Its a little hard to find, being on 153, and the sign is small, but the Filipino community has certainly found Archie's! We arrived at 1 on Sunday and the place was packed. Still it did not take long to get seated and fed. Like most Filipino places that I have visited, no one has lost a lot of sleep over ambiance or edible flower garnishes (does anyone still do that?). No rather, this is a place for family and friends to eat hearty food and make a lot of noise enjoying each others company. Not that we were uncomfortable, and service was spot on. I had Kare-kare, one of my favorite Filipino dishes and this one may be second only to my partner's home made version! The meat was tender and tasty and the peanut sauce was excellent. It came with rice (of course) and shrimp paste on the side. I let the shrimp paste alone (Filipinos may chose to rear up in horror upon reading this) as it is definitely not my favorite condiment. My partner ordered Bulalo, a dish that seems to be the whole reason for being of some restaurants in the Philippines. The broth was beefy and rich and the vegetables and meat were also solid contributors. I did not find a lot of the main character, marrow, in this bowl and they may just have been the luck of the ladle. Certainly, the marrow was contributing to the richness of the broth. Not expensive, even compared to other Filipino places. It was nice to see Archie, present and manning the stove as a dedicated chef/owner! We will be back!
