Perfect restaurant to visit after shopping at Guildford Mall. Location is very central and there's even a drive through Starbucks next to the restaurant. Many parking spaces available so you never have to worry about parking. The chicken teriyaki and salmon aburi sushi are so good I think they're the best I've ever tried. I also noticed they've added some dessert menu items recently and those cool drinks are great for the summer heat.
Visited for the first time in a few months and the food's gotten a huge upgrade. The new menu is awesome and the new special rolls taste fantastic! Prices are inexpensive too which is a huge bonus. Great restaurant for sushi
I loved my experience here! One of the nicest Japanese restaurants I've been too. Interior's really cool and there's plenty of space. They even have big tables on their second floor but I didn't get to experience that this time. Superb, quick service and lots and lots of mouthwatering food! I tried their stanley roll, california roll, gyoza, and tuna & salmon sashimi with my friend and they were all so good!! I would rate 10 out of 5 stars if I could! Really high quality food for an excellent price and very impressive.
Tengoku is great for fresh, creative sushi. I noticed the food's had a huge improvement recently and the updated menu has many tasty rolls and combos. If you want unique rolls, I highly recommend the new ones like the mega roll, passion roll, and stanley roll! This place now really stands out compared to all the generic, boring sushi in the city.
Faaantastic New Menu from the new Owners. We could hardly finish the Lunch Special. Great atmosphere with new Upholstery & floors. We will be back!
This is the best sushi in Surrey! The food here is so delicious and fresh. The prices are very affordable while the quality and taste are outstanding. Our server was very friendly and the food came out on time. I really love their rolls and spicy chicken karaage. Will be back more often!
It was reopened after long renovation, My friends and I decided to try it. We ordered quite a bit of foods. The menu was updated, prices were good, food was fresh and tasty. Love their spicy items.
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival everyone! If you're asian, I reckon you celebrated with a bevy of meat, wine, and a mooncake or two. With a couple of aunties breathing down your neck..."do you have a boyfriend?" "why aren't you married yet?" *averts eyes*. Well...my family is a bit different. We're pariahs. My "family" as in my mom, my dad, and I. I'll let you in on a little secret: we don't really spend time with any of our other family members. Sure, my dad calls his mom periodically...but that's about it. We like to keep to ourselves.
Given that we never get together with anyone else other than each other, we decided to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival at my Dad's favourite sushi restaurant: Tengoku! I haven't gone back to Tengoku in months. My last visit was in April!
Sidenote: I'm in desperate need of some gluten-free mooncakes. #cantasian
This visit to Tengoku got me thinking...is it Teriyaki Chicken or Chicken Teriyaki? I'm aware that the terms are used interchangeably, but is the former or latter grammatically correct? Does one take precedence over the other? (These are serious questions okay.) I don't think this question has ever been addressed before...what do you guys think? I mean, even google doesn't have an answer! And google has the answer to everything! (Sarcasm alert.) Raymond...you sure eat a lot of teriyaki, what do you think?
Why yes...I like to ponder about grammatical predicaments in my spare time. Between eating, netflix, and studying of course.
I read reviews from a couple places (google & Zomato)and alot of the reviews seemed to be bad. We decided to try the place anyway.
I can only say wow i was impressed!
Greeted immediately as we came in the door, seated right away.Comfortable seats, not those wooden bench booths with a thin mat. Water was brought to us right way without asking. We order a couple appetizers . They came out within minutes Hot and fresh. We ordered our dinner choices when the appetizers came. We had barley finished the appetizers, and the main courses were coming out. Everything tasted delicious and fresh. The Salmon and tuna nigiri sushi were perfect. One of the best boneless spicy chicken Karagee i have ever had. The vegetable &prawn tempura batter was light and crispy. Ebi sunomono, Very flavorfull Miso, a Large beef and veggi teriyak with rice and finally a Boston Roll.
One of the best Japanese food meals I have had in a long time, and I go to alot of places.
The servers were very friendly an attentive. took the time to recommend things from the menu, as well as friendly chat.
Then one of the best surprises All that food was only $42.
I definitely recommend this restaurant. way to go Tengoku!!
It's pretty good. After reading the reviews on here, I was hesitated to go here; but still decided to give it a try. It was better than expected. The food/ rolls are good as well as the services. Will come back!
Tengoku is my Dad's favourite sushi place. If I want to go somewhere else, he literally throws a fit. See what I have to deal with? ;). We've gone to Tengoku so many times that I've lost count. I reckon we've gone over 50 times! My dad orders the same thing every single time: The House Bento Box w/ beef teriyaki, tempura, and nigiri. Dads.
"Dad, why do you always order the same thing? You've never tried anything else!"
"That's my style. I find something that works, and I stick to it."
My favourite dish there is their tonkatsu (or chicken katsu!) It's amazing: thick cut, crispy, and loaded with sauce! If I want something lighter, I usually go for their salmon don!
Tengoku will always have special place in my heart. In 60 years I'll look back on to this place and remember it as the restaurant where my dad and I would go (almost) every week ;D
I love going to this restaurant! Such good food and it has reasonable prices! I recommend u go there because its ambiance is just so nice. My favorite thing to get there is the favourte combo
Lower Mainland Muncher
+3.5
Upon entering, I smelled something "fishy" in the air. I chose to ignore this as this restaurant has good late hours and no other sushi places nearby is open. The decor was very nice. The food and service was very good so I left a happy customer.
My go to sushi place. Very reliable for taste and variety. Not too far of a drive for myself, just an overall great place to get Japanese food. Prices are decent, which is a great plus and they give you what you pay for here. Especially love getting the lunch boxes here, every part of the box is just great. No stinginess here, just good quality and quantity. Also there chirashi don is amazing, filled with fish and lettuce that'll just fill you right up. So if your looking for good food along with filling your stomach up, come here for a great meal. Only problem I have with this place is sometimes they bring the food at different times, so someone at your table could possibly be waiting a considerable amount of time.
One of the better sushi restaurants in Surrey. This restaurant is spacious and one of the better sushi restaurants in Surrey. The menu has a lot of variety. Portions are not the biggest around but quality is consistent. I tried the calamari roll and it was average. Probably won't order that again. Toro Tataki was only OK in my opinion. However, salmon sashimi was fresh but thinly sliced compared to some other places. The restaurant overall is a tad bit on pricey side though. Seating is very comfortable here and parking is acceptable. Conveniently located near the Surrey Guildford mall.
Tengoku sushi was a place that my girlfriend and i went on for our first date. that was more than 2 years ago so we forgot the food was. We went here today for a nostalgic moment and it was pretty good. Entering the restaurant we noticed that the decor was very nice. Good atmosphere and the music was a plus with throwback songs. The service was decent. Our server seemed like she was in a bit of a rush. But it was fine considering how busy the place was. The tea that they gave us kind of tasted like popcorn. It was okay. Our food came in about 10 minutes. The dynamite roll came first and it was nice. The tempura was still warm which was a bonus. The chicken karaage was perfect. Definetly an appetizer to get. I also ordered the tako yaki. It was perfect aside from the bonito flakes being a bit too big. Finally, my "Epic Meal Time" roll and my calamari roll came. The epic meal time roll was basically a dynamite roll with the tempura being replaced by the bacon. It was topped with a sweet sauce. Similar to teriyaki. The bacon took a while to get the flavor out of but you can definetly notice it. It was really crispy too. The calamari roll had 4 long deep fried squid tentacles in it. Basically a dynamite roll with the tempura replaced with calamari. It was a great play on different textures. Works real well together. Overall, this place is definetly a place to go to if you're craving sushi in the guildford area.
One of the best nabeyaki udon I have had. Specialty sushi worth trying. Nice atmosphere, not a hole-in-the-wall. Prices reasonable. Parking tough at peak times. Service pretty good & food arrives quickly. Sushi not as big as Guildford Sushi, but overall this place is better for sit down meals, first dates, or when trying to impress.
Update (Sept 21, 2014): Prices have jumped up about 20% but portions & quality have not changed to justify the price hike in my opinion. Still a good eat but we will be coming back less often due to the significant price increase.
Great. Went with my family to eat there, heard lots about it, was my first time and i can say the food is pretty good, i love eating the california rolls, and the sashimi. pretty satisfied because i left the resturant with a full stomach almost for the whole day.
The sushi here is amazing!! Don't listen to constantino there. I actually went on the same day nov 18. They were having a 3 year anniversary and had lots of good specials. I think where this person is confused, is this is Japanese food the way it's supposed to be, not 6$ California rolls from Safeway. They use real ginger, that's when you know they are legit. The food was fresh, flavorful, and not to pricy depending what you were buying. This is for sure my new favorite sushi restaurant, I live in Coquitlam and I will drill all the way across the bridge just for it. Amazing
Everything But Price. I'm assuming that rent for such a large building in a busy area drives up the costs, and unfortunately the food does not make up for it. But the menu is diverse and the decor and service are more than pleasant. You can get some pretty tasty high-end seafood at Tengoku but it's going to cost you.
EXCELLENT food & service! The best sushi place in Surrey/Guildford area. I come here with my family & friends and order take-out almost too often lol. This restaurant has come a long way from when it first opened. I have to admit I wasn't a fan in the beginning, I gave it a chance again the last couple years & glad I did. Now I don't have to leave Surrey each time i'm craving good sushi.
MUST TRY: Sashimi pizza & their Chirashi dons (HUGE)!
Service is also friendly & attentive!
Best Sushi Place I've ever been to.. Normally my family likes to go to "all-you-can-eat" sushi places because we used to think that's where we got the most bang for our buck. After visiting Sushi Tengoku, we were proven TOTALLY wrong.
We LOVED our servers, who were super nice to us, and the guy taking our order let us know that 1 dinner order was going to be A LOT of food, and advised us against getting two (wasn't that nice of him?). He was totally right. Dish after dish, after dish came pouring on to our table, and this wasn't cheap dry, end-of-the-day type of sushi. It was beautifully hand crafted, with a lot of care taken into presentation and unique taste. The salad dressing was scrumptious, the sauces, the way it was prepared - everything tasted so good. I felt like I was at some kind of celebrity chef food tasting challenge!
We thought the bill would come to a lot, but in the end, our super full tummies cost less than if we had gone to an all-you-can-eat sushi place.
I totally would recommend this restaurant. Even the ambiance was classic and nice, and so modern, well decorated.
The only fault was that no one was there to greet us at the door, probably because they were so busy...or maybe they don't have a hostess? So it was awkward at first, someone handing us a menu as they walked out of the kitchen, then leaving, then another person helping us....but all in all, the staff is very conscious of their customers' needs and don't ignore you. Even if it wasn't our server, if we tagged someone down, they would jump to help us right away - they wouldn't just say "oh I'll get your server for you". I was very impressed by that.
Awesome, awesome place - we loved it!
Good rolls. Good, unique rolls! nice
Great food, nice employees... But horribly sloooooooow. Will come back though.
One of the better sushi restaurants in guildford. We have liked everything we have tried. Volcano roll is one of our favourites.
Good sushi with ambiance in Surrey. I came here on Mother's day after reading a couple of reviews. After reading a blog which certainly gives Sushi Tengoku more credit for their food and service, I decide to give it a try. I can say that I am really satisfied with this visit and I will certainly return!
I phoned in advance and I was informed that Sundays + mother's day will be busy so I made a reservation. We came in at 11:30 which is just when they open. That makes a difference in the service because food was delivered quickly and parking was easy too. I believe we were served by the owner, or at least the more experienced manager. When we were ordering, she introduced the specials and served us tea and miso soup right away. We asked for a pot of tea on our table because we sat at the very inner corner and usually they could miss serving the customers because it's a fairly big restaurant. I think the problem is the layout of the interior, not really the service (for the people who had unpleasant experience).
So we ordered Seafood dinner combo, terikyaki bento, sashimi bento and a tuna&salmon tempura roll. The value is great if you ordered the right things ;) Seafood has a lot of items and can certainly feed more than 2. Bento was my favorite, although the teriyaki and rice portion is too little. The tempura roll was not as good as I thought because the tempura was small and they didn't use any special sauce. I want to try their special rolls next time. As the seafood dinner comes with dessert, we were supposed to get 1 portion of dessert. But the owner was very kind and she served everyone ice cream (mango or green tea)!!
The owner(?) was very kind and she chat with me a bit. She was very open to suggestions and asked how the food was, and when I mentioned that I read the reviews before I came, she even wanted to get the address of the website (although it was a chinese food blog). When we were paying, they put chocolate mint instead of cheap mint candies. There was so much food for 5 people and it came to about $10 each.
In summary, I would recommend this restaurant because the service was really good and food has value. Although there wasn't really one thing that's amazing well done, it's good food for friend/family gatherings and for people who like japanese food. The menu has a very varied selection. You just have to do your homework before you come...like making a reservation and don't come here when it's the busiest! We noticed the parking lot was all full around 1pm. Anyway, Sushi Tengoku deserves more credit and it has my recommendation.
Whenever we're looking for a quick lunch, Japanese food is always at the top of our list given that there's practically a Japanese restaurant around every corner LOL. They're everywhere!! One of the best things about living in the GVR (to me) is that we have access to a seemly unlimited amount of options for sushi LOL. I've heard good things about Tegoku Sushi and how they're one of the better Japanese restaurants in Surrey! Tegoku is super popular during lunch time because it's right across from Guildford Town Centre! According to a few sources this place is Japanese run but I saw a few tables with what looked suspiciously like bibimbap and galbitang, so maybe the owners changed and its run by Koreans now (but I could be wrong!) The decor in here is really neat, the ceilings are really high and the inside looks like an old heritage house! My dad thought it was really cool and he kept taking pictures because it looks like our old house LOL! The main floor of the restaurant is sectioned off into booths for privacy, but they also have a sushi bar for single diners! When the menu arrived, we jumped on the lunch specials! All of their lunch specials are around $9-13, and they all come with sides! My dad was only interested in the bento boxes LOL. To him, bento boxes = value + variety. I like them too haha, but I prefer ordering a la carte, especially when it comes to nigiri! But my dad convinced to be get a bento to save money LOL! My dad was like "I'm going to order the more expensive one, you can get the cheap one LMAO..." Aightt, dad, whatever floats your boat! My dad ordered the House Bento Box ($13.50) which included: Sashimi Ebi Sunomo 3 pieces of nigiri Miso Soup A side salad Beef or Chicken Teriyaki Rice I got their sashimi bento ($11.50) which came with: sashimi chicken kaarage 4 pieces of a cali roll 3 pieces of nigiri miso soup a side salad! Salad 4/5 stars The salad was surprisingly good!! Both of our bento boxes came with a side salad! The ging
My new favorite roll. I love how Tengoku displays their dishes, everything looks so appetizing.
I saw that a new Japanese restaurant had opened up where Anducci's used to be on 152nd St in Surrey. I wanted to check it out, but the reviews on DineHere were low
