gyro! You don't need to add salad, as the souvlakis are full of all the greek veggies!
However, I have been disappointed to arrive at 7:30pm and be told that the deep fryer is shut down - so NO CALAMARI at 7:30??? at a GREEK restaurant?
And I find it a bit pricey for a deli-style restaurant.
Schmoniko
Prices keep going up while the taste keeps going down. Been going for years, but now keep regretting I gave them yet another chance... Precooked, dried out pork souvlakia, drab tzatziki, tasteless tomatoes... Take your money and have some Thai across the street.... Not going back, sorry, too much $$$ and not enough taste...
The Daily Forager
A Quick Stop On The Way To The Ferry.. :)

A good substitute for the regular fast food joints and it's licensed.

Try a Donair or Chicken Souvlaki in a Pita.

• Average food • Quick, friendly Service • Relatively Clean
Justin Kissinger
One of a growing number of restaurants in sidney that dont get their menu ideas from the frozen food section... calamari rocks
Noslokire
Nice.... Was looking for a simple light meal and thats exactly what I got. Service was good, and even my Italian in-laws loved the place, which is rare for them to both like a place.
Flyboy604
Quick and good for lunch. They don't do rice though.

Always good!. I often go to Maria's, the service is always good, the food is quick and tasty, i love the chicken souvlaki, the veggies are always fresh and the tzaziki is delicious! The owner's always are very welcoming!!

Great food and excellent fast service

Standard 'Greek' menu, family run, very popular, the prices are good

Cannot beat the spannakopita wraped lamb souvlaki or baklava. Everything at maria's is great!
FattyP
The best wrapped Souvlaki's!. I know, I know, it's not quite in Victoria but it is worth the trip to Sidney just to eat the best Calamari in town! The Souvlaki's are great and always filling. The salads are well portioned and if you can't decide between the Greek or the Ceasar, you can have both with a Ceasar gone Greek!
The Tzatziki and Humous are fresh made on premises as are the deserts... do yourself a favour and have the Baklava (unless of course your allergic to nuts then too bad so sad for you) it's divine!
I've worked in a few restaurants and and seen more than a few kitchens in my day and the cleanliness at Maria's is so far above any I have ever seen! Gordon Ramsey would be impressed!
Please note: There is no rice served here except in the rice pudding which I would never eat until I had Maria's. I am now one of the converted.
Go there... now!
Eating In Vancouver
Maria's is a casual Greek restaurant with relaxed informal indoor and outdoor seating. Since it is a deli style establishment, customers place their orders at the counter and have a seat. Here's one of the must try items, their homemade...
